Mr. and Mrs. Lino Canales, Jr. have been selected for the honor of serving as Parade Marshals of the 2018 Rio Grande City Greater Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade, set for Friday, December 7, at 7:00 p.m. Lino Canales, Jr. is the son of Lino and Claudina Canales, and Rebecca G. Canales is the daughter of Hernan and Hermenegilda (Hila) Garza. Lino and Becky were wed on April 14, 1968 and recently celebrated their Golden Anniversary. They met when he was managing Starr Grocery for Pedro “Pete” and Ramona Diaz and continued with the Valley Mart Stores for 27 years. Lino also helped Mr. Diaz put together the Diaz Subdivision and the Fort Ringgold Golf Course. They owned Plaza Fabrics, which was managed by Becky at Starr Plaza Shopping Center. Before that, at the age of 10, Lino’s first job was at Piggly Wiggly owned by Felipe V. and Edna Ramon. Lino spent three years in the early

1960’s in Germany while serving with the U.S. Army where he earned the rank of Sergeant. Becky grew up working alongside her parents at their theater (Teatro Mexico) and H&H Drive In theater, which kept the entire family busy. The hard working couple later opened their own chain of grocery stores called El Chaparral Supermarkets Inc., locally and throughout the Rio Grande Valley and South Texas. In 1986 they started the Starr County Town Crier with the help of Cesar Leal. The Crier, printed its first edition on January 1, 1986. This weekly newspaper, with a circulation of 15,000 copies, was recognized with a proclamation by the State of Texas House of Representatives and signed by Representative Ryan Guillen on their twentyfifth anniversary in 2011. The Senate of the State of Texas made a proclamation honoring the Crier on its 30th anniversary in 2016, signed by Senator Judith Zaffirini. The Crier was initially located on Chaparral Blvd. near the location of El Chaparral Supermarket but is currently on South Norris Drive in the Diaz Subdivision. Their slogan, since its beginning, has been “For the Progress of Starr County,” since “…we intend to service the merchants and citizens of the county and print the good things that are happening around us every day.” In 1989, Lino received an award for Outstanding Businessman from the Rio Grande City Chamber

of Commerce for outstanding achievement as a business and for contribution to the local economy. Becky and Lino have had the support and assistance of their four children throughout their years of service to the community. Lino Canales III is an admission supervisor at South Texas Health System; daughter Maricela Canales is a teacher at Dr. Mario E. Ramirez Elementary; and sons Jorge and Javier work with their parents at the Town Crier. The Canales family is active in Immaculate Conception Church, and Becky is a member of Texas Delta Theta Master of Beta Sigma Phi, where she has earned the highest degree of that organization, the Torch Bearer degree. The Canales family and their businesses have received much recognition and appreciation for their involvement with the community from various entities, including the Starr County Fair Association, Starr Soil & Water Conservation District #332, Rio Grande City Parks and Recreation Basketball League, Starr County 4-H Program, Rio Grande City High School DECA, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, Vaquero 4-H Kids Fishing Day, Rio Grande City CISD Adopt-a-School Program, Rio Grande City Public Works Dept. Clean Sweep Project, the Retired Teachers Association’s School Bell Award, and the District 1 Retired Teachers Association from Laredo to Brownsville for publicity and support of the local unit, Starr County Retired School Employees Association. Becky and Lino Canales have been exemplary business leaders in our community, and Rio Grande City is proud to honor them as parade marshals.

