Caroline Springs activist Tiffany Shen has been crowned Miss Australia International. Ms Shen, originally from China, said she owes her crown to her mother. “I owe this entire journey to my own precious mother and everything she has done for me … She did everything she could to ensure I had a childhood and a better future,” she said. “I hope to inspire other girls, that they can be and do whatever is in their heart.” Ms Shen hopes to use her enhanced public proile to create further public awareness and provide practical support to charities that work to protect children from the horrors of sex traficking. “Quite clearly, this atrocious crime is trying to stay undetected so that it may continue to proit from illegal, lucrative activities like sex tourism,” Ms Shen said. “Stamping out this shocking activity is really just one piece of the puzzle. “The other issue is to provide decent opportunities for victims to somehow create a life for themselves whilst living with the mental and physical scars they have acquired.” Ms Shen has been named as an ambassador for the Sunlight Foundation – an organisation striving to stamp out child sex crimes. Brimbank on virus alert Brimbank is a city on high alert as fears of a COVID-19 outbreak grow. Major events have been cancelled, schools are bracing for shutdowns, supermarket shelves lie empty and specialist teams have been set up at the Sunshine Hospital to deal with a possible outbreak. And on Monday morning, the state government took the unprecedented step of declaring a state of emergency for the next four weeks. his gives the Chief Health oicer whatever power is necessary to contain the spread of

the virus and reduce the risk to the health of Victorians. Brimbank council said it has scrapped a number of its events, including a citizenship ceremony scheduled for March 18. But it is yet to provide a list or details of other cancelled events. It comes as the principal of a Braybrook school said it was not a case of if, but when, the government orders to close all schools. Caroline Chisholm Catholic College principal Marco Di Cesare said the school was set to implement an emergency plan in the event school’s are shut down. “If someone at the school is tested we have to

shut down for a period, even if they don’t test positive … we’ve actually seen that with schools shutting down in anticipation of a positive result,” he said. “From what we’ve been hearing it’s not a case of if, but when … the government is being rightly very risk averse and is trying to slow this thing down.” he school sent out an email to parents last week, informing them of its contingency plan. “We sent an email out to parents and staf ater talk of schools being shut down heightened,” Mr Di Cesare said. he online system allows parents and students to see what work is due and needed.

Catholic Education Victoria also elected to cancel Catholic Education Week events planned for this week. Meanwhile at Sunshine Hospital, a specialist team has been put in place should the deadly virus arrive in Brimbank. he hospital has also established an assessment clinic to test for possible cases. he clinic’s hours of operation are from 12pm-8:30pm. Testing will only be provided for people who have traveled outside the country in the two-week period before their illness started or have had contact with a person known to have the virus.

Call for contamination taskforce By Tate Papworth A Brimbank councillor is calling on the state government to establish a taskforce to investigate widespread contamination across the west. Cr Virginia Tachos will table a notice of motion at tonight’s council meeting, calling for a taskforce to assess the extent of potentially contaminated land issues associated with current and closed landills, including soil, water and vapour issues. Her call comes weeks ater Star Weekly revealed that a number of properties built on

and around the closed Sunshine landills are sitting on buried waste and are being exposed to methane gas. Several residents have told Star Weekly that they had no idea their homes sat on top of a former landill. Cr Tachos wants the taskforce to advise on how to best monitor and report on the toxic problems, to provide the community the conidence that on-site and of-site impacts are not adversely afecting their health and wellbeing. It would also work closely with the council in investigating the impacts the landill sites have

on the local community. Under the proposal, the taskforce would create improvements to regulatory systems to ensure current and future communities understand the presence of known and potentially contaminated land. It would also create an environmental equity package to identify and respond to historic land contamination issues across the west, beginning with the Sunshine landills. But it wouldn’t be limited to the Sunshine landills problem. According to the EPA priority sites register, Brimbank has 19 sites that require monitoring, clean up, and management.

Residents in Kealba have reported being “blasted by a toxic smell” from two underground ires that have been burning at the active landill in the suburb since October. he $11 million Stony Creek Transformation Project came to a standstill last year ater asbestos was discovered and remediation costs blew out. In 2018, the EPA issued a warning to the public to stay away from a number of Brimbank waterways. he agency recommended that people avoid swimming in the water and keep pets away from Arundel Creek, Deep Creek and Maribyrnong River.

