RGCGISD VETERANS DAY CEREMONY
Rio Grande City Grulla ISD hosted a Veterans Day program at the Fort Ringgold Auditorium on Wednesday, November 9, 2022.
RGCGISD students, staff, administration, civic groups, and community members honored veterans of every branch, rank, and generation. Each veteran in attendance was given a token of gratitude for their sacrifice and service to our country.
Lieutenant Colonel Dr. James Falcon, a 1999 Rio Grande City High School graduate, was the guest speaker for this special event. Like his father, he is a trusted physician who served as an emergency medicine physician in the United States Army until recently. Dr. James Falcon served in the Army for several years after graduating from the University of Texas in Austin and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, holding various medical positions at home and while deployed to combat zones. Throughout his career, he worked as a physician in aviation, airborne, and special operations units, and he deployed to Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq. Dr. Falcon works as an emergency physician at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance in Edinburg, Texas. He is also a Lieutenant Colonel in the Texas Army National Guard and a battalion surgeon.
Afterward, the Revive Fort Ringgold Committee presented the honorary title of Colonel Fort Ringgold Commander to Robert S. Margo. The following day, Rio Grande City Grulla ISD hosted a ceremony to honor the additional names of veterans added to the Veterans Memorial Wall at Veterans Middle School.
The names added to the monument were: Mauricio Garza III and Jose D. Lopez, who both served in the Vietnam War. Also added to the monument was Luis Longoria, who served in World War II. This event also recognized all Veterans who have served our country.
Thank you to everyone who came out to support our troops. We’d also like to thank the RGCGISD ROTC, VMS Choir, Mariachi, Cheer, Drill, and Student Council for contributing to the ceremony.
On behalf of Mr. Adolfo Pena Jr., Superintendent of Schools, and the School Board of Trustees, we would like to thank all RGCGISD students, faculty, and staff who were instrumental in the planning and execution of this extraordinary event. We would also like to thank all veterans who took the time out of their schedules to participate and know we will be eternally grateful for your service. Thank you for the unselfish sacrifices you all made that makes our way of life possible.

One-Quarter of Texas Traffic Deaths Occur in the State’s Oil and Gas Regions
TxDOT urges drivers to slow down, focus 100% on driving in Texas energy areas
Statistics
• In 2021, more than 79,000 traffic crashes occurred in the state’s five main energy sectors— the Permian Basin, Eagle Ford Shale, Barnett Shale, Anadarko Basin and the Haynesville/ Bossier Shale—resulting in 1,119 fatalities. These deaths accounted for one-quarter of the state’s total traffic fatalities and marked a 20% increase over the previous year.
The Issue
• Oil and gas activity brings increased traffic and more large trucks sharing the road with passenger vehicles in production areas and surrounding
communities. When sharing the road with large trucks, motorists may experience limited visibility, changing road conditions and less room to maneuver should they encounter a road hazard.
Increased truck traffic also leads to more wear and tear on roads, posing challenges to drivers.
Tips
To help keep everyone safe on the road, TxDOT offers these important reminders for motorists:
• Follow the posted speed limit and adjust your driving to match road conditions.
• Focus 100% on driving and put your phone away: no talking or texting when behind the wheel.
• Give large trucks plenty of space. Be patient and pass only
when it’s safe and legal to do so.
• Maintain a safe following distance.
• Never drive under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
• Obey stop signs and traffic signals.
• Always buckle up—drivers and passengers, day and night. The information contained in this report represents reportable data collected from the Texas Peace Officer’s Crash Report (CR-3).
This information was received and processed by the department as of April 4, 2022. To view additional traffic safety data, visit TxDOT’s Traffic Safety Data Portal online. Nov. 7, 2000, was the last deathless day on Texas roadways.

