A SAN ANTONIO
Amen.

group included 38 boys and co-ed teams from across the Rio Grande Valley and Laredo, which met at the Roma High School Campus for the competition. Try to imagine what a Raider Competition is - many people visualize a military competition with sit-ups, pushups, running and other military tasks. However, Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, known simply as JROTC, isn’t a formal military organization. It is a citizenship program designed to teach leadership, confidence, appreciation for community service, and other qualities that will help young people succeed in whatever they do after high school. And the Raider Competition isn’t like the U.S. Army Ranger Competition, or even like an Army Physical Fitness Test. “A good way of describing Raider,” said Retired First Sergeant Juan Cruz, JROTC
instructor at Roma High School, “is comparing it on a team level to a Tough Mudder, Spartan Run, or Warrior Dash. You have to train up and prepare weeks in advance, just like any in any sport. This is an extreme sport that incorporates a lot of critical thinking, mental and physical capabilities that push the participants to the limit, and things like team work and leadership are tested.” But unlike a Spartan or Tough Mudder, a Raider has 10 competitors on a team, and eight team members compete at any time, and others can be rotated out. This event is about team work, and not one or two people who do it all by themselves. The events in the competition include the Military Rope Bridge Construction, Hummer Pull, 4K Rucksack Relay Run, Combat Fitness Course and 14-Obstacles Course. Roma’s
JROTC Program acts as the host school and prepares the course, provides the signage, meals and the equipment for the annual competition. Each of the Raiders has his or her favorite event, including Cadet CSM Eliezer Hernandez who said he likes the Combat Fitness Course the best because of the five different events in course. But all cadets agreed that hard work and training for the specific events is a requirement in any of the events. This year the Raider field was the largest in the event’s history, with more than 400 cadets participating! The event continues to give the Roma High School’s JROTC Program and the local community a huge spotlight on what a community can do when everyone comes together for a good cause. The City of Roma Police assisted JROTC, section II, page 3
Visit Rancho Lomitas where it’s all about nature! While sitting beside my RV on November 12, 2017, for just 2 hours in the morning, I observed, all from within 50 feet, the following bird species: altamira oriole, audubon’s oriole, black-crested titmouse, cactus wren, cardinal, curvebilled thrasher, golden-fronted woodpecker, great kiskadee, green jay, house sparrow, inca dove, mockingbird, orangecrowned warbler, pyrrhuloxia, scaled quail (13 at one time), white-tipped dove, white-winged dove. Where else can you do that? During the same 2 hours, I also
saw 5 butterfly species: empress leilia, large orange sulphur, snout, queen, cloudless sulphur. I also saw a darkling (or stink) beetle, eastern cottontail rabbit and an indigo snake (6 feet).
Where else can you do that? A few minutes later, at a different Ranch location, I observed a rare, threatened reticulate collared lizard!
Where else? Only at Rancho Lomitas!
If you read my articles, you have an interest in nature. Surprise, here in Starr County you have one of your best opportunities to observe nature. Rancho Lomitas, only about seven miles north of Rio Grande City, offers nature tours on 4 days each month, the first and third Fridays and Saturdays. For $15 you get a two hour guided tour and some refreshments. Hours are 10 a.m. to noon. Call 486-2576 to register and get instructions on how to get here. I say “here” because it’s where I live and I can attest to the amazing wildlife diversity here at the Ranch. I hope you’ll visit us soon and enjoy nature firsthand.

