Roma ISD School Board Approves Purchase of Ballistic Shields

Roma ISD’s School Board recently approved the purchase of 10 ballistic shields for the Roma ISD Police Department, enough for each officer stationed at each Roma ISD campus.

“At a total cost of more than $76,000 these shields can save lives and ensure our police department can act quickly and efficiently in case of an emergency

at any campus location,” said Roma ISD Superintendent Carlos M. Gonzalez Jr. “We want to thank our school board for their decision to approve this purchase that will empower our officers and give them access to equipment that some other districts have not yet funded. I see this as an essential tool, and we look forward to continuing to provide tools and technology that can enhance safety at Roma ISD.”

Ballistic shields are protection devices deployed by police to stop or deflect bullets and other projectiles fired at their carrier. They are an important tool for police departments to be prepared for any active shooter or combative situation.

“The support of our

superintendent and school board has been great in providing added tools, manpower and support in the wake of tragedies that continue to occur across our state and the world,” said Roma ISD Police Chief Benjamin Gonzalez.

“Honestly we hope we never have to use these shields, but the community can be assured that we are prepared and ready if the need ever arises. We are passionate about protecting the students in our community and vow to do whatever we can to keep them safe. Thank you Superintendent Gonzalez and to the Roma ISD School Board for continuing to empower us in our mission.”

The shields are expected to be delivered by December 2022.

Dear Editor, I would love it if your newspaper mentioned about cases of Covid, and here in this city not a lot of people care about it. They need to be informed that they need to be careful going out to protect themselves.

I am going to be a social worker soon I am still a student at South Texas College. They tend to be out in different places, and I want my future clients to be healthy. Not a lot of people seem to care that covid is not going away. This is a great opportunity to talk about covid issues and how to prevent

themselves not get sick. The problem is that even though some people are getting vaccinated worst-case scenario you can still get covid. This city needs to do better because whenever I go out, I see customers coming in and out from stores majority do not wear masks and gloves.

I always do see sanitizers and again some people do not bother putting in their hands and this is bad. We do not know if they have Covid, some do not have symptoms. Majority of them need to wear gloves, because it is protecting their dirty hands. The

same goes with coughing, forget to cover their mouth. Masks, gloves, social distancing, and sanitizer play a huge factor to prevent not to get sick and the people that surrounds them. It is good thing I see some workers wearing masks and gloves in order to not for people to get covid.

I do hope this city does better in order for everyone to stay healthy with your loved ones. They need to be cautious so they will not be sick. I do hope they follow the guidelines.

Letter to the Editor

To the Editor,

Hello, my name is Jazmine and I am a social work student at South Texas college.

Seeing the passionate of your newspaper, I bring notice of the incidents that occur almost every day in our city and almost all over the United States. We must be aware and take notice to bring safety and bring calm to our people.

Gun violence has been an issue most of our lives and history. Do to this, many innocent victims were cause serious harm and have taken away innocent lives in

our city. A part of gun violence, number of people with buying guns from an unknown seller to buying a gun with just an ID. We don’t have the accommodations to ensure safety within our city to ensure the people are safe within our streets. We witness the tragedy in a city where a young man horrified shot and killed innocent children and teachers in an elementary school. If we made more accommodations and have more set of rules for buying a gun, then maybe this incident can be prevented in the future. However, accidents will happen

no matter what we do to prevent it.

This is way, I want to encourage the people who read the newspaper and social media that we need to be careful from engaging in gun violence and try to urge them to follow and set more rules. Maybe we can save a whole lot more of innocent lives.

Sincerely, Jazmine Cadena

Studies Find Hunters Not Using Hearing Protection at High Risk of Hearing Loss

(Pinkston News Service) —

Depending on where you live in the U.S., hunting season for largegame and fowl is open, or is about to be. For many gun owners, this means the risk of hearing loss goes up as large bore rifles and shotguns come off the racks and out of safes to see action once again. As men, women and children head out to the fields, forests and blinds, experts have offered a number of options to protect their hearing, their health and their hunt.

Noises greater than 140 decibels (roughly the amount a jet engine at take-off) can permanently damage hearing, but many long arms exceed that threshold by as much as 30 decibels. Study after study confirms that hunters and target shooters without adequate ear protection (after adjusting for age and other factors) were more likely to have a marked high-

frequency hearing loss than those who had ear protection.

Some studies have shown that 70% to 80% of hunters “never wear earplugs or earmuffs.” Mayo Clinic Health System Ear, Nose and Throat specialist Dr. Thomas Lowry told the Mayo Clinic News Network, “I’m an avid sportsman, and I’m amazed by how many people don’t wear hearing protection when they shoot guns.”

