Valley Athletic Trainers Association Inducts Mr. James Meguire into V.A.T.A. Hall of Fame

The room is filled with friendly conversation and the scent of painrelieving ointment permeates the air. Students sit patiently while Doc Meguire makes the rounds with a smile and an infectiously positive attitude. It’s not hard to see why students are comfortable coming to him with their concerns. It is easy to see why everyone lovingly calls him “Doc.” An Ingleside, Texas native, Mr. Meguire has become a part of the Valley since the summer of 1990. Having graduated from high school in 1984 and after receiving his Bachelors of Science in Chemistry from Texas A& I Kingsville, Mr. Meguire was originally seeking a job in chemistry. However, in the summer of 1990, it was his extensive student training experience with the Texas A&I Javalinas that earned him a spot with the Rio Grande City school district. His experience during his high school and college career A Memorial Day Ceremony to honor the soldiers who paid the ultimate price for our freedom was held at the Starr made him a perfect fit for our young athletes. His work since has earned County Cemetery on May 29, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. The ceremony was sponsored by the Rio Grande City VFW “Henry him a spot in the history books. MEGUIRE, page 4 Clay Davis” Post #852 and officiated by Commander Mark Olivarez.“On behalf of our glorious republic for whose integrity our comrades enlisted and served, I place this emblem of the nation. The flag of our country was theirs to defend. Its glorious colors s hall waver over them in death as in life – for everyone to behold” said Commander Olivarez as he placed a flag in the honorary wreath. The VFW Honor guard followed with the 3 volley salute while the sound of Taps was in the background.

A clip of the movie can be seen at https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=53Qn0CJ4ws8&fea ture=youtu.be. Last year Garza made her debut on the big screen at the internationally acclaimed CANNES Film Festival in France. When Garza was just 5 years old she starred in the short independent film, “VOLVER” in which she played “Isa”. The short film depicts how Isa starts a struggle between life and death while in a comma state. During her deep sleep, Isa visits heaven. Somewhat troubled and sad for the unknown place, her fears diminish when she encounters her grandmother. Roma ISD wishes Garza the best of luck in her continued film career!

USDA Farm Service Agency County Committee Nomination Period Begins June 15 The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that the nomination period for local Farm Service Agency (FSA) county committees begins on Thursday, June 15, 2017. “County committees allow farmers and ranchers to make important decisions about how federal farm programs are administered locally to best serve their needs,” said Acting FSA Administrator Chris Beyerhelm. “We strongly encourage all eligible producers to visit their local FSA office today to find out how to get involved in their county’s election. There’s an increasing need for representation from underserved producers, which includes beginning, women and other minority farmers and ranchers.” County committees are made up of farmers and ranchers elected by other producers in their communities to guide the delivery of farm programs at the local level. Committee members play a critical role in the dayto-day operations of FSA. Committees consist of three to 11 members and meet once a month or as needed to make important decisions on disaster and conservation programs, emergency programs, commodity price support loan programs, county office employment and other agricultural issues. Members serve three-year terms. Nationwide, there are over 7,700 farmer and ranchers serving on FSA county committees. Farmers and ranchers may nominate themselves or others. Organizations, including those representing beginning, women and minority producers, may also nominate candidates to better serve their communities. To be eligible to serve on an FSA FSA, page 4

Crossing Over

Oh, please don’t feel guilty it was just my time to go. I see you are still feeling sad, and the tears just seem to low. We all come to earth for our lifetime, and for some it’s not many years. I don’t want you to keep crying, you are shedding so many tears. I haven’t really left you even though it may seem so, I have just gone to my heavenly home, and I’m closer to you than you know. Just believe that when you say my name, I’m standing next to you, I know you long to see me, but there’s nothing I can do. But I’ll still send you messages and hope you understand, that when your time comes to “cross over,” I’ll be there to take your hand.

We wish to express our sincere appreciation to our many relatives and friends for their presence, flowers, cards, masses, food, and comforting words during our deepest grief for the loss of our beloved one.

