Veterans Middle School Student Hernandez Funerals honors VFW Post 8526 and Council Works on Pilot Program American Legion Post 382 Funeral Honor Guard

In collaboration with Rio Grande City Parks and Recreation and Working on Wellness Environments - Texas A&M Agrilife Extension (WOW), Rio Grande City CISD Veterans Middle School Student Council students worked on a pilot program to test the walkability from the m i d d l e school towards Miriam Vale Park. “I know parents have been calling in regards to the sidewalks. Following this project, kids have

already told me they feel safer,” says Rio Grande City Parks and Recreation director Frank Eguia. Currently this area lacks sidewalks and visibly painted walkways. The purpose of this Community Challenge is to incite conversation and observe the behavior of not only the kids but of the community. The demonstration will be on display for the week. WOW incorporates interviews of students and interacting parties into feedback from surveys that are administered in the days following the initial demonstration

to compose a full comprehensive study. The Community Challenge and other studies alike can be used to promote awareness and attract funds to address the needs of our growing city. This specific collaborative project with WOW is made possible by a CDC Grant Members from the VFW Post 8526 and American Legion 382 Funeral Honor Guard have a dinner awarded to Texas A&M AgriLife sponsored Hernandez Funerals on Wednesday October 20, 2021. DSHS investigates rare human case of rabies The Texas Department of State Health Services is investigating a case of rabies in a child who was bitten by a bat. The child is a resident of Medina County and is currently receiving care in a Texas hospital. Public health personnel have identified all places where someone could have come into contact with the bat or the rabies patient and directly contacted anyone who may have been exposed. Health officials are assessing them to determine their risk and whether they should receive post-exposure vaccination to prevent them from getting sick with rabies. People who need to be assessed

have received a phone or written notification from DSHS. Those who were not contacted have no need for concern over this situation. Rabies is a viral illness that usually spreads through the bite of an infected animal. It may also be possible to transmit the virus if infected saliva enters the eyes, nose or mouth or a break in the skin. Once someone becomes sick with rabies, it is almost always fatal. However, the illness is preventable if rabies vaccine and immune globulin are administered before symptoms start. There are a number of things people can do to help stop the

T h e Coronavirus pandemic has dramatically impacted the local blood supply in the Rio Grande Va l l e y . Before COVID, blood donation events could be found regularly. However, since COVID, our local blood supply and blood drives have dwindled. As COVID-positive numbers continue to decline in the Valley, hospitals are in need of blood donations for medical procedures postponed during the pandemic. Blood donations are necessary not only for these medical procedures, but also to treat accident victims, cancer patients, and others. Liam Arney, a senior at McAllen High School and a candidate for the highest rank in Scouting, Eagle Scout, will host a blood drive in coordination with Vitalant Blood Services Sunday, November 7, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church Parish Hall at

Lark Avenue and 23rd Street in McAllen. Anyone interested in donating may sign up in advance with the event QR code on the event flier. This will also allow Vitalant to plan staffing needs for the event. Walk-ins will also be accepted. “As I looked at options for my Eagle Scout project,” Arney said, “it became clear to me that a blood drive would have the most significant impact on our community. It is an honor for me to plan, prepare, and host this blood drive. Knowing that every Vitalant blood donation stays in the Valley, I can’t help but think of the individuals who live here whose lives may be saved by the blood donated November 7.” During the most difficult stages of the pandemic, the one way people could help others was to open their wallets, Arney explained. Now there is an opportunity for people to give-and it won’t cost a cent! By taking 30 minutes out of your day, a blood donor can not only help our local blood bank and our community but can also help an aspiring Eagle Scout.

spread of rabies: •Never approach wild animals. •If bitten or scratched by a bat or any other animal, wash the wound immediately with soap and water. Then, seek medical attention to be assessed for potential rabies exposure. •Ensure domestic dogs and cats are up to date on rabies vaccination, as required by state law. •Consider protecting livestock and domestic ferrets by vaccinating them. In Texas, skunks and bats account for most animal rabies cases, but any mammal can become infected and potentially spread it to other animals or humans. Last year, nearly 600 animals tested positive for rabies across all regions of the state; about half were bats. The last human case of rabies in a Texas resident was in 2009. DSHS will not release any additional information about the current rabies patient to protect the patient’s identity. Additional information on rabies in Texas is available at dshs.texas.gov/idcu/ disease/rabies.aspx.

Rio Grande City Grulla ISD Curriculum and Instruction Department visits elementary campuses for Halloween

On Friday, October 29, 2021, the Rio Grande City Grulla ISD Curriculum and Instruction Department dressed up in various Disney Themed Halloween Costumes and visited the ten elementary campuses. The Curriculum and Instruction Department participated in costume parades down the hallways where students lined up and received Halloween treats, high fives and fist bumps. The event was planned by the

directors and their staff for several weeks ensuring there would be no duplicate costumes. Mrs. Elsa Morris, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction awarded prizes to the best three costumes. The panel of judges awarded the following individuals: First Place: Mrs. Cindy Solis (Alice in Wonderland’s Mad Hatter), Second Place: Mrs. Krystal Garcia-Saenz (Moana’s Te Fiti), and Third Place: Ms. Ayssa

Hinojosa (Corpse Bride). Seeing the excitement of all the students made the extraordinary effort of the entire C&I department well worth it. The department would like to thank Mrs. Marissa Saldivar for planning the visits and coordinating with all the campus principals, and a special thanks goes out to Mr. Juan García, Director for Transportation Department for his support in providing access to the newly wrapped school bus for the group.
