The Housing Authority of Starr County will no longer be taking applications for Housing Assistance for the Low Rent and Section 8 Programs. The waiting list will be closed EFFECTIVE November 7, 2024. The waiting list will remain closed until further notice.

Property Tax Cycle (Basic information below)
• Appraisal Phase (January 1st to MY 15TH property renditions, appraising property, applying limitation on residential
value, applying for exemptions, applying tax ceiling, agricultural appraisals.
• Equalization Phase (May 15th to July 25th): receiving protests on appraised values, issuing hearing notifications, protest considerations, limited binding arbitration for certain procedures, and appeals to ARB Orders.
• Assessment Phase (July 25th to October 1st): calculation and determination of tax rates, calculation of taxes due, issuing tax notices.

• Collection Phase (October 1st to January 31st): collection of taxes due and distribution of tax payments to entities, action on failure to pay taxes.
The information outlined above is a basic overview of what is required by each county appraisal district in Texas, in addition to all other requirements set out under the Texas Property Tax Code. Congratulations to the Roma High School Choir Program students who competed and earned chairs at the TMEA Treble Choir Contest! Daisy Bazan earned 2nd Chair, Sophia Garza earned 3rd Chair, and Alexa Barrera earned 6th Chair. These students now participate in the TMEA Treble Choir All-District Clinic and Concert on November 23 in McAllen. Rio Grande City Celebrates Opening of New Public Safety Building
Rio Grande City held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday morning to mark the opening of its new Public Safety Building, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to improving emergency response and community safety.
Located on FM 755, the facility will serve as the new home for both the city’s re and police departments. It is designed to host meetings on emergency situations, provide space for critical training, and function as a shelter during times of crisis.
City o cials, rst responders, and community members gathered at the ceremony to celebrate the
building’s completion and the role it will play in enhancing public safety.
“ is building represents Rio Grande City’s commitment to keeping our community safe,” said Mayor Gilberto Falcon. “With this facility, our rst responders are better equipped to serve, train, and respond to emergencies, and it provides us with a safe place for residents in times of need.”
Police Chief Noe Castillo highlighted the impact of the building on law enforcement e orts, saying, “ is facility gives us the tools and space to work more e ectively and come together with other departments. It’s a signi cant step forward in our
mission to protect and serve Rio Grande City.”
Fire Chief Manuel Muniz also expressed enthusiasm, noting the bene ts for the re department. “Having a centralized facility like this improves our coordination and gives us a space to conduct crucial training exercises,” Muniz said. “It’s a true asset for the community and for the re ghters who dedicate themselves to keeping it safe.” e new Public Safety Building is expected to streamline response times and foster closer collaboration between the re and police departments, as well as improve preparedness for natural disasters and other emergencies.
