This grant will be used to purchase software that will essentially make report writing, record keeping, evidence collection easier to document. In creating a web based database of this caliber, officers will be able to access it at any time and from any place throughout the school district. The grant will also offer ongoing trainings and tech support for officers. The grant was initiated by Sergeant / Investigator Pedro Bermea and supported by Javier Garcia and Chief of Police Trinidad Lopez. Chief Lopez was impressed that RGCCISD was already ahead with what he had envisioned for the district. Congratulations to Luis Hector Martinez, Grulla Gators Ace pitcher for throwing a no-hitter on his last home game at Grulla Baseball Field against La Feria. Luis struck out 15 batters and gave up no runs. Luis did an excellent job all night keeping the La Feria team off their game with a great fastball and wicked curveball. Along with a good defense that made the plays look routine. He has been the Grulla Gators Ace pitcher for the past 3 years. Gators will face Robstown in the playoffs May 6th.

A Link to the past Starr County Sheriff Rene “Orta” Fuentes was contacted by Mrs. Esther Mendiola Lopez from McAllen, Texas about locating the cemetery that was featured in “Con Mi Gente” because she thought her father was buried there. Sheriff Fuentes with the help of Mr. Benito Saenz located the gravesite. Mrs. Lopez and her son Charles later visited the grave and brought flowers. The old cemetery had not been cleaned for decades, but La Grulla residents Jimmy Martinez and Benito Saenz and about 80 other volunteers cleaned it up and now family members can again visit the graves of their loved ones. For additional information on cemetery go to the story featured in “Con Mi Gente” by Rick Diaz or go to La Grulla Texas facebook page. (County of Starr Public Relations Office).

As a part of the Starr County for 70 years, the Starr County SWCD #332 wants to remind you that each of us has a connection to natural resources. The National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) is celebrating the 62nd year of Stewardship week April 30 – May 7, 2017. The 2017 Stewardship Week is themed “Healthy Soils Are Full of Life!” Soil is the starting foundation of all of the food we eat. Ruperto B. Escobar acts as the Chairman for Starr County Soil & Water Conservation District #332. The District was formed to assist to assist people in Starr County with the conservation of our natural resources. “Making the connection back to the soil, where our food gets its start is so important,” says Gene Schmidt. “The next time you sit down to a meal, take a minute to think about where your food came from, and the farmers and ranchers who helped produce it,” As they work to produce food for the growing population, today’s farmers and ranchers are dedicated to using responsible land-management practices to ensure a sustainable food supply and healthy land and soil for future generations. Starr County Soil & Water Conservation District #332 is a member of the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) which oversees the Stewardship Week program. Stewardship Week is one of the largest national annual programs to promote conservation. NACD represents the nation’s 3,000 conservation districts, which were established to encourage resource conservation across the country. For more information about Stewardship Week and conservation, contact Starr County SWCD #332 at (956) 487-5598 Ext 3. Property Owners Should Soon Start Receiving Appraisal Notices for the 2017 Tax Year You may soon receive an appraisal notice from the Starr County Appraisal District. The appraisal district mailed out appraisal notices on this Friday May 5, 2017. Your city, county, school district and other local taxing units will use the appraisal district’s value to set your 2017 property taxes. Under Texas law, county appraisal districts are required to notify property owners about changes in their property’s value. The notice contains important information about the property’s location, ownership and property tax exemptions that apply to the property. It must also include an estimate of the taxes by local taxing units if your property value increased in the last year. Property owners who disagree with the appraised value of their property, the exemptions or any other action by the appraisal district have the right to appeal to the Starr County Appraisal Review Board (ARB). The ARB is an independent panel of citizens responsible for hearing and settling property owner protests. The notice of appraised value includes instructions on how and when to file a protest, a protest form and the Comptroller’s Property Taxpayer Remedies. The deadline for filing a protest with the ARB is 30 days after the appraisal district mailed your notice of appraised value. The Comptroller’s publication, Property Taxpayer Remedies, explains in detail how to protest your property appraisal, what issues the ARB can consider and what to expect during a protest hearing. The publication also discusses the options of taking your case to district court, the State Office of Administrative Hearings or binding arbitration if you are dissatisfied with the outcome of your ARB hearing. Property Taxpayer Remedies is available from the Starr County Appraisal District at

Wolf spiders stay at home and are seldom seen Next to the main gate at Rancho Lomitas is a large security light which attracts lots of insects at night. We often see lesser nighthawks and various toads and frogs feasting on insects. As I walked near the gate, I noticed a dozen or more holes in the ground. Most were spaced several feet apart, were about a half-inch in diameter and had a little collar of mesquite leaflets around the entrance. What I observed was a habitat for wolf spiders. There are many kinds of wolf spiders and the ones living in these holes are called burrowing wolf spiders. They’re in the genus Geolycosa (GEEoh-lie-co-suh), of which there are 5 species; there may be several ofthem here in the Valley. “Geo” refers to the fact that they dig
burrows in the ground. Spiders, as you know, have four pairs of legs and, usually, a pair of palps extending from the mouth area to help handle food. The head and thorax are fused into one part of the body called the cephalothorax and the abdomen is usually somewhat eggshaped or globular. In the case of Geolycosas there are eight simple eyes on the front of the head. Two small ones above (like little eyebrows), two large ones in the middle and a row of four small ones below. The burrow is dug straight down, in loose or sandy soil, to a depth of up to three feet! The spider lines the wall of the tunnel with silken webbing to keep it from collapsing. I assume, but do not know, that the little collar of leaves at the entrance helps to keep rainwater from draining into the burrow. Most of a burrowing spider’s life
is spent clinging to the tunnel wall just below the entrance from where it can jump out to capture any small insect which may be passing nearby. The s p i d e r ’s sensitive to vibrations in the ground so that, as you approach, it drops down into its burrow and won’t return to the entrance for many minutes. Because of that, I’ve only gotten a few very brief glimpses of wolf spiders. I do, however, see lots of their burrows. Females lay their eggs in egg sacks which, on a nice day, they may bring to the surface to warm in the sunlight. Burrowing wolf spiders lead what seems to be a rather dull life but we should be thankful for their help in controlling the insect population. I’ve not heard of anyone being bitten by one. They’re one more part of the complex diversity of life forms in the thorny brush wilderness.
