Pygmy perch makes a comeback

Lancefield’s Marita Brown has been living with Parkinson’s disease for 15 years. She is one of more than 27,000 Victorians living with the degenerative disease that affects movement. Learning to navigate the new challenges the disease presents can be difficult, and there is no known cure. So six months ago, Mrs Brown and fellow Parkinson’s sufferer Jenny Smith decided to start a local support group. “I wanted to share my resources and talk about it over a coffee,” Mrs Brown said. “There aren’t as many resources in regional areas as in the city.” More than 30 people attended an information

session and about a dozen now attend the monthly support group meetings. The group is open to friends, family and carers of people with the disease and aims to help educate everyone affected. Members meet on the second Wednesday of each month. On Sunday, August 31, Federation Square in Melbourne will host Parkinson’s Victoria’s A Walk in the Park fund-raiser. Mrs Brown’s team Segue Movers and Shakers, sponsored by Segue Financial Advisors, has more than 50 participants this year. To inquire about or join the Lancefield and districts Parkinson’s Support Group, call Marita Brown on 5429 1408. Donations to www.parkinsonswalk.com.au

A rare fish species has been found in a dam near Deep Creek in Lancefield. The Yarra pygmy perch, once abundant in the swamps and lagoons of early Melbourne, are now extinct in most of the state. The tiny native fish is listed as a threatened species both in Australia and internationally. Melbourne Water’s Cameron Howie said it was an exciting development after years of evidence showing Yarra pygmy perch numbers were declining in Victoria because of loss of habitat and introduced predators.

SUNBURY 106-108 HORNE ST Ph: 9740 8999 FIND US ON 7 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 29, 2014

Victoria’s paramedics are highly skilled professionals who dedicate their lives to serving the community and helping out in tough times. Ambulance Victoria and Victorian Government representatives have been negotiating with the ambulance union over a new pay deal for paramedics since August 2012. To break the deadlock, the Victorian Government has agreed with Ambulance Victoria to make a new pay offer to paramedics.

This new offer is fair and reasonable. It includes: • a sign-on payment of $3000 for full-time paramedics (pro rata for part-timers and new employees) – this is twice as much as the previous offer • an immediate 6% wage increase • an increase of 3% in July 2015 and a further 3% in July 2016 – a 12% increase in total. Paramedics may also receive pay increases arising from the Fair Work Commission’s arbitration of their work value claim. Paramedics existing terms and conditions will be retained, so that they continue to receive: • 10 weeks paid leave annually • 10 weeks paid parental leave • 6 months long service leave after 15 years service • tax exempt benefits of up to $9000 a year. Victorian paramedics will still be the only paramedics in Australia to have access to guaranteed superannuation benefits via a defined benefit superannuation scheme, including a lump-sum option after 30 years of service. These increases will mean an ALS Year 6 paramedic can receive a total package of more than $110,000 a year (including rolled-in-rate, built-in overtime, FBT exempt benefits and guaranteed superannuation benefits – but not additional overtime). In addition, paramedics will receive the $3,000 sign-on payment. The Victorian Government is continuing to invest in ambulance services, with funding provided for an additional 539 full-time equivalent ambulance officers. This new pay offer gives paramedics the salary increase they deserve, maintains the generous terms and conditions they enjoy today and recognises the importance of the job they do protecting and saving lives. In a street considered by locals as one of the best in Sunbury’s leafy ‘Toorak’ enclave, this Federation-inspired house is rock solid and has all the ingredients of the favoured era: painted ceiling rosettes, picture rails, two-tone paintwork, stepped skirts and cornices, corbelled arches, brass light switches, french doors, Tassy oak floorboards, lovely leadlight transoms and 3.04-metre ceilings. Another period-style treat in the grey-carpeted lounge room (to the right of the double-arched entry hall) is a cast-iron fireplace with timber surround. A next-door carpeted study has a skylight and garage access. The main bedroom opposite has a bay window, fitted walk-in robe and an en suite with timber vanity unit and floral capping

tiles above subway tiling. Other bedrooms are off a boarded hallway, each with robes and ceiling fan. Also here are a laundry with scads of storage, a separate toilet, and the main bathroom decked out period-style with cream/burgundy clawfoot bath and timber vanity unit. At entry hall’s end, a door swings open to the large living hub, painted in two tones of yellow, with floorboards and all the period features again on display. The skylit kitchen has a dual-level servery bench, timber cabinetry, walk-in pantry, wall oven, gas cooktop and Bosch dishwasher; a slider from the meals zone opens to a side deck under a pergola. French doors under a leadlight transom open to a huge back deck under a pitched roof but it’s the Balinese-influenced

thatched hut housing a big, semi-recessed spa that’s the real star out back. Or perhaps it’s the spruced-up Colorbond shed, transformed into an all-white, newly carpeted studio-bedroom with french doors, downlights and cavity dividing wall; whether used as a man-cave, teenage retreat or guest quarters, this is a great addition. The dual-level backyard has mulched and pebbled areas, brick-edged garden beds, garden shed and 21,000-litre water tank feeding an irrigation system. Other perks of the stylish property are a split-system, ducted heating, Rinnai Infinity HWS with temperature control, and remote-controlled double garage with back roller door.