I have gained conidence and a solid base from which to develop my skills and knowledge.” Following her successful studies at Kangan Institute, Ms Webb quickly found employment and has been working in the nursery department at Bunnings for more than a year. “I love that I get to share my passion for plants and encourage others,” she said. Brimbank council will look a lot diferent come October with two councillors conirming they won’t stand for re-election. Former mayor John Hedditch and Cr Daniel Allan both told Star Weekly they are set to call time on their stints in public oice. Cr Allan said the upcoming birth of his irst child was the reason behind his decision. “My wife is pregnant with our irst child and I really want to be supportive … I don’t want her raising the child on her own,” Cr Allan said. “It’s tough … council can take up three or four nights a week and that’s not fair on her. “Each term is also four years in length and I don’t want to be away for four years.” Cr Hedditch declined to comment on his decision. Cr Hedditch was the irst elected councillor to take up the position of mayor following the departure of state government imposed administrators. Following the completion of his year as mayor, Cr Hedditch told Star Weekly it had been a major shake-up to his routine. “I was semi-retired when I decided to put my hand up, and then I got elected and then elected mayor,” he said. “So I went from playing golf, babysitting the grandkids and doing some community work, to working 60-80 hours a week in those irst ive to six months – that was massive, a huge culture shock.” Another councillor, Lucinda Congreve, opted not to see out her term and resigned from the council on March 1. She cited family reasons as the driving force behind her decision, but sources have told Star Weekly a lucrative job ofer was also a major consideration.

A Sydenham aged care facility notched up a special milestone last month. Arcare Sydenham celebrated its 20th birthday and resident manager Patricia Arancibia-Collao said it was a grand occasion. “It was such a fantastic day, we had a masquerade themed cocktail party and all the staf, residents and family turned out,” she said. “It was wonderful … all the residents had their masks on. here were some we thought might not be too into it, but they were all up there dancing.” he centre opened its doors in December 1999, but decided to hold the oicial celebration in February.

Ms Arancibia-Collao said the latest celebration strengthened ties between the facility and its clients. “We’ve really made a point of getting the families involved in our major events,” she said. “Recently we’ve had a major family fun day, our carols service and this birthday celebration. “We’ve had so much family feedback about how much they’ve loved these events, which has been great because we’re all about family and strengthening those relationships.” She said the facility plans to continue hosting events that bring the entire community together.

Police are working with gyms and itness centres across Melbourne to address security issues and implement crime prevention measures such as lockable storage devices and CCTV. Police are also asking the community to exercise caution and secure their valuables when attending gyms and leisure centres.

NEWS

Concern rises over rail plan By Tate Papworth he Melbourne Airport rail link has been touted as a “game changer” by Brimbank council, but if it’s not done right it will cause headaches for years to come, a leading rail advocate has warned. he state and federal governments appear increasingly likely to ditch the idea of a dedicated airport tunnel from the city to Sunshine and instead use existing metropolitan tracks via the new metro tunnel. Rail Futures president John Hearsch said

that move would create numerous issues across the west. “For a start, travel time will blow out. We’d estimated you’d be able to get out to the airport from Southern Cross station in about 18 minutes via a tunnel, by cramming trains onto congested tracks we’d conservatively have that number at 31 minutes,” Mr Hearsch said. He said the wider implication are more serious. “he plan, once complete … is to have trains come through Sunshine and go on to Watergardens, Sunbury and Melton once the

Melton line electriication is complete. By adding trains to already jam-packed lines, we’re majorly impacting what this project can deliver. “Something has to give somewhere and we’re hearing that the electriication of the Melton line may now be deferred for some time.” He said Wyndham will also bear the brunt of the shortcomings. “Wyndham is bursting at the seams … the average peak hour train is carrying 160 per cent of capacity and it’s close to the point where it’s not going to cope. he average V/Line train has

444 seats … the oicial capacity of those trains are the number of seats, but some of them are carrying 700 passengers.” According to Mr Hearsch, patronage at two recently opened stations in Wyndham Vale and Tarneit has increased by 20 per cent a year. “By not adding new tracks between Southern Cross and Sunshine, there isn’t going to be enough capacity to meet the demands of Wyndham, Melton, Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo. “If we get this wrong, we’ll be living with the consequences for many, many years.”

