Local masks prove popular

HomeGrown Gifts co-owner Tancy McAleer masks up.

Sunbury residents are masking up to help slow the spread of coronavirus, and business owner Sharyn Snook is encouraging residents to shop local.

The HomeGrown Gifts owner has been selling handmade masks for about a month but said she noticed a greater demand for locally-made masks after an announcement last week that wearing masks outside the house was to become compulsory.

“At least a handmade mask is more fun,” Ms Snook said. “You can really get it to it in with your personality.”

She has sold about 400 handmade masks, with many still on order.

“People are really conscious about what they are buying because they are trying to stay close to home,” she said. “I deinitely think this [stage three restrictions] has caused people to stay more local, partly because of their own safety, but I also think people have been reminded of the importance of small businesses.

“Hopefully it continues and it is not just a fad.”

Three die in outbreak

By Laura Michell hree residents at Arcare Aged Care in Craigieburn have died and two others have been hospitalised, with a coronavirus outbreak at the facility spreading to 45 people. he aged care facility has been in lockdown since July 12 when Arcare was notiied that an allied health professional had tested positive for coronavirus.

Arcare chief executive Colin Singh said 23 residents, 20 team members and two allied health professionals have tested positive for the virus.

measures had been put in place to limit the spread of the virus “We understand this is a very worrying time and we’d like to reassure all families and friends of Arcare Craigieburn that we are putting all available resources in place to efectively manage the situation,” he said.

Coronavirus outbreaks have been conirmed at dozens of aged care facilities across Melbourne, including Epping Gardens Aged Care which has been linked to 24 cases.

On Saturday, federal Health Minister Greg Hunt announced the creation of the Victorian Aged Care Response Centre in a bid to get on top of the COVID-19 outbreaks in aged care

facilities. he response centre will be involved in the prevention of outbreaks, rapid response to outbreaks and the dissemination of information to aged care providers, workers residents and their families.

As of Sunday, Hume had 354 active coronavirus cases and had recorded a total of 763 cases – an increase of 181 cases from the previous week.

Whittlesea had 262 active cases as of Sunday and had recorded a total of 409 cases – an increase of 172 cases.

An outbreak has also been identiied at Bertocchi Smallgoods’ homastown factory.

he Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) on Sunday revealed that 60 cases were linked to the factory.

Four cases have also been linked to Nestle’s Campbellield factory while seven cases have been linked to Fresh Plus in Craigieburn.

According to DHHS, six schools across Hume and Whittlesea were closed for cleaning in the past week, including Roxburgh College ater a year 12 student tested positive to the virus. Nino Early Learning Adventures child care centre in Bundoora was also closed for cleaning ater three staf members tested positive.

Financial lifeline for business

By Laura Michell More than 130 businesses have received inancial help from Hume council to help them stay aloat during the COVID-19 pandemic. he council recently distributed $980,741 to 134 businesses as part of its Small and Medium Business Quick Support Grants. he grants were aimed at supporting business growth and creating local jobs.

Businesses with up to ive employees were eligible for grants of up to $5000, while businesses with six to 10 employees could apply

for up to $10,000. Businesses with between 11 and 20 employees could access grants of up to $20,000.

Hume Cr Joseph Haweil said the council received more than 350 applications with 134 businesses meeting the grant criteria.

He said distributing the grants was “bittersweet”. “hese businesses, who council have just been able to extend a helping hand, are now facing the same challenges due to the reintroduction of stage three restrictions due to COVID-19 until mid-August,” he said.

“At Hume, we want to see businesses succeed and we want to see local people employed in these businesses.”

Among the grant recipients was Craigieburn’s Second Chance Animal Rescue (SCAR), which received $20,000.

Founder Marisa Debattista said the grant had helped pay the bills while the organisation worked out how to operate within the conines of state government restrictions.

She said SCAR had been forced to close its shelter to the public, with adoption now by appointment only. It has also switched its

community vet clinic to a kerbside service to reduce the number of people in the clinic.

Ms Debattista said the grant had also helped SCAR start up a drive-through pet food bank, providing free pet food to people in need. “he grant gave us some breathing space while we worked out what to do next,” she said.

