INTRODUCTION Dear participant of the START Summit About a year ago, Luca Harrichhausen and I have decided to take the lead of START Summit 15. The student association START has always pursued the vision of generating impact on the European startup scene. As a consequence, we have launched the START ambassador program to outreach founders, students and investors from all over Europe. The ambassador program of START today counts 50 representatives from different countries. This is one of the main reasons why we are able to welcome participants from more than 47 different nationalities. The START Summit 15 is bigger and better than in the past years. Within the two days, this year’s Summit presents nine highly influential speakers united by their passion for entrepreneurship and innovation, more than 40 workshops creating a unique platform for intellectual and interdisciplinary dialogues, an exclusive fintech panel with representatives from traditional and new economies, an eight hours coding challenge presented by SAP and much, much more.

Especially the exchange of thoughts and ideas between participants with different backgrounds such as ICT, business administration and many other subjects is one of START Summit’s key values. As participant of START Summit 15, you will experience the unique atmosphere of START Summit, get involved in hands-on working sessions, meet inspiring people from all over the world and enjoy two days of finest Entrepreneurship.
Sincerely,
With this year’s theme from innovation to disruption, we want to outline the pan-European way of snatching innovation from a critical perspective and show that there is greater need for entrepreneurially designed education systems and a comprehensive venturesome attitude of the European investor scene. Moreover we want to give first-hand insights in the Asian startup world (China, Japan, South

China has got 618 million internet users which represent just 45% of the population. Cities like Beijing or Shenzhen have turned into tech hubs with over 1’000 research institutes, more than 150 incubators and tons of startups in only a decade. Also in Singapore and India a hard-working and successful entrepreneurship ecosystem grows to global importance. Though, Asian tech companies still suffer from the bad reputation of being copycats. But since the tremendous IPO of Alibaba there is the proof that Asian tech companies cannot be ignored anymore. Tencent, Xiaomi, Baidu, Alibaba are some of the big players in the Asian startup scene. Together they have a valuation of nearly 500 billion USD. Moreover there is a great change of thinking. With strong governmental support, the excellent internet and mobile connectivity rates and two well-known universities for Business and Tech, cities like Singapore or Shenzhen prove that they are amongst the best startup ecosystems in the world. As a consequence, the “Asian gold-mine” attracts many western entrepreneurial minded people who want to join the startup community there. But setting up a business can be quite hard. The linguistic barriers, the extremely fragmented markets, the lack of trust in external solutions are just some of the many challenges western founders are confronted with.
Todd Embley, Program Director at Chinaccelerator speaks about the Asian startup ecosystem, especially in China. See also chapter 04, p. 15
Christopher Ax, founder and CEO of Schmatz Japan shares his experiences of building up a business in Asia. See also chapter 04, p. 16 RECORD YOUR PITCH & WIN A TRIP TO ASIA! Moreover, Switzerland-based start-uppers generally believe that they will achieve a tax free capital gain when they sell their shares in an exit scenario. However, this tax concept is being challenged by Swiss tax authorities. Accordingly, choosing the right set up from a tax perspective is crucial for start-ups. In a first part of our workshop, Walder Wyss will acquaint you with the most important principles applied by Swiss tax authorities. In a second part, you will get the opportunity to explore in groups the various pitfalls on your way to a potentially tax free exit based on recent cases.

Radical agility Zalando was founded on the idea that online technology could create more inspiring and convenient ways for customers to shop fashion. We want to be cutting edge in technology and maintain the pioneering role that our customers have come to expect of us. Working in small, agile teams, our technology experts swiftly turn new ideas into prototypes that are subsequently tested and adapted as necessary in our online store. Successfully tested prototypes are rolled out internationally for about 15 million active customers across Europe. Therefore we would like to talk about how Zalando’s technology team makes fashion come alive, organizing teams to foster innovation, attract & retain talent at scale. Keeping startup culture as you grow to thousands of Engineers.