First West Nile Case Highlights Precautions for Mosquito-borne Diseases Everyone Can Help Prevent West Nile and Zika Texas’ first West Nile illness of the year has been reported to the Department of State Health Services, an adult woman from Montgomery County who developed the neurologic form of the disease in late April. As mosquito counts climb, the state of Texas is appealing to the public to help with the effort to stop mosquito-borne diseases by preventing mosquito bites and eliminating areas where mosquitoes can reproduce. “Diseases like Zika and West Nile remain threats in Texas, and we need everyone to do their part to protect themselves, their families and their communities,”

said DSHS Commissioner Dr. John Hellerstedt. “These are simple steps, and if people take them consistently, they will go a long way toward reducing the number of cases of either disease transmitted in Texas.” To help stop the spread of Zika and West Nile, people should •Use EPA-approved insect repellent every time they go outside. •Cover exposed skin with long pants and long-sleeved shirts whenever possible. •Use air conditioning or window and door screens that are in good repair to keep mosquitoes out. •Limit outdoor activities during peak mosquito times.

•Remove standing water in and around homes, including in trash cans, toys, tires, flower pots and any other containers so mosquitoes can’t lay their eggs. •Use a larvicide in water that can’t be drained to keep mosquitoes from developing. In 2016, Texas reported 370 human cases of West Nile illness, including 18 deaths. Most people who get infected don’t get sick, but about 20 percent will experience symptoms like headache, fever, muscle and joint aches, nausea and fatigue. In about one percent of infections, the virus can affect the nervous system, causing neurological symptoms such as disorientation, tremors, convulsions, paralysis, coma and even death. On the other hand, the illness Zika causes is usually mild, but the virus can have a profound effect on unborn babies whose mothers are infected during pregnancy. In some cases it can cause severe birth defects like microcephaly, a defect leading

to a small head because the brain doesn’t grow sufficiently during pregnancy. Texas has had 334 cases of Zika virus disease since the virus became a concern in the Western Hemisphere in 2015. The vast majority have been contracted abroad, though six cases were transmitted by mosquitoes in Brownsville late last year, and others spread through sexual contact or from mother to child. DSHS recommends pregnant women avoid traveling to locations with sustained, local Zika transmission, including all areas of Mexico. Because Zika can also spread through sexual contact, pregnant women and their sexual partners who have traveled to those areas should use condoms or avoid sexual contact during the course of the pregnancy. With transmission occurring in Mexico, the border region remains the most likely area in Texas for Zika to spread, though much of the state is at risk due to

the distribution of the mosquitoes that transmit the virus. DSHS continues to be on guard for Zika by recommending expanded testing that aims to identify cases transmitted within Texas so state and local governments can respond quickly to stop the spread. The state public health lab in Austin continues providing testing to find the virus in people and is now testing all mosquitoes capable of transmitting Zika that are submitted as part of routine mosquito surveillance. DSHS also has recently issued mosquito control guidance for local governments on how best to use the tools at their disposal to fight Zika by reducing mosquito populations. DSHS is currently working to train at least 500 community health workers along the border to educate the public and pregnant women about Zika and help them get the appropriate testing. DSHS is also planning to support teams of community health workers and case managers inside local health departments who will work directly with pregnant women who may have been exposed to Zika to help them access specialized prenatal care and help affected newborns get the care they need. Starting May 1, Texas began providing this year’s statewide

Medicaid benefit for mosquito repellent to prevent Zika virus transmission. The Texas Health and Human Services Commission is offering the repellent to more Medicaid clients to ensure additional Texans are protected from the virus. A Letter to the Editor Alcohol Access Central for Teens: End of School Year Events Prom, graduation, and end of school year parties can be memorable events for teenagers. However, it can also be a time when teenagers are tempted to consume alcohol. While parents will want their kids to celebrate the special occasion, there are some things parents could do to prevent adolescents from accessing alcohol. According to the 2016 Texas School Survey (TSS), 1 out of every 3 high school seniors in South Texas has used alcohol at least once in their lifetime. When asked how difficult it would be to get alcohol, the survey revealed that 1 out of every 2 high school seniors thought it would be somewhat or very easy to obtain alcohol if they wanted some. Recent focus groups held with youth across South Texas discovered that the most common sources obtain alcohol are family, friends, and parties. These are the same sources that teenagers may look to at the end of the school year for easy access.

