Child Care Workers: Get Vaccinated to Share Good Health Children are notorious germspreaders, and sharing those germs is easy in child care settings. Keeping kids healthy there requires the cooperation of parents and the people who care for their children. Like washing hands and disinfecting toys, vaccinations are an important piece of that puzzle, say Texas physicians. “One of the most important things we can do is create safe environments for our children, whether we’re at home, school, or day care,” said Ryan Van Ramshorst, MD, a San Antonio pediatrician and member of Texas Medical Association’s (TMA’s) Committee on Child and Adolescent Health. “Making sure our kids and the people we trust to care for them are appropriately vaccinated is a key part of this.” Children’s activities tend to spread germs. They share toys, hold hands, and stay in close contact with each other and their caregivers. Kids are less likely to practice healthy hygiene habits, such as hand washing and covering a cough, so the risk of illness goes up for kids and the child care workers. In addition to sharing a cold or stomach virus, children and their caregivers can spread much more
serious diseases like whooping cough (pertussis), mumps, and flu (influenza) in child care settings. Each year, flu sends some 20,000 kids under age 5 to the hospital, the most hospitalizations for any vaccine-preventable disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. An annual flu vaccine is recommended for anyone 6 months and older. Properly vaccinated child care workers can help stop the accidental spread of disease among the little ones in their care, doctors advise. Recommendations for the upcoming flu season are becoming available, and pediatric organizations are expected to recommend all child care workers get a flu vaccine this fall. “Ensuring child care workers are up to date with vaccinations protects children from potentially deadly diseases we can prevent with a vaccine,” said Dr. Van Ramshorst, a member of TMA’s Be Wise — Immunize Physician Advisory Panel. “And they protect the child care workers from catching something from the kids.” Physicians and other health experts recommend several vaccinations for all adults, and especially for those who care for
children: • Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) protects against pertussis, or whopping cough, that is especially serious for infants who are too young to be vaccinated. Vaccinating the adults around them is the best way to protect the little ones. Adults need one Tdap shot, and pregnant women need one during each pregnancy. •Varicella (chickenpox): Adults who never had the disease or who didn’t get the vaccine need two doses. •MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella): If not fully vaccinated as a child, adults need this vaccine. •Flu: An annual vaccine is needed for anyone 6 months of age and older. “Talk to your doctor if you’re not sure whether you’ve had all the shots you need as an adult,” said Dr. Van Ramshorst. “That’s an easy way to ensure your health and the kids you care for.” Most insurance plans pay for vaccinations at no cost to you. The Adult Safety Net (ASN) Program provides low-cost vaccines to people 19 years of age and older who do not have health insurance. TMA has published an infographic on child care worker vaccinations in English and Spanish.

Hurricane Harvey is no match for Texas grit By Russell Boening, Texas Farm Bureau President A challenge brings out the best in us, but a horrific natural disaster shows everyone just how strong they truly are. And here in the Lone Star State, we made a new category— Texas Strong. The heart, resilience and spirit of Texas, and of our farmers and ranchers, is second to none. We showed the world what makes Texas so great—our grit and our people. When Hurricane Harvey struck the Texas Gulf Coast last month, it was disastrous and downright devastating. Tragic images flooded social media and news reports. Damages piled up. Families lost everything. Agriculture struggled to stay afloat.
But another story emerged. One of selflessness. The world watched as Texans took care of Texans. It happened in the cities and suburbs. It happened in the small towns and communities that call Southeast Texas home. It happened in agriculture. Strangers became friends. Neighbors became family, and miles didn’t matter. Farmers and ranchers from across the state and country sent aid to the Gulf Coast communities. Livestock feed, truckloads of hay, pet food and toiletries came pouring in. Some drove a few miles with supplies. Others drove 500 or more, and still others crossed state lines to help. Boats, helicopters, horses and people on foot moved stranded
cattle to higher ground. They helped each other evacuate. And they moved from one farm to the next, lending a hand, a tractor or a boat. The willingness to help isn’t new. We saw it after the wildfires roared through the Texas Panhandle earlier this year. It’s because agriculture has a bond. We’re all connected— doing what’s best for our crops and livestock, no matter the challenge. Now, nearly two weeks after the storm made landfall, Texas farmers and ranchers are still sorting through the rubble,
searching for remnants of their lives. The determination that’s so engrained in agriculture, though, has our state’s farmers and ranchers getting back in the fields, trying to salvage what’s left of their crops. Although we don’t know the full extent of the damage caused by Harvey, we do know the losses will be staggering. It’s part of the gamble we take as farmers, and Mother Nature holds the cards. We’ve seen our neighbors, both near and far, bring needed supplies. But we’ve also seen
monetary donations being made to our Texas Farm Bureau Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund for agriculture. One hundred percent of those donations will be dispersed to farmers and ranchers in the counties that have been designated as disaster areas by the federal government. The storm of a century, as some call it, won’t keep us down. We’ll weather this together and come out stronger. We are Texas after all.

