Mission Veterans Patriots Hold Off Determined Rattler Comeback Effort 26-24 By Kenneth Roberts, Freelance Writer The Mission Veterans Memorial Patriots used a fast start and clutch turnover-forcing defense to hold off a determined comeback effort by the Rio Grande City Rattlers and emerge with a hard-fought 26-24 triumph in a District 31-5A battle at Joe R. Sanchez Stadium Friday night. The undefeated Patriots jumped out to a 13-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and built their advantage to 20-0 before the Rattlers scored their first touchdown. Veterans scored another touchdown before the Rattlers scored the final 10 points of the first half to cut the margin to 26-17 going into intermission. The Rattlers scored again early in the third quarter and had several opportunities to take the lead, but the Veterans defense thwarted

several Rattler threats to preserve the Patriots’ victory. The Rattlers remain in serious contention for a playoff berth, but will have to defeat the Sharyland Rattlers in the Nov. 10 season finale. They will also need favorable outcomes of other games, especially for the Mission Veterans Patriots to defeat the Sharyland Rattlers on Friday, Nov. 3. Rattler quarterback Jason Perez scored one rushing touchdown and connected with Jorge Martinez for two scoring passes. Patriot quarterback Landry Gilpin threw two scoring passes and ran for another score, and ran through the Rio defense for huge yardage in the first half. The Rattler defense kept the Patriots scoreless in the second half and did an excellent

Guillen Encourages South Texans To Vote In The November Election

Representative Ryan Guillen (DRural South Texas) would like to remind everyone that early voting for the November 7th election has started, and to encourage all Texans to do their civic duty and vote. “Voting is an important power entrusted to us, and I hope that there is a large turnout for this very important election,” Guillen added. In addition to the various local issues up for election, there are seven constitutional amendments on the ballot, giving Texans a say in amending the Texas Constitution. The amendments cover a wide range of issues from taxes to charities, and are as follows: • Proposition 1 provides a property tax exemption for the charitably donated home of disabled veterans or their surviving spouse. • Proposition 2 cuts red tape on home equity loans by updating 20year old laws. • Proposition 3 puts limits on the terms of certain governorappointed positions. • Proposition 4 requires courts to notify the Texas Attorney General of any constitutional challenges to state law. • Proposition 5 allows more professional sports teams to conduct charitable raffles. • Proposition 6 creates property tax relief for the surviving spouse of a first responder who was killed in the line of duty. • Proposition 7 allows banks and other financial institutions to promote and encourage savings by awarding prizes by lottery. “Now is the time to let the voice of South Texans be heard on these important issues, so I hope more people than ever turn out and vote this year,” added Guillen. Election Day is November 7, 2017, but early voting started on October 23, 2017 and runs through November 3, 2017.

Border Patrol Makes Dr. Mario Ramirez Elementary 3rd Congratulations to Roma School Presentation at I&G Center Grade Students Received A Donation Floats Placing in City of Roma Parade

The Instructional and Guidance School had Border Patrol Agents A. Pena and R. Reyes from the Rio Grande City Station give a presentation, Operation Detour RGV, to our students. The presentation was set up by our counselor, Mrs. Selma Cantu, as part of our comprehensive Guidance and Counseling program for our school. The presentation video highlighted students from the Rio Grande Valley who made the wrong choice and are now incarcerated serving anywhere from 10 to 40 years. The students were all under the age of 16 at the time of making the wrong decision, came from different family households, and were average to above average students. The agents stressed to our students that if friends or even family members (as was the case with one of the students in the video) “insist that you or someone you know get involved with an illegal activity because it’s easy money or nothing will happen to you” that you take a Detour! According to the Agents, Operation Detour RGV is designed to encourage students to make the right decisions and choices so that they do not ruin their lives. The presentation is available to all schools and a huge Thank You to Mrs. Selma Cantu for being proactive and reaching out to our community partners such as Border Patrol. Also, Thank You Agents Pena and Reyes for making a difference in our Roma ISD community. (Write up and photo courtesy Maria Teresa Ramirez.)

Thank you to all the students and staff that participated in the 2017 Roma Fest Parade! We appreciate all students who participated and thanks to everyone who came out in support of our students!! NOVENA “Miraculous Prayer” Dear Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it, Dear Jesus, and place it within your own heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail.

TUESDAY NOVEMBER 7TH - I.C.C. 6:30 A.M. PRO POPULO - MASS SAID FOR THE PEOPLE

From the Desk of Judith A. Solis, Attorney at Law Hello Readers… in the upcoming weeks I would like to discuss wills, powers of attorney, and guardianships. These are legal topics that we all tend to ignore but that are very important. As an attorney with a strong concentration in family law, I see and advise many people on end of life or extended

illness or otherwise become incapacitated to make it less burdensome on our loved ones. I want to first discuss the difference between a power of attorney and a guardianship. Often, people think that they are the same thing. They are not. The most fundamental difference between both is that a power of attorney if temporary and can be revoked. A guardianship, for most purposes, is permanent. A power of attorney can be drafted by an attorney in the office and needs no other formal action. A guardianship must be filed with the Court and granted by a judge. So when should you use a power of attorney and when should you apply for a guardianship? A power of attorney should be used for persons who may need another to act in their stead only under certain circumstances or for a specific time. A guardianship should be applied for when a person needs permanent help because of a disability or infirmity that is permanent. I will talk more about these topics in the upcoming weeks. As always, please remember that if you have a legal situation or problem, it is BEST to consult in person with an attorney. This column is simply advice I give to help readers because they are commonly asked of me. Until next week…

STARR COUNTY TOWN CRIER, NOVEMBER 1, 2017, SECTION II, PAGE 3

Don’t take any chances. Get your flu shot now By Bob Moos, Southwest public affairs officer for the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services The flu is nothing to sneeze at, especially if you’re an older adult. Anywhere from 140,000 to 710,000 Americans are projected to land in the hospital this year as a result of the flu and its complications, and 12,000 to 56,000 are expected to die from flu-related illnesses. Adults 65 and older will account for as many as 70 percent of the hospital stays and 85 percent of the deaths. As people age, their immune system typically weakens and their ability to ward off diseases declines. That puts older adults at increased risk of the flu. Moreover, the virus can cause complications for those already struggling with chronic health problems.

