NOVENA “Miraculous Prayer” Dear Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it, Dear Jesus, and place it within your own heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail.

Thank you to Starr Readers for the organization’s generous donation of one new book to all 1st Grade students at Roma ISD! The organization’s founder, Karen Furlong, visited with students and presented the children with a brand new copy of “Frozen”. The softcover book included a read-

along CD that would allow the students an added opportunity to hear the book read to them or to read along with the CD. Furlong has been bringing books to Starr County students since 2008. Her passion for assisting Starr County students stems from her own connection

to Rio Grande City where her grandparents resided for more than 60 years. “I vividly remember spending holidays and summers at my grandparents’ house in Rio, picking up books and falling in love with reading there and now I just hope these kids will share

that love,” she said. “Reading can take you anywhere.” Furlong’s organizational mission, stated simply on her Web site, is to “enamor children with reading at an early age to encourage a lifetime of joy which books can provide.” During her visit at each campus, she encouraged the students to always keep a book nearby and read as much as possible to not only learn, but to appreciate that books can open you to a world of possibilities you didn’t know existed. “We sincerely thank Ms. Furlong for her continued generosity to the students of Starr County and specifically Roma ISD,” said Roma ISD Superintendent Carlos Guzman. “Some of our students are not in a position to afford to own their own books and this meant a lot to them. I know they were overjoyed and some of them just couldn’t believe that they could actually take the books home! You know it makes a real difference and it’s a lesson that will stick with our students when they see someone like Ms. Furlong go out of her way to do something so nice for them. She gave them the gift of literacy, but she’s spreading the gift of generosity and we are very grateful.” For more information about Starr Readers visit http://www. starrreaders.com/index.html.

Texas Ethics Commission Experts To Answer Questions, Explain How to Avoid Ethics Violations
The Texas Ethics Commission (TEC) will host its 2017 Fall Ethics Training on Thursday, Nov. 30, 1- 5 p.m., at the Texas A&M International University Student Center (Room 231) in Laredo, Senator Judith Zaffirini announced.

The workshop will focus on topics that are relevant and timely for elected officeholders, candidates, campaign treasurers, and volunteers. These include the Dos and Don’ts of campaign reporting, advertising and financing. Equally important, TEC experts will show attendees how to comply with statutory requirements and how to avoid fines (often $500-$15,000) and other negative consequences of violating ethics requirements. “I am delighted that TEC will host this popular training in Laredo for the first time,” Senator Zaffirini said. “The event usually is held in larger cities, but officeholders, candidates and other leaders in South Texas expressed a keen interest in receiving this important training at a convenient location close to home.” To register and for more information contact Patti Shannon at the Texas Ethics Commission, 512/463-5809. Registration also may be completed online via https://www.ethics.state.tx.us/ tec/TrainingSession-Laredo2017RegisterNow-v2.html. Anyone interested, including journalists, will be welcomed! Senator Zaffirini is a longtime champion for strengthening ethics regulations and preventing cronyism and corruption. What’s more, she has sponsored and passed five bills improving processes and procedures at the Texas Ethics Commission, thereby enhancing efficiency and accountability for candidates and officeholders. “Texas’ ethics requirements are an important public accountability tool, and it is critical that candidates, officeholders, campaign treasurers and volunteers understand and adhere to them,” Senator Zaffirini said. “This workshop is a wonderful opportunity to learn the current rules and identify ways to avoid fines.”

