October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN
“A Day of Remembrance” Candlelight Vigil was held on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at Roma I.S.D. Performing Arts Center to remember the victims who have lost their lives due to domestic violence and to identify victims who need assistance in prevention of domestic violence. Eighteen silhouettes are presented to symbolize the Eighteen individuals who have lost their lives to domestic violence. A nineteenth silhouette is symbolic of all the unknown individuals who have lost their lives to domestic violence, but for other reasons have not been recognized as victims of domestic violence. Victor Canales, Jr., Starr County Attorney (who’s office sponsors the event) welcomed those in attendance. He was followed by Deacon RC Salinas who led the group in a prayer for all the current and past victims. After the symbolic lighting of the candles which was concurrent with a slide show presentation of 18 victims of domestic violence that occurred in Starr County, 229th Judicial District Attorney Omar Escobar closed the evening with remarks. Misa de Quinto Aniversario En Memoria de
Hortencia Barrera 08-23-1921 † 10-29-2014
Nos has dejado recuerdos hermosos. Tu amor sigue siendo nuestra guía y aunque no podemos verte siempre estás a nuestro lado. Nuestra cadena familiar se rompió y nada parece lo mismo, pero cuando Dios nos llame uno a uno, la cadena se unirá de nuevo.

drugs at nearly 6,300 sites operated by the DEA and almost 5,000 of its state and local law enforcement partners. Overall, in its 17 previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners have taken in more than 11.8 million pounds—approximately 5,900 tons—of pills. This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the United States are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows year after year that the majority of misused
and abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including someone else’s medication being stolen from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards. Delia G. Garcia Elementary School Launches AR Program
The students and staff of Delia G. Garcia Elementary School at Roma ISD had a wonderful time at their AR Kick Off Rally. The theme for this year is “Reading Is Out of this World”. The students will enjoy reading many books that will take them on great adventures. Great job Warriors!
The Mexican White-lipped Frog is seldom seen I keep a large plastic basin of water next to my door. It’s there for the birds and other thirsty animals. At dusk, the last several evenings, I’ve seen a frog enjoying the water. Taking a
careful look, I discovered it was a Mexican white-lipped frog. These frogs are found from near the Rio Grande in deep south Texas down into Columbia and Venezuela. Scarce and nocturnal they’re seldom seen. Because their range extends only a few miles into Texas and their
population is not large, Texas Parks and Wildlife lists them as threatened here and they’re a protected species. Further destruction of natural habitats will certainly reduce their numbers. If you see one, here’s how to identify it. It’s a frog up to 2 inches long and colored gray-brown with dark blotches. The distinguishing feature is that its upper lip is white. Above that, in front of the eye there’s usually a dark line. The head is somewhat pointed. Also distinguishing it from most other frogs, it’s feet are not webbed. They inhabit moist areas like drainage ditches, swamps, ponds and irrigated fields. I was surprised to see one after our extremely hot and dry summer. Being amphibians they have moist skin and begin life as aquatic tadpoles. The males mating call is a pitch rising “pu-uh, pu-uh, pu-uh.” He calls even when sometimes hidden under rocks or in shallow burrows. The female lays her eggs in a bubbly froth which may help them through brief dry spells. White-lipped frogs are active at night and eat insects, which is to our benefit. They burrow into moist earth to spend the day.