SANTISTEVAN Continued from Front Page Texas Music Educators Association sponsors the Texas All-State Competition. This competitive process begins throughout the state in auditions hosted by 33 TMEA Regions. Individual musicians perform selected music for a panel of judges who rank each instrument or voice part. From this ranking, a select group of musicians advance from their region to compete against

musicians from eight TMEA area competitions. The highestranking musicians judged at the TMEA Area Competition qualify to perform in a TMEA All-State Music Group. Only the top 2.6% of musicians who initially audition become All-State musicians. “We are so proud of Marco, who has shown great dedication to his musical studies in not only his time as a middle and high

To: All Natural Gas Customers: If you smell the odor of natural gas outdoors or indoors, contact the Company at (956) 849-1411 IMMEDIATELY. There is a dispatcher on duty Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and a serviceman is on call after hours and weekends. After hours call (956) 847-7006. The Company will respond to natural gas leaks regardless if the leak is on the Company’s gas lines or your piping. If it appears that escaping gas has entered a building so that an explosion or fire is imminent, then vacate the building without turning light or other switches on or off and call “911” from a nearby phone. The City of Roma Gas Department does not maintain your buried aboveground pipe beyond the gas meter. If the pipe is not maintained, it may be subject to potential hazards of corrosion and leakage. You, as a natural gas customer, are responsible for the maintenance of the gas piping from the gas meter to and throughout the building and all piping and equipment up to the appliances. Your pipe should be periodically inspected for gas leaks, active corrosion and pitting, especially any buried pipe. To ensure your safety, repairs should be made if any unsafe conditions are discovered. A qualified plumber or a corrosion control specialist can assist in locating, inspecting and repairing your underground and aboveground piping to insure safe and dependable natural gas service. If any excavating is to occur near your buried pipe, the pipe should be located in advance and the pipe excavated with tools to avoid damages using powered machinery. This information is being furnished to you to help prepare your response to natural gas leaks and natural gas related emergencies and to advise you of recommended maintenance on your home line piping.

media, tablets, smartphones, and other distractions as they try to encourage their kids to unplug and spend more time being physically active. But parents can try various strategies to get kids off the couch and exercising. · Set a positive example. Kids, especially young children, often try to emulate their parents. Parents can capitalize on kids’ desire to be like mom and dad by exercising in front of their children. Young children may not be ready to lift weights or run on the treadmill, but parents can embrace kid-friendly exercises, such as walking and cycling. Invite kids along for daily bike rides or go for family walks around the neighborhood after dinner. · Park the car. Kids don’t

need to know they’re exercising in order to be more physically active. If possible, parents can walk youngsters to and from school rather than driving them. · Choose friend-friendly activities. Adults employ the buddy system as a means to motivate themselves to keep exercising, and that same principle can apply to children, who might be more excited about physical activity if their friends are joining them. Team sports provide chances to exercise with friends. But even inviting a child’s friend along on a family hike or bike ride may make such activities more fun for kids. · Give gifts that encourage physical activity. Kids might want the latest device or video game for their birthdays, but

parents also can give gifts that encourage youngsters to be physically active. Bicycles, rollerblades, ice skates, and sports equipment are just a handful of potential gifts that may compel kids to exercise more. Childhood obesity is a significant problem, with the 2015-2016 NHANES reporting that 20.6 percent of youths between the ages of 12 and 19 were obese. Getting kids off the couch and exercising more often can help reduce those figures and ensure healthier futures for kids of all ages.

Safety Measures For Teen Drivers Young adults gain independence through a series of milestones throughout their youth. But few such milestones are more anxiously anticipated than the day when teenagers earn their drivers’ licenses. For teenagers, drivers’ licenses mean the difference between being at the mercy of adults for transportation and being able to set off on their own. Even though a license to drive indicates a teen has passed the written and road tests necessary to drive without adults present, newly minted licensed drivers may still not be ready to drive without supervision. In fact, statistics indicate that teenagers may benefit from a little extra instruction and guidance before they’re given the keys to the family car. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among American teens. According to State Farm, young Canadians represent only 13 percent of the licensed driving population, but account for approximately 20 percent of the motor vehiclerelated deaths and injuries across the country. The highest perdriver and per-distance fatality rates are found among drivers between the ages of 16 and 19. According to Geico, one in five 16-year-old drivers has an accident in their first year of driving. Teenagers who want to drive and stay safe on the road can employ these safety tips. · Keep an open attitude. Consider increasing road time under the instruction of an adult and learn from their guidance. Ask for help if there is a driving skill you haven’t mastered, such