Jesus Maria “Chuy” Alvarez

Named 2017 10 Best Texas Attorneys

Growing up on Alvarez Rd. in Starr County, TX. I was the youngest of five of a family that were migrant workers and Spanish was the first language. It was at this time that I learned of the creation of the Declaration of Independence “the foundation for this new and Independent Nation, 201 years after its adoption the year was 1978 and 241 years as of today and the fact that of the 56 signers of the declaration, 25 were lawyers” Texas Bar Journal That’s what inspired me to be a lawyer. Why is this important because it was a way to change or have an impact and influence to change the course of history; you don’t need to be the loudest person in the room or even the most remembered. You can be the Best Mom, Neighbor, Teacher, Coach, Priest, Police Officer, Firefighter and Doctor etc. You can be that person or mentor you can be that thinker, that mediator or that volunteer, but you need to work hard day in day out everyday to be the Best. The declaration was a historic first step in what remains an ongoing fight for liberty; a fight we defense lawyers continue. Never doubt the importance of the work done by all the great lawyers who came before us especially here in Starr, Duval County and Rio Grande Valley. Where I was privileged to learn and accept everyone as my teachers or mentors. They were indeed the best criminal lawyers in Texas back in 80’s & 90’s. I learned from the very best. Thanks to my colleagues that are in heaven may you all RIP love you-miss you! ! Also, thanks to those lawyers that remain to fight for liberty and continue the good deeds. Now that those great lawyers planted the seed. Here we are with this honor of being the 10 Best Attorney in Texas. The experience that they gave me. Also, the many

years of experience I have gotten over the last 33 years. They sure didn’t come without a big sacrifice. It came by hard work every day without ever thinking of a personal reward or a personal advantage or gain. You must dedicate your life to serving your clients 100% because they depend on us in time of need. While it is hard to stay focused and not be influenced by politicians, family, money or social media; as a Lawyer I took an oath “to support the Constitution of the United States and the State of Texas and will honestly demean myself in the practice of Law, I will also discharge my duty to my clients to the best of my ability.” Lastly, while I have tried over 300 jury cases in over 200 counties in Texas and over 30 states in USA and by average handled 700 cases a year of Personal Injury, Immigration, Criminal, Divorce, Real Estate etc. It is always about serving the clients without reservation. It cannot go unsaid without good family, friends, clients, staff and formidably opposition this honor and recognition wouldn’t have been possible. I am certainly surprised by my success. To be fair, getting to this point doesn’t come without hundreds of sleepless nights, but it also comes with a tremendous amount of people who push you and believe in what you are trying to accomplish. To the people of the great State of Texas, Starr County and Rio Grande Valley thank you all for your strong encouragements and help. We did it together even if you didn’t notice. I will continue to serve and respect personally every client that walks in my life and respect them with the same force of character, intellect and winning personality that defines my life. Enjoy, God Bless! Sincerely Jesus Maria “Chuy” Alvarez

Make It to the Table: Don’t Drink Ringgold Elementary Participated at the RGC High School Homecoming and Drive this Thanksgiving Eve Watch UR BAC urges consumers to plan a sober ride As millions of Americans get on the roads to travel home and spend the Thanksgiving holiday reconnecting with friends and loved ones, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service’s Watch UR BAC program is serving them a reminder: “Make It to the Table: Don’t Drink and Drive this Thanksgiving Eve.” The Wednesday night before Thanksgiving is a cultural phenomenon called “Thanksgiving Eve,” an evening associated with drinking and a big night for bars. From 2012 to 2016, more than 800 people died in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes during the Thanksgiving holiday period (6:00 p.m.

Wednesday to 5:59 a.m. Monday), making it the deadliest holiday on our roads. Watch UR BAC and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will be running a blitz social media campaign, “Make It to the Table: Don’t Drink and Drive this Thanksgiving Eve.” On Nov. 22, the day before Thanksgiving, all of Watch UR BAC’s social media channels will be exclusively sharing content on the importance of not drinking and driving, and planning ahead for a sober ride home – a true takeover. Social posts, Instagram images, and tweets with hashtags #buzzeddriving and #designateddriver will be

available for organizations to participate and help distribute this critical message. Watch UR BAC is urging the public and the media to help spread the word, and to take precautions, so everyone can make it to the table this Thanksgiving by: Planning ahead and designating a sober driver before the first drink. Using public transportation, a taxi, ride share service, or your community’s sober ride program to get home safely. If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact your local law enforcement agencies. Whether riding or driving, always wear your seat belt.

