With a collection of custom-designed, oversized blue foam parts, Imagination PlaygroundTM provides a changing array of elements that allow kids to create a playspace that is constantly built and re-built by their imagination. “Roma ISD is very grateful to Kaboom and BlueCross and BlueShield of Texas for

selecting our district to receive this unique playground for our students,” expressed Roma ISD Superintendent Carlos Guzman. “Because it is an indoor playground experience that requires students to use their imagination, we know it will greatly benefit our students’ intellectual growth. IBC Bank Donates $500 to Roma ISD Football Program

In Loving Memory

Mario A. Gutierrez December 5, 1972 † August 21, 2018

NOVENA “Miraculous Prayer” Dear Sacred Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it, Dear Jesus, and place it within your own heart, where your Father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail.

R. G. C.

The Broken Chain We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone for part of us went with you, the day that God called you home. You left us beautiful memories, your love is still our guide, and though we cannot see you, you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same; but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.

The Velasquez, Barba, and Gutierrez family would like to say thank you to everyone that attended the funeral of Mario Gutierrez. He will be missed by many, and the presence of everybody that attended the funeral showed just how much he will be missed. The love and support from everyone will help us get through this rough time.

Roma ISD would like to sincerely thank IBC Bank of Zapata for their recent donation of $500 to support the Roma ISD Football Program. The donation was made at the start of the Roma VS. RGC Starr County Super Bowl Game. “We all know every Friday Night is a huge gathering for most Texas communities, especially in Starr County when our schools meet on the football field,” expressed Javier A Ramirez, bank officer. “IBC Zapata wanted to take the Bowl Game as an opportunity to continue to show our commitment to the communities we serve by donating $1000 to benefit area schools - $500 to the Roma Football Program and $500 to the Rio Grande Football Program.” Representatives from IBC presented the checks to the Varsity Team Head Coaches for both school districts. “We really appreciate IBC for their donation to our Football Program,” said Roma ISD School Board President Raul P. Moreno Jr. “IBC can rest assured that their donation serves to advance both the academic and athletic excellence Roma ISD strives to achieve.”

We want to express our heartfelt thanks to the voters and our supporters for their vote of confidence in our respective candidacies for the 229th Judicial District Court Judge and Starr County Judge. We feel honored and humbled that you have chosen to place your trust in us. After the March election, our opponents Martie Garcia Vela and Leticia Garza Galvan requested a recount which didn’t change the outcome of the election results. Our opponents then iled an election contest lawsuit seeking to have the election results thrown out and declaring them as the winners or providing for a new election. On May 2, 2018 and after a 5 day trial, the Honorable Judge Joel B. Johnson issued a judgment stating that the results of the inal canvass of the primary election declared us the winners and Democratic nominees for the 229th Judicial District Court Judgeship and Starr County Judgeship, respectively, and denied our opponents’ request for a new election. Our opponents appealed.

On August 29, 2018, the Fourth Court of Appeals afirmed the judgment by Judge Johnson and like Judge Johnson found that there was insuficient evidence to support Ms. Garcia Vela and Ms. Garza Galvan’s claims. There can be no further appeal. It has been a trying time for our family and friends and especially for us as we waited for a inal resolution. The voters and now the courts have spoken. We look forward to serving our community in our respective capacities, and once again thank you for the opportunity to serve.

How to encourage kids to take care of their teeth

Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene. Parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care. ·Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a soft-bristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday. · Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. ·Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. ·Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.

Rio Grande City’s First High School 1932

SEPTEMBER 12, 2018 SECTION II, PAGE 1

You’re in good hands.

Post card photo of Rio Grande City’s first and original High School 1932. It had a beautiful auditorium, mahogany wood large doors, real black boards, a tower on top of the nurses office, a boiler room/basement and the principal’s office was covered in all oak wood but commanded discipline as one walked in or reported in for the wrong reasons. In 1948, the students moved to Fort Ringgold where the once functional barracks had been transformed into classrooms. The old high was then converted into an elementary school and was known as West Grammar Grade School. There were only two other grammar schools near by at the time which were: North Grammar School and Ringgold Primary School at Fort Ringgold. In the mid 1970’s West Grammar School was renamed into “Roque Guerra Elementary School” named after the high school’s first and longest serving high school band director. (/COL Ross Barrera)

A Hog Potato Is Edible Here’s a rather unusual native plant for us to examine: the hog potato. It’s also called Indian rushpea and pig nut. Its interesting scientific name has three double letters: Hoffmannseggia glauca (hawfman-SEG-ee-a GLAW-ka). Its Spanish name Camote de Raton means sweet potato. Originating in California, it’s now found throughout our southwestern states and into Mexico. I first noticed a few of the plants while hiking about Rancho Lomitas a few years ago. A perennial, it grows well here,

because it prefers alkaline soils, and spreads by rhizomes to make small colonies. W h a t caught my attention was its attractive leaves. They’re doubly pinnately compound. That is, there are pairs of ribs along the leaf midrib each of which has pairs of tiny leaflets. That’s unusual and attractive. They’re also glaucous, a green color with a tinge of blue and gray. The color is quite distinctive among all the usual greenery. What gives the hog potato it’s name is the growth of tubers on its roots. The growths, like little

potatoes, can be 12 to 15 inches underground and are edible. I don’t know how they might be prepared for eating, probably by boiling or roasting. The indigenous Americans ate them. The flowers which bloom intermittently from March through September are yellow with red-orange highlights. Each flower has a rather open arrangement of petals and is bilaterally symmetrical.

Typical plants I’ve observed in the wild were only 5 or 6 inches tall but several which I transplanted into pots and watered regularly have grown to about a foot tall and are thriving. The blooms are nice but the

feathery bluish gray-green foliage is the real attraction. Some day, when I’m feeling adventurous, I may dig a hog potato and taste it. New experiences always await us in our natural environment.
