Card of Thanks In Loving Memory of

Amelia R. Moreno I’m free

Don’t grieve for me for now I’m free, I took his hand when I heard Him call. If my parting has left a void, then ill it with remembered joy. My life’s been full, I savored much: good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch, friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, don’t lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your hearts and share with me... God wanted me now, He set me free.

October 30, 1970 † April 13, 2018

We wish to express our deepest appreciation to all of our relatives and friends for their presence, food, flowers, cards, gifts, and condolences during our time of grief for the loss of our beloved one. May God bless you and we will always remember your presence and comforting words.

General Ricardo Sanchez Elementary Roma High Students Take Stand Against Underage Drinking High School students Students Received Free Books gaveFourupRoma a morning of their Spring

First grade students from General Ricardo Sanchez Elementary were happy and excited for receiving a free book that Ms. Karen Furlong donated. I would like to mention that Mrs. Karen Furlong has donated many books to the district for years and we are very happy to be part of that literacy team. On behalf of GRSE administration and librarian Mrs. Nancy C. Garcia we would like to thank you for bringing literacy and happiness to our students.

Francisco Garcia Appears on Tengo Talento Mucho Talento

Break for a great cause – helping to prevent underage drinking. Roma ISD is part of the Starr County Community Coalition and took part in the group’s Spring Break Sticker Campaign, which asked willing students to place warning stickers on beer and alcohol cases at local businesses (Photo and information courtesy Lory Trevino.) to deter underage drinking. Kudos to Sebastian Cortez, Lorissa Guzman, Leanza Trevino and Alessandro Garcia for approaching local businesses and taking on this great work! Also a big thanks to O’Maria’s, Riverview Center, Saenz Minimart, P.R.S. Groceries, El Venado Drive Thru, Nava’s, and Border Town Market for agreeing to help the students in their mission. Together, we can put a stop to underage drinking in our community.

A Circle of Service

In 1950, Dr. M.J. Rodriguez opened Rio Grande City’s first ‘hospital’ at the corner of Washington and Fourth Streets. People went there to have babies, have surgeries and to get patched up from accidents at work and on the road. Mrs. Ruth Marks, an active member of Rio FIRST United Methodist Church, was just a teenager when she started working for Dr. Rodriguez. She shares many fond memories of her time working there as receptionist, doing “a little bit of everything.” After Dr. Rodriguez passed away in the late 1960’s, his wife, Rebecca Rodriguez, an active member of Rio FIRST, sold the building to the Rio FIRST UMC and housed one of the finest kindergartens in Starr County. Rio FIRST dedicated the facility as the “Education Building.”

Once public funding came available for kindergartens, the Methodist Kindergarten became the Methodist Pre-School. Again, public funding came available for pre-schools, so the Methodist Pre-School became the Methodist Day-Care. Many, many adults in our community remember their wonderful, happy days in the care of leaders through the years: Mrs. Emma Falcon, Mrs. Adela Gutierrez, Mrs. Dora Wagner, Mrs. Olga Dobbs and Mrs. Becky Falcon. In the summer of 2016, the administrative council of Rio FIRST made the very painful decision to close the Methodist Day-Care—at the time of the closing, there were over 40 day-cares in operation in Starr County—the Methodist DayCare was no longer serving a real

need in the community. So, Rio FIRST now had an empty building—what to do? What should we do with this large, historic building? Well, as is often the case, God had the answer. In that same summer of 2016, someone from Methodist Healthcare Ministries (based in San Antonio, Texas; www.mhm.org) approach Pastor Jon Herrin about the possibility of placing a “Wesley Nurse” in this parish. The pastor and the admin. council agreed to see where this journey would go. Less than three months later, another call came from MHM wondering if we would like to receive a “Community Counselor” in our parish. Things were becoming clear—the old “education building” was going to see new life!

STC - Campus Suicide Prevention Training

The STC Counseling Department along with UTRGV hosted a Campus Suicide Prevention Training for the Starr County Campus Psychology Club. This is the first training they do for STC students. The overall goal of the Campus Suicide Prevention Training is to raise awareness of suicide as a critical but preventable issue among individuals. The training addressed the numerous risk factors faced by various groups including the general population, students, veterans, law enforcement, GLBTQI, students, children and adolescents, faculty and staff, as

well as health providers. Most importantly, the training provided guidelines on recognizing signs and symptoms of distress that can lead to suicide and how to address them with the individuals at risk. Topics included: Signs and symptoms indicative of possible suicidal behavior, Identification of individuals at risk and what to do, De-stigmatization and promotion of timely mental health treatment when needed, and Identification of local and online resources available for prevention. All Starr Psych Club members and advisors Eli and Alex Sarabia, received a certificate of completion for attending this

training. Starr Psych Club member Yvette Garza stated, “I learned that suicide is the number one preventable death; knowing how to look and listen for signs of suicide is key to saving someone’s life,” whereas member Tano Del Bosque stated, “This event was very important for me, not only for my career as a psychologist but also I have several people in my life who have been suicidal; now I know how to pursue them in a direct and indirect manner; also that there are too many myths about suicide, such as that talking about suicide makes them want to commit suicide but it’s not.”

Roma ISD Offices Take Pies In the Face

Texas long-nosed snakes are harmless

Roma ISD’s Police Department continues to show their community spirit and dedication to community children with activities like Pie an Officer in the Face at the R.&C. Saenz Spartan Spring Carnival. Way to go!

When I first saw it along the path leading to my screenhouse, I thought it might be an unusually patterned coral snake. Coral snakes have an exceptionally lethal poison. A careful look at the snake and a bit of research revealed, however, that the snake was a Texas long-nosed snake which is nonvenomous and harmless, though it does resemble a coral snake. Typically they grow to about 30” which is considerably larger than the coral. Found in the western t w o thirds of Te x a s , the SW corner of the U. S. and northern Mexico, it has bands of color which alternate black and red with a very narrow band of cream between them. I say bands but more accurately should indicate saddles. While a band

encircles a snake, a saddle is distinct only along the dorsal side, that is the top; it fades along the sides. The color saddles on the long-nosed not only fade but taper roughly to points on the sides. It’s called a long-nosed snake, for a good reason, because it indeed has a long nose which is upturned. An interesting characteristic you’re not likely to observe is that on the ventral side, that is the bottom, the scales behind the anus, toward the tip of the tail, are single and not in pairs. Long-nosed snakes are the only nonvenomous snakes in the U. S. to have that feature. For those of you who want to learn technical terminology, they’re called undivided subcaudal scales. And as an aside, because snakes have only one orifice, not two, to excrete matter, the anus is technically called a cloaca.

Long-nosed snakes are mostly nocturnal and shy so few people see them. They’re also burrowing snakes. When threatened, they may shake their tail and, if loose soil is near-by, they’ll burrow into the soil leaving only the head protruding to check on any danger. If grabbed, they’re not likely to bite but may produce foul smelling excrement and, surprisingly, some blood! They like dry, rocky grasslands and eat lizards, amphibians, small snakes and rodents. They lay 5 to 9 eggs in early summer which hatch in late summer or early fall. All things considered, Texas long-nosed snakes are another very interesting and beneficial part of the wildlife diversity of the Valley. Please help preserve that diversity.