Watergardens’ new menu inside – it means we can welcome customers at all times of the day no matter what the Melbourne weather is like. “he Marketplace will become the epicentre of casual dining here in the north-west, changing the way our community experiences eating out and bringing a rat of brand new food oferings to Watergardens.” It’s not the only section of the centre to enjoy an upgrade. Zone Bowling is under renovation and will re-open as a dual Timezone and Zone Bowling entertainment centre. To celebrate, the centre is hosting an opening extravaganza on April 3 and 4 between 10am-3pm. Tate Papworth Zone Bowling will undergo a colourful upgrade. (Supplied)

A $50 million transformation of Watergardens town centre is a step closer to completion. he centre has announced eight new tenants to tie in with the street-style dining concept which will be the centrepiece of the new ‘Marketplace’ section. he new line-up includes Lebanese eatery Cedar Bakery, Old Man Pho, 300 Modern Greek, Calavera and cult favourite Cannoleria. he Marketplace is also set to welcome popular chain 8bit Burgers, Angie’s Kitchen and Hero Sushi. Speeding drivers disappoint cops By Tate Papworth Police have taken aim at speeding motorists who kept them busy over the Labour Day long weekend. Of the 8060 traic ofences issued across the state as part of Operation Arid, 3413 were issued to people speeding. More than 170 of them were recorded during the four-day operation. Eleven vehicles were also impounded. Of particular concern for Brimbank Highway Patrol oicers was a 21-year-old learner motorbike rider who had his bike impounded ater he was clocked riding at 147km/h in a 60km/h zone in Delahey. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Libby Murphy said it was disappointing to see so many examples of people excessively speeding. “his type of behaviour will not be tolerated by Victoria Police,” Assistant Commissioner Murphy said. “Our bodies are a fragile thing and there is only so much force we can take before we are seriously injured or killed in a crash. “If we throw into the mix country roads, limited visibility at night and inexperienced driving – it is a recipe for disaster. We were lucky that none of these incidents resulted in a more severe outcome.” Speeding drivers weren’t the only cause for concern. Police dished out infringement notices to 54 people for disobeying signs/signals, 39 for driving unregistered vehicles, 14 to unlicensed drivers and 13 for mobile phone ofences.

here were also 10 notices issued to disqualiied drivers, six for seatbelt ofences, six drug drivers and two drink drivers. A 21-year-old Keilor Downs man with just a learner’s permit, was caught driving with false plates attached to his unregistered car and was issued with $2000 in ines. Police also pursued three ofenders who they say “tore through Brimbank in a stolen car, putting lives at risk”. he trio were followed to Broadmeadows where they were arrested. A photo posted by Victoria Police shows the pursuit ended in a mess for the local service station, with a partially knocked over bowser, and a spilled bin/cleaning unit. Meanwhile, a 20-year-old Deer Park man was caught driving an allegedly stolen car, with fake plates and under the inluence of drugs. he unlicensed driver was placed in custody and the vehicle recovered.

Melton plate here again One of the biggest events on the harness racing calendar, the City of Melton Plate, is back for another year. his year marks the 11th year that the prestigious event has been held at Tabcorp Park, ater previously running at Moonee Valley from 1989. Tabcorp Park general manager Gayle Harvey said it was shaping up as another massive event. “It’s very important for us, and one of our favourite events of the year,” Ms Harvey said. “We’re really proud to have this event, because it was a bold move to move it from Moonee Valley when they did, and we’ve embraced it and brought it into the local community, and we love that. “It’s not one of the biggest group one nights, as far as the racing goes, but it is a

great night because there’s lots of good races and lots of awards, and it’s about supporting the local community and local businesses.” Up to 3000 people are expected to come along on the night, with a number of attractions away from the track as well. “It’s a council-run event, and council arranges a lot of local businesses to come along on the night,” Ms Harvey said. “On top of that, we will be holding a night market with a number of stalls to encourage the community to come along, and we’ll also have some food trucks, entertainment, and an ater party in the sports bar which will be lots of fun. “It’s also a great night of racing, and it’s a very kid and family-friendly event every year.” Ewen McRae MAV651

Arts centre inally opens

Women’s sports boost

By Tate Papworth Caroline Chisholm Catholic College has inally opened its new arts centre. he $5 million St Madeleine Arts Centre, at the school’s all-girls Christ the King campus, was opened last Wednesday. he building replaced the old centre and former convent for the Society of the Sacred Heart nuns, and was transformed into more than 1400m2 of space over two-stories for the school’s creative programs. It will host drama, dance, music, studio and visual arts and is lexible enough to also cater for large gatherings and performances.