as merging onto a busy highway or parallel parking. · Limit other teen passengers. The CDC says the presence of teen passengers increases unsupervised teen drivers’ crash risk. Until you are secure behind the wheel, avoid the temptation to give a bunch of friends a ride. · Stick to daylight driving. Geico says the risk of a fatal crash is three times greater at night for every mile driven. Reduced visibility and reaction time can contribute to crashes. Gain ample experience driving during daytime hours and make sure you are completely comfortable behind the wheel before setting out at night. · Practice in all conditions. Safe driving involves making smart decisions even when driving conditions are poor. With an adult in the passenger seat, practice driving in inclement weather, only venturing out in such conditions on your own when you feel ready to do so. · Turn your phone off. Smartphones put all motorists at risk of accident. In the time it takes drivers to look at incoming texts, they may have driven several hundred feet without their eyes on the road. Make it a policy to turn smartphones off while driving. · Slow down. Speed is a common factor in automotive crashes involving teens. Follow posted speed limits at all times. · Drive unimpaired. Do not take drugs or consume alcohol or other substances that impair your ability to drive. Teens can stay safe behind the wheel by playing it smart.

Ospreys can be seen along the Rio Grande Once when I was participating in the Audubon Society Christmas bird count, as I have for several years, I was assigned part of Roma that includes what’s called the overlook, a rock outcrop atop the high river bank near City Hall. It offers a viewing platform with benches and sweeping views up and down the River. My observations included an extended and memorable view of an osprey soaring along the river and above the overlook. If you’ve not watched an osprey, you should spend some time at the overlook. Ospreys are impressive birds and are often seen there. Ospreys are large birds of prey with several distinct features. They’re two feet long and five and a-half feet from wing tip to wing tip. That’s a big bird. On the top side they’re a glossy, dark brown. On the lower side they’re mostly white. Across the eyes and back onto the neck is a dark band. If you get a close view, you can see a blue area, which is called the cere, at the base of the black beak. At the midpoint of each wing, the wrist, is a dark brown patch which makes them easy to identify as they fly overhead. You’ll also notice, as they soar, a kink or bend in the wings that creates a kind of “M” shape.

Since they’re such large birds, they have few predators except for eagles and large owls. Raccoons may also raid nests. A significant decline in their numbers did accompany our use of DDT but they have since increased in numbers and are found on all continents except Antarctica. Here in the Valley, we can see them anytime except for the coldest times when they may briefly migrate south. They mate for life and are an impressive member of our diversity of wild things. I hope you have many opportunities enjoy our native plants and animals including the magnificent ospreys.

Two each way allows a firmer grasp of fish which are slippery. It’s a bit like our opposable thumb. Their nest consists of large heaps of branches and some aquatic plant material piled in an upper, forked crotch of a tall tree or on a high rock outcrop. To preserve and increase their population, conservationists have occasionally built tall platforms for them to build nests on. A nest may be reused for years, even decades. Two to four eggs are laid, the young hatch in about five weeks and fledge in a couple of months. While they can expect to live seven to ten years, one was recorded to have lived twentyfive.

Their diet is almost exclusively fish which accounts for them sometimes being called fish

hawks. To catch fish they soar well above the water looking for fish near the surface; they may hover for a few moments and then, with talons extended before them, dive into the water. The dive may actually plunge them well into the water. They have an extra eyelid called a nictitating membrane which acts like goggles allowing them to see under water. They also have closable nostrils to keep the water out. Then. rising quickly back to the surface, they fly off, if lucky, with the fish in their grasp. Another unusual and useful feature is that they possess a reversible outer toe, just as owls do. It can perch or grasp either with three toes forward and one back or two toes in each direction.
