Wyatt Ranches, on behalf of The Wyatt Foundation, donated $15,000.00 to the Immaculate Conception School (ICS) in Rio Grande City, Starr County, Texas. The funds will be used to supplement budgetary shortfalls which occurred after ICS lost tuition funds when several students that generally would attend school there, instead opted to attend the tuition-free IDEA school. ICS is a private school that has been in existence since 1884 when
the vision of three Catholic woman became a reality. The Sisters of the Incarnate Word of San Antonio administered the school between 1884 and 1898. Eventually, the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament of Brownsville managed the school beginning in 1900. At this point, students from Mexico began to enroll and classes were given in both the English and Spanish language. 1920-1923 saw many changes in the small town of Rio Grande City
including the arrival of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and later, the Sisters of Mercy and classes were expanded to accommodate students in the upper grades. The 40’s, 50’s and 60’s reflected higher enrollment and lay teachers were hired to augment the faculty which up to that point generally consisted of Catholic sisters. In 1961, the enrollment was up to 405 students. The principles of the school embody the Seven Themes of ICS, page 2

Mud Dauber Wasps Seldom Sting All of us are frightened by wasps but we shouldn’t be afraid of mud dauber wasps since they almost never sting. They can sting but unless you aggressively handle them they won’t. One of the features you’ll notice is that they have a threadlike waist between the thorax and abdomen. About an inch long, they have, as expected of insects, six legs, a pair of antennae, two eyes and two pair of membranous wings. The pair of wings on each side are hooked together which is a characteristic of the insect order Hymenoptera to which they belong. There are three species you
may see. The first is the black and yellow mud dauber. As it’s name indicates, it’s body is black with prominent yellow spots. The females of this mud dauber species, without help from the males, build single cell nests, sometimes in clumps, provision each cell with a collection of paralyzed spiders, lay a single egg in each cell, seal each cell with a mud cap, and leave, not to return. Notice the word “paralyzed.” The spiders are stung but not killed so the wasp’s larvae, when hatched, will have live spiders to eat. A second mud dauber is called
an organ-pipe mud dauber. It’s an all black wasp and behaves like the black and yellow with two differences. The mud cells built are longer and arranged like the pipes of a panflute. Also different is the fact that the male helps to gather spiders and tends to stand guard over the cells to ward off predators. Our third mud wasp species is called a blue mud dauber. It’s wings and body are a metallic blue. Its behavior is significantly different. It doesn’t build it’s own mud cells but rehabilitates and uses the
abandoned cells of the other two species. Also of note, it has a preference for black widow spiders. Note that to have the beneficial effect of blue mud dauber wasps you also have to have some of the other mud daubers to build the original cells. The young wasps over-winter in the cells and emerge as adults in the spring. All three species are solitary, not colonial, and adults, surprisingly, don’t eat spiders but drink nectar from flowers. Here’s an interesting sidelight. Reports can be found which attribute several airplane crashes to the activity of mud daubers. It is thought that the wasps built mud
cells in the pitot tubes of planes and thus affected the air speed readings which contributed to the crashes. Ground crews were instructed to always check the pitot tubes before takeoff but sometimes didn’t. Some of you may be leery of wasps and rightly so, some wasps do sting, but the mud daubers are at worst minor nuisances and are, in fact, beneficial by preying on spiders including the black widow. Welcome them as a part of our fascinatingly diverse wildlife community.

Dear Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it, Dear Jesus, and place it within your own heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail.

2019 Ranchers Round-Up Scheduled As cow numbers rebound and calf prices begin to decline, producers will need to evaluate the profitability of various best management practices. Business people have known for many years, that planning is needed to guide management decisions. You wouldn’t drive to an unknown location without consulting a map. The same principle applies to ranching. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, Starr Soil & Water Conservation District, USDANRCS, USDA-FSA, Texas Parks & Wildlife, Prairie View
A&M Cooperative Extension Program and Texas Mexico Border Coalition will be having a Rancher’s Program on Thursday, October 24, 2019 at the San Isidro Parish Hall in San Isidro, Tx. The rancher’s program will feature demonstrations, information on range management, fever ticks and wildlife management, and free range laws and how they impact landowners. The program will begin at 8:00 a.m. and conclude at 1:30 p.m. with a noon meal sponsored by Rio Bank. The program is free of charge and will offer continuing
education units to those ranchers with a TDA private applicator license. There will also be many door prizes sponsored by Capital Farm Credit, Medina Electric and Texas Farm Bureau. The sponsors are very excited about this program and hope that you can join them on October 24th . Please call (956) 487-5598 ext. 3 to RSVP. The program is free of charge and is open to all area agriculture producers.