“We are trying to work around what we need to be doing to make sure our charity survives and people get the help they need.

“Without the extra funding … we were thinking it would be the end of our organisation.”

Side-by-side in coronavirus ight A mother and daughter duo are working on the front line at Northern Health’s COVID-19 fever clinic.

Parneet Kaur joined Northern Health as a ward clerk in March, joining her mum Jatinder, who began working at the hospital as a Personal Service Assistance (PSA) three years ago and is now also ward clerk.

Parneet, who is in her inal year of her international business studies degree, said working in the fever clinic was rewarding.

“I ind it really rewarding to be able to help people, especially in the current situation.

Patients are appreciative of what we are doing and understand the challenges of our eight-hour shit,” she said.

“It is also not as daunting as it looks. When everyone is wearing their personal protective equipment (PPE) it looks very intimidating, but once you understand the process and how it works, it is not as daunting. “he staf are very supportive and very nice … the teamwork and camaraderie is special.'

Jatinder said working in the fever clinic made her feel like she was helping the community.

“According to my religion, we have to help the community. As our gurudwara’s [temples] are closed, I feel like working in the fever clinic is like going to the temple because I’m doing something for the community.

“I love Australia. his country has given me a lot of opportunities and as an Australian, I’m happy to help. “his is the time to stand with the community and I’m proud I get an opportunity to do so.”

Schools, community groups, not-for-proit organisations and Hume residents will be ofered booking discounts at community centres as part of a council plan to help the municipality recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Councillors recently approved part three of the Hume local support and stimulus package, aimed at helping community groups to return to using council facilities once restrictions ease.

Under the $172,000 support package, the council will provide community groups, such as dance classes, homework clubs and church groups whose permanent bookings at council facilities were impacted by the pandemic, with a credit of up to $2000.

Not-for-proit Hume-based organisations running new programs between August 1 and November 30 can access a 50 per cent discount for their irst three bookings at a community centre, while school and preschool community centre bookings will be priced at the community rate instead of the higher government rate. he council will also ofer a 50 per cent discount on bookings for private events such as birthday parties and christenings at community centres until November 30.

Cr Karen Sherry said the support package aimed to provide inancial assistance to community groups.

“Whilst our community cannot yet take advantage of this support package, it will be in place for when restrictions ease, allowing the reopening of our community centres and facilities,” she said. “I look forward to … Hume community being able to access the support package.”

Call for more speciic virus data

By Jessica Micallef Hume council is requesting speciic information from the state government about the municipality’s active coronavirus cases. he council agreed to write to Health Minister Jenny Mikakos, to seek more “detailed” information on the COVID-19 cases in Hume.

Deputy mayor Jack Medcrat said more information and clarity on the cases across Hume would better help the council support the community through the pandemic.

“If the active cases are about our younger community then we can work with our youth and our schools,” he said.

“If the active cases are more about a particular cohort or community group, then we can work with the leaders of this group and put more messages out in those speciic languages and again be really speciic about the actions we can take.

“We have been supporting the Department of Health and Human Services through testing and we as council know we can further assist the government to stop the spread by getting

key messages out to the groups most impacted.

“If the active cases show a trend of pattern then this understanding will only assist us to take more speciic action and an action plan to try and stop it [the virus].”

Cr Ann Potter said while she agreed having localised information was “extremely important”, she feared residents could become complacent if they knew what areas across Hume did not have as many infections.

“I still think the major thing we need to get out is to follow those four rules and one of the most important rules is to stay at home.

“Unless we stay at home, unless we follow those four basic rules, the six weeks could turn into eight weeks, it could turn into 12 weeks.”

Cr Joseph Haweil said every resident, regardless of what suburb they lived in, needed to follow the stay-at-home orders that have been issued by the state government.

“If the purpose of the information is for us to better tailor our approach, then that is ine,” he said. “Anything we can do to get the message out further … I support, but really … everyone regardless of what suburb, hotzone or not, should be following the stay-at-home orders.”

Switch licked on lights Whittlesea’s most congested roundabout has been replaced by traic lights.

