Electric Transmission Texas (ETT) has generously provided a check for the amount of $2,500.00 towards the Volunteer Firefighters program. They personally appreciate the commitment to improving the quality of life in the community. ETT is a utility joint venture between American Electric Power (AEP) and Berkshire Hathaway Energy Company, whose purpose is to build, own and operate electric transmission projects within the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). ECHS Junior Class of 2025 Deliver Thanksgiving “Room Service” Hats off to the Starr County 4-H Champs!!!

In spirit of the Thanksgiving season, Preparatory for Early College High School would like to thank all of the staff and Cougar families for always supporting the students! The Junior Class of 2025, went around the campus delivering their Thanksgiving “Room Service” to all teachers and staff as a well deserved gift of appreciation. In addition, Ecology Club, NHS, and Junior Class officers were able to provide 5 Thanksgiving baskets to ECHS families. The baskets were a complete collaboration from all 3 clubs to create an entire Thanksgiving meal from Turkey to dessert.

How to establish fitness goals for kids Physical activity benefits people of all ages, including kids.

Despite widespread recognition of the positive impact physical activity has on children, many kids are not getting enough exercise. In an analysis of data collected as part of the 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that less than one in four children between the ages of six and 17 participates in 60 minutes of physical activity per day.

When established in childhood and adolescence, good habits like exercising regularly can set young people up for a long, healthy life.

Perhaps in recognition of that, parents often look for ways to promote physical activity to their youngsters. Setting fitness goals is one way to help young people exercise more, and the following

are a handful of strategies parents can try as they seek to promote a love of physical activity in their children. · Include fun activities in a fitness plan. Adults recognize the importance of planning when aspiring to achieve certain goals, and a plan can be just as integral to getting kids to be more physically active. When devising a fitness plan, parents should be sure to include activities kids find fun. Just because Dad liked playing baseball doesn’t mean his children will. Identify activities that kids enjoy, whether it’s hiking or cycling or playing an organized sport, and include that in the fitness plan. · Involve kids’ friends.

Parents often make exercising a family affair, but a 2015 study led by a researcher affiliated with Cincinnati Children’s

Hospital Medical Center found that children who exercised with friends were far less likely to cite barriers such as lack of enjoyment or lack of energy as reasons for not exercising. In essence, kids are more inspired to exercise with friends than they are with family members. When establishing fitness goals for kids, parents can work with other parents so kids can pursue those goals together, increasing the chances that those pursuits will be successful. · Set aside time to exercise each day. Physical activity should be part of everyone’s daily routine, and kids are no exception. Such activity does not need to be a grueling workout, and indeed children’s bodies will need time to recover after especially strenuous exercise.

But setting aside time each day to be physically active is a good

way to ensure kids’ lifestyles are not predominantly sedentary. · Make the goals attainable.

Parents may know before kids begin exercising or notice shortly after they start being more physically active how much kids can reasonably handle. The YMCA notes that’s an important factor to consider, as fitness goals should be attainable so anyone adjusting to a new regimen, even kids, stays motivated. A child’s pediatrician can advise on how much exercise youngsters should get each day, and parents can help kids gradually reach that point by setting challenging but attainable goals.

Regular physical activity can benefit kids for the rest of their lives. Parents can pitch in by embracing various strategies to help kids establish attainable goals that make fitness fun.

Medina Electric Cooperative Linemen Return from International Electrification Mission in Guatemala In early November, two dedicated linemen from Medina Electric Cooperative, Edward Varnador and David Hernandez, successfully participated in an electrification mission to the rural village of Matasano, Zacapa, in the Republic of Guatemala.

The project aimed to bring the transformative power of electricity to a community still living without this essential resource.

Situated in a mountainous region, Matasano villagers adhere to traditional Mayan practices, relying on wood fires for cooking and candlelight for essential tasks such as schoolwork. Many modern conveniences dependent on electricity are conspicuously absent in their daily lives.