In most occasions, alcohol is not seen as a dangerous drug given that it is a legal substance and it has become widely popularized through media and social norms. However, there are consequences to underage drinking such as injury, sexual assault, legal ramifications, and even death (including car crashes). Furthermore, research studies indicate that alcohol use during the teenage years could interfere with normal brain development and increase the risk of developing an alcohol use disorder (AUS). National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism states that an estimate of 855,000 adolescents had an AUD in 2012 and will keep increasing. As a parent, it is important to set clear expectations and consequences for your children. Let your teen know what your expectations are during this time. Research has shown that parents are the number one influence on an adolescent’s decision to use alcohol or other drugs. If alcohol

is available at your house, make sure to safeguard any alcoholic beverage and keep it out of their reach. As we approach the end of the month, (1) become engaged in your teen’s events, (2) know your teen’s whereabouts on the date of the event, and (3) do not provide alcohol or other substances. The Prevention Resource Center (PRC), a program of Behavioral Health Solutions of South Texas, serves as the central data collection repository for region 11 and the developer of a yearly Regional Needs Assessment (RNA), which is available to community members at no cost. To find out more about the prevention work being conducted in your community download the latest Regional Needs Assessment at our website, www.prc11.org/data. If you are interested in becoming a part of this project, please contact Irwin Mendoza, Regional Evaluator, at 787-7111 ext. 295, or Martha A. Gutierrez, Prevention Specialist, at 787-7111 ext. 297.

“Escuadron 201” Exhibition of Photography Ac2E Elementary Students Duke TIP Book Club

The City of Roma had an exhibition of photography on “Escuadron 201”, on May 18. They had Guillermo Ordorica R. from Consul Mexico in McAllen, Texas to narrate the exhibit. Roma High School students were brought in by their teachers Mr. and Mrs. Orlan Paulson to learn about The 201st Fighter Squadron (Spanish: Escuadrón Aéreo de Pelea 201). The 201st Fighter Squadron was a Mexican fighter squadron, part of the Mexican Expeditionary Air Force that aided the Allied war effort during World War II. The squadron was known by the nickname Águilas Aztecas or “Aztec Eagles”, apparently coined by members of the squadron during training. Exhibition will be at the Roma Birding Center until May 31st.

Ac2E Elementary students are closing off the school year with one last read for their Duke TIP Book Club. Fourth and fifth grade student book club members, along with their sponsors, are reading the Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster and Jules Feiffer. Ac2E Book Club sponsors would like to thank all book club member’s parents for their support throughout the entire school year.

COMMENTS & NEWS: The market was steady on the lighter weights to about 8 cents lower on the steers. Also, on heifers it was steady to about 3 cents lower on the average. The market reaction was statewide as reported by Texas Dept. of Agriculture Daily Market News. Early Monday, May 22nd, most of our ranches got some much needed rain. Pasture conditions should improve and our cattle should show improvement as well. See you this coming Friday at our sale. Your business is greatly appreciated.

Harvester ants have complex lives You might think a colony of harvester ants lead simple lives but you’d be wrong. Their social and sexual interactions are amazingly complicated. Let’s first consider their living quarters. Their nest tunnels may be six to nine feet deep, be in multiples and lined with side chambers. I’ve included a photo that was created by pouring molten aluminum down a nest opening and then washing away the soil. In the field the single large entrance is easy to recognize; it’s in the center of a bare patch of ground, 2 to 4 feet in diame t e r , which the ants h a v e cleared, a n d from which radiate trails used when the harvesters are foraging for food. Food consists mostly of seeds which provide both nutrients and, within the moist seeds, the colony’s supply of water.

I should mention that all the ants are female. That’s true except during that time each year when they start new colonies. At that time some eggs are fed diets that produce new queens and males. These will be winged and will soon emerge from the nest in mating flights. Virgin queens Foraging for food is a must mate at least twice and then particularly complex operation. fly off to start a new colony. The Early in the day ants called nest males, job done, die. patrollers roam about assessing the weather conditions for foraging. If they return to the nest in timely fashion, ants called trail patrollers, leaving scent trails, search for up to 200 feet for available seeds. Their return rate to the colony communicates successful or failed searches. If A new queen, finding a likely successful, forager ants follow the location, loses her wings, digs scent trails and harvest the seeds a tunnel, lays eggs, seals the found. On days with dangerous weather, such as extreme heat, entrance and waits for the eggs to the nest patrollers halt the entire hatch thus creating a new colony. Of what importance might process. harvester ants be to us? Their The ants themselves are about tunneling aerates the soil.
