Card of Thanks In Loving Memory of
Elvia Perez 02-11-1968 † 05-04-2017
No reason for sorrow, no reason to cry. Look toward tomorrow and I’ll tell you why my memories of you and yours of me are illed with love and laughter forever. You’ll see no reason to worry, nor question God as to why you have lost me. No reason to say goodbye. It’s time for my journey home, a beautiful and peaceful trip that I must make alone. So just be strong and keep a smile, we’ll only be apart for a little while. The love I’ve known is a very special part, the love I’ve shown came straight from the heart. I leave you now to go on my way to a wonderful place where we’ll be together someday. No reason at all as you can see. I’m with the Lord. He’ll take care of me.
We wish to express our thanks and appreciation to all our relatives, friends, and neighbors for their prayers, food, flowers, and all other kindness shown during this difficult time.

Community Comes Together to Taste Healthy Grulla Middle School Honor Band Earned The Healthy Cooking School – Dinner Tonight sponsored by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service was a huge success with some 340 persons attending and supporting the event – reports Yolanda Morado, Starr County Extension Agent. The event included 6 different live cooking demonstrations by celebrity Chefs Jesse Pena and Corina Vidaurri. The success of the event was made possible by the strong community, schools, health care services and business support. Thirteen exhibitors brought healthy food dishes for tasting and Extension Staff and community partners, provided the sampling of the 6 dishes prepared for viewing. Health Agencies also provided valuable information and resources for those attending. In order to eat healthy it takes a total effort by every resident and family, to raise the awareness of a healthy lifestyle. Starr County schools through the SHAC (School Health Advisory Committees) are working diligently in providing benefits and opportunities to encourage their students and staff to be healthy. What we eat is very important! Food is the fuel that the body requires. Give it all of the nutrition requirements that it needs and it will respond in “great” performance no matter what age you are. Many claim that eating healthy isn’t easy and knowing what to eat that is healthy is challenging. Here are a few smart tips to follow that can get you started. Eat a variety of foods meats, eggs, vegetables, fruits (preferably fresh), whole grains and dairy products. Take note of portion sizes and they vary between age and male and females. Eating healthy also means leaving out foods that are high in added sugar, and sodium. That includes most fast foods, sugar drinks (sodas) processed foods/ snacks like chips and crackers. Remember you need to eat right

Rio Grande City High School Alumni Mr. Cesar Perez is Giving Back
Mr. Cesar Perez, a Rio Grande City High School Alumni and former RGC High School Baseball Player is generously giving senior players: #1 Javier Gonzalez, #2 Oscar Garcia, #4 Juan Carlos Perez, #5 Jose Ivan Gazca, #11 Javier Luis Garcia, #13 Aaron Garcia and #24 Hugo Alaniz a $500 scholarship each. #21 Ruben Fernando “Nando” Sepulveda will be receiving a $1000 scholarship for excelling in baseball and to support his commitment to play baseball at Coastal Bend College. Mr. Cesar Perez is a 1975 graduate of Rio Grande City High School. Cesar was a fouryear starter on varsity for the Rattlers and received first and second team all-district honors. One of the Valley’s great fireballing pitchers, he once struck out 16 batters against EdcouchElsa and four days later threw a no-hitter and 18 strike outs against Falfurrias. He also set a record with 19 strikeouts against Zapata. Cesar went on to pitch for Texas Southmost College and led the Scorpions on their historic run to the National Junior College World Series in 1977. In 1979, Cesar pitched for the Sam Houston State Bearkats in the NAIA World Series. Even though he was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies and Cincinnati Reds in back-to-back years, Cesar opted to focus on his education, gaining his bachelor’s
degree in economics, a master’s degree in finance and later his law degree from UT Law School. Cesar is the son of the late Gustavo Perez and Yolanda Perez. He lives in Palmhurst with his wife, Ofelia Pena Perez, and they have two children, Rebekah and Ricardo. His nephew, Jason, is currently playing with the Rattlers. In 2015 he was inducted into the valley’s Leo Najo Baseball Hall of Fame and is one of very few players from Rio Grande City and the valley to receive this prestigious honor. The Rio Grande City School Board of Trustees, administration and staff would like to thank Mr. Cesar Perez for being a true embodiment of the Rattler spirit with his generosity, hard work and dedication.

Medicare can help you manage your chronic illnesses By Bob Moos/Southwest public affairs officer for the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Caring for yourself when you have a chronic illness like diabetes or heart disease is hard work. When you have more than one such illness, it can sometimes seem overwhelming. Sixty-six percent of Texans with Medicare have at least two chronic conditions. They often must juggle visits to several doctors, as well as the separate trips for follow-up tests. Then they must make sure they’re taking the right medications at the right times. Managing a number of chronic illnesses all at once can quickly become a full-time job. Unless it’s done right, you can compromise your quality of life and possibly increase your risk of a long-term disability or an earlier-thanexpected death. That’s why Medicare is encouraging your health care providers to work together more closely to coordinate the treatment of your chronic conditions, so that you can spend less time sitting in medical offices and more time doing whatever you enjoy. To keep you healthy, Medicare has expanded a benefit called chronic care management. It provides higher payments to doctors and other providers to help you live with chronic disease. Through this benefit, your health care practitioner will assist you in keeping track of your medical history, your medications and all of the other health care providers you see. You’ll receive a comprehensive care plan that outlines your treatments and goals. You’ll also have 24-hour-aday, 7-day-a-week access to health care professionals for urgent needs from the comfort of your home. Does that sound like something that might interest you? To qualify for chronic care management services, you must be enrolled in Medicare’s traditional fee-for-service program, or you
must be in the Medicaid program and receiving Medicare benefits. You also must have at least two chronic illnesses that pose a serious threat. The list of eligible diseases includes asthma, chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, depression, hepatitis, heart failure, high blood pressure, HIV/AIDS, osteoporosis, schizophrenia and stroke, among others. If you think you might benefit, ask your doctor to explain the various services you’d receive, such as: -- At least 20 minutes a month of chronic care management services; -- Personalized assistance from a dedicated health care professional who will work with you to create your care plan; -- Coordination of care between your pharmacy, specialists, testing centers, hospitals and more;

