Balde Garza announces candidacy for Judge of the 229th District Court
With over 31 years of experience as a lawyer, I Balde Garza, proudly announce my candidacy for Judge of the 229th District Court for Starr, Jim Hogg, and Duval Counties. I’m a husband, a father, a lawyer, a mediator, a former mayor, and a Rotarian. I have been married to Araceli B. Garza for over 32 years, and we have two grown sons, BJ, and Oscar. Araceli is a retired first grade teacher and taught for over 26 years at Ringgold Elementary in our hometown of Rio Grande City. We are members of First Baptist Church in Rio Grande City. I graduated from Rio Grande City High School as an all-state football player, and later received my Bachelor of Arts from Sul Ross State University where I played football for two years. I graduated from Thurgood Marshall School of Law in May of 1986 and was admitted to the State Bar of Texas in November of 1986. I have served my profession during my entire legal career. As a young lawyer, I served in various state wide committees with the Texas Young Lawyers Association (TYLA) and eventually was selected to serve on the TYLA board of directors. I served the TYLA as treasurer, vice president, and Chairman of the Board. As chairman, I presided on a board
with over 30 young lawyers elected from around the State of Texas. I have served in several state wide committees of the Texas State Bar and served on the board of directors of the State Bar College in which I continue to be a member. In addition, I’m also a sustaining life fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation. As a member of the Rotary Club of Rio Grande City for over 27 years, I have joined my fellow Rotarians in making a positive difference in our community, and I have been afforded the honor in the past to serve as president of our club. Rotary has supported many projects that have impacted our community especially young students including scholarships, leadership training, and assistance to the less fortunate among us. As a member of the Rotary Club, I participated in the election to create the City of Rio Grande City in 1993, and was a founding member of the city. I later served as an elected city Alderman for 2 years and as Mayor for 8 years. My mother, Berta, a young widow who had no schooling, without knowing anyone and no family here in the United States, immigrated into this country from the State of Michoacan, Mexico. After 7 years of work, sacrifice and many other obstacles, she married my father. My father died when I was three years old, and she raised
me by herself. She taught me how to work, in the fields, “en la labor.” As a boy, my mother and I worked in Washington in the asparagus and cherry, in Kansas in the sugar beet, and in Starr County in the cantaloupe and onion fields. She never said I needed to work hard, I always saw her example. She was so proud to live in the United States and loved our country so much, that she became a US Citizen. She taught me to respect my teachers, anyone I met, and to always help others in need. She and I, never forgot those who helped us. She was grateful to my high school football
coach, Oscar Perez, for taking me to Alpine to see the college. She admired Ruben Saenz, my high school principal, and RC Salinas, my junior high school principal, because they treated her with respect not as a field worker. They saw her as a hard worker who knew the importance of respect, helping others in need, and because they saw a person with strong work ethics and strong values. I’m proud to have been born in La Puerta Ranch and raised in El Brazil Ranch just north of Rio Grande City. El Brazil Ranch is where my father, Adan and his
father, Jacinto lived and worked their entire life. This is where we live, and it is my favorite place in the world. This is where I will be buried when the Lord calls me. I have a passion to serve my profession as a lawyer and our community. I will bring the same work ethic that I learned from my mother. I will work hard, and I will give you my best. I humbly ask for your vote, and support for Judge of the 229th District Court. God Bless.