Whittlesea council recently completed $12 million in works to convert the roundabout at Findon Road and Ferres Boulevard in South Morang into traic lights. he busy intersection is used as a gateway to Mill Park and South Morang. he works, which were council’s largest ever road project, included widening the approaches on Findon Road, Ferres Boulevard and he Lakes Boulevard, slip lanes, on-road bicycle lanes and footpaths. he council’s city, transport and presentation director, Ben Harries, said the traic lights would help ease congestion and improve safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. “he roundabout was the most heavily congested local road intersection in the municipality, so we are thrilled to have delivered traic lights for the community,” Mr

Harries said. “A road project of this size, scale and complexity is usually only delivered by the state government’s Department of Transport (VicRoads) or Major Roads Projects Victoria.

“Projects like this are what matters to the community – getting them home safely and quickly.

“We sincerely thank drivers and pedestrians for their patience during the construction.” he new intersection will complement the upcoming Findon Road extension, which will provide an east-west link from Plenty Road to High Street.

Hume job igures take a big hit

By Laura Michell More than 12,000 jobs were lost in Hume by the end of June as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, according to data specialists .id Consulting. he organisation’s COVID-19 economic outlook tool for Hume reveals a 10 per cent drop in the number of Hume-based jobs as of June 30, equating to a loss of 12,169 jobs. he sectors most impacted by job losses were transport, postal and warehousing (3356 jobs), manufacturing (2311 jobs) and

accommodation and food services (1500 jobs), according to .id. he data also reveals an 8.5 per cent decrease in the number of Hume residents who are employed, rising to 16.8 per cent once JobKeeper recipients are factored in.

Hume’s gross regional product – the net wealth generated by the local economy – fell by 20.5 per cent by the end of the inancial year, which was signiicantly higher than the state average of 13 per cent, according to .id.

Cr Joseph Haweil said the fall in Hume’s gross regional product was “massive”, warning that businesses would be forced to permanently close as a result of the pandemic.

He said a survey would ensure council had all the information it needed to tailor its ongoing pandemic response to the needs of the community. “he sheer scale and impact of this pandemic will be felt for many years,” he said.

Cat adoption soars during lockdown he fallout from Melbourne’s second COVID-19 lockdown hasn’t been all bad, with cat adoptions booming since stage three restrictions were reintroduced, according to a northern suburbs shelter. he Cat Protection Society was inundated with adoption inquiries in the irst week of the lockdown, with families eager to welcome a furry friend. he shelter experienced a similar adoption boom during the irst lockdown.

Shelter manager Lisa Aguis said the interest in cats and kittens was greater than ever.

“In the past we’ve had to rely on advertising to get people into the shelter,” she said.

“Generally December and January are our busiest period for adoptions and the middle of the year is quiet.” he adoption boom has slashed cats’ average stay at the shelter, from about 25 days this time last year, to a maximum of 14 days. he shelter, which closed its doors to the public during the March lockdown, is ofering adoptions by appointment only.

Anyone interested in adopting a cat is required to complete an online application, and

if they are suitable, they will be matched with an available cat or kitten. “he process has worked really well. We can now gauge who is visiting the shelter and know a little bit about them before they come in,” Ms Aguis said. “With this knowledge, we can provide them with a tailored one-on-one experience which ensures they are ideally matched with a new cat or kitten that perfectly suits them.”

Construction has started on a new carpark near Craigieburn station.

Work on the 745 space carpark began earlier this month. he carpark will be built along the eastern edge of the Hume Highway, east of the station, and will connect to the station via a new footpath.

It will have lighting, CCTV and multiple entry and exit points.

A new signalised pedestrian crossing will be built over Potter Street so people can access the station safely, while the pedestrian crossing over the railway line will also be upgraded.

Yuroke MP Ros Spence said the additional parking spaces would make it easier for people to catch the train. “hese new spaces will deliver a signiicant boost to car parking for Craigieburn station and enable more people to access public transport in our rapidly growing community,” she said.

“I look forward to seeing works and these long-awaited spaces opening later this year.” he new carpark follows the construction of 30 new parking spaces at the station in 2019 and 123 spaces in October 2016. here will be more than 1000 car parking spaces available for commuters once the carpark is complete. he state government is also planning to boost parking at Epping train station.