Is a Hobby farm For You? There’s a big difference between a working farm and a so-called hobby farm. While the former depends on raising livestock and crops for income, the latter is much more about experiencing a lifestyle for various reasons, many of them typically having to do with relaxation and escaping from the city. So before you decide to put on your work gloves and invest in a plot of land outside the city, ask yourself if a hobby farm is right for you. Unless you have a background in farming, chances are you’ll be new to this lifestyle. As with any big change, there will be a learning curve involved. Say you purchase a hobby farm as a leisure property of sorts. Even then, you’ll need to understand how to take care of the land and any animals that call it home. This could require some studying on your part, so be prepared to learn. Purchasing a hobby farm often means investing in livestock of some kind. Even if you hire professional farm hands to help you with caring for the creatures, do you have the disposable income necessary to make sure they’re properly fed and housed? If you’re thinking of buying a hobby farm, you’re obviously already a fan of the great outdoors. But being a farm owner also means being willing to roll with punches, as nature can offer just as many challenges as benefits. Problems caused by harsh weather conditions will need to be seen to, so you really must ask yourself if you have the time, energy and funds to keep your property well maintained.

It’s All About Orientation Where a house sits on a block is as important as its position in a neighbourhood. People tend to focus on whether a house meets their needs in terms of its size and number of bedrooms and bathrooms. But making the effort to find a house that is well placed on its block, in terms of its orientation, can save money on minimising the need for major structural improvements as well as energy bills. For most locations, true north facing sites are the best buy because generally they receive good access to northern sun in the winter months. This allows for passive heating and cooling opportunities to be maximised, which will deliver lower energy bills and reduced greenhouse emissions. There are a number of specific details to consider when house hunting. Consider the Floorplan; living areas should face the right way to take full advantage of winter sun and cooling summer breezes.Visit the home you are considering at different times of the day to properly judge how it adapts to changes in light and temperature. Consider the Outdoor areas, north-facing outdoor areas are ideal but wherever outdoor areas are located, look at the shading that is available. Consider the location of bedrooms, west facing bedrooms can become very hot in summer and might mean air-conditioning is necessary. East facing bedrooms are the best, as they catch the morning sun but are cooler on summer nights. So do your research and add orientation to the list of key features you’re looking for.

On Friday 18th July we held our Family Pie Night for our four Under 10’s teams at Rupertswood Football Club, we had an awesome turnout with so many families braving the cold & miserable weather. We would like to thank LJ Whorlow First National for your kind donation, being the major raffle prize of a $250 Fuel Card. It’s only with the support of generous businesses and volunteers like yourselves that we can organize and run fun events such as these. The raffle was a huge success, raising over $1000 on the night! Thank you once again for your generosity.

“An Icy BlAst” Oh my Goodness, Winter is here! So, so cold, wet and miserable but, take heart, the daffodils are already poking their heads up, a sure sign that spring is on its way.

boards, undercover outdoor entertainment area accessible from family room and lounge/rumpus. Extra-large double garage, wide side access, cubby house, excellent fencing, low maintenance gardens. Ducted heating and cooling add to the comfort. When only the best will do, look no further. An inspection will impress.

On these cold, cold days and nights we all want to be safe and warm. Cosy with ducted heating, a wood heater or, an efficient split system. Landlords have a legal and moral obligation to provide heating for their tenants and to ensure that the heating provided is SAFE. I think we all remember with great sorrow the little boys who lost their lives as a result of a faulty gas wall furnace and we never want such a tragedy to occur again. Landlords, it is your obligation to make sure that appliances installed in your investment property comply with Australian Safety Standards and are regularly checked and serviced. This is the perfect time to have wall furnaces and ducted units checked. In summer have flues cleaned and fire bricks checked in wood burning heaters and make sure that split system filters are clean and the unit is functioning efficiently and safely. Yes, we all want to be cosy and warm and so do tenants! This is also a time to give some thought to the homeless – spare blankets can be given to various organisations who will pass them on to those in need.