We have waited ive years to build this new facility - Marco Di Cesare

College principal Marco Di Cesare said the completed product was a credit to the college. “We are delighted and proud to ofer our current and future students a building that will provide an inspirational environment for them to do great work,” he said. “We have waited ive years to build this new facility and we couldn’t be more delighted with the inished product. “As our young people interact with this environment, hopefully it will go on to inspire and evoke contemplation for many generations.” While delighted with the inished product, Mr Di Cesare said it had been a long journey to get to the point of opening, with many obstacles overcome. “I must say it has been a journey to get to this point today – one that involved delays,

postponement, more delays, followed by a postponement. It saw three campus directors … at times it was a struggle, we faced many issues,” he said. “Not the least of which was an undiscovered diesel tank, some asbestos, as

well as copper thieves. “here were certainly some challenges with this building and I know there were times when a certain college principal exercised some artistic license as he tried to remain calm.”

Council’s across the west have joined forces to form a ive-year plan to bolster the number of women playing sport. he drat plan was put forward by the Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melbourne, Melton, Moonee Valley and Wyndham councils and is now out for community consultation. Brimbank mayor Georgina Papafotiou said the plan aims to create more gender equitable opportunities and environments in Melbourne’s west. “Now more than ever, we’re looking at ways to identify initiatives that motivate and unite friends, colleagues and whole communities to be more inclusive,” Cr Papafotious said. “Melbourne’s West has historically been an area that is under-represented by women and girls when it comes to sport. “By developing this action plan, as a region we hope to be able to initiate change to address this disparity, build on the work already achieved in the ield, and target further change that is tailored speciically for our local communities.” Brimbank has been investing heavily in upgrading facilities to become female friendly and has a number of programs in place, including the annual Brimbank Female Football Festival event, In2Tennis and In2Active programs. Rooming house outcry

Sunshine trafic lights still a problem

By Alesha Capone Homelessness organisations and industry workers have slammed “unsafe and illegal rooming houses” operating across Melbourne’s west. Tenants Victoria rooming house outreach worker Catherine Dyer said there are “known operators who are making money by exploiting people at risk of homelessness”. “I’ve been in places that are so bad you feel sick just walking through the house,” Ms Dyer said. “Holes in walls, exposed wires, broken appliances, ilthy shared kitchens and traumatised residents subjected to stand-over tactics and arbitrary eviction.” Rooming houses, which are required to register with local councils, are deined as homes with individual bedrooms and a kitchen and bathroom shared by four or more unrelated people. People who cannot aford a private rental property oten live in rooming houses. Ms Dyer said there are serious issues in registered and unregistered private rooming houses throughout Melbourne’s west. Tenants Victoria chief executive Jennifer Beveridge, said the state government and councils “are aware of large numbers of unsafe rooming houses”. “hey have been on the radar for nearly two decades now and the situation is actually getting worse,” she said. “We need a new round of action on unsafe and illegal rooming houses, including giving a central agency the monitoring and enforcement powers to shut down and prosecute rogue operators.” he North & West Homelessness Network, which consists of the 50 homelessness agencies

operating in the north and west, is pushing for an industry-wide boycott of unsafe private rooming houses. It says the sector is forced to rely on private rooming houses because of a lack of government funding for safe and secure emergency accommodation. A statement issued by the network said that the state was “experiencing a housing crisis with 82,000 people waiting for public housing”,

along with “an all-time low” in private rental afordability. he Minister for Housing Richard Wynne said: “We understand there are some rooming houses not currently being used by our service providers and we support them in these decisions – made to protect the interests of the vulnerable homeless population. “We’re also improving standards across the rooming house sector.”

A set of traic lights at the corner of Wright Street and Anderson Road, Sunshine are fast becoming Brimbank’s version of the Montague Street bridge. he notorious bridge has its own website due to the number of vehicles which continue to get stuck under it. he Sunshine lights appear to be heading in the same direction, struck by vehicles on multiple occasions over the past few years. VicRoads did not provide speciic igures as to how many times the lights have been struck, but said it received reports of 32 faults involving the lights between January 2014 and February 2020. Faults can include the signals being struck by a vehicle or another object, broken light globes or interruptions to the power supply. A replacement set of lights was recently installed as a temporary measure. he smaller lights were hooked up to a neighbouring set of lights via a power chord. Residents say the replacement lights have also been struck by vehicles multiple times. One photo, shows the lights lying across the pavement, while in another they’re facing the wrong way ater seemingly being struck by a vehicle. VicRoads said it inspects all traic lights and signals every three months. Tate Papworth

Local parliamentarian, Bill Fogarty, claimed this week that thousands of taxpayers’ dollars are being wasted by Public Works Department mistakes, which have let buildings idle and caused inconvenience and upset to the people of the west.