It recently received approval from Whittlesea council for a new 74-space carpark which will be built on the Wedge and Campbell streets road reserves.

According to VicTrack, the new carpark will remove commuter vehicles from the streets surrounding Epping station.

Illegal entry to SA A 44-year-old man from Craigieburn and a 35-year-old Wollert man have been arrested after allegedly illegally entering South Australia. South Australian Police said the men drove through a border checkpoint on the Dukes Highway at Wolseley by allegedly hiding their Victorian-registered Mazda SUV between two trucks just after 9.30pm on July 20. A homastown manufacturer is on a mission to make face masks as comfortable as possible.

PACKQUEEN has designed an Ear Saver Band – an expandable piece of plastic that sits behind your head which masks can be looped onto – to reduce the irritation and tension the elastic loops can cause on the back of your ears.

Owner Monique Samara said the band was designed to relieve the pain oten experienced from wearing face masks.

“We had a number of customers asking if we had any product that would help reduce tension … so our team immediately got to work designing the Ear Saver Band,” she said.

Ms Samara said PACKQUEEN usually manufactures postage, git and food packaging but began making personal protective equipment, including face shields for essential workers, in April.

She said the past few months had been busy as she juggled her role as a mum to Oden, 8, and Zoe, 4, while also designing the face shields and Ear Saver Band. “he primary focus of these projects has been to help the community by producing products in demand by front line workers and keeping manufacturing jobs within Australia.”

Quick service survives

By Laura Michell Service stations, convenience stores and quick service restaurants are weathering the coronavirus storm better than many other businesses, according to commercial agency Burgess Rawson.

Senior leasing executive Arton Meka said fuel, retail and quick service restaurants (QSR) had proven to be remarkably resilient during the pandemic.

“As the COVID-19 pandemic evolves, we’re seeing it afect many industries in varying ways, however its implications aren’t afecting all retail sectors equally,” he said.

“At Burgess Rawson, we have seen strong and consistent demand in the retail fuel and drive-through QSR space.”

Mr Meka said some landlords and developers had taken the change to investigate potential new sites in recent months, while others had restructured lease agreements or sought stronger-performing tenants to shore up their assets.

“We’ve been assisting in procuring fuel and QSR retailers to new greenield developments, as well as negotiating new leases with existing assets,” he said.

“For instance, Liberty replacing Caltex in Sydenham … we have also replaced a Red Rooster with a brand new Taco Bell in Roxburgh Park.”

Mr Meka said while some industries had downsized signiicantly due to a decline in patronage or coronavirus restrictions, in many cases fuel and fast food brands had seen opportunities to grow their national footprint.

“Like many retailers, sales may have been impacted during recent months, however people are still travelling and will always need to refuel with both fuel and food, marking

these sectors as essential.”

He said tenants had also adapted to strengthen their business, with restaurants revising food preparation and customer service techniques to minimise handling and provide contactless service.

Mr Meka hoped continued consumer demand for these sectors would provide

commercial landlords and developers with conidence.

“It’s evident that the industries that have been able to preserve or even grow during this period are key asset classes that should form a key part of any investment portfolio, as they have proven they can continue to trade strongly during a downturn.”

Mental health help for youth Young people in Melbourne’s northern and western suburbs who are struggling with their mental health during the coronavirus pandemic will be given access to targeted, personalised therapy under a new state government-funded program.

Youth mental health organisation Orygen will run the program, called MOST – Moderated Online Social herapy – which will allow young people to access online therapy and peer support where and when they need it. he roll-out of the program will be fast-tracked to young people in the northern and western suburbs, with other areas of the state to be added over the next year.

Young people living in public housing will also be among the irst to beneit from the program.

Premier Daniel Andrews said the program would enable young people to access face-to-face support at home. “his new program is such an important step in changing the way we provide mental health services in Victoria and it means our young people can get the long-term care they need to stay happy, healthy and well.”

Minister for Mental Health Martin Foley said: “his is an anxious and uncertain time for everyone – investing in people’s mental health and wellbeing will not only save lives but is crucial to our social and economic recovery.”