WINE MACEDONRANGES.STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

A soft spot for merlot By Ben Thomas

(istock \ thinkstock)

Do you know what the wine varieties mamaia, carmine, evmolpia and ederena have in common? They’re actually different names from around the world for the same grape: merlot. Sorry for the trick question but it helps to illustrate just how far and wide merlot is grown and enjoyed. It’s one of the world’s most widely planted grapes – from the Ukraine to Uruguay, and Israel to France, where it’s the country’s single-most planted grape. It’s believed merlot gets its name from the blackbirds that are so fond of its ripe grapes in south-west France. These birds are known as merlau in the ancient Occitan language. More often than not, this fleshy, easy drinking red is blended with cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc, rather than made into single varietal wine. Its juicy plum, blackberry and herbal flavours help give the cabernets a sweet mid-palate (think of it as the jam in the middle of a doughnut on your tongue) and soften the austerity of cabernet’s firm tannins. There’s a lot of merlot planted in Australia – it’s third behind shiraz and cabernet sauvignon – and it is used widely as a blender. Indeed, I reckon the ratio of cabernet-merlot bottles to straight merlot I open would be about five to one. The best merlot examples are considered to be from the right bank of Bordeaux’s Gironde River. In the past decade or so, it has played a larger role in the blends of Bordeaux’s left bank as producers seek to create softer, earlier

drinking wines. While it’s become more important in Bordeaux, the opposite could be said for the grape in California. The decline has a lot to do with the 2004 film Sideways and its lead character Miles Raymond, who uttered: “If anyone orders merlot I’m leaving. I’m not drinking any effing merlot.â€? California winemaker Randy Ullom says the comments were justified. “People started planting it everywhere,â€? says Ullom, who has made wines for Kendall-Jackson in California for more than 20 years. “When it took off, merlot was planted on the north and south coast and people said, ‘Oh my God, we’ve got to get on this bandwagon,’ so they started planting it everywhere. You’d get a herbaceousness from the central valleys [that had a detrimental effect on the wines]. “At the beginning, if you were to put all California’s merlot grapes together to make a single wine out of it, it would have been pretty good. Soon after [if you did the same thing] it would have been good, then so-so, then bad, then to, ‘Oh my God, we’ve bastardised the whole thing’.â€? But Ullom says there have been long-term benefits and merlot again stands tall next to California’s best-known grapes; pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon and zinfandel. “All the low-quality vineyards were ripped out because nobody wanted them. It was a natural selection thing, where only the fittest and best have survived,â€? he says. “But merlot’s coming back now. If you put everybody’s merlot into a big pot now and made a wine, you’d have a pretty nice wine.â€?

Bombers at their best By Tara Murray Riddell showed again why it is top of the ladder, with an 18-goal win over Melton Centrals in A-grade Riddell District Netball League on Saturday. The Bombers and Centrals will both be among the contenders come finals, with the Bombers unbeaten and the Centrals safely in the top four before the match with only two losses for the year. Nothing separated the teams early, with scores level at quarter-time and the Bombers in front by one goal at half-time. The Bombers lifted a gear in the third quarter to lead by nine goals at the last break and continued in the final quarter to win 47-29. Christine Harris scored 25 goals and Elyce Carlyle 22 for the Bombers. The loss puts the Centrals now a game behind Rupertswood, which beat Rockbank 100-12. In the second highest score in the competition for the season, Rupo scored at least 23 goals in each quarter. Without star shooter Stacey Northey, who is on Australian Netball League duty, Amy Starzer was the standout with 54 goals from 59 attempts. Hayley Mathew scored 29, Monique Nagle 11 and Sidonie Moore six. Romsey dealt Diggers Rest’s finals hopes a blow with a 55-45 win. Redbacks’ Hope Hamilton top scored with 33 goals and Bronwyn Blair grabbed 14. For the Burras, Seline Chenhalls top-scored with 17 goals. Elsewhere, Woodend-Hesket lost 43-30 against Kilmore. Macedon, who had a bye, moved into the top six because of the Burras’ loss.

Gisborne’s defence has again showed why it is one of the best in the Bendigo Football League, keeping South Bendigo goalless after quarter time. In the clash of third-placed Gisborne and second-from-bottom South Bendigo, the Bulldogs were expecting a tough match, with South Bendigo getting its second win of the season the week before. But the Bulldogs didn’t let South Bendigo get into the game, winning 15.18 (108) to 1.7 (13) at Queen Elizabeth Oval and securing a finals berth in the process. The Bulldogs led by 16 points after a low-scoring first quarter, though the lead could have been bigger if they had kicked straighter. They extended their lead to 44 points by half time, after holding South Bendigo scoreless. The Bulldogs kicked four goals in each of the second-half quarters to secure an easy win. Ethan Minns was best on ground with three goals, while Tom May, Andre Headberry and Hamish Govan were among the best contributors. This week, the Bulldogs face Eaglehawk at home. Kyneton couldn’t match it with fourth-placed Golden Square, losing 25.11 (161) to 10.8 (68) at Kyneton. The game was all but over at half time with the visitors holding a 10-goal lead. While the Tigers scored seven goals in the second half, they couldn’t match Golden Square’s 12.