Almost two thirds of the candidates for local seats in the federal election on Saturday have failed to answer a questionnaire aimed at improving the west. he Western Region Commission has received just six replies to its “Cash for the West” questionnaire, which asked 17 candidates to state what they would do to improve the western suburbs.

Sitting councillors were decimated in what is seen as widespread voter dissatisfaction with the policies of the previous Brimbank council. Four councillors were ousted – there will be ive new faces. he mayor, Councillor Brooke Gujinovic, did not stand for reasons other than election issues.

Western Health medical staf have re-focused the way they treat obesity, reverting to diet and exercise and slashing waiting lists for quick-ix surgeries such as lapbands. Since January, the obesity clinic run out of the Western Hospital in Footscray, has changed from a respiratory focus to a metabolic one.

MY BRIMBANK Michael Clarke grew up in St Albans in the 1960s and ’70s. Now, the newly appointed chief executive of he Youth Junction is determined that today’s youth will have it better. He spoke with Tate Papworth.

What do you like best about the area? I love the multiculturalism of the district. From the time I was a boy, I’ve learnt so much about people and cultures that could never be gleaned from a book. Most importantly, it’s taught me that it’s not about tolerance of others. It’s about understanding of others. Muslim, Buddhist, Christian, Jew, Hindu; we’re all in this together! What could be improved. he federal government’s contribution to district. he state government gets it, but I’m not conident the federal government understands that change requires funding and a policy commitment. What we have from the state tier of government is almost totally absent from the federal tier. From employment policy to community services. he diference is almost frightening. Tell our readers a bit about your role at he Youth Junction. As the CEO of he Youth Junction my role

is to oversee programs that aim to make a diference to the most vulnerable youth in our community. We focus on those young people who are either engaged with, or at risk of, becoming involved in the justice system. My role is to direct programs that will provide a pathway out of a life of antisocial behaviour, to a future that’s both meaningful and fulilling. What do you hope to achieve in the position? Because we have a proven platform of services that are, without question, highly successful, my hope is to expand the program both within Brimbank and the western metropolitan region. I have a hope and vision to also see our programs ofered to other jurisdictions not just in metropolitan Melbourne or Victoria but one day, to have our programs ofered nationwide. What’s the biggest challenge facing Brimbank’s youth, in your opinion? he biggest challenge facing Brimbank can’t be framed as any one thing. Employment and certainty in employment is an issue. Disengagement of many of the newly-arrived communities is a huge challenge. Social cohesion and the need to maintain social cohesion actually keeps me awake at night. he vilifying of the muslim community for the sins of the radical muslim element is something I absolutely fear. he success of Brimbank is akin to the success of the nation. We have to be intolerant of intolerance. As one of the nation’s epicentres of multiculturalism we have to actively work together and to engage with each other. How we do this in an ever-changing environment, is the biggest challenge.

(Mark Wilson) 205238_03

What’s your connection to Brimbank? As an old St Albans boy, I’ve had a connection to the area since the ’60s and ’70s. I well remember a time when there were scarcely any community services. I think my history with the Brimbank region over a long time has been the driving force behind me wanting to make a meaningful diference in our community. I’ve watched people struggle and do remarkably well. On the other hand, I watched people, who really needed help, let to languish. So my connection with Brimbank is one of heartbreak to heroes.

A terriic alfresco area, carved out of the small site by someone clever, is one of the highlights at this sizeable well-kept townhouse in a blue-chip locale. Totally private, cosy for winter, perfect for summer, it’s a real charmer. Indoors, a black-and-white palette lows through, with accent walls in the three bedrooms, each with loorboards. No less than three bathrooms (one is en suite) and three toilets eliminates morning queues. The spacious living domain incorporates a large, classic black/white kitchen with abundant storage, brekkie bench, and dishwasher and electric cooking appliances. High ceilings, alarm, solar panels, and two open car spaces are welcome inclusions. Super-convenient best describes the location.

On the market for the irst time since it was built in 1975, this residence has an old-school look, the type that has character to work with – stepped cornices on high ceilings, double doors with etched glass, a tiled ireplace are examples. The big block of about 725 square metres means the backyard has opportunity written all over it, and the locale puts the new station and Alfrieda Street within short strolls, while numerous schools are within easy reach. The house has three good-sized bedrooms, the original peach-toned bathroom, and three living areas. One is a lounge room, another is the meals area near the kitchen, while a tiled sunroom links with a large covered alfresco area. The kitchen has good storage, a brekkie bench, and electric appliances. The property also has a granny lat and a carport.