Search for new chief executive

By Laura Michell Whittlesea council’s panel of administrators has started the search for a new council chief executive. he administrators – Lydia Wilson, Bruce Billson and Peita Duncan – advertised the role on July 18, saying they were looking for a forward-thinking chief executive to partner with them. he previous councillors, who were dismissed by the state government in March, appointed acting chief executive Joe Carbone on March 2 for up to 12 months.

He replaced acting chief executive Kelvin Spiller, who was appointed in November last

year following the sacking of former chief executive Simon Overland. he administrators were appointed by the state government in June and will perform the role of councillors until the October 2024 council elections.

Ms Wilson, who is the administrator panel chair, said the council was searching for a talented, values-driven leader.

“It is very important to the panel that the organisation is structured appropriately, resourced, engaged and ready to support the City of Whittlesea community, and this begins with a permanent CEO appointment,” she said.

CEMAC and representatives from Davidson Executive make up the panel for the chief executive recruitment.

Christmas comes early in Doreen Christmas has come a little early this year – in Doreen at least.

During the irst lockdown, Doreen residents embraced the popular rainbow trail and teddy bear hunt movements to add some colour to the suburb and keep kids entertained.

When the second lockdown was announced earlier this month, members of the Doreen Community Spirit Facebook group decided to start a Christmas in July Treasure Hunt

and asked residents to deck their houses in Christmas decorations.

Page admin Yvonne Vuillermin said the group wanted to brighten up the community.

“We know that people are struggling to go back into lockdown. his was our initiative to promote community solidarity and inclusion,” she said. “Most people have Christmas decorations or can easily make them, so it’s a community event for everyone to feel

connected.”

Doreen resident Helen said her family embraced Christmas in July in the hope of spreading some cheer and smiles.

“Last time, we went on lots of walks looking for rainbows and teddy bears with our seven-year-old. He is excited to go on some night walks to see other lights.”

Work to remove four level crossings on the Upield line has started. he line will be completely closed until August 2 to allow crews to install a train turnback facility at Anstey station, enabling passengers travelling between Anstey station and the city to continue catching the train between August 3 and November 8.

A replacement bus service will run between Upield and Brunswick stations from August 3 until mid-November. he buses will be closely monitored to manage passenger numbers and ensure they are regularly cleaned in keeping with COVID-19 restrictions.

Passengers are asked to practise good hand hygiene, maintain physical distancing when possible and avoid travelling if they are feeling unwell. he level crossing removals are part of a state government winter construction blitz and will involve more than 1000 people working around the clock to elevate two kilometres of rail line and build two stations.

Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said the Upield line works were the biggest level crossing removal blitz in Victoria’s history.

“Building these projects is more important than ever, as we rebuild our economy and get people back to work,” Ms Allan said.

“I thank people for their patience and remind everyone to follow the health advice and only travel if you need to.”

New push to postpone council elections Hume councillor Joseph Haweil is calling for the municipality’s October election to be deferred.

Cr Haweil wrote to Local Government Minister Shaun Leane, asking for the upcoming Hume election to be rescheduled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

He said councillors across metropolitan Melbourne were “deeply occupied” with supporting their residents through the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As a councillor in Hume, I represent Australia’s COVID-19 capital,” he said.

“My role is to be focused entirely on discharging my responsibilities to Hume residents and ratepayers and assisting our council organisations to respond robustly and efectively to the many challenges that the pandemic has imposed on our municipality. “he deterioration of the situation in Victoria should leave no doubt that the sole priority of those representatives closest to the community should be addressing the implications of the unfolding situation.”

Cr Haweil said the priority of “thousands” of Hume residents was navigating through family,

education, employment and inancial issues brought on by the pandemic and lockdown restrictions. he Aitken ward councillor said with stage three lockdown reimposed on all Melbourne residents, it remained unclear how key components of an electoral process would proceed. “his includes fundraising, door knocking, genuine and efective training of candidates, arrangement of campaigning, material, engagement with the community on matters of importance to them and general campaigning,”

he said. “hese restrictions mean an equitable and democratic landscape cannot exist in these circumstances.”

Victorian local government elections are scheduled to go ahead on October 24 via postal votes, despite a Municipal Association of Victoria push to postpone the elections until next year. he state’s chief health oicer advised the government in May that it was safe for postal elections to proceed.

