The Rio Grande City Rattlers came out victorious at the Starr County Super Bowl against the Roma Gladiators on Thursday, September 28, with a final score of 17-14. The nail-biting game could have gone either way. The Gladiators capitalized on critical plays early in the game, giving them the momentum entering the second half. However, the Rattler defense held their ground and gave every opportunity for the offense to take control. Fans on both sides, cheered passionately for their teams uncertain of who would be crowned the Champions of Starr County. The final quarter showed the Gladiators and the rest of the District 31-5A that the Rattlers are a team that will not go down without a fight. The Rattlers are now 3-0 in district and are preparing for their next game in Laredo against Laredo Cigarroa on Friday.

3rd Annual Psych Science Majors Orientation General Ricardo Sanchez Elementary Receives Sorority Donation
The 3rd Annual Starr County Campus Psychological Science Majors Orientation took place at the auditorium in RGC. The purpose of the orientation was to provide more information about the field of psychology to those students who attended. Mr. Alex Sarabia (STC Psychological Science Faculty) served as Master of Ceremonies and introduced Ms. Rose Benavidez (STC Board Member & Starr County Industrial Foundation President) for Opening Remarks. Dr. Janene Israel (STC Psychological Science Department Program Chair & Faculty)
elaborated on “Great Expectations for Psychological Science Majors.” Mr. Alex Sarabia talked about the Associate of Arts in Psychological Science Degree Plan, including “Math Course Options for Psychological Science Majors” (TSI & Non-TSI complete), since Algebra is not their only option and many students aren’t aware of that. Mr. Eli Sarabia (STC Psychological Science Faculty) then provided an overview of the different psychological science courses offered at STC and which semesters the psych courses are offered at Starr County Campus.
The students also learned about the careers in psychology, including the detailed requirements in becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)—explained by Mr. Eli and Alex Sarabia respectively—who also provided information on scholarships and college resources. Attendees also learned about the benefits of joining the Starr County Campus Psychology Club, with Vice-Presidents Raul Rivas and Victoria Benavidez addressing those benefits. There were also some door prizes (STC goodie bags with supplies). Over 150 students were in attendance.
Principal Adela Rivera and Counselor Judy Ramirez were proud to receive a donation check from Texas Delta Theta Master of Beta sigma Phi sorority. They are pictured with a class of third graders who were enjoying a lesson in the library. The donation is to be used to help provide uniform shirts for students at General Ricardo Sanchez Elementary of the RGCCISD. Presenting the check are Rosie Garcia and Tissa Peterson, chairman and member respectively, of the group’s service committee.

He Only Takes The Best God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be. So He put his arms around you and whispered, ‘Come with Me.’ With tearful eyes we watched you slowly fade away, although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us... He only takes the best.

FAFSA registration begins Oct. 1 Students at South Texas College may begin applying for their Federal Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on Oct. 1. For those who want to file as early as possible, students are urged to go online to https://fafsa. ed.gov/ to get started on their free application. Current and continuing students are reminded that they must reapply every year for financial aid. “There is no reason to wait, the FAFSA now requires income information from two years prior. So, students and parents should have already filed their 2016 income tax returns by now. We encourage students to submit the FAFSA now and avoid the lines,” said Juan Miguel Galvan, STC Director of Student Financial Services. “Students can come to any campus with the required documents and we have knowledgeable staff available to guide them through the FAFSA process. “We would like to send this message to all high school seniors, returning and continuing college students to apply now and have a peace of mind that their funds will be available when they begin registering for classes in fall 2018.” Galvan said. STC will also hold a free event in November to assist students

NOVENA “Miraculous Prayer” Dear Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it, Dear Jesus, and place it within your own heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail.

Now is the time to get your flu shot
Texas Influenza Awareness Day is Oct. 1 As flu season approaches, the Texas Department of State Health Services encourages everyone 6 months old and older to get vaccinated now to protect themselves from getting the flu. “The flu vaccine causes your body to make antibodies to fight influenza, but it takes about two weeks for this to happen. So, it’s important to get the flu vaccine early, before influenza hits your community,” said Dr. Jennifer Shuford, DSHS Infectious Disease Medical Officer. “By getting the flu vaccine every year, you can help protect yourself from influenza, and thereby prevent spreading it to vulnerable people in your family or community.” It is especially important for people with chronic health conditions, pregnant women, young children, older adults, and the people who live with them to get vaccinated in order to minimize the risk of developing serious complications from the flu. Family members and others around babies should get vaccinated to protect the babies and themselves since infants under 6 months of age cannot get vaccinated. Influenza is an illness caused by one of a number of related viruses. Symptoms usually start suddenly and include fever, body aches, chills, a dry cough, sore throat, runny nose, headaches and extreme fatigue and can last a week or longer. It is important to note that not all flu sufferers will have a fever. People can help stop the spread of illness and reduce their chance of catching the flu by getting vaccinated, washing hands frequently, covering coughs and sneezes and staying home if they’re sick. Additional flu information and tips are at TexasFlu.org. FLU, page 6