Revamped toolkit helps shield elders, What Consumers Can Do After a Data Breach vulnerable adults from financial exploitation In the digital age, consumers are · Examine credit reports. years before ultimately using to Updated “Managing Someone Else’s Money” guides just in time for holidays AARP and Texas Appleseed are releasing updated versions of five “Managing Someone Else’s Money” guides—fresh with references to recently enacted laws—in time for the holiday season when many families gather for important decision-making conversations. The series of guides, originally distributed in March, are a tool for financial caregivers in Texas who manage money or property for those unable to do so for themselves. The interactive resource is available online, in English and Spanish, at www. ProtectTheirMoneyTX.org. Printfriendly, PDF versions are also available for download. Nearly 3.5 million unpaid family caregivers in Texas provide a great labor of love by helping their parents, spouses and others manage their financial affairs; however, they often lack the tools they need to avoid scams, fraud and unintended conflicts of interest. In addition, about $5 billion in Texans’ assets are controlled by a court or guardian, a complicated task for which few individuals are prepared. The new toolkit, with five guides, fills this void and helps financial caregivers know the best ways to safeguard loved ones and their assets. “Increasingly, Texans are acting as fiduciaries. They’re managing money or property for aging loved ones,” said Bob Jackson, AARP Texas director. “These fiduciaries and other supporters are a critical source of assistance for older Texans… But these folks often have no training. We hope the guides will be a helpful reference for caregivers, other family members and the organizations devoted to helping them.” The updated series of guides includes changes to several Texas laws that impact the ability of caregivers to manage someone else’s money. The updated guides come at a time of the year when families often gather around the table to discuss caregiving decisions of a loved one. During conversations like these, AARP and Texas Appleseed’s set of guides can walk Texas caregivers through their duties, provide information on scams and financial exploitation, and list resources. “Financial exploitation of
vulnerable Texans is a growing problem, with just 1 in 44 cases ever reported,” said Ann Baddour, director of Texas Appleseed’s Fair Financial Services project. “This toolkit offers important information to help ensure that loved ones who can no longer manage their money are well taken care of and do not become victims of financial abuse.” Each of the guides is tailored to the needs of different fiduciary/ supporter capacities, including people who are: • agents under a power of attorney, • appointed by a court to be guardians or conservators, • named as trustees under revocable living trusts, • appointed by a government agency to manage income benefits, and • acting as a supporter under a supported decision-making agreement. A legal team from Baker Botts, led by former Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Tom Phillips and Keri Brown, provided pro bono support to create these guides. The state-specific guides were adapted for Texas from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s “Managing Someone Else’s Money” series.
more vulnerable to such breaches than ever before. Data stolen as part of the Equifax breach included names, social security numbers and birthdates, among other personal information. Consumers concerned about data breaches can take certain steps to determine if they have been compromised while also taking measures to safeguard themselves against future breaches. When breaches happen Hackers who gain access to consumers’ personal information can steal identities, file false tax returns, take out loans in unsuspecting consumers’ names, and commit a host of other crimes that can negatively affect consumers’ credit ratings and compromise their ability to secure loans in the future. When a breach happens, consumers should do the following. · Contact the agency that was affected. After acknowledging it had been breached, Equifax set up a website where consumers could find out if their information had been compromised by the breach. When using such websites, consumers should make sure they are using secure connections, as they will be asked to enter personal information.

Even if individuals’ personal information was not compromised, they can monitor their credit reports for suspicious activity. Many credit card companies now provide monthly credit report updates to cardholders. Individuals should monitor these to see if any new accounts have been opened without their knowledge. If ratings suddenly plummet despite relative inactivity from consumers, they should contact one of the major reporting agencies for a thorough report. Such reports are typically free once per year. · Continue monitoring credit reports. Individuals should take advantage of the monthly credit rating reports offered by their credit card companies even if no breaches have been reported. Hackers may sell consumers’ information, which thieves can then sit on for
commit financial fraud. Routine monitoring can help consumers instantly address any suspicious activity before things spiral out of control. · Place a fraud alert on all accounts. Fraud alerts warn creditors that individuals may have been compromised by past data breaches, forcing them to verify that credit or loan applicants are legitimate before they can open any new accounts or take out any loans. · File taxes as early as possible. Criminals with access to consumers’ personal information can file false tax returns and steal their refunds before consumers even realize they have been victimized. File early, before thieves have had a chance to file false returns.

Get to the truth about dieting and weight loss
Weight loss is a popular resolution come the new year. But in spite of that popularity, the resolution to lose weight is no small task. When resolving to lose weight, men and women will encounter an abundance of information about dieting and weight loss. It’s difficult to know who to believe and to determine which plans will be effective. Research published by Shape magazine says nearly one in three young people embark on a new diet each month, but 45 percent give up after one week, and about half abandon their goals within a month. Data released in the Daily Mail in 2013 said that although one in seven (13 percent) women in the United Kingdom stick to a diet for 13 weeks or more, nearly one in five (19 percent) succumb to their favorite food cravings after a month. What’s the magic formula for weight loss? Experts advise that there isn’t any. Weight-loss strategies that require fad dieting or restrict certain foods may not produce long-term success. Rather, a lifestyle overhaul is often the most effective weight loss strategy. · Recognize that quick fixes do not work. Drastic weight loss approaches may produce immediate results, but such plans are not sustainable. Drastic plans include certain detoxes and cleanses; diets that eliminate all but a few foods; some prepackaged foods; and foodreplacement strategies. Feelings of deprivation or boredom may

make people following these diets unsuccessful in the long run. Losing weight means changing one’s food and exercise plans over the long haul. · Eat in regular intervals. Researchers at the National Weight Control Registry offer that spacing food evenly throughout the day is the key to successful, long-term weight loss. People who eat healthy food at regular intervals are better nourished, think more clearly and report fewer mood swings than those who eat erratically. · Recognize that not all carbs are bad. People trying to lose weight often hear that they should increase protein consumption and drastically reduce their intake of carbohydrates. While it’s smart to reduce consumption of processed carbs and those that are made largely of white flour, there are some healthy carbohydrates, including beans, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. · Be flexible. As a person’s body ages, his or her metabolism will change. Men and women should revisit their recommended caloric intake every few years. In addition, men and women can routinely revisit their exercise routines to determine the efficacy of those routines and alter their workouts to reflect the physical changes their bodies are going through as they age. A person’s first step before dieting or attempting to lose weight should be to consult their physician, who can help men and women achieve their weight loss goals in a way that’s healthy and easy to maintain for years to come.