Masks through the ages

By Goya Dmytryshchak Masks might come to symbolise 2020 but they have an intriguing history, as one can discover from Scienceworks’ Museum at Home.

While the Spotswood venue remains closed, its Museum at Home and other virtual resources are keeping children and adults entertained and informed, particularly as many engage in home schooling during lockdown.

A dive into the vaults of Museums Victoria has resulted in photos and stories of ‘10 peculiar and splendid masks’, showcasing masks through the ages.

From the Golden Mask of Tutankhamun to dust masks worn by ireighters in the 2009 Black Saturday inferno, multiple masks and their purposes are featured.

From the Museums Victoria collection emerge photos of a glamour mask by fashion designer Prue Acton and blizzard masks made in the 1950s in Richmond for Australian research expeditions to Antarctica.

Other photos reveal masked men and costumed boys dressed up for entertainment at the Ballarat Gala Day in 1935.

Wartime photos show gas masks worn by nurses standing in front of the 7th Australian General Hospital in Palestine during WWII and a British WWI small box respirator with haversack. Another shows a mask of a mask –the moulded and painted face mask of ventriloquist doll Gerry Gee. here are also cane masks from Papua New Guinea – some covering the whole body – that were used in initiation rituals.

A timely addition that’s part of Museum at Home is called ‘Collecting the Curve’, a compilation of photos and stories capturing Victorian experiences of the

COVID-19 pandemic.

Chief executive Lynley Crosswell said stories and items would continue to be shared in the weeks and months ahead as they were added to the “living” state collection.

“Collecting the Curve will also include a series of spirited discussions that will present the virus and its impact from diferent viewpoints, ranging from prominent scientists and researchers to families experiencing forced quarantine,” she said.

Museum at Home learning facilitator Marie Kinsey said the online platform contained articles, videos and activities for families and children to experience at home.

Whether exploring gravity or how to make slime, educational resources are available for people to just watch or interact with online. he curriculum-aligned program aims to support teachers, students and families with content related to science, humanities and STEM. “We now have an educational page which has links to a virtual tour of our museum,” Ms Kinsey said.

“So, you can travel through the Scienceworks’ space and take a look at some of the collections virtually and identify a few objects and ill out some questions or thoughts or discussions about what those objects are.

“It’s an activity that both activates our space that we have, which unfortunately is closed at the moment but they can still interact with it.

Push to reopen bank branch

By Laura Michell Shoppers, traders and Hume council are calling on the Commonwealth Bank to reopen its Dallas branch, saying the decision to close it during a global pandemic is jeopardising the health and safety of customers. he Dargie Court branch was closed in May alongside 113 other branches nationwide to allow the Commonwealth Bank to redeploy 500 staf to call centres and online operations to help meet demand from people seeking inancial assistance as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the time, the Commonwealth Bank said the closure would be “temporary”, with customers advised to use the branch at Broadmeadows Central instead.

Broadmeadows Progress Association assistant secretary Sonja Rutherford said the Commonwealth Bank was forcing people into busy shopping centres where it was diicult to maintain social distancing. he association has started a petition calling for the bank to be reopened.

“It is unbelievable that a bank closure could occur … when social distancing and crowd avoidance is of such utmost importance,” she

said. “People in Broadmeadows and Dallas … are faced with a second lockdown with all the diicult but necessary restrictions including staying away from large shopping centres.”

Hume councillor Geof Porter has called for the Commonwealth Bank to meet with council, traders and the community to understand how the closure is impacting residents.

He said the branch closure was taking business away from the shopping strip and had let traders with nowhere to get change.

A Commonwealth Bank spokeswoman said measures were in place to enhance the safety of customers and employees at Broadmeadows.

Energy plant opposed

Small sacriice brings big results Twenty staf from Northern Health have given up alcohol this month to support cancer services at the hospital. he team signed up to take part in Dry July in the hope of raising $30,000 to enable Northern Health to buy ive vital signs monitors and two patient treatment chairs.

In 2019, the Dry July Foundation helped partially fund a scalp cooling machine and blanket warmer for the day oncology unit at Northern Health’s Craigieburn centre.

Among those choosing not to drink for 31 days is administrator Michelle Fenwick (pictured).