Ringgold Elementary School beetles live most of their lives underground Received School Supplies Stag A few sets of wings. The front or days ago we observed a large, black beetle crawling about in the leaf litter. It was what we call a stag beetle. There are many species of stag beetles; this one, after a bit of research, was found to be a Stenodontes chevrolati. I don’t know if there’s a common name other than just “stag beetle.” They lead rather different and surprising lives.
outer pair is thick and hard for protection. The second or inner set is membranous and folded under the outer pair except when extended and used to fly. Being insects, they have 6 legs and three body parts: head, thorax and abdomen. They have a pair of long antennae, about 1 inch, and a pair of jaw projections called mandibles. The males have large mandibles to do battle with rivals. The females have rather short mandibles. The beetle we observed had short mandibles and, so, was a female. It’s a stag beetle’s life cycle that I found so interesting. The female Ringgold Elementary extends their appreciation to Rio Grande City Pizza Hut employees for visiting our digs about a foot into the ground Raider family. During their last fall season as larvae, they enter the pupal stage during which they are transformed into adult beetles. Interestingly, as newly formed adults, they don’t then crawl to the surface but spend the winter resting underground. It’s in the spring that they emerge above ground to live life as adults. Adults have only one function: reproduction. The adults we may see live only 2 or 3 months during which it’s all about mating. They don’t eat but use the fat stored as a larva for energy. They may sip a bit of fruit juice, sap or water. Stag beetles are considered beneficial because as larvae they help decompose rotting wood which recycles nutrients. They might pinch but, otherwise, are harmless. You might enjoy seeing one.

IDEA Public Schools Receives A $67 Million Grant to Support Growth and Expansion The US Department of Education announced that it is awarding IDEA Public Schools a $67 million grant to support growth and expansion under its Charter Schools Program (CSP), which funds the creation and expansion of public charter schools across the nation. IDEA Public Schools—a threetime grantee under this program, a 2015 Bright Spot in Hispanic Education, and the recipient of the 2016 Broad Prize for Public Charter Schools—will use the award to support the creation of 46 schools which includes 20 expansion schools in Austin, the Rio Grande Valley, and San Antonio the opening of IDEA Tarrant County. In total, the grant will help IDEA Public Schools expand to serve nearly 30,000 additional students. “Closing the achievement gap means educating as many students to and through college as possible,” said Tom Torkelson, IDEA’s CEO and Founder. At“ IDEA, we are committed to preparing our students for college and life. We are grateful for the support of the U.S. Department of Education’s Charter Schools Program that will help us achieve our goal of educating 100,000 students by 2022.” By 2022, IDEA will operate 173 schools in ten regions educating 100,000 students on their road to and through college. IDEA Public Schools is expanding to Southern Louisiana and El Paso, Texas in 2018 and Tarrant County (Fort Worth/Arlington),
Texas in 2019. In the exploration of new regions for IDEA Public Schools, no communities made larger impressions than Southern Louisiana and Tarrant County and El Paso, Texas. In all three communities, the achievement gap is starkly present - thousands of students are in need of a highquality education and families want more quality educational options for their children. “We are extremely grateful for the grant IDEA was awarded and are excited about the additional opportunities these funds will provide for students across the communities we serve,” said Lindsey Schaefer, the Vice President of National Advancement at IDEA Public Schools. “The Department of Education is committed to supporting college matriculation and the continued growth of excellent public schools like IDEA that are closing equity gaps and improving student outcomes.” The Department of Education provides funds to charter management organizations (CMOs) on a competitive basis to enable them to replicate or expand one or more high-quality charter schools. The goals of the grant include achieving college-ready student results, building a strong and sustainable organization, and achieving IDEA’s mission of College For All at scale. To learn more about IDEA Public Schools, contact Kisella Cardenas at 956-998-9120 or Kisella. Cardenas@ideapublicschools.org
Largest Traveling Dinosaur Museum Exhibit Coming to PalmFest 2017 From a 150 dinosaur bone collection, to live snakes and raptors, to a coastal studies touch tank and a new exhibit of robots, Palmfest’s “Into the Wild” program this year is destined to be an exciting and fun-filled educational family day out! Activities have been specifically aligned to state TEKS. “It’s like going on four different field trips all on one day!” said one teacher last year, regarding the diverse opportunities for children to experience handson STEAM learning. This kind of “STEAM” isn’t the powerful water vapor that propelled engines of the past, but rather a powerful set of educational goals that can propel a student into a successful future: S= science, T = technology, E= engineering, A=arts, and M=math. More than 20 organizations will be offering Science learning opportunities at Palmfest. Danny Connor’s Reptiles, The Texas Zoo, the UTRGV Coastal Studies Lab, Sea Turtle Inc, and Sky King Falconry are just a few organizations bringing in live native creatures. Naturalists from the World Birding Centers, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and the US Fish and Wildlife will have an array of creature models on display, along with furs, tracks, bones and other features for hands-on, up close science investigation. For Technology and Engineering, visitors won’t want to miss the exciting new Robotics display. Thanks to STC, Sylvan Learning, and other local engineering entities, children and
adults can not only practice moving robots, but also learn how to code their movements. Others may wish to explore the engineering displays of the Hidalgo Pumphouse or the KMB and McAllen Recycling Center. Art displays can be found in every area of Into the Wild, including the “500 Wild-Bird Art” exhibition on the walls of Room 103, Room 102 and the main hall. Room 101 will have a photographic display of the heritage of our city, and The McAllen Public Library will have an art project to take home.
And you will definitely want to dive into the Math at the McAllen Public Utilities booth where rainfall patterns and water conservation issues are more easily understood with the city’s newest large-scale Google Earth topographical map model of the LRGV. Gather the family and head into the wild this year….full STEAM ahead! “Into the Wild” at Palmfest is on October 7 & 8 inside the McAllen Convention Center, from Noon-7 pm. Adults: $5; Children under 12 free.
