Prayer in time of Bereavement

Lord, you are close to the broken hearted Be with me now in my grief and loneliness. Give me courage to face loss and not to grieve in silence Be with me as I struggle with many different and painful feelings. Ease the hurt in my heart. Encircle me in your love. Help me to believe that one day I will no longer have this deep sorrow. May I find comfort in sharing my grief with those who understand the strong bonds of love. Stay with me Lord, support me. Help me to know that your power is at work within me as I deal with my grief. Composed by Sr. Sheila McAuliffe RSCJ

1st Anniversary Masses will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church Wednesday Oct. 9 at 6PM and Sunday Oct. 13 at 11AM

NOVENA “Miraculous Prayer”

R. G. C.

Dear Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it, Dear Jesus, and place it within your own heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail.

enforcement who are working tirelessly to keep our border communities safe. Since 2008, I have secured $17.2 million in OPSG funds for Starr County. As the Vice Chair of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Appropriations, I will continue to ensure the men and women of law enforcement have the necessary funding to keep our South Texas communities safe and secure. I want to thank Starr County Sheriff Rene Fuentes, Starr County Judge Eloy Vera, the Starr County Commissioners Court, as well as all local, state, and federal officers for their commitment to helping to secure our southern border.” Starr County Sheriff Rene Fuentes said, “I thank Congressman Henry Cuellar and the federal government for providing Starr County with these funds and allowing us to enhance our community’s security. These dollars go a long way in our mission of keeping our community safe. We will use these funds to strengthen our existing structure and identify new practices to continue to make Starr County one of the safest Counties in all of Texas.”

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

evolved from the “Day of Unity” held in October 1981 and conceived by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The “Day of Unity” soon evolved into a week, and in October of 1987, the first National Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed. In 1989 Congress passed Public Law 101-112, officially designating October of that year as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Such legislation has been passed each year since.

October Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The National Breast Cancer Foundation reports that a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every two minutes. Innovations in research, surgical options and clinical trials give women many more options. With early detection, a woman’s survival rate goes up. That’s why breast self exams are an important way for women to give their “girls” a fighting chance. Fast Facts About Breast Cancer •Each year in the United States, more than 245,000 women get breast cancer and more than 40,000 women die from the disease. •Men also get breast cancer, but it is not very common. Less than 1% of breast cancers occur in men. •Most breast cancers are found in women who are 50 years old or older, but breast cancer also affects younger women. About 10% of all new cases of breast cancer in the United States are found in women younger than 45 years of age.

DSHS encourages Texans to get vaccinated now as flu season begins

The Texas Department of State Health Services recommends that everyone 6 months old and older get vaccinated now to prevent flu and its potentially serious complications. “It takes about two weeks for immunity to develop after getting the flu vaccine. So, we are asking all Texans 6 months of age and older to get their flu vaccines before the end of October,” said Dr. Jennifer Shuford, DSHS Infectious Disease Medical Officer. Getting vaccinated is especially important for people with chronic health conditions, pregnant women, young children and older adults because they are at higher risk of developing serious complications from the flu. Caregivers should get the flu shot to protect themselves and to prevent spreading the flu to the vulnerable people they care for in their families and communities. Influenza is an illness caused by one of a number of related viruses. Symptoms usually start suddenly and include fever, body aches, chills, a dry cough, sore throat, runny nose, headaches and extreme fatigue and can last a week or longer. It is important to note that not all flu sufferers will have a fever. People can help stop the spread of illness and reduce their chance of catching the flu by getting vaccinated, washing hands frequently, covering coughs and sneezes and staying home if they’re sick. Additional flu information and tips are at TexasFlu.org. All flu vaccines this season are made to protect against viruses similar to the strains A/ Brisbane/02/2018 (H1N1), A/ Kansas/14/2017 (H3N2) and B/ Colorado/06/2017 (B/Victoria lineage). Some vaccines include an additional vaccine virus strain, B/Phuket/3073/2013 (B/ Yamagata lineage). The influenza A components of the vaccine were updated this year to better match the flu viruses expected to be circulating this season. People can contact their health care provider, local health department, local pharmacy or use the Vaccine Finder at TexasFlu.org to find out where flu shots are available. Health officials encourage people to seek treatment quickly if they are experiencing flu symptoms. Antiviral drugs may help shorten the duration or lessen the severity of the flu if started within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms.

Wild things in the city --- part 2 (This is the second of a series of articles with suggestions about how to bring a bit of “experiencing nature” into the city.) In the first of this series, I suggested attracting butterflies. I’d now like to suggest attracting birds. There are some big problems associated with attracting birds, especially in urban areas. I live at Rancho Lomitas located in the thorn-scrub and we don’t have house sparrows, starlings, rock doves or grackles. Those who feed birds in the city may be inundated by them. Most people are fond of hummingbirds, orioles and woodpeckers, as long as they don’t peck on your h o u s e . Fortunately, r u b y throated, b l a c k chinned and buff-bellied hummingbirds, and the Audubon’s, altamira, hooded, and bullock’s orioles, and the golden fronted woodpecker are all native here in the Valley and all love to drink from nectar feeders. None of the pest birds do. The reason is that the desired birds have a

sucrase enzyme which allows them to digest sugar. So, you can do some pest free birding by putting up nectar feeders. There are oodles of nectar feeders available and I’ve tried many of them. Let me suggest two. For hummingbirds: the Pinch Waist Red Glass Hummingbird Feeder. For orioles: the Deluxe Oriole Feeder. Both are sold by Duncraft Wild Bird Superstore as #203CPBR and #38126 and can be purchased on-line or by phone at 888-879-5095. I suggest these specific two because (1) the birds readily use them, (2) they don’t leak as many such feeders do, (3) because they have bee guards which keep bees from crawling in and drowning, (4) both have a raised rim at the top to allow a water moat to prevent ants from entering and (5) they’re made partly of sturdy glass. These feeders are not the cheapest but you generally get the quality you pay for. I should mention that the Tractor Supply Company on Hwy 83 west of Rio Grande City sells bags of colored, granular nectar mix if you don’t care to make your own. If you do, mix about 1 part sugar to about 5 or 6 parts water.

In addition to providing nectar, you may also try orange halves and marshmallows. I don’t know whether they’ll attract pests but they’re worth a try. I feed jumbo marshmallows placed in wire suet feeders to make the birds eat them at my feeding station and not carry them off.

Of course, ground level and pedestal bird baths are a must. You can also provide a variety of seeds but that will surely attract pest birds and perhaps rodents so I’d be very reluctant to do so in an urban area. I hope you enjoy nature and bring some of it to your city.