Ms Fenwick hoped to raise $1000, but surpassed her target, raising more than $2500 by the middle of the month.

“I decided to participate in Dry July this year because I’ve been afected directly by either family or friends – some of who are still here and some that I have lost,” she said. “I think it’s important for people to raise funds and sign up for Dry July … it’s such an easy thing to give up alcohol for a month, compared to those who are going through greater struggles such as surgery, visits to oncology and undertaking extensive treatment protocols.

Not to mention those who do all the hard work and ind out that the irst treatment or second treatment didn’t work and then commence a third treatment protocol for another month or year.

“So, 31 days is a small sacriice from my part for what they actually have to endure.”

More than 1000 Hume residents have signed a petition urging the council to reject a proposal for a waste to energy facility at Craigieburn.

Enrgx submitted a planning application for a waste to energy plant at 65 Amaroo Road to Hume council last year. he application is under review by the council and the Environment Protection Authority.

A group of Craigieburn residents, who are concerned the plant will produce hazardous emissions, formed a community action group called ‘No Toxic Incinerator for Hume’ and began circulating the petition in the community to raise awareness of the proposal. he petition, signed by 1056 people, was tabled at the July 13 council meeting.

Cr Drew Jessop said the petition had an “extraordinary number of signatures”. he planning application will be considered at a future council meeting.

Cr Joseph Haweil said while councillors could not form an opinion about the application prior to it being considered, he understood there was “deep concern” in the community.

He said the council was awaiting additional information about the proposal from the applicant.

“I recognise the advocacy of many members of the community,” he said. “here is a signiicant number of people who signed the petition and made their voice heard.”

No Toxic Incinerator for Hume spokeswoman Katherine Lawford previously told Star Weekly the community was concerned the plant would result in large volumes of waste being transported into Melbourne for incineration. She said the group was also concerned the plant would undermine recycling eforts and “encourage wastefulness”.

Rates help fund essential services Rates notices will soon start landing in letterboxes across Whittlesea, prompting the council to reveal exactly how it plans to spend this year’s rates.

According to the council, for every $100 of rates, $29 will be spent on capital works projects, while $15 will be spent on waste, recycling and the environment. he council plans to spend $14 of every $100 of rates on neighbourhoods, parks and open space; $10 on roads and footpaths; $9 on leisure, recreation and community facilities; $7 supporting local businesses and communities; and $7 on family, children, youth and seniors.

Libraries will receive $3 from every $100 of rates, while $3 will also be spent on public health and safety. he council will spend $2 on arts and culture and $1 on animal management and school crossings. he council said rates were its primary source of income, helping to fund essential services and infrastructure. his year, rates incomes will also help the council to provide relief to local businesses, community groups and not-for-proit agencies providing frontline services during the pandemic.

said ratepayers struggling to pay their rates on time can apply for an interest-free payment plan until June 30, 2021. In extreme cases of hardship, applications will be considered for interest-free payment deferrals until June 30, 2021.

“We understand that COVID-19 has caused signiicant emotional and inancial stress across our community,” Ms Wilson said.

“Council’s COVID-19 Hardship Policy provides residents, businesses, groups and clubs with inancial relief from rates, fees and charges.

“While we won’t have a comprehensive

understanding of the full inancial impact of the pandemic for many months yet, council’s strong inancial management and good governance practices will enable us to respond proportionately and efectively to this rapidly changing situation.”

Beat the ‘iso’ blues in ways old and new Grandparents all over the country must be mighty happy that they live in the era of Facetime and Zoom, what with the pandemic lockdowns and ‘iso’. Although not able to wrap their grandkids in big hugs, they can at least see and talk to their favourite small people, writes Carole Levy.

It seems, now, a bit scary to think that people going through the same quarantine restrictions during the 1918 Spanish lu had no technology to maintain contact, with even (rare) phones oten restricted to emergency calls.

But they did write letters. It turns out that this disappearing art of “talking on paper” is a terriic partner for our tech contact with the grandies.

In fact, there’s more than one way to keep in dynamic, loving contact with them – and they’re ways that are guaranteed to bring lots of smiles, with neither much talent nor efort required.

