Historical Starr County A colorized version of Main Street Rio Grande City 1911. Yet a young city Rio Grande City was already bustling with business in a wellorganized downtown. The last steam boat to dock on the banks of Rio Grande City was in 1906. The town of Rio became a city in 1926 only to be disincorporated in 1931 due to mismanaged funds. The Rail Road came to Rio in 1926 and Fort Ringgold was back on active duty. Rio’s downtown remains but much work is needed to preserve it as the founders of our proud community laid the foundation of the Rio we know today.
