DEAR FRIENDS
W hen is too many choices a bad thing?
One of my fondest childhood memories was going for ice cream after a Little League baseball game. After home games, we went to a local ice cream parlor that made it easy to choose what I wanted: a vanilla and chocolate soft serve twist in a waffle cone. But after away games, we visited the national chain with 64 flavors and my head would spin with the options as I questioned, What flavors do they have today? What should I choose? What haven’t I tried already? Dad, can you read me the flavors again?
After all my deliberating, I was usually happy with the flavor I picked, but sometimes I chose a dud and then wished I had selected better ice cream. When I think about it, those moments are where I learned the concept of buyer’s regret. Even if I picked a good flavor, I was always thinking about the one I didn’t choose.
I believe the consumer faces this same decision fatigue when purchasing plants. As an industry, we introduce a large volume of plants every year and, unfortunately, this includes those that do not solve a problem for the grower or for the consumer. This model only increases the chance that plant buyers will leave a store feeling overwhelmed or uncertain about their purchase.
With this in mind, you may question why we are introducing ten new woody ornamentals in our catalog this year. Admittedly, I also had to take a critical look into why each variety was worthy of inclusion in our largest class of introductions in recent years. I’d like to share with you what makes each plant a problem solver.
Little Mister™ is a high-performing Buxus introduction from Cole Nurseries. It has the same boxwood blight resistance as ‘Little Missy’ but is quicker to finish and has a slightly larger size in the landscape.
Winter Spark™, a true dwarf shrub Cornus, is free of disease and changes stem color earlier than any other variety on the market today.
Purple Oz™ Dampiera offers exceptional drought tolerance and reblooms all season long.
American Lace™ is the first Hydrangea arborescens series that features three colors that do not flop in production or in the landscape.
New Age™ Pink Flush adds a new color to the best Syringa series in the industry. It has lower chill requirements and clean foliage all the way to the base of the plant. The well branched habit of this series reduces production time by a full year.
Snowy River™ Viburnum is tough as nails in the landscape, remaining evergreen into zone 5. It produces an incredible number of flowers in the spring and berries in the fall with a dense habit that requires less trims.
Poppin Passion™ , an edible passion fruit, has an improved habit that can be maintained in small gardens and on patios.
Brew-Tea-Ful™ Tea Camellia is a unique addition to an edible landscape that acts as a low-maintenance, evergreen flowering shrub. Tea can be produced from the young growth without the hassle of drying the leaves.
Our team is proud of these introductions, and we are confident their characteristics will help you sell more plants and encourage the end consumer in their decision making. I wouldn’t be surprised if one takes home an award or two, just like our 2024 introduction, Li’l Annie Oakleaf™ Hydrangea, did at Cultivate with the 2024 Retailers’ Choice Award!
As always, thank you for your continued support. Anyone up for ice cream?
All the best,
Bradd Yoder

Esteemed breeders join this work in a global partnership to produce the best and most reliable genetics.
Potential introductions undergo rigorous assessments by prominent trial partners all over the country. Thorough zone testing, intense trialing in containers and in-ground, and comparison trials against the current industry standard ensure all new genetics are prime to fill specific gaps in the market.
Successful new introductions are again fostered by an internal and external partnership. Together, our Supply Team and network of over 20 supplier partners build up and support the movement of young plant inventory. PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
Our in-house breeding division at Star® Roses and Plants is a team of experienced breeders and scientists who apply traditional and modern techniques in plant genetics to the development of industry-worthy and consumer-friendly ornamental flowering plants. The breeding team supplies a steady pipeline of new varieties to Star® Roses and Plants for evaluation and trials each year.
Once a plant is identified as having market potential, it undergoes a rigorous multi-regional, multi-year trialing program. In-ground and container trials are performed across regional zones to ensure the final product will be successful for both home gardeners and industry professionals. Our trialing partners include public gardens, nursery growers, and universities, whose reliable feedback helps us decide whether a plant makes it to market.
A new selection must do more than look pretty; it must fill a market need. Whether it’s our groundbreaking compact Cercis (Garden Gems® pg. 38) or our fast-to-finish Mahonia (Groovy Glow™ and Funky Flow™ pg. 81), our woody, tree, and edible offerings will always include breakthrough genetics that offer distinct advantages in production and in the garden.

PRODUCTION
The p roduction d epartment at Star® Roses and Plants is a busy crew that produces plants for liner sales and supports the Research Department with grow-out needs. Whether it’s transplanting seedlings, shifting evaluation plants to a larger container size, or lending a hand planting in the evaluation fields, Production is always involved.
This team oversees the growing for all departments at the company, including timing plants for tradeshows like MANTS or Cultivate, providing varieties for Marketing to photograph, and building up new introduction stock. Every introduction that passes through or originates from our West Grove, PA location is cared for by the Production Team.
It’s not easy to grow plants for wholesale and research simultaneously, as both functions have different schedules and protocols. But our dedicated team handles every plant with care and superior attention to detail.
Star® Roses and Plants was the first facility in the U.S. certified to ship plants grown under the Systems Approach to Nursery Certification (SANC) Program, an initiative developed under the guidance of the National Plant Board, AmeriHort, USDA and state agencies. SANC is a voluntary, audit-based program that uses a holistic approach to reduce pest risks associated with plant trade.
Star® Roses and Plants benefits from being SANC certified in that we know we’re producing responsibly farmed products with improved plant health through complete transparency with the state’s regulatory officials. Buyers benefit from sourcing products from SANC certified growers because they’re receiving products that have met enhanced, state audited and certified health standards.

BREEDER SPOTLIGHT
dr.
david zlesak & nathanael holmes
Winter spark™ cornus is a special woody ornamental introduction that would not have been possible without collaboration and shared vision. Dr. David Zlesak is a Professor of Horticulture at University of Wisconsin River Falls and a respected breeder of numerous genetics, including the Pretty Polly® rose series. While he led the charge to bring Winter Spark™ to market, he was aided and inspired by former student, Nathanael Holmes (pictured above).
As a student, Nathanael worked alongside David in his rose breeding gardens. He gained a rich horticultural foundation and increasing love of plants throughout his undergraduate studies that later led him to pursue a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota and ultimately a career in Landscape Architecture. Even as a recent selection by David due to its compact size, Winter Spark™ stood out to Nathanael’s keen eye and how it could be used in his own garden.
David recalls sharing 3-quart liners with Nathanael and how his former student and friend possessed a great vision for incorporating it into his family's landscape, integrating it with other shrubs and perennials. At that same time, David reached out to Star® Roses and Plants and shared the remaining liners with them for trial. Seeing Winter Spark™ mature in Nathanael’s well-executed design reinforced to David and Star® Roses and Plants the variety’s landscape potential.
Once the decision to introduce Winter Spark™ was made, Nathanael’s plants became a key resource to provide a few hundred additional cuttings to ramp up propagation. After working together and inspiring one another in the development and launch of Winter Spark™, David and Nathanael are pleased to have the chance to see it take center stage in future landscape designs across the country.

Tulbaghia hybrid ‘Flamingo’ PP 32,405
This Tulbaghia offers an eye-catching color display. The foliage is lime green with a neon pink base that persists throughout the season, bringing bright color to the landscape. Combined with bright pink blooms, the colorful foliage will bring interest to retail and the garden long after other Tulbaghias have stopped blooming.
