Producers can apply for assistance beginning on May 26, 2020. Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) announced $16 billion in direct payments to deliver relief to America’s farmers and ranchers impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Specifically, the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP) will provide
financial assistance to farmers and ranchers who have suffered a fivepercent-or-greater price decline due to COVID-19 and face additional significant marketing costs as a result of lower demand, surplus production, and other disruptions. “The COVID-19 pandemic has damaged our food systems and caused major financial losses for our farmers and ranchers,” said Congressman Cuellar. “These payments will support the agricultural industry while market demand returns and our nation recovers.” As a senior member of the Agricultural Subcommittee on Appropriations, Congressman Cuellar helped secure $16 billion for the CFAP within the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Stability (CARES) and the Commodity Credit Corporation Charter Act. The first source of funding is $9.5 billion in appropriated funding provided in the CARES Act to compensate farmers for losses due to price declines that occurred between mid-January 2020, and mid-April 2020 and provides support for specialty crops for product that had been shipped from the farm between the same time period but subsequently spoiled due to loss of marketing channels. The second funding source uses the Commodity Credit Corporation Charter Act to compensate producers for $6.5 billion in losses due to on-going market disruptions.

The owners of the ranch have $7.50 fee per day for bird watching but those who have come go away very satisfied. I, of course, can’t expect regular occurrences like I’ve described but you never know. However, as you may

On May 22, 2020, Governor Greg Abbott issued an Executive Order suspending in-person visitations in all county and municipal jails in the state of Texas. This restriction does not apply to visitation by an attorney meeting with a client or a religious leader or member of the clergy. The Governor previously directed state prisons, jails, and juvenile justice facilities to restrict visitation upon
issuing his COVID-19 disaster declaration. This executive order adds another layer of defense to contain COVID-19 hot spots, prevent community spread, and protect staff and inmates. “Jails have shown to be highly susceptible to COVID-19 surges which is why we are focused on containing any potential hot spots and preventing spread both within jails and the community,” said
Governor Abbott. “I encourage jails to utilize virtual visitation strategies to allow for visitations in a way that protects both staff and the inmate population. The State of Texas is committed to keeping all Texans safe, protecting our most vulnerable populations, and mitigating the spread of COVID-19 throughout the Lone Star State.”

The U.S. Census Bureau, in coordination with federal, state and local health officials, will begin to drop off 2020 Census questionnaire packets at front doors of households in the four counties of the Rio Grande Valley beginning Tuesday, May 26, 2020. This is done in areas where the majority of households do not receive mail at their physical address. The Census Bureau began hand-delivering census materials on March 15 but suspended all fieldwork for this operation on March 18 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Temporary field staff have been trained to observe all social distancing protocols and will wear official government-provided personal protective equipment for their safety and the safety
of the public. This operation is contact less and follows the most current federal health and safety guidelines. The health and safety of Census Bureau staff and the public is always a top priority. The Census Bureau will deliver 2020 Census invitations and paper questionnaires at the front doors of roughly 5.1 million stateside households including Cameron County, Willacy County, Hidalgo County and Starr County. This operation is crucial to ensure a complete and accurate count of all communities, which helps guide hundreds of billions of dollars in public and private sector spending per year. People are strongly encouraged to respond promptly to the 2020 Census using the ID number
included in the questionnaire packet. Responding with a census ID or the paper questionnaire helps ensure the best count of their community. People can respond online, by phone or by using the paper form in the packet.

Medina Electric Cooperative is accepting applications from area volunteer fire departments for a retired fleet truck. The truck available is a 2010 Ford F-150, 4WD, 1/2-TON, service truck with approximately 170,000 miles. VFDs that serve one of the 17 counties where the cooperative provides power are encouraged to apply. When cooperative vehicles are retired, they are typically sent to auction. The board of directors saw an opportunity to give retired vehicles to VFDs. Medina EC’s CEO Mark Rollans says “Cooperative Principle #7 is Concern for Community. We support our local volunteer fire departments because we know the service they provide our communities is indispensable.” Medina EC has given away nine vehicles since the program started in 2015. Past recipients include Devine, Sabinal, Big Foot, Charlotte, Atascosa-Bexar County Line, Christine, El Cenizo, Nueces Canyon, and Reagan Wells volunteer fire departments. If you’re interested in learning more about this program or submitting an application, visit MedinaEC.org/VehDonation. The deadline to apply is July 1.

Addressing the Childhood Obesity Epidemic Obesity is a health epidemic that does not discriminate based on age, gender or ethnicity. While obesity poses a serious health risk for everyone, children who are obese may be setting themselves up for a lifetime of medical problems. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says childhood obesity is a serious problem in the United States. According to the CDC National Center for Health Statistics, 18.5 percent of children and adolescents are considered obese, which equates to around 13.7 million youth. In Canada, obesity rates among youth have nearly tripled in the last 30 years, as noted by the Government of Canada. Children who are overweight or obese are at a higher risk of developing a range of health problems, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and bone and joint problems. Females may miss or experience abnormal menstrual cycles. Childhood obesity is not just an issue in North America, as it has even reached epidemic levels in developing countries.
Childhood obesity has become the most chronic disease of childhood, states the Obesity Action Coalition. Although the causes of obesity are widespread, certain risk factors are major contributors. Some causes can include: heredity; lack of physical activity; dietary patterns, such as poor portion control; socioeconomic status; and eating more meals out than at home. The CDC defines obesity as a body mass index, or BMI, at or above the 95th percentile of the CDC’s sex-specific BMI-for-age growth charts. Treating obesity begins with changing behaviors. The following lifestyle changes may be effective. · Place a greater emphasis on daily physical activity. Eschewing devices for physical activity can help children get off the couch and lose weight. · Change dietary habits. Entire families may need to change some of their dietary habits, such as poor food choices and lack of portion control, to help obese youngsters lose weight. Focus on consuming fewer calories each

Armistice Day at South Britton Avenue circa 1920’s
You’re in good hands.
Rio Grande City residents and Fort Ringgold military personnel celebrate Armistice Day at South Britton Avenue circa 1920’s. Gathered around, onlookers watch as the flag is hoisted up the flag pole as festivities begin in celebration of that important day. Armistice Day represents the anniversary of the end of World War I in 1918. In 1954 Armistice Day took on a different name and became Veterans Day which today is celebrated every year on the 11th of November as a holiday commemorating the end of the First World War and honoring all veterans of the armed forces.
