Elder Abuse Prevention Month Roma ISD Special Olympians Bring observed in Starr County Home Awards from Soccer Tournament
Starr County Judge Eloy Vera and Starr County Commissioners designated the month of May as Elder Abuse Prevention Month. The proclamation reads “Whereas people who are elderly or have disabilities have contributed to the general welfare of this County by helping to preserve customs, convictions, and traditions of many people from diverse backgrounds” These residents are vital and integral members of our society and their wisdom and experience have enriched our lives; Elder abuse is grossly underreported because the elderly who are being
abused find it very difficult to tell anyone and are usually ashamed and sometimes afraid”. Protection of senior citizens and disabled citizens is of the utmost importance to Judge Vera, Starr County Commissioners and the Adult Protective Services Personnel who work diligently to ensure that all adults are treated with respect. Judge Vera and the Commissioners urge all citizens to work together to help reduce abuse and neglect of people who are elderly or have disabilities. If anyone wishes to report suspicious
behavior please call the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services at (800) 2525400.
Amen. (S.G.)

Villarreal. Sonia spoke to the students about their future careers and choices. She thanked all her former teachers and her former principal, Mr. Mike Villarreal for guiding her while she was student council president in 2000. Sonia motivated the students and inspired them to continue all their future goals. The students were elated with her accomplishments. The GHS banquet was held on May 25, 2018 @ the GHS Library. Welcoming the students was GHS principal, Mr. Julio Equia and the CTE assistant principal, Mr. David Zarate. The distinguished guest speaker for the venue was the hometown favorite, Miss Rose Benavidez – South Texas College School Board Trustee. She shared her vision and her dream with the students. She is a woman of great deeds and great accomplishments that is an advocate for Grulla. Students, educators and parents were mesmerized as she joined school board member, Mr. Eleazar Velasquez in giving out the CTE medals and certificates to the students with their principal, Mr. Julio Equia. At each banquet the students were celebrated for their accomplishments and then proceeded to take an individual and group picture with their administrators and guest speakers and the CTE teacher that nominated them for the honor. After students were honored they were treated to a delicious meal and dance. The CTE administration & staff is committed to excellence in everything they do. They continually strive to teach optimum performance. They believe that innovation is the convergence of creative leadership, cutting–edge curriculum and effective instructional delivery for an ever-changing global economy. TheCTE program would like to thank everyone for their support and the RGCCISD School Board for giving the program the opportunity to adapt and upgrade individual skills in a rapidly changing world.

Women’s Conference 2018 Health needs and services for our families have come to the forefront because of federal health reform. When it comes to women they are always so busy taking care of their families that they often neglect themselves comments Yolanda Morado, County Extension Agent Family Community Health. Aside from the tasty serving of healthy foods the conference included three health related presentations. Dr. Jenna Anding PhD, RD, LD Professor and Extension Specialist spoke on “Popular to always rely on research based plan. Diets for Weight Loss and diets and to always see a doctor The second presenter was Health”. Her strong message was before taking on any weight loss Dr. Patsy Laurel Garza whose
addressed the topic “Making Healthy Food Choices/ Food that Heals”. Her message was that our food choices each day affect our health and how you feel today, tomorrow, and in the future. She explained to the group that a healthy diet can help one reach and maintain a healthy weight, reduce the risk of chronic diseases (like diabetes, heart disease and cancer), and promote overall health. Dr. Jeselle Mathews Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist spoke on “Preventive Health Care for Women at all Ages” She stressed the importance of women to get routine screenings. These preventive steps, should be taken before there are signs of symptoms of disease or before it is too late. Special thanks goes to the Health Community sponsors: F.J. Scott Study Club and Rio Grande City Women’s Club, South Texas College, and Frank Puente and BTA Kids.

Roma High Student Honored for Varied buntings are attractive and scarce Presentation by Roma ISD School Board We’re at the northern edge of their range which extends up into the Valley only in the summer and partly accounts for their scarcity here. They’re also seen in the summer near the southern borders of New Mexico and Arizona. In the fifteen or more years I’ve been in southern Texas, I’ve seen a varied bunting only three times, once while driving home from Rio Grande City and twice at my birdbath. Three times compared with hundreds of times for our resident birds. I remember the three sightings because varied buntings are
both attractive and distinctive. About the size of a sparrow, 5 inches long with a wingspan of 8 inches, they’re quite colorful in a restrained way. The back of the head is red and the upper breast
rosy. A partial eye-ring is also red. The head, rump and tail are blue creating a bright contrast. The face, close to the bill, is black like that of a cardinal’s, to which the varied buntings are related. The remainder of the body and
wings are a dark gray. The tail is a bit short and the bill conical and stubby. What I’ve just described is the male. The female is a nondescript tannish-brown with
