Starr County

U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) announced a $10,256,381 grant for the Rio Water Supply Corporation to improve Rio Grande City’s water supply and treatment. The grant was awarded through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and will be used to construct a raw water intake,

water reservoir, surface water treatment plant, and elevated tank for colonias between Rio Grande City and Roma.

The project will help ensure access to clean drinking water and adequate water pressure for more than 2,000 residents of colonias in Starr County Precinct 1, between Roma and Rio Grande

City. These colonias include Benjamin Perez, Flor del Rio, and La Esperanza.

“This historic grant funding will ensure that the residents of rural areas in Starr County have the quality water services they deserve,” said Congressman Cuellar. “It is essential that we REP. CUELLAR, page 10

Rio Grande City High School CTE instructor Mrs. Ivy Lim is thrilled to announce that all of her 23 students have officially completed the requirements to join the workforce and post-secondary education be it their choice. This program has been in existence at RGCGISD for over 15 years and has expanded with over six classes and certifications and is held at all three high schools. Congratulations to all!

Roma Middle School Students Thrilled with Sonic Drive in Funding of Class Project

Mrs. Anakaren Lopez, a 7th grade RLA teacher from Roma Middle School, is excited to announce that her Donors Choose Project “Smart Hub Tub” was fully funded by Sonic Drive-In!

The technology smart tubs will allow students to charge their electronic device for education in case it runs out of battery during class time. These tubs will eliminate the possibility of students tripping and falling because of charging cables being all over the classroom floor. Not only that, because students are using their Chromebooks on a daily basis for classroom learning, having the tech tubs is essential for the students to be ready for the day! PUCT Adopts Rule Prohibiting Disconnection of Water Service During Extreme Cold Weather Emergency

New Rules Apply to nonMunicipal Public Water and Sewer Utilities

The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) today adopted rules prohibiting non-municipal public water and sewer utilities from disconnecting customers during extreme cold weather emergencies. The new rules mean those utilities cannot disconnect service or issue late fees for nonpayment of bills due during such emergencies, including for bills previously due.

As cattle feed prices increase and calf prices begin to decline, producers will need to evaluate the profitability of various best management practices. The same principle applies to ranching.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, Starr Soil & Water Conservation District, USDA-NRCS, USDAFSA, Texas Parks & Wildlife, Prairie View A&M Cooperative Extension Program and Texas Mexico Border Coalition will be having a Rancher’s Program on Thursday, November 03, 2022 at the San Isidro Parish Hall in San Isidro, Tx. The rancher’s

program will feature information on wildlife management, heirs property, whole farm planning, USDA Farm/Ranch programs and range and brush management using drone technology. The program will begin at 8:00 a.m. and conclude at 1:00 p.m. with a noon meal sponsored by Valley Telephone Cooperative. The program is free of charge. There will also be many door prizes sponsored by Capital Farm Credit, and Texas Farm Bureau.

Pumpkin Decorating Contest

Rio Grande City Public Library will be hosting a Pumpkin Decorating Contest at the RGC Trunk of Treat on Wednesday, October 26 at the Basilio Villarreal Park.

The No-Carve Pumpkin Contest from 6 – 9 pm at the Basilio Villarreal Park. All entries must be received by 6:00pm the day on Oct. 26. Winners will be announced at 7:30pm.

The Rules:

1. To decorate you can use paper, glue, paint, markers, pipe cleaners, fabric, or any other craft items on the pumpkin. Let your creativity soar!

2. Pumpkins may not be carved or hollowed out.

3. Do not write your name anywhere on the pumpkin.

Pumpkins will be judged for these categories Scariest, Funniest and Most Creative.

Roma High School Student Art on Display at South Texas College Starr County Campus Library

South Texas College hosted a reception to honor the Roma High School students who have art currently on display at the college’s Starr County Campus Library. The show features students who were state finalists and medalists in the VASE State Art Competition.

“These are some amazingly talented students,” said Roma ISD Superintendent Carlos M. Gonzalez Jr. “The art work I’m seeing here is part of a very long tradition of excellence in visual arts at Roma ISD. I am so thankful

for the excellent teachers we have on staff at our middle schools and at our high school that are working with these students to help their talents mature. Thank you to South Texas College for highlighting the students, and

encouraging them to pursue their talents in the future!”