Almost emblematic of the type of houses often found in Deer Park and neighbouring suburbs, this triple-fronted brick veneer – with characteristic verandah balusters and columns – owes much to the European inluence of an earlier generation of migrants. It’s a true era-pointer. The well-built house sits on a corner block of more than 600 square metres, which provides potential for adding a second dwelling at the back, STCA. There’s a lounge room, laid with original loorboards, that has an old-school (and effective) gas heater surrounded by light-toned slate tiles, as well as corner windows beaming in light. It links, via timber-framed glass doors, to the tiled dining area next to the kitchen. The latter is big enough to accommodate table and chairs, freeing up the dining area for another family sitting space if needed. Abundant storage and bench space it out the kitchen, which has a wall oven and gas cooktop, while the laundry has loads of storage as well. The three bedrooms, with built-in robes, share a bathroom with original lavender tub, separate shower and a modern white vanity. Ducted heating, evaporative cooling, external shutters and back verandah are along for the ride, as is a garage with rear workshop. St Peter Chanel and Deer Park primary schools, and a Ballarat Road shopping strip are a short stroll away.

33 BRIMBANK & NORTHWEST STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 17 March, 2020

SPORT Salmon scores a double as Green Gully takes points he early-season blues are a thing of the past for Green Gully Cavaliers ater a stunning 3-0 win over Oakleigh Cannons on the road in the National Premier League at Jack Edwards Reserve on Friday night. Ater losing their irst three games of the season, the Cavaliers have hit back with consecutive wins to move into the middle of the pack. Cavaliers coach Stephen Downes said the players faith in their own ability was never tested during a rough start to the season. “he buzz never went away,” he said. “It was a fantastic result, not just for people to see, but for the group to see. “here’s not going to be many teams going to Oakleigh and getting a result because they’re a good side with a lot of quality individually. “Our performance from the irst minute to

the last was pleasing to see for everyone.” Alex Salmon was the catalyst for Green Gully with a goal scoring double. he Englishman scored the Cavs irst and last goals in the win, one in either half, with Nick Georgopoulos scoring the second in between. “I’ve said it from day one that I’ve not worked with a better natural inisher than Alex,” Downes said. Boom recruit Stefan Nigro is working his way into strong form for Green Gully. A former Melbourne Victory player, Nigro’s preseason was cut short by injury, but he is working his way back to full itness. “He’s been involved for the last three games and week on week he’s showing more of his quality,” Downes said. “He’s got experience at a higher level and we

know of his quality. “It’s just getting to know the boys now, the patterns and training, getting to know each individual.” One of the big changes for Green Gully was

Saints still believe By Lance Jenkinson St Albans captain Rob Nikolic conveyed one important word to his players at stumps on day two of an enthralling four-day Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division grand inal against Yarraville Club at Hansen Reserve: “believe”. In what is turning into an instant classic, Nikolic is adamant the game is there for the taking for his underdog side, but it needs to strike early and oten with the ball on day three. Having set a strong total of 259 on the irst day, St Albans took two late wickets on day two to have Yarraville Club on 4-165 to get the game back on level terms. Neither could be deined as a clear front-runner, so it will be all to play for in the irst session on Saturday. “It’s been a really good game,” Nikolic said. “It’s kind of ebbed and lowed back and forth. “One side is on top for a bit and the other side comes back and then the momentum shits back the other way.” Nikolic took the St Albans players aside on Sunday evening and urged them to believe in themselves. he Saints have a valuable commodity in a grand inal – runs on the board. If the Saints take early wickets, particularly the scalp of Will Sheridan, who is on 80 not out for the Clubbers, an upset could be in the works for the side that went into the inals as the fourth-ranked team. “Anything can happen,” Nikolic said. “If we come out next week and get a couple of early wickets, it’s going to be really hard for them to chase. “Runs on the board are really valuable. “I said to the boys, get to training, work hard, go next week and be ready to take a couple of early wickets and see what happens from there. “I asked the boys to believe that we can do it.” St Albans relied on its middle order to post its competitive score. Ater an uncertain start, which saw the Saints slump to 4-71, hilina Masmulla (53) and Shanaka Silva (28) combined for an important 77-run partnership. Not only did Masmulla and Silva get the scoreboard ticking over, they occupied time at the crease, tiring out the Yarraville Club bowlers. Arosh Janoda, who made a scintillating 41 of 39, including ive fours and two sixes, and Yuvraj Singh (27), took it to a tiring Clubbers attack. “here were times when we were really under the pump, but Masmulla and Silva got us back in the game,” Nikolic said. “hey just dug in and that’s exactly what we needed at the time. “If we lost another couple of wickets then we

would’ve been bowled out for not too many.” Janoda’s knock was a sight to behold. “He’s got so much ability and irepower,” Nikolic said.