DPS Urges Drivers to Fill Up Cornyn, Blumenthal Bill to Protect Children from Online Predators Signed Into Law Background: President signed into law assistance, and prevention and Chiefs Police Association. on Safety for Thanksgiving theThePROTECT The PROTECT Our Children community education. Our Children Senator John Cornyn, a As Texans prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is reminding motorists to make safety a priority and to enjoy the holiday weekend responsibly. “Thanksgiving should be a time of celebration with family and friends, and we are encouraging everyone to take some simple but potentially life-saving steps to celebrate responsibly,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “DPS Troopers will also be on the lookout for drivers who needlessly endanger others by disregarding the law. Everyone, especially motorists, has a part to play in keeping our roadways safe, and it is imperative that you take this responsibility seriously.” DPS Troopers, and other Texas law enforcement agencies, will be patrolling aroundthe-clock during the holiday weekend looking for drunk drivers, speeders, seat belt violators, and other motorists who are endangering themselves or the public. During the Thanksgiving weekend in 2016, DPS troopers issued 51,592 traffic citations and warnings for a variety of violations, including speeding, no insurance and seat belt/child safety seat usage. DPS patrols also resulted in 275 driving while intoxicated arrests, 198 fugitive

arrests and 141 felony arrests during the same time period. DPS offers the following tips for safe travel during the Thanksgiving holiday: •Do not drink and drive. •Slow down – especially in bad weather, construction areas, heavy traffic and unfamiliar areas. •Eliminate distractions while driving, including the use of mobile devices. •Buckle up everyone in the vehicle – it’s the law. •Don’t drive fatigued – allow plenty of time to reach your destination. •Drive defensively, as holiday travel may present additional challenges. •Before your trip begins, make sure your vehicle is properly maintained and always double check to make sure all cargo is secure. •Slow down or move over for police, fire, EMS, Texas Department of Transportation vehicles and tow trucks that are stopped on the side of the road with emergency lights activated – it’s the law. Also, show the same courtesy to fellow drivers stopped along the road. •Monitor weather and road conditions (https://drivetexas. org) wherever you are traveling. In the event of inclement weather, use extra caution on roadways.

Thousands of people line the streets of midtown Manhattan every year to catch a glimpse of the balloons and performers marching in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Millions more will tune in to watch it on television. The Macy’s parade is intertwined with Thanksgiving, making it as much a part of the holiday as turkey and pumpkin pie. The parade has evolved throughout the years, and the history of the parade is both interesting and informational. Historians believe the parade was instituted by European immigrants who made up the majority of employees at the retail giant Macy’s. In the 1920s, employees who were now proud Americans wanted to celebrate with traditions that were similar to traditions in Europe. This included a parade down the streets. Animals were borrowed from the Central Park Zoo, bands played and

marchers wore different costumes. In 1927, concern for children lining the parade route led parade officials to replace live animals with the signature helium balloons people now know and love. A dragon and Felix the Cat were some of the first balloons. The festivities continued to grow during the 1930s, when Santa was added to the parade’s growing list of participants. 1933 was the only year that Santa led the parade rather than closed it. During World War II, the parade was put on hiatus, as the rubber for the balloons and the helium was donated to the war effort. The parade resumed in 1945 and was televised only in New York. The 1947 film “Miracle on 34th Street” made the parade even more popular. NBC televised the parade nationwide the following year, drawing viewers from all over the country.

