Joyeria Daisy Celebrates the Grand Opening of their New Location

The Rio Grande City Economic Development Corporation would like to congratulate Joyeria Daisy on the grand opening of their new store in Rio Grande City.

The Rio Grande City Greater Chamber of Commerce hosted the event on Monday, November 21, 2022.

For 28 years, Joyeria Daisy has been a family owned business and now, siblings Daisy and Jesus Garcia are taking the reins in this new chapter.

“I want to thank everyone for helping us celebrate today and I want to thank our parents because without them this would not have been possible,” said Daisy Garcia.

Roma ISD is super proud of the hard work the Roma High Mighty Gladiator Football Team put into giving the fans an amazing season, ending with their first playoff appearance in several years! Thank you to the players and coaches for giving 1000%. Thank also goes to all the students that supported the team including the trainers, the Mighty Gladiator Band, the Dazzlers, the Cheerleaders, and the RHS Student Council. Lastly, thank you to the fans for cheering the team on through the highs and the lows.

Program do? Can they help me?

A: The Diabetes Prevention and Control Program (DPCP) at DSHS works with partners across the state and funds Diabetes Prevention and Diabetes SelfManagement Education and Support classes. It also offers educational resources on diabetes that are available in both English and Spanish and can be accessed online or requested for print. The DPCP also publishes the Diabetes News You Can Use Newsletter on a quarterly schedule. DPCP staff assists the Texas Diabetes Council (TDC) by hosting and coordinating council meetings which are open for the public to attend.

Although, these are the main activities the DPCP conducts, general diabetes questions or inquiries can be emailed to diabetes@dshs.texas.gov. The DPCP staff will try their best to provide answers and referrals to the right contacts and/or resources.

Thanks to UT-RGV Recruiter Karla Romero for helping with the admissions application for some Roma High Class of 2023 Seniors. Karla is a Gladiator Alum, and it makes The Gladiator Nation so happy to see a Roma High Alum working to help current students on their path to success!

Roma High School Seniors and Juniors had a chance to hear from a recruiter for Ivy League schools. The students heard about the terrific opportunities to study at some of the most prestigious universities in the nation. Thank you to Starr County native and Yale Alum Juan C. Salinas for sharing his knowledge and advice with the students!

R.G.C.H.S. Migrant Club

The R.G.C.H.S. Migrant Club collects food items every year to donate to Rio Grande City High School families. This Thanksgiving a total of six baskets were collected. On November 17, 2022 the Migrant Club gave away thanksgiving baskets to six lucky R.G.C.H.S. students. On behalf of the Rio Grande City High School Migrant Club would like to thank R.G.C.H.S. Credit Recovery students, Migrant Tutors and everyone who donated items to make these baskets possible. This year’s Thanksgiving basket give away was a huge success.

The City of Escobares, Texas is seeking to fill the following position:

FINANCE DIRECTOR

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Plan and prepare the annual budget for the City. Plan and direct a budget workshop with the City Council at least twice per year. Direct the general financial operations of the City. Prepare monthly financial reports for the City Council. May be asked to serve as financial advisor to the City Council from time to time. Will work with external auditor in the preparation of the City’s Annual Financial Audit Report. May be asked to assist with and prepare budget and monthly financial reports for the Escobares Economic Development Corporation. Other related duties as assigned.

Successful candidate must have some experience in financial accounting, general bookkeeping experience and some knowledge of the use of QuickBooks accounting programs. Some knowledge of the laws and policies governing municipal finance and accounting practices and procedures preferred. Starr County Precinct 2: Advertisement and Invitation for Bids “Reconstruction of Salineño Community Center Phase #2 Indoor Reconstruction”

Starr County Pct. 2 is requesting bids for furnishing all labor, materials, equipment, supervision and performance of all work required for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Indoor Face to the Salineño Community Center. The project consists of demolishing and reconstructing of the indoor community center.

Bid Documents and Information towards the reconstruction may be obtained at the office of Commissioner Peña in Roma, Texas. The office is located at 500 East Grant St. Roma, Texas at Roma Motor Mart.

American Advertising Federation wants to “strike” out hunger among college students

The Rio Grande Valley Chapter of the American Advertising Federation (AAF) is sponsoring a “Time to Give, Grinches” bowling tournament with all proceeds going to food pantries at local colleges and universities.

It’s all part of a public service initiative to give back to the community.

The AAF is considered the unifying voice of advertising and is made up of members that

work at advertising agencies and marketing departments Valleywide.

“We wanted to take on a meaningful cause and make a difference,” explained A.B. Barrera who serves as 2nd Lt. Governor of the AAF 10th District made up of chapters in Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas.

“We’ve learned that some of our students today have to choose between buying lunch or putting

gas in their cars to get to class. It’s been an ongoing problem, but the recent pandemic really brought the issue to light.”

At South Texas College, the greatest need is on the Starr County campus where the poverty rate is at 25% according to U.S. Census data.

“We not only give out food to the students; we make sure they are taking enough home for their families,” said Campus

Administrator Arturo Montiel.

Recognizing the great need for help, the American Advertising Federation will host an ugly sweater bowling tournament Dec. 7. at Flamingo Bowl in McAllen. Twenty-four teams

will vie for bragging rights and help raise funds to fight hunger.

Sponsorships of different levels are available and teams of four can sign up for $150.