34 BRIMBANK & NORTHWEST STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 17 March, 2020

“It was brave and it worked out for us.” Expect the irst innings result to go down to the wire when play resumes for the third day on Saturday.

captain Jeremy Walker going from right back to central midield. It is a move that is starting to pay dividends for the Cavs because of Walker’s two-way assets. “He’s stepped into a new role this year in central midield and he did a fantastic job nullifying a lot of the Oakleigh attack using his defensive smarts,” Downes said. Green Gully will host a struggling Altona Magic at Green Gully Reserve on Friday night. In other round ive matches last weekend, Melbourne Knights copped a 6-1 battering at the hands of Avondale at City Vista Recreation Reserve, leaving them without a win. Sunshine digs in to hold upper hand Sunshine has one hand on the premiership heading into day three of its four-day Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 2 grand inal against Newport-Digman at Bryan Martyn Oval this Saturday. he Crows took out the irst innings by 39 runs to hold a priceless advantage in the game. What the lead does is future proof the Crows should the match fall foul to bad weather or be cut short because of the coronavirus. You would certainly prefer to be in Sunshine’s shoes given the current social climate. Crows captain-coach Troy Stone is not thinking about anything other than two full days of cricket to play. “We expect to turn up next week and get the job done,” he said. “We’re going to have to win the game. “hey’re going to give us a target to chase. “I’ve got conidence in our batting line up to bat long periods of time.” Sunshine kept it tight with the ball to bowl Newport-Digman out for 121 in 51.1 overs. Four bowlers – Charith Fernando (2-8), Asela Aluthge (2-14), Ashen Perera (2-26) and Ruwan Jayaweera (2-25) – took two wickets apiece for the Crows. “All the wickets were shared around, there were plenty of contributors, which is good,” Stone said. Sunshine was happy to bat time, posting 160 of 100.4 overs. he Crows passed the target four down, but did not really rub salt into the Newport-Digman wounds. “We would’ve like to have batted into next week for a bit of the mental game,” Stone said. Newport-Digman is still alive in the game, advancing to stumps on 0-5 with a deicit of 34 runs. In the division 3 grand inal, Sydenham Hillside holds a slender 23-run lead over Williamstown Imperials at Hillside Recreation Reserve. Alston Bobb had a ine opening weekend for the Storm with 32 and 5-40. In the division 4 decider, Grand United will be looking to build on their 178-run lead against St Andrews at JR Parsons Reserve. Shae makes it all the way Shae Moate’s connection to the lacrosse community goes back to the age of six. For the past 11 years, the 17-year-old long stick midielder from Williamstown has slowly climbed the rungs from grassroots lacrosse to the summit, earning selection for Australia’s under-19 team. “Coming from under-12 lacrosse to playing in state sides and eventually a national team, it’s something you couldn’t even dream about,” Moate said. “All the work over the 18 months of trials and camps and the long days out in the ield and the work put in the gym and building to become an elite athlete, it’s a great feeling for it to be able to come good and be able to make the team.” Moate will have a lot of familiar faces in the team when he travels with the Australian under-19s to Limerick in Ireland for the world championships in July. He is incredibly one of eight players from his home club Williamstown to have made the

team. Others include Edison Pyke, Harry Gibson, Brock Gourlay, Chinaka Egbujor, Lachlan Warren, Will Olver and Lachy Hodge. “hey’re all kids I’ve grown up playing with since I was six years old,” Moate said. “hey’ve progressed and done the same amount of work as me and put in all the hard work to make the team.” Moate progressed through the Western Metro team into the Victorian side. It has been a successful time in the Big V team for Moate, which has included national titles in the past two years. In April, Moate will represent Victoria on the national stage again, desperately seeking a three-peat of titles. “To win a national title is an unbelievable feeling,” he said. “We want to go out this year and win the title again for Victoria and complete the hat-trick.” Moate could not have asked for a better pathway in lacrosse.