Roma Receives Letter of Intent on N. Efren Ramirez Ave. Paving and Drainage Project The City of Roma received a letter from the United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development notifying the city
of their intent to provide funding The project will consist of the for the N. Efren Ramirez Avenue reconstruction and widening of Paving and Drainage Project North Efren Ramirez Avenue during the next fiscal year. from an existing street section of 14’ to a 37’ back to back paved street section with concrete curb and gutter (approximately 2,300 ft). Over 5,600 feet of drainage pipe will be installed to drain water to Starr County’s Los Morenos Creek Drainage. The long awaited project will help alleviate flooding in a number of surrounding neighborhoods and will provide for future internal collection systems to tie into. This will be the second paving and drainage project funded by USDA Rural Development in Roma following the Ebony Ave project and is part of the City of Roma’s plan to help address flooding issues in areas with a history of flooding.
“We have been looking into improving North Efren Ramirez Ave. for a long time but we wanted to make sure we did it right. A street pavement only project was never enough. It was important that we addressed the devastating flooding that our citizens have continuously faced. We are happy this funding will make that possible,” said Mayor Roberto Salinas. The total cost of the project is $1,915,400. $775,400 will be awarded in the form of a grant, while $1,140,000 will be financed as part of a low interest loan. The city anticipates construction to begin in Spring 2018.

A North American least shrew is tiny Hold two pennies in your hand. That’s about what an adult North American least shrew weighs. Wow! They’re only about 3” long and perhaps the smallest mammal on earth. You’ll recognize one if you see it. The snout will be very pointed and the ears concealed. The eyes are tiny. The thick fur is grayish or
reddish brown and the belly white. The short tail will be no longer than twice that of the small hind foot. You may think it’s a rodent like a small mouse but it’s not. Rodents have a single pair of large incisor teeth in front. Shrews have sharp, spike like teeth similar to what most carnivores do. Their diet consists almost entirely of small animals: beetles, centipedes, caterpillars, worms, sow bugs, slugs, etc. They may occasionally eat a few seeds or fruit. When eating larger insects such as crickets and grasshoppers, they tend to bite off the head and eat the internal organs. They help reduce the population of insect pests. It should be noted that shrews have a high metabolic rate and
need to consume more than their weight every day. Foraging for food may occur anytime but is usually at night when they search through leaf litter and loose soil. With poor sight and hearing their search is mostly by smell and touch. They’ve occasionally been found in beehives feasting on bee larvae. Most wild mammals are loners, this shrew is surprisingly social. It shares food with other shrews (storing any excess), jointly builds burrows and runways, sleeps in groups (especially in the cold months to share body warmth), and nests in close proximity. It has, alas, a very short life, less than a year. It does, however, go from birth to adulthood in about a month and a female during its life will have a couple of pregnancies
It’s time to catch up with old friends, reminisce, and have fun! For more information visit: RGC Class of ‘98 on Facebook or contact Veronica Cantu at rgchsclassofl998@gmail.com
producing 4 to a dozen offspring. Their predators include the usual: owls, hawks, foxes, snakes, skunks and raccoons. We have these shrews in the Valley and their range extends through the eastern half of the U. S. and down through eastern Mexico. Look for them in moist grasslands, meadows and marshes, but also, as I’ve observed, occasionally in drier uplands. These tiny critters lead hectic, short lives but are beneficial to us and deserve our interest and protection. I hope you see one.
