Definition of Subliminal and Its Role in Persuasion Communication is a very important aspect in everyday life. Either you want to build a relationship, sustain your business, get the job you want, or successfully convince somebody about your idea; persuasion plays a major role in these processes. Subliminal persuasion is a very effective type of persuasion. It bases on the understanding of human psyche and uses that to impress upon people belief system. The end result is to successfully persuade them to whatever your desire is. Subliminal persuasion is made up by 40% of verbal communication and 60% of nonverbal communication. As you see, nonverbal association plays even more important role in persuasion. First, let define what subliminal is. What is Subliminal? Subliminal: from the Latin words, “sub” is below, and “limen” is threshold. Together, subliminal means below threshold. In another word, any sensory stimuli exist in the mind, but below the surface or threshold of consciousness are intense enough to influence the mental processes or the behavior of the individual. Subliminal persuasion: type of persuasion which influences people more than just words. It is the hidden power beneath the regular language to bypass the conscious mind successfully influence and manipulate audience’s decision making. Commonly used in advertising, suggestion hints at Sex – to try and stimulate your mind and make the advert more memorable. Subliminal Programming In addition to our physical needs, the subliminal or subconscious mind also concentrates on what is considers our emotional needs and drives for survival. During infant development, there are only four innate fears: of falling, loud noises, starvation, and isolation. All are considered possible threats to survival. As any new parent knows, the immediate and loud cry from the baby is signaled by any of the above threat regardless of the time of day or night.

This is why an infant generally has more curiosity than fear. It will play with anything happens to be available, from a knife to an electrical outlet, because fears other than the basic four have yet to be programmed. As the individual grows older, however both positive and negative experiences and programming cause additional fears, anxieties, and prejudices, some of which are legitimate and necessary for survival but many of which become totally unfounded hindrances to the individual’s progress. This is how the power of subliminal persuasion comes into play. The Principle of Motivators and Satisfiers As we’ve known, the primary concern of the subconscious or subliminal mind is the continuing survival of the individual. As thee person grows older; however, other emotional objectives develop as a result of experiences. We will call these objectives, motivators-these are the driving emotional forces behind decisions and actions. Primary motivators: survival/food/shelter Secondary motivators: ego, vanity, pride, envy, love, greed, acceptance by others, anger, ... Satisfier, another term is introduced to clarify the concept of motivators. Satisfier is the outward manifestation of the motivators. To understand the importance of these term. Let’s look at an example, An boy who since childhood is constantly ridiculed, criticized, and beaten down may develop anger or hostility as a motivator, combined with pride, envy, and greed, the goal being to prove to the world that he is worthy of acceptance. The drive for money, for example is not a motivator because it is not a goal unto itself. It is simply the outward manifestation-satisfier which identifies subliminal motivators or a combination of motivators at work within that person. Sometimes, secondary motivators often override primary motivators. For example, despise the danger of breast implant; many women are still willing to go under this procedure. This actually reveals the myth: “In order to persuade someone of anything, you must create the need for that product or service.” The truth is: people don’t buy needs, they buy wants! While motivators and satisfiers play incredible role in decision-making and persuasion process of human psyche, there are relatively few professional people who realize or appreciate how effectively these driving forces can be employed.