As flu season gets underway, you’ll want to wash your hands and stay away from sick people to reduce the spread of germs. But as useful as those preventive steps are, an annual vaccination remains the best way to help protect yourself against the flu virus. You have several flu shot options. Besides the traditional flu vaccines that help protect against three strains of the virus, there are now “quadrivalent” vaccines that help protect against four strains. This year, there are two vaccines designed specifically for people 65 and older. Both the “highdose vaccine” and the “adjuvant vaccine” are supposed to provide a stronger immune response and, therefore, better protection against infection when you’re exposed to the flu virus. Talk to your doctor about which

flu shot option is right for you. Get your vaccination as soon as possible. The vaccine will protect you within two weeks. The flu season typically begins about now, peaks in January or February and runs through May. If you’re enrolled in Medicare Part B, your flu shot won’t cost you anything, as long as your doctor, health clinic or pharmacy agrees not to charge you more than Medicare pays. There’s no deductible or co-payment. The same is true for the vaccines designed especially for older adults. If you were vaccinated last year, you’ll still need another shot this year, since your immunity to flu viruses wanes after a year. Also, the types of viruses usually change from season to season, so new vaccines are made each year

to fight that season’s most likely strains. Despite the higher risk that flu and its complications pose to older adults, the vaccination rate within this age group remains much lower than it should be. Only 63 percent of adults 65 and older are vaccinated each year, far short of the public health goal of 90 percent for this group. Why? Some older adults don’t understand that the flu can be serious and life-threatening, so they don’t think a flu shot is worth their time and effort. Others resist annual vaccination because they believe it’s risky, even though decades of experience have shown flu shots to be safe and effective. If you’re concerned about a serious allergic reaction or some other medical condition that may make the flu vaccine unsafe for you,

you should consult your doctor before a vaccination. Otherwise, it’s important to remember that you can’t get the flu from the flu shot. Side effects are rare. Most people notice nothing after their vaccination. A few may have sore muscles or a slight fever. But those

side effects usually last just a day or two. No matter how healthy or youthful you may feel, don’t wait to be vaccinated. When you get your shot, you’ll protect not only yourself but also those around you. By avoiding the flu, you’ll avoid giving it to family and friends.

Some diurnal (day-flying) moths look like wasps

Application is being made with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission for a Wine and Beer Retailer’s Off-Premise Permit by Dolgencorp of Texas, Inc. d/b/a Dollar General Store #18184 located at 5993 E US Hwy 83, Rio Grande City, Starr County, TX 78582. Officers of said Corporation are Steven R. Deckard, CEO, John Garratt, CFO, and James W. Thorpe, Secretary/CMO.

I’ve been c h a s i n g butterflies for some years but I’ve also become interested in moths, some of which are magnificent and most of which are fascinating. One of my early misconceptions was that moths fly only at night. Not so! Quite a number of moths are diurnal, that is, they fly during the daytime. One other conceptual problem is knowing what’s a moth and what isn’t. To distinguish moths from butterflies, it’s helpful to get a good look at the antennae. Butterflies have thin, linear antennae with a knob at the end. Moths have either linear antennae with no knob or fringed antennae that look like feathers. Moths also tend to have thicker, fuzzier bodies although skipper butterflies can fool you. The flying critter which led me to write this article is appearing regularly on my blue mist plant

which was planted to attract butterflies. It doesn’t look like either a butterfly or moth. It appears to be some species of wasp. The mystery critter sent me to my library of nature field guides. In one of my insect books a found a paper wasp which looked much like it, but not quite. It did make me a bit concerned about being stung. The “not quite” led me to a wider search in more books and, to my surprise, my book on moths identified it as a Texas wasp moth. It mimics the true paper wasps, probably as a means of protection. Many predators which would eat a moth avoid wasps for the same reason you and I would. The Texas wasp moth (Horama panthalon texana) looks like it has only one pair of wings because,

when it lands, it holds the larger fore-wings at right angles to the body and folds the hind-wings under the fore-wings. The wings are a dark, dusty brown, the body, less than 1 inch long, is dark brown, with a slight bluish iridescence, and the head, thorax and abdomen are all marked with bright gold to orange spots and bands. It’s quite an attractive creature. There’s a white spot at the base of each fore-wing and a white band where the thorax and abdomen meet. The legs are golden-orange but the outer segment of the hind legs is thickened and black. On the male, the black portion of those legs is “hairy.” The larvae (caterpillars) are black with an orange stripe along each side and have lots of black and white tufts; they like eating the leaves of desert yaupon. I’ve also learned, by observation, that the adults enjoy blue mist flowers. I hope to learn more about these fascinating, diurnal moths which look like wasps. Wild things are amazing.
