WOODIES & EDIBLES — 2021 NEW VARIETIES from STAR® ROSES and PL ANTS —
OUR WOODY and EDIBLE ORNAMENTAL PLANTS PROGRAM
welcome
W
e apply the same rigor and standard of excellence to our woody ornamental breeding and trialing as we do to our rose program, for which we are most known. In recent years, our program has grown substantially due to the inheritance of genetics from the Ball® Ornamentals program in 2015, as well as the acquisition of the ornamental berry collection, BrazelBerries®, in 2016. Being able to onboard these great programs around the same time positioned us quickly as a leader in woody plants.

Results from our woody breeding efforts can be found in our recent introductions, as well as in this year's offerings. That said, we’ve been a leader in woody ornamental plant introductions since we brought the Blue and China Hollies to market back in 1970. It’s no surprise that fifty years later we continue to bring breakthrough plants to market. In fact, that’s exactly what we are here to do. Just as our mission statement says, “We are here to bring great plants to the world’s gardens.” In 2020, we are extremely proud of our commitment to this and can share with you a portfolio of stunning woody and edible ornamental plants. Our Woody and Edible Ornamental Plants Program starts with our top-notch Research and Development team. Dr. Michele Scheiber leads our R&D efforts across all categories. She brings a unique and focused perspective on the needs of our customers. Kristen Pullen leads the way as our Woody Product Manager. She has an uncanny ability to identify the most important characteristics and benefits of the plants we are evaluating in our trials. Her evaluations, opinions and perspective on plants have become well respected in our industry. If Kristen says it, you can count on it. We utilize a select and distinguished group of trial partners all over the country to perform intense and thorough zone testing, vigorous trialing in containers and in-ground, and comparison trials against the best introduced varieties. We have partnered with respectable and talented breeders all over the world. Pete Kruger leads the effort to find the best genetics
out there. He brings an unparalleled level of experience to finding great plants, and he has contacts on every continent. Our Supply Team and Supply Partners are equally important to our program. John Rausch leads our Supply Team with years of experience in the nursery business and supply chain. He has a strong grower background that gives him a keen perspective on grower needs. Amanda Touchton is skilled at working through the challenges that growers deal with on a regular basis and helps to keep all trains on the tracks. Our suppliers are the foundation of our supply chain. We have over twenty industry-respected supply partner producing our introductions in all areas of the country. Our Woody and Edible plants and programs are supported by the Marketing Department, which is led by Kyle McKean. With in-house creative, social media, P.R., and communications, her team crafts memorable messaging that helps show what makes our plant introductions unique and better-performing. Some of the most highly trained and informed members of the program are our very own Territory Managers that are not only deeply familiar with our introductions, but also other plants on the market. They know what plants work in their area and take a regional approach to serving their customer's needs. They are dedicated, tireless and are energized! Our Customer Service Representatives are instrumental in assisting our Territory Managers and providing customers with the tools and resources they need. At Star® Roses and Plants, we are focused on hardworking people and hardworking plants. Because of our high energy team that brings vast and versatile experience, we can introduce great plants that ARE better and ARE different. With a solid, reliable supply chain from the best suppliers in the industry and flexibility for the grower, landscaper and retailer, backed by beautiful and strategic marketing support, we are confident you will be successful with our plants.

• Thuja Emerald Squeeze™: All the great attributes of Thuja Emerald Green, but in a smaller package, growing to eight feet over 25 years and remaining just as fast to finish in production. • BerryBux™: A small, edible, hedge plant with great pest and disease resistance. It looks like a boxwood but has the bonus of blueberries.
• Abelia Perfection: A colorful series of plants that will add profit to your bottom line, as it does not need to be pruned in production like so many others in the genera.
As you read through this catalog, I hope you’re able to reflect and recharge for another successful season ahead. On behalf of all the hard-working employees of Star® Roses and Plants, I thank you for your business, both past and future, and I hope that you, your employees and your families stay safe and enjoy a great 2021. With gratitude,
• Buddleia Dapper™: The most compact Buddleia on the market today. These plants bloom early and often without trimming, and new flowers hide the old ones, so no need for deadheading. • Hibiscus Head Over Heels®: Two new colors bring the series to five varieties. Dark-leafed, compact, and huge flowers. What else could you want?