The initiative was coordinated through NRECA International, an organization with a longstanding history of providing safe, reliable, and affordable electricity to developing countries. For over 60 years, NRECA International has adopted a cooperative approach to low-cost rural electrification, mirroring the principles that guided U.S. electric cooperatives over eight decades ago.

Medina Electric Cooperative, representing Cooperative Principle Number 6, “Cooperation Among Cooperatives,” collaborated with linemen from other Texas cooperatives to contribute their expertise to this

meaningful project. Varnador and Hernandez leveraged their knowledge and experience to construct approximately 47 power poles to include five transformers along four miles of primary line and three miles of secondary line.

The manual labor to transport equipment in this mountainous region proved difficult, but not impossible. The efforts of the linemen and villagers ultimately provided power to approximately 65 homes adding two light switches, two outlets and four lights. In addition, these efforts also electrified a local school and church.

The success of this initiative is a testament to the collective efforts of 10 Texas electric cooperatives, including Medina EC, and numerous business partners such as CoBank, Schneider Engineering, LineTec, Texas Electric Cooperatives, and other sponsors. The project received overwhelming support, raising more than $250,000 to finance this critical endeavor.

Medina EC CEO Trey Grebe expressed his pride in the linemen, acknowledging their personal sacrifice and commitment to fostering positive change in an unfamiliar environment. He emphasized the significance of this electrification effort, recognizing its potential to improve the standard of living for generations in Matasano.

Grebe stated, “I’m proud of our linemen, Edward and David, for agreeing to travel internationally to a rural village to help the community grow and thrive. I acknowledge that it was a personal sacrifice for them and their family to be away, embarking in conditions that are unfamiliar, and facing new challenges in a different culture.

However, the opportunity to support this village is going to make a real difference in the lives of the local people helping them reach the first steps to improving their standard of living for generations to come.”

The electrification of Matasano is anticipated to yield positive economic impacts—increased work production, growth in local businesses, enhanced daily life, and expanded educational and health opportunities. Beyond the installation of poles and wires, the linemen’s experience resonates with the people and the community they have empowered.

Upon his return, Varnador expressed, “I enjoyed every bit of the trip—the view and the villagers were my favorite.”

Hernandez concurred, adding, “The most memorable part was seeing the villagers’ faces when we showed up. They were willing to help with whatever was needed to get power. The look on their faces was priceless.”

The impact of reading on personal health Roma Fire Department Has a New Brush Truck!

Books transport people to different times, provide a sense of escapism and introduce readers to different schools of thought.

Individuals may read for pleasure and/or to expand their intellectual horizons. It’s important to note that reading also may help improve mental and physical health.

Reduces stress - Immersing yourself in a story requires focus and concentration. According to researchers at the University of Sussex, it took just six minutes of reading for study participants to experience slower heart rates and reduced muscle tension.

Stress is one of the biggest threats to overall health, as the stress hormone cortisol can lead to inflammation in the body that may impede the immune system, according to Piedmont Health.

Finding ways to reduce stress, including through activities like

reading, is a win for anyone who wants to improve his or her health.

Impacts longevity - According to the 2016 study, “A chapter a day: Association of book reading with longevity,” by Bavishi A, Slade M.D., reading exerts its influence on longevity by strengthening the mind. Reading positively impacts the way the brain creates synapses, optimizing neurological function.

It also expands vocabulary, and helps with memory.

Changes the brain - A 2014 study published in Neuroreport determined reading involves a complex system of signaling and networking in the brain. As one’s ability to read matures, these networks become stronger and more sophisticated. MRI scans found that brain connectivity increased throughout studied reading periods and for days afterward.

Helps improve sleep - Reading is an effective way to wind down and relax before going to bed. It can be a positive nighttime ritual, provided one reads a paper book or utilizes an e-reader that is not backlit, as bright lights from digital devices may hinder sleep quality. In fact, doctors at the Mayo Clinic often suggest reading as part of a regular sleep routine.