Lung cancer is the second most common cancer worldwide
According to the World Cancer Research Fund International, lung cancer is the most common cancer in men and the second most common cancer in women.
But even families affected by lung cancer may be surprised to learn that children are not immune to the disease. Though lung cancer is very rarely found in children, kids can get it. The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention report that cigarette smoking is the number one risk factor for lung cancer, which could be why the disease is so often associated with adults.
However, the National Cancer Institute reports that incidences of lung cancer in children could be genetic. According to the NCI, a specific change in the DICER1 gene increases the risk for a
childhood lung cancer known as pleuropulmonary blastoma, which forms in the tissues of the lung and pleura (the organs between the lungs).
Families with a history of DICER1 syndrome, a rare, inherited disorder caused by a mutation in the DICER1 gene, are urged to speak to a physician about testing children for pleuropulmonary blastoma.

Veterans Memorial Elementary School 5th Graders Act As Teachers to Young Students
9th Annual Roma Walk All Over Cancer!!
Raul Torrecilla Gives Excellent Presentation
GFWC Club Presents “Meet our Heroes” to Middle School Students
Chairing the event was GFWC Club President Elia Ramos. Member Maribel Montemayor, principal of Ringgold Middle School, coordinated the event with Mrs. Ramos, bringing all the RMS seventh grade students. Sister Colette Kraus, SSND, brought the seventh and eighth graders from Immaculate Conception School.
Cathy Rubio spoke as Emma Trejo, the older sister of Korean Conflict POW, Gilberto Trejo. In 1952 Mr. Trejo and others from his troop were taken captive by the North Koreans. After two months of torturous captivity, Mr. Trejo and his comrades were liberated by US forces. Gilberto Trejo returned to Rio Grande City where he married, had six children, and was a Building Trades instructor for the school district.
The story of U.S. Army Cpl. Gregorio Barrera, former POW, WWII- Pacific was recounted through the portrayal of his mother,
Genoveva Barrera, by F.J. Scott Woman’s Club member, Dalinda Guillen. Gregorio Barrera was a prisoner of war and survivor of the Bataan Death March during WWII in the Pacific. Barrera was a proud, yet humble veteran of the US Army who survived one of the most horrific episodes of World War II. Known as a hometown hero, a plaza on northern Britton Ave. was named in his honor.
John A. Shuford’s story was told by Tissa Peterson, speaking as Johnny’s devoted wife of 64 years, Helen Valentine Shuford. For his courage under fire, 1st Lt. Shuford received the Presidential Unit Citation, the combat infantry badge, the Purple Heart after being wounded in France, the Bronze Star, and the Silver Star. His Silver Star medal nomination, by direction of the president, read… “Lt. Shuford’s courage and devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the armed forces of the United States.”
Portraying the role of Pilar Recio de Canales, wife of Manuel Canales, Nelda Laurel shared with the students about the heartache and anguish the Canales family had to endure in 1945. Via telegram, the family was notified that Arcadio, their youngest son, was killed in action on January 5 at the age of 19. Three months later, their
second son, Ernesto, was killed in action on April 27 at the age of 27.
A proclamation by Judge Joe M. Martinez Jr. on Veterans Day, 1987, stated that in recognition of the sacrifice of Arcadio and Ernesto Canales and the loss of the Canales family of two siblings from Starr County given for our country, Third Street in Rio Grande City would be designated as Canales Brothers Avenue.
Jeannie Anderson shared the story of Eloy Ruben Valle from the perspective of his college sweetheart. Eloy was drafted while attending college at the University of Texas Pan American. He fought valiantly for the United States in Vietnam for three months as an Army Specialist Four before being killed in action. Eloy was awarded the Purple Heart for his brave service.
Other GFWC members served as assistants at each of the stations, as seventh grade students from Ringgold Middle School and seventh and eighth grade students from Immaculate School attended the event and rotated in groups to each station to “Meet our Heroes.” All then attended and participated in the VFW program honoring all Veterans at 11:00 a.m. on 11/11 at the Veterans’ plot.