-- Phone check-ins between visits to keep you on track; -- 24/7 emergency access to a health care professional; -- Expert assistance with setting and meeting your health goals. Your out-of-pocket cost for chronic care management will be the same as your share for other Medicare Part B services, so you may have a deductible or copayment. But if you have Medigap or retiree supplemental health insurance, you may not have to pay those out-of-pocket expenses. Also, chronic care management can help you avoid the need for more costly services. By acting now and managing your health, you may be able to head off hospitalization and more serious treatment in the future. Chronic care management means having a continuous relationship with a dedicated health care professional who knows you and

de Quemar para el Condado de Starr ‘Click It Or Ticket’ Campaign Saves More Than 5,000 Lives Prohibición El Sr. Ramiro Sarabia - para evitar incendios se les libre de escombros y que no hay 1 in 10 Texans still not buckling up, resulting in 9 percent increase in unbelted deaths in 2016
This month marks the 15th anniversary of the “Click It or Ticket” campaign urging Texans to buckle up. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that since its inception 15 years ago, our life-saving campaign has resulted in 5,068 fewer traffic fatalities. However, from 2015 to 2016, deaths among people not wearing seat belts increased 9 percent. “Wearing a seat belt is the single most important step you can take to protect yourself in a crash, and in Texas it’s the law,” said Texas Department of Transportation Executive Director James Bass. “People make a lot of excuses for not buckling up, but those excuses will not save your life or prevent you from getting a ticket. The fact is, it only takes a few seconds to buckle up and it could mean the difference between life and death.” According to NHTSA, since its inception 15 years ago, the Texas
“Click It or Ticket” campaign has not only saved thousands of lives but also prevented more than 86,000 serious injuries and saved Texas more than $19.3 billion in related economic costs. When the “Click It or Ticket” campaign launched in 2002, only 76 percent of Texans used their seat belts. Today, nearly 92 percent buckle up, but 8 percent still don’t and the number of people who don’t buckle up doubles to 16 percent at night. In 2016, 994 people died because they weren’t wearing seat belts – an increase of 9 percent over the 908 unbelted fatalities recorded in 2015. Wearing a seat belt helps keep occupants from being ejected in a crash and increases the chances of surviving by 45 percent in a car, and up to 60 percent in a truck. In Texas, the law requires everyone in a vehicle to buckle up or face fines and court costs up to $200. Children younger than 8 years must be in a child safety
seat or booster seat unless they’re taller than 4 feet 9 inches. If they aren’t properly restrained, the driver faces fines up to $250 plus court costs. Along with TxDOT’s annual “Click It or Ticket” campaign, police departments in Texas and across the nation will step up their enforcement efforts from May 22 to June 4. To learn more about “Click It or Ticket,” visit texasclickitorticket. com. The information contained in this report represents reportable data collected from the Texas Peace Officer’s Crash Report (CR -3). I continue to be amazed at the diversity of wildlife here in the LRGV. A few months ago some birdwatchers stayed in the Rancho Lomitas RV park a few days. While we chatted one evening, the subject of elf owls came up. They had birdcall recordings with them. They played them for us to hear and, to the surprise of everyone, an elf owl answered. We traced the owl’s reply and found him in amesquite next to a power pole having several woodpecker holes. Elf owls are tiny, just 5” to 6” long, about the size of a soda can, and with a
wingspan of about 10.” They weigh only about 1 and 1/2 once. No other owl in the world is smaller. They’re grayish-brown in color and have no “horns.” There’s a small whitish eyebrow and some speckling of white on the breast and wings.
Elf owls are found here, in southern states west of us and in Mexico. They’re desert, chaparral and thorn-scrub dwellers. They get much of the water they need from the prey they eat but a pond or creek nearby is desirable.
They hunt at dusk and during the night. Their diet consists of grasshoppers, crickets, cicadas, spiders, and scorpions whose stinger is carefully removed before eating. Other small vertebrates, small lizards and birds may be taken. Foraging is done by waiting on a branch and flying out to catch passing prey on the wing and by hopping about in the brush to scare-up some insects. They don’t build their own nests but rely on woodpeckers to build nests in saguaros and power poles, as here at the ranch. She incubates the eggs, usually 3, while he feeds her and, after 2 to 3 weeks, also the hatchlings. When the young are old enough she joins in the feeding. They typically live 3 to 5 years, longer in captivity. Migration into Mexico for the winter months may occur if the cold is prolonged. Elf owls are another of the most unusual, distinctive life forms that inhabit the Valley. I hope you have the rare pleasure of seeing one and that you appreciate what wildlife treats the Valley offers.