He developed with the highly successful Williamstown program and was driven by being part of the competitive Western Metro set up. he friendships Moate has made along the way is the cherry on top. “I’ve built relationships with people, not just at Williamstown and the western area, but also people from all over. “It’s been really good to build that circle with the whole lacrosse community from across Australia.” Moate is the Don Deeble Sports Star for March. he award, hosted by Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly, made possible by donations from Yarraville Club Cricket Club, Strathmore Community Bank and Deer Park Club, recognises talented young athletes from the western suburbs. Cup clobbering for Western Suburbs

Sunshine’s heartbreak

By Lance Jenkinson Sunshine Eagles players were inconsolable ater their late comeback attempt fell short in a 5-4 loss to Blackburn Orioles in the third and deciding game of the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1 grand inal series at Melbourne Ballpark on Sunday. he Eagles went into the bottom of the ninth inning trailing by two runs, but almost pulled of an unlikely comeback at the death. Pinch hitter Daniel Wilkie was irst up for Sunshine and struck out, while Josh Bryne saw his ground ball swooped on at third base to become the second out of the inning. With one out let, Jordan Young stepped up at the plate and breathed life into Sunshine with a hit that cleared the inield for a single. Nikau Pouaka-Grego, the Eagles young star, thrived in a pressure situation. Ater Young advanced to second on an

uncontested stolen base, Pouaka-Grego chopped a double to let ield, sending Young home to cut the deicit to one run. Pouaka-Grego then advanced to third on a wild pitch, giving Sunshine import Bryce Aldridge the chance to send home the game-tying run. It was not to be for Aldridge. With two strikes, Aldridge made solid contact, skying a ball to let ield, but unfortunately he was out on a juggled catch, handing Blackburn the premiership. “heir outielder sort of came in, it was in his glove and it bobbled right up to the end,” Eagles coach Stuart Clayton lamented. “He just held on to it and that was it.” Clayton is proud of Sunshine’s players for their ight in the grand inal series and their stellar season on the whole. In the fullness of time, the Eagles players will relect on their minor premiership winning

campaign with pride, but now it just hurts too much. “he boys were just heartbroken,” Clayton said. “hey gave all that they could and we just come up one run short.” Clayton looks back on the eighth inning as the point where the game got away from Sunshine. Trailing by two runs with two outs and Adam Irons on irst base, Jason Tutt stepped up for the Eagles and blasted a shot to let ield. Irons got the signal to run for home, but got caught short by a beautiful throw from the outield. It was the key moment in the match and Blackburn owned it. “You take that gamble and we just couldn’t get it our way on the day,” Clayton said. Clayton believes the horrible experience of losing a grand inal will spur the Sunshine players next summer.

Western Suburbs exited the FFA Cup with a ghastly 11-0 loss to merciless NPL 2 side Werribee City at Galvin Park on Saturday. It turned into a horror show for Suburbs, who were out of their depth against a side much further advanced in their development. Suburbs coach Sam Papadoloulos said his side was undermanned, unsettled and inexperienced, which played a part in the lop-sided game, but, above all, it ran into a red hot Werribee City that could do no wrong. “Our let back, right back, a midielder and a striker were out – it makes a diference,” he said. “No excuses though, because like I said to the boys, at the end of the day, you’ve got to take your hat of to opponents when they beat you. “hey were better than us, clearly. “hey were quicker, a lot sharper, better decisions, winning 50-50 balls, movement was good. “We just didn’t respond well.” Western Suburbs fought hard early in the match, but once the dam wall burst open, it turned into a lood of Werribee City goals, including hat-tricks to Ryu Yamagishi and Trevor Ssemakula. Captain George Fakos, centre back Adrian Cannatelli and striker Ibrahim Kanneh worked hard for Suburbs, but it was all to no avail. If there was a positive to come out of the match for Western Suburbs, it was the blooding of youngsters, plus the chance to get another game under the belt before the Football Victoria state league 2 season opener on Saturday at home to Epping City. Papadopoulos is urging Western Suburbs supporters to come out in force for the home opener against Epping City, insisting it will produce a much better performance. here were plenty of goals around the grounds too, with Brimbank Stallions battering Rowville Eagles 7-0, North Sunshine Eagles knocking out Knox City 6-0 and Keilor Park beating Peninsula Strikers 4-1. Sydenham Park, rolling Williamstown 2-0, and Westside Strikers, winning with the same scoreline over FC Cliton Hill, also advanced. Cup runs ended for Albion Rovers, losing 1-0 to Beaumaris and Caroline Springs George Cross, defeated 3-1 by Box Hill United. Lance Jenkinson
