Starr County Judge Eloy Vera attended the announcement of the DHR Trauma Center where he met with state, local and valley leaders to advocate for innovative health care for Starr County.

The Trauma Center that was newly implemented is the only Level 1 trauma center south of San Antonio, Texas and will provide high level of life-saving medical treatment and specialized surgical care for serious injuries without the need to travel outside of the valley.

Rio Grande City met with RGC Port of Entry Assistant Director Roger Olivarez, Popular Pharmacy’s Cijo James, and the Starr Camargo Bridge Company to facilitate a vaccine clinic for maquiladoras set to happen September 27th at 8:30 AM. Rio Grande City already had one round of vaccines for those with visas. They were sent to Popular Pharmacy on Tuesday.

This next wave will be for those with and without visas. The Johnson & Johnson vaccines will be administered.

The city and the pharmacy want to vaccinate anyone who associates with border communities in the future, if it is possible.

During a regional round-table discussion with US Congressman Henry Cuellar September 7th, both RGC and Starr County have expressed hopes to utilize expiring vaccines for vaccination efforts—

if possible, even for those living in border communities just past our ports. This initiative is still in development.

Sam Vale, CEO of Starr Camargo Bridge has expressed his full support in any vaccination endeavors.

The City has organized a

Covid-19 testing pod to be placed just past the bridge for those traveling through on StarrCamargo bridge property that will provide PCR tests that can detect the any Covid-19 strain, including Delta and Mu. The pod is set to open the end of next week from Monday - Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM tentatively, rain or shine.

Santiago Gonzalez Jr. August 29, 1932 † September 15, 2021

With great sorrow, we announce the passing of Santiago Gonzalez Jr., on Wednesday September 15, 2021 at the age, of 89, in Rio Grande City. Santiago was our dearly loved husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, nephew, and friend. He will be greatly missed by his beloved family and close friends.

Santiago was born on August 29, 1932 in San Carlos Ranch, in Starr County, Texas, to Santiago Sr., and Sofia Guerra Gonzalez.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Santiago Sr.(†), and Sofia Guerra Gonzalez(†), also by his

son, Jessie James Gonzalez(†).

Survivors include his wife, Emma Barrera Gonzalez and his son, Jerry (Graciela) Gonzalez, and his 4 grandchildren, his brothers, Ramiro (Lucy) Gonzalez, Rufino (Nelda) Gonzalez also many cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family, all whom he loved dearly.

Visitation were September 17, 2021 from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm with a rosary at 7:00 pm. Viewing continued on Saturday September 18, 2021 from 9:00 am to 10:50 am, going to Immaculate Church in Rio Grande City at 11:00 am. Followed by Burial at Rio Grande City Cemetery at 12:00 pm. Services are entrusted to Hernandez Funerals in Rio Grande City.

We wish to express our thanks to all our relatives, friends, and neighbors who made a most difficult time in our lives easier to bear due to their kindness, beautiful flowers, phone calls, food, donations, masses, and prayers. It helps to know that others share our loss of our beloved father.

Adan “Sonny” Rosa, III, beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, godfather, and teacher, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, September 16, 2021, at the tender age of 53.

Born November 30, 1967, in McAllen, TX to Adan Rosa, Jr. and Alicia Garza Rosa, Sonny was a 30-year veteran band director at McAllen High School, where he student taught and started his teaching career in its entirety. He touched the lives of thousands of students over the course of time.

Sonny was the percussion instructor of the McHi Band Drumline. He was also the director for McHi’s steel band, Pan O’ Steel. He conducted the symphonic band, a few times, as well. He was an ideal team teacher and assisted at Morris MS, Travis MS, and Brown MS. He loved teaching so much. He

7. UV-C is another ultraviolet frequency that is known for its disinfectant properties, killing bacteria, and viruses.

Many Americans are vitamin D deficient, especially during the winter. Sunshine is very good for us, but in moderation, of course!

VMS Library Kick-off Hispanic Heritage Month in Style The Veterans Middle School Library kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month with pan dulce and a beautiful backdrop featuring Hispanic authors!

Students dressed up in Mexican attire and enjoyed some books and sweet treats at the library.