Here are a couple to think about:

1. Write a letter Post your letter in a large envelope, addressed to your grandchild’s name, and enclose a bundle of smaller unsealed envelopes with an A4 sheet of paper inside each, stamped and addressed to you.

Kids love getting letters. And if you make it easy on them (and their parents), you’ll receive back letters – or pictures – from them. hey’re great grandma-type keepsakes, and whacked in a scrapbook, could mark the ‘season of COVID-19’ in years to come. And kids say the funniest things so imagine the laughs come their 21st birthdays.

2. Direct a movie Nothing fancier than a smartphone or iPad is required, and directorial talent is optional.

he point is to give the grandkids a glimpse into your life during enforced separation, by simply ilming yourself or another as you/they go about the day.

It might be grandpa in his garden, or tinkering in his shed, or grandma doing

her morning crossword or picking herbs for the night’s dinner. Choose small vignettes, stopping and starting wherever, but keep up a running conversation about what’s happening in front of you.

Food forges sense of community Relecting the cultural mix of its residents, Baptcare Wattle Grove Community is notable for its focus on high-quality, culturally diverse food, according to in-house chef Raj, who’s passionate about the role of good food in the lives of aged care residents.

Healthy lifestyle in an unusual situation The current COVID-19 restrictions have had some surprisingly positive outcomes for the community, reports Andrea Apostolopoulos, lifestyle co-ordinator.

“Our lifestyle activities are continuing with a focus on safer, smaller groups, which means our staff are now spending more one-on-one time with residents, helping them do the things they love,” Andrea says.

“Not only that, friendships between the residents are becoming stronger, too.

“One of our residents recently commented that they think of the staff and fellow residents as their family, which was lovely.”

Camila Dahan, client relationship partner, notes that with COVID-19, new safety processes and measures are in place.

“Wattle Grove has strict protocols to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our residents, visitors and staff.

“In light of these processes, we continue to accept new admissions and still conduct tours.”

he purpose-built centre, for early childhood education and care services along with three and four-year-old kinder, has seven age-speciic indoor play spaces along with four separate age appropriate outdoor play spaces where the children learn through play with their peers of a similar age.

A team of highly qualiied educators comprises three full-time teachers, an off-the-loor educational leader, room leaders, along with assistant educators who are certiicate III or diploma qualiied.

Owner and mum of ive Nicole Llewellyn says it’s about ensuring the best level of education and care is provided to all children.

“I have an amazing team of educators and teachers who share the same vision as me, to provide high level education and care to local children in order to develop their school readiness skills,” Nicole says.

“I love to see every day children coming into the centre, waving goodbye to mum and dad with big smiles on their faces, ready and happy to be here … I’m even prouder when the children start with us as a baby or toddler and then they graduate from our kinder program to go off to school.”

The centre welcomes children aged six weeks to six years of age and provides a school holiday program for children aged up to 10 years of age.

Nine-hour, 10-hour and 12-hour sessions

are offered based on each family’s needs and childcare subsidy hours.

Kool Kidz has its own curriculum known as the Kool Beginnings Curriculum which links to the Early Years Learning Framework and parents are kept in the loop via a convenient Kool Konnect app.

“Our focus is on play-based learning as research has shown this is the most successful approach to children’s learning, ensuring they are ready for school,” Nicole says.

“In Kinder, we run a structured learning program with a focus on social and emotional development along with the development of self-help skills such as being able to dress themselves and put on their shoes.

“We also learn Italian in our Kinder room through the Early Learning Languages Australia program.”

The children learn Italian on the iPad for 10 minutes each day they are in attendance.

focuses on creating a consistent routine which supports all children to develop those skills required for four-year-old kinder such as toileting independently and self-serving each of their fresh cooked meals each day. There’s also the Bush Kinder program where the children get to explore nature and continue to develop their literacy and numeracy skills.

All children, from babies through to kinder, enjoy free incursions and excursions, daily yoga, weekly Kids in the Kitchen

sessions, Little Sports Hero’s program on Mondays and Hey Dee Ho music program on Fridays.

All staff have irst aid qualiications, anaphylaxis, asthma and CPR, along with Child Protection Training, Safe Food Handling Training and COVID-19 training.