Act, a bipartisan bill introduced by U.S. Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT). This legislation will reauthorize the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force Program, a national network of 61 coordinated task forces representing 3,500 federal, state, and local law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies that combat online child exploitation across the country. U.S. Senators Dean Heller (R-NV) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) are original cosponsors. “Equipping law enforcement with the tools they need is vital to protecting our most vulnerable online,” Sen. Cornyn said. “I’m grateful to my colleagues on both sides of the aisle and to the President for supporting victims and the law enforcement agencies that combat and prevent these crimes.” “The PROTECT Act reauthorizes critical task force programs – empowering state and local law enforcement to combat child abuse, protect survivors, and prosecute perpetrators who prey on the vulnerable. This significant bipartisan bill is a solid step forward in the fight against predators and the horrific crime of child exploitation – and a warning against any criminal who would exploit our children online. I am proud to see this critical measure become law,” said Sen. Blumenthal. “I applaud the President for signing our bill to help protect children from predators,” said Sen. Heller. “This bipartisan legislation will empower local law enforcement – like police departments across Nevada – with the tools they need to more effectively pursue criminals who abuse and exploit children. I thank Senators Cornyn and Blumenthal for their leadership on this proposal, and I’m honored to have been part of the team to push it over the finish line.” “As a former prosecutor, I know the importance of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force Program for our law enforcement officials,” Sen. Klobuchar said. “This law will help us continue this critical collaborative effort to protect children from predators on the internet.”

Act, originally passed in 2008, authorized the ICAC Task Force Program, a coordinated group of task forces representing 3,500 federal, state, and local law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies engaged in reactive and proactive investigations across the country. This legislation built upon work Senator Cornyn began as Texas Attorney General, when he created the Texas Internet Bureau to fight internet crimes like child pornography. The ICAC Task Force Program helps local and state law enforcement respond to technology-facilitated child sexual exploitation and internet crimes against children, and offers guidance on victim support, forensic investigative components, training and technical

Some people mistake sphinx moths as hummingbirds At dusk on a nice day, if you’re out strolling past a flower bed, you may see what appears to be a hummingbird hovering at a flower and drinking nectar. In early evening when the light is failing, what you’re more likely seeing is a sphinx moth or hawk moth as they’re sometimes called. There are about 100 species in North America and several of them are found here in the Valley. Since I don’t have space to tell you about all of them, I’ll pick one of the more common species, the Ello sphinx, and tell you about it. The Ello sphinx moth is 3 to 4 inches in length and wingspan. It has rather narrow wings the forewings of which are grayish brown and may have a few dark stripes. The smaller hind-wings are

a rosy-orange bordered in dark blackish-brown. The body is a robust size and tapers to a point at the posterior end. If the moth holds still enough for you to see it, the body has a stripe down the middle of the back with lines looking like little ribs on each side. On the head are a pair of antennae and two eyes. A moth, such as the sphinx, has a very long probosis (tongue) which is coiled up unless it’s extended to reach the nectar in a tubular flower. The wings beat very rapidly, when it’s flying, in the same manner that the wings of a hummingbird do. They can both hover and fly very fast. From my description and the illustration you can readily see why many people think they’re seeing a hummingbird and not a moth. Sphinx moths are lepidoptera like other moths and butterflies. That means they have wings covered with colorful patterns made of tiny colored scales. It also means that they’re insects with three pairs of legs along with two pairs of wings and their life cycle includes compete metamorphosis (egg, larva, pupa, adult). The sphinx moths we see lay eggs which hatch into caterpillars. The caterpillars of sphinx moths are called hornworms because,

typically, at the posterior end there is a tail or “horn.” The horn isn’t hard or dangerous but predators don’t know that. The caterpillars body is quite smooth with no knobs, bumps or hairs. The Ello sphinx caterpillar is green with a black spot on the top just behind the head and a yellow stripe along each side. Many other sphinx caterpillars have a series of diagonal stripes on their sides. Ello caterpillars are said to feed on poinsettias, guava, spurges and saffron plum. When fall comes and the caterpillars have grown to full size, they pupate. That means that they drop to the ground, dig a short distance into the ground or leaf litter, and encase themselves in a tough, brownish bag. It’s a little bit like becoming a mummy. When spring comes, an adult moth emerges from the pupa case and the cycle repeats the following year. Next time you see a hummingbird, take a second look and maybe you’ll see a moth.