To prevent danger, there are strategies one can adopt to mitigate the possibility of hearing loss. Among the recommendations from the American SpeechLanguage-Hearing Association: using or wearing hearing protection devices when shooting, double-protecting your ears (by putting earmuffs over plugs when shooting big-bore firearms) and making hearing protective devices a requisite part of your shooting

gear.

Another option is to adopt the use of silencers or suppressors. These gun barrel attachments shave off 20-35 decibels from each report, reducing very loud and damaging noises to a safer level.

Silencer Shop (www.silencershop. com), the largest silencer distributor in the U.S., assists buyers in acquiring these highly regulated but effective tools for protecting the aural health, selling suppressors for virtually every firearm setup — even for fowling weapons like shotguns, frequently among the loudest of long arms.

Suppressors also provide benefits apart from your hearing.

If you hunt with family or a friend, they can protect the hearing of both you and your companions, as well as improve your chances of bagging that trophy, say hunting experts.

Drivers Must Be Aware Of Pedestrians As Days Get Shorter

Pedestrian traffic deaths increase in Texas during fall and winter months

It will be more challenging to see pedestrians as days get shorter during the fall and winter months. That’s why TxDOT’s “Be Safe. Drive Smart.”

pedestrian safety campaign is kicking off National Pedestrian Safety Month, reminding drivers and pedestrians to stay alert and watch out for each other.

Pedestrian traffic fatalities increased by 15% in Texas in 2021. The state saw 5,366 traffic crashes involving pedestrians last year, resulting in 841 fatalities and 1,470 serious injuries.

“The fall season means not only a shift to cooler temperatures but also fewer hours of daylight, and visibility becomes an issue,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams. “It’s important

for motorists to pay attention and look out for people walking, and for pedestrians to make sure they take steps to be seen.”

TxDOT’s pedestrian safety campaign includes TV and radio spots, billboards and digital advertising. TxDOT will also be hitting the streets and bringing its walking billboards—street teams wearing sandwich boards—to the 10 districts that saw the highest numbers of fatalities from pedestrian-related traffic crashes.

To address the high number of pedestrian-related crashes and fatalities in these areas, TxDOT is deploying more than 30 street teams to display pedestrian safety messages in places where vehicles and pedestrians share the road.

TxDOT encourages everyone to follow these safety tips to prevent a deadly encounter:

For drivers:

•Stop for pedestrians in crosswalks.

•When turning, yield the right of way to pedestrians.

•Be cautious when passing stopped buses or other vehicles.

•Pay attention and put your phone away, so you’re always prepared if pedestrians enter your path.

•Follow the posted speed limit and drive to conditions.

For people walking:

•Cross the street only at intersections and crosswalks.

Look left, right, then left again before crossing.

•Make eye contact with drivers before crossing. Don’t assume drivers see you.

•Follow all traffic and crosswalk signals.

•Use the sidewalk. If there isn’t one, walk on the left side of the road, facing oncoming traffic.

•When walking, put away electronic devices that take your eyes and ears off the road.

•Wear reflective materials or use a flashlight at night.

TxDOT’s “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” pedestrian safety campaign is a key component of #EndTheStreakTX, a broader social media and word-of-mouth effort that encourages drivers to make safer choices while behind the wheel to help end the streak of daily deaths. Nov. 7, 2000, was the last deathless day on Texas roadways.

The information contained in this report represents reportable data collected from the Texas Peace Officer’s Crash Report (CR-3). This information was received and processed by the department as of May 4, 2022. To view additional traffic safety data, visit TxDOT’s Traffic Safety Data Portal online.

Throughout the United States, in every community, we have first responders responding to every foreseeable crisis. Our firefighters, police officers, EMTs, doctors, and nurses receive the call and respond.

Oftentimes, our first responders respond to horrible incidents and in some situations, without them even knowing, it slowly erodes who they were before they took their oath of office.

According to the CDC in an April 6, 2021, report, law enforcement officers and firefighters are more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty. Furthermore, EMS providers are 1.3 times more likely to die by suicide than the public. Studies have found that between 17% and 24% of the public-safety telecommunications personnel have symptoms of post traumatic

stress disorder (PTSD), and 24% have symptoms of depression.

In addition, to suicide in these professionals’ lives, alcohol abuse, high rates of divorce, family violence, and the constant vacancy of positions are real issues taking this profession by storm.

With a sense of urgency and need, BT Church is sponsoring The First Annual First Responders Crisis Intervention. This event will feature church spiritual leaders covering the aforementioned topics.

Our First Responders event will take place October 15 from 9 a.m. to noon, and all first responders are welcome.

LOCATION: BT CHURCH, 4229 W. EXPRESSWAY 83, Suite 50, McAllen, Texas Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