We are very excited to re-introduce and/or expand the following plants and collections:
In our last woody catalog, I lamented that many of our customers viewed us as just a rose company, but thanks to you, the woody segment of our business is growing faster than ever anticipated. We are very proud of our woodies, and we will continue to strive, as we have for over 100 years in the rose segment, to bring you the best genetics that will not only perform for your customer and their customer, but will be very profitable for you to grow.
•
This past year, we made the decision to publish two separate product catalogs: one for roses and one for woodies. I consider this decision a huge success, as I have heard from many of you that separating our offerings provides better navigation and ease of use. With this success, we have decided to make another change. Traditionally, we have published our rose catalog in early spring, and that will remain the same. What is changing is that we will now publish our woody catalog in the fall to provide you with more time to evaluate our offerings and prepare your production plans for the new year. What you are reading now represents how we will present our products in the future…well, sort of. This catalog only showcases our 2021 introductions and several key varieties, but the complete woody catalog will be published in Fall of 2021. Okay, that’s enough explanations. Let’s talk about our plants!
Within our woody offerings, we continue to make improvements to our young tree program. Along with many interesting introductions, we believe we have the most dynamic Cercis program in the entire industry. Our supply chain is now as dynamic as our introductions. With phenomenal tree producing partners, both new and old, we can offer you inputs from budded rootstocks to branched bare root trees.

Y
ears ago, i really looked forward to the months of November and December, not just because they meant ice hockey games and holiday, family get-togethers, but because they meant reflecting and preparing for the trade show season, which of course, preceded the all-important spring season. Now, it seems we are busy all year long, which is a good thing, but when do we have time to reflect and plan for the future?
One of our most successful introductions in the last few years is Buxus ‘Little Missy.’ Many of you have added this compact, glossy, dark green foliaged Boxwood to your lineup, and the sales figures confirm this is quickly becoming the small Boxwood of choice for North American gardens. Earlier this year, we were excited to find out that ‘Little Missy’ finished as the second most resistant Boxwood to Boxwood Blight Disease in a USDA analysis of over 60 introductions. With these results and a supply chain that is committed to providing clean stock, we believe the demand for ‘Little Missy’ will continue to skyrocket.

Our trialing partners include public gardens, nursery growers, and universities whose reliable feedback helps us decide whether a plant makes it to market or not. These new selections must do more than look pretty; they must fill a market need. Whether that be Lilacs that finish a year faster in production (New Age Lilacs pg. 31) or a Hydrangea macrophylla whose flowering isn’t negatively impacted by late frosts (Cherry Explosion), our woody and edible offerings will always include breakthrough genetics that offer distinct advantages in production and in the garden.

he production department at Star® Roses and Plants is a busy crew that produces plants for liner sales and performs functions to support the Research Department with all of their grow-out needs. Whether it’s transplanting seedlings, shifting evaluation plants to a larger container size, or even lending a hand planting in the evaluation fields, Production is always involved. Additionally, the Production Department oversees the growing for all departments at Star® Roses and Plants—from forcing and timing varieties for tradeshows like MANTS or Cultivate—to monitoring and scheduling plants for Marketing photography needs, and building up new introduction stock, they do it all. Every breakthrough variety that has been introduced by Star® Roses and Plants has passed through or originated from our West Grove, Pennsylvania location and has been cared for by the Production Team. It’s not easy to juggle the responsibilities of growing plants for wholesale purposes and research needs simultaneously, as both functions have very different schedules and protocols, but they are equally handled with superior attention to detail and care. It takes a dedicated group of individuals to accomplish the vast number of growing tasks at our Pennsylvania greenhouse. An example of this dedication and commitment is our Lead Supervisor who recently celebrated his 43rd year with the company!
Star® Roses and Plants is the first facility able to ship plants grown under the Systems Approach to Nursery Certification (SANC) program, an initiative under the guidance of the National Plant Board, AmericanHort, other industry members and the USDA. With our SANC certification, we are able to include the SANC logo with all plant shipments from our Pennsylvania based facility. The logo evidences our achievement of meeting stringent growing, training, self-inspection and audit requirements to make our businesses stronger and more resilient against plant pests, diseases and changes in regulations.
