ANNUAL REPORT

July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2018

Making arts education accessible to Bay Area children since 2000.

Letter from Executive Director Ann Watts Starting Arts has brought high quality arts education to over 450,000 students in over 125 schools throughout the Bay Area since the year 2000. Between our vibrant school programs, dynamic studio classes, professional productions and the powerful work we have been doing in the pediatric ward of Kaiser Permanente, we are honored to be a leader in the Santa Clara County Arts ecosystem. This year has been brimming with success stories and poignant feel good moments. It has truly been a year of firsts! Our Dream Teams had an extraordinary workshop with Broadway’s Hamilton cast member- Ryan Vasquez- as well as our first High School Senior Panel Discussion with Dream Team graduates. As part of our Studio programming, which has tripled enrollment in just three years, we launched our first Competitive Dance Team. These tappers experienced their first Convention (where they trained with experts) and placed 1st and 3rd in their age brackets at two local competitions. We expanded our Summer Camps to include a production of The Aristocats for children in grades K-3 as well as hands-on Theatre Tech camps for those who like to work behind the scenes to make our shows look professionally polished. Starting Arts has developed a partnership with San Jose State University thanks to the support of former Santa Clara County Superintendent Colleen Wilcox, opening the door for our use of downtown San Jose’s Hammer Theatre. We also partnered with Santa Clara University’s Dance and Theatre Department to launch a Student Teaching Pilot Program for 2 students. These college students had the opportunity to observe and co-teach with our artists. Our most recent business partnership has been with Xilinx along with the American Cancer Society. Starting Arts sponsored two events: Opera in the Vineyard and The Art of Saving Lives. Both events raised funds for ACS and solidified Starting Arts place in the philanthropic community. We invite you to enjoy our Annual Report full of numbers and pictures. We welcome your thoughts and ideas and encourage you to explore our programs and productions in person.

“My son has been involved with Starting Arts since the fourth grade. This year he graduates high school after appearing in 17 productions ranging from after-school shows to Dream Team productions. He has also taken several studio classes, mostly in dance. His development as an actor, singer, and dancer has primarily been the result of the excellent staff at Starting Arts and contacts made through SA. I doubt he would be the performer he is today without the training he received through all of Starting Arts’ programs: after school shows, studio classes, studio shows, the musical theatre summer camp, and the Dream Team. “ - Steve S.
