Veterans and guests gathered for the annual Veterans Day ceremony at the county cemetery on November 11 at 11:00 am. Pastor Bob Alderman gave the invocation and benediction, followed by Letty Garcia, Veterans Service Ofﬁcer, reciting the pledge of allegiance and Melody Quiroz from RGC High School Mariachi Cascabel singing the National Anthem. The Global Alzheimer’s Platform Foundation® (GAP) and Dr. Antonio Falcon celebrated the opening of El Faro Health & Therapeutics in Rio Grande City, TX on Saturday, marking a historic day for South Texas and the medical research community across the nation. This groundbreaking initiative is the first private clinical research site in Starr County, which has the highest prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease in the country. El Faro will bring new Alzheimer’s treatments, resources, and research opportunities to the region with the specific goal of increasing Hispanic participation in clinical trials. The first study to be conducted at El Faro will be GAP’s groundbreaking BioHermes Study, which has made a landmark commitment to enroll at least 20% Black and Hispanic participants. Starr County – which is 97% Hispanic – has the highest prevalence of Alzheimer’s in the country at nearly 23%. Rio Grande City Grulla ISD hosted a Veterans Day program on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 at the Fort Ringgold Auditorium. Veterans of every branch, rank, and generation were recognized by RGCGISD students, staff, and administration along with civic groups and community members. Each attendee received tokens of appreciation for their sacrifice and service for our country. Lieutenant Colonel Melinda Lopez Latting, a 1996 graduate of Rio Grande City High School, was the guest speaker for this special event. She reflected on her life in a small town, and the rich history of Rio Grande City. She encouraged students to always listen to their teachers, and explained what all veterans have in common. Afterwards, the Revive Fort Ringgold Committee presented the honorary title of Colonel Fort Ringgold Post Commander to Samuel Ramos, and awarded Volunteer of the Year to Maria Elia Ramos. Before the ceremony ended two RGCGISD students, Brianna Elizondo and Susie Villarreal, played taps to honor all veterans who are no longer with us. On behalf of Mr. Adolfo Pena Jr., Superintendent of Schools, and the School Board of Trustees, we would like to thank all RGCGISD students, faculty and staff who were instrumental in the planning and execution of this very special event. We would also like to thank all of the veterans who took the time out of their schedules to participate.

Maria Yolanda Vecchio 05/07/1939 - 11/07/2021

Maria Yolanda Vecchio, 82 of Waynesville passed away on November 7, 2021. She was the daughter of the late Julia S. and Jose O. Perez. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Eisai P. Vecchio, Sr. and her son, Eisai P. Vecchio, Jr. She was born and raised in Texas and later moved to Canton NC. She was devoted to the Catholic church but also attended the Methodist church and was a Sunday School teacher. She

was a member of the American Red Cross and volunteered at the hospital gift shop. Her love and adoration were her children and grandchildren. She was an amazing and highly energetic woman in all parts of life Her passion was gardening and crafting. Surviving to cherish her memory is her three daughters, San Juanita G. Shaw (Gary King) of Troy, NC, Hilda V. Shadden (Chris) of Asheboro, NC and Yolanda Nora Vecchio of the home; and one son, Jose C. Vecchio of the home. She was blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be announced for December. In lieu of ﬂowers memorials may be made in her honor to your local churches. Entertain Safely This Thanksgiving As Thanksgiving approaches, use this checklist to ensure your home is ready for all the festivities of the holiday season. Fire Safety •Test your smoke alarms monthly and make sure your house is protected by an adequate number of working alarms, which should be installed in each bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of your home. •Keep halls, stairs and doorways properly illuminated and free of clutter and other objects that could hinder an escape during a fire emergency. •Plan for older guests or those with mobility issues to sleep on the ground floor. Decorating Safety •Avoid overloading electrical outlets, which can overheat and cause a fire. •Do not place extension cords where they could be tripping hazards. •Do not run extension cords under rugs or furniture. •Keep all decorations at least 3 feet from heat sources, including space heaters and fireplaces. •Think of youngsters: Place cords, breakables, candles and other potentially dangerous items out of children’s reach. •Turn off and unplug all decorations before leaving home

or going to sleep. •Use only weatherproof electrical devices for outdoor activities and protect those devices from moisture. Home Heating Safety •Have your heating system inspected annually by a licensed, qualified professional. •Use space heaters properly and safely. Keep them out of hightraffic areas and at least 3 feet from anything that can burn. •Do not leave a space heater running unattended. Turn off and unplug space heaters when you leave the room or go to sleep. •Never leave an open flame— especially in a fireplace— unattended. Child Safety •If you are hosting small children, put away small items that are choking hazards. Use safety gates at the top and

bottom of stairways to keep babies and toddlers safe. •Move all cleaning products and other dangerous items out of the reach of children and store them in a locked area. •Set your water heater temperature no higher than 120 degrees to reduce the risk of scalding. •Install tamper-resistant receptacles to prevent electric shocks and burns, or use safety covers on all unused outlets that are accessible to children. •Never allow children to play with electrical decorations or cords. “Medina EC realizes the importance of family time this holiday season and wants to help keep our members and their families safe while they spend time together,” stated Medina EC’s CEO, Mark Rollans.