Other library activities planned for this celebration include a Hispanic Authors, Chalupa Bingo and a DIY Papel Picado lesson that ties into the book Family Pictures/Cuadros de Familia.

2) Ask Yourself, “Am I Really Hungry?” Check for physical manifestations of hunger such as low blood sugar, stomach rumbling, and being hungry among others.

•If you are really hungry, decide which food to eat. Mindful eating is about having that choice to eat what makes you feel good and nourishes you at the same time. Eat what you want to eat or its alternative. It’s about how the experience will make you feel during and after eating.

•If, on the other hand, you are not hungry, find out what is driving that hunger and address it. It could be stress, fatigue, or maybe you are just thirsty. Eating when we are not really hungry can make us feel less energetic.

It won’t make us feel good and the craving continues because we haven’t addressed the root cause.

3) Let Go of Trying to Control: Remember that controlling our food is never the goal. Our goal is to be in charge, meaning that we are able to make that conscious decision to eat or not to eat. It’s about making that choice and learning from it—did we like the experience, how did it make us feel, would we do it again, what can we do moving

forward. With mindful eating, all food is good but we have the flexibility to make adjustments based on our mood, our purpose, and the circumstances.

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 19.7 million Americans (aged 12 and older) battled a substance use disorder in 2017. Almost 74% of adults suffering from a substance use disorder in 2017 struggled with an alcohol use disorder.

Historical Starr County Fort Ringgold during Hurricane Beulah

In 1946 Fort Ringgold had closed its doors as all the soldiers had departed from this frontier fort. The fort would no longer be used for military missions. No more bugler to call for morning, night or meals. No more uniformed men would be seen in the fort. An era of active military life in the fort had ended. In 1948 the school district purchased the fort and the surrounding area. Soon the sounds of children and students would be heard as well of bells calling them to classes.

September 20, 1967 The sounds of schools were silenced as the area was warned of an upcoming

disaster by the fire department warning bell. The warning was the call to action for the preparation of arrival of hurricane. The hurricane bought high winds, immense amounts of rain that caused flooding in Rio Grande City and Camargo, Tamaulipas (Mexico) and surrounding areas. Local leaders decided that the fort would be used for the displaced victims of the disaster. Dr. Mario Ramirez was County Health Officer in charge of the actions to avoid a greater disaster. It was a natural disaster that transformed the fort from a school to facilities to help the victims.

On that date, Fort Ringgold became the refuge of thousands of Mexican citizens and local citizens as they were displaced by the rising waters of the

San Juan River and the Rio Grande as well as the torrential rains that flooded low laying areas. The school district leadership placed all resources on hand to help the refugees. The buildings, grounds and even the buses were utilized. The cafeteria (Mess Hall) was designated to provided round the clock feeding, the school buildings (Barracks) were used to house the refugees, and the gym became the processing center. Records indicate that as many as 14,000 refugees used the fort as a refuge.

September 22, 1967

By September 22nd, the fort took on a new role as the Texas National Guard arrived in to support the refugees. Temporary medical facilities

with make shift hospital was set up to meet the medical needs. Some of the ill victims were transported to other hospitals in Edinburg and McAllen. The parade field became a landing zone for helicopters including one carrying U. S. President Lyndon B. Johnson.

September 28, 1967 By the end of September, the fort with it’s hundreds of refugees went to the parade field to meet the President of the United States at the time Lyndon B. Johnson. The president met with the local leaders and military personnel and received updates on the way to continue with the relief efforts. Soon after his visit as the flood waters subsided, the Mexican refugees were transported back to Mexico in helicopters.

Hurricane Beulah brought rain, flooding, refugees, soldiers, and a president to Fort Ringgold, transforming it from the military fort/school facilities to a refuge center for the victims of the disaster.

The fort’s original purpose was to militarily protect the border and its citizens from Indians and Mexican bandits, 120 years later; the fort became a haven and refuge for citizens from an ominous threatHurricane Beulah.

Today 2021 Today September 2017, Fort Ringgold retains its motto from the 12th Cavalry “Always Ready” signifying that the Fort is ready and will always be ready for its next mission.
