Derrimut Hotel staff were jumping out of their skins to serve a pot and parma when the pub reopened last week.

General manager Michelle Morrow said ahead of the opening that they couldn’t wait to welcome people back.

“We are really excited to welcome the community back into the hotel for a nice COVID-safe cold beer and a parma,“ she said. “There’s nothing better than a beer from the tap.

“It’s giving people something to look forward to and it’s super exciting. We want to showcase what we have done for decades.”

Ms Morrow said they had been busy during the lockdown with staff training, making sure all staff were vaccinated and launching an app for customers.

She said if everything goes to plan, they will be in for a big couple of months.

“We’ve got a Spring Carnival menu up and we’re looking at the Christmas menus as well.

“There’s lots of good things happening.”

Planning power uproar

By Tara Murray Some Brimbank residents and councillors have expressed concern about the state government taking increased planning powers on key projects.

In recent weeks, residents have raised concerns about two projects, a Keilor Downs social housing project and a 41 hectare development in Cairnlea. The government has planning controls over the first project, while Development Victoria is urging the government to give the planning minister control over the Cairnlea development.

Cr Victoria Borg raised a notice of motion at last week’s council meeting, stating that council wants to be the planning authority on Cairnlea development.

The council, which will write to Planning Minister Richard Wynne, has been informed that Development Victoria has requested that Mr Wynne becomes the planning and responsible authority for the development and Amendment C222 to the Brimbank Planning Scheme. This leaves the council with little say over the development of the 41-hectare site.

Cr Borg was among a number of concerned residents who were recently part of an online community meeting.

“Development Victoria recently provided an update and briefing to the Cairnlea community on the ongoing development of the area,” she said. “The local community is concerned about the proposed erosion of the decision making by council in relation to the planning and development of Cairnlea.

“At last month’s council meeting, a number of community members asked public questions about our views.

“The questions clearly indicated that there is heightened concern among the Cairnlea community that they would be cut out.”

Cr Bruce Lancashire said it was a worry that the state government was increasingly taking on more planning controls right across Melbourne.

“The loss of planning and responsible authority powers to the state government on any site, is unfortunate as it does a couple of things,” he said.

“It removes the ability of the community to be engaged through their council in the planning process and It also removes our ability to negotiate the best deal possible.”

Council’s city development director Kelvin Walsh said the removal of any legislative powers from council, such as of its planning and responsible authority powers, is concerning.

“Removing council’s planning authority powers erodes one of the fundamental obligations of local government. Council is obliged to ensure the major projects or developments are considered from the perspective of local benefit and are in keeping with the Brimbank Planning scheme requirements.”

A state government spokesperson said the government was striving to strike the right balance between building for Victoria’s needs, hearing council and community voices in decision making, and protecting environment and heritage values.

Social housing debate fires up

By Tara Murray A fiery debate erupted at the Brimbank council meeting on Tuesday night over plans for a social housing development in Keilor Downs.

As reported by Star Weekly, residents in the surrounding streets have raised concerns about the 47 dwellings in Copernicus Way, which are being built as part of the Big Housing Build.

The group of residents against the proposal have raised a number of concerns about the development, including increased traffic from the development, access to services and public transport, lack of consultation and a lack of resources including mental health.

The state government is overseeing the

project, which is being run by Baptcare.

The council raised the matter as an urgent business matter at the council meeting, to express its view on the project.

The council eventually passed a motion providing feedback on the project, which said the council had found that the development complies with the requirements, subject to recommended changes to the plans and associated documents.

The motion also called for the consultation period with the local community to be extended.

Several councillors spoke in favour of the project saying they needed more social housing, but were critical of the consultation process.

Cr Jae Papalia said it was a really tough

situation, a view shared by other councillors.

“I do hear concerns from our residents,” she said.

“I do agree that the consultation has been poor and I believe the council should express concern about how that has been handled.

“Homelessness in Brimbank is the highest of the west … I think this project presents diverse housing.”

Cr Sam David said it was a must for the council to support increasing social housing.

Not all councillors supported the motion, with Cr Maria Kerr and Cr Virginia Tachos voting against it.

Cr Kerr, who lives near the proposed location, put up an alternative motion which included just 37 one-bedroom dwellings with a number of other changes, which was

rejected. She said the community had been willing to support the amended motion.

“I submit this amended motion on behalf of the community,” she said.

“The community has responded with over 1100 signatures on a petition.

“The residents are not proposing social housing, they are concerned about the scale and the density of this development.

“The addition of 47 units in an already clustered area will add to traffic congestion and social distancing concerns. The changes proposed to this development have the ability to transform this precinct into a development the community can support and be proud of.”

Many residents took to social media after the council meeting expressing their frustrations with the decision.

Upgraded parks ready to explore Three Brimbank parks have been upgraded just in time for summer, with other park expected to open next month.

The upgrades of Balmoral Park in Derrimut, Evergreen Reserve in Albanvale and Northumberland Reserve in Sunshine North are all complete, providing more options for people to get outside.

An off-leash dog park at Kevin Flint in Cairnlea is due to open next month.

Brimbank council has upgraded a number

of parks and playgrounds since July 2020, including Keilor Park Recreation Reserve, Shirley Street Reserve, Errington Reserve skate park, Elford Green Reserve in Cairnlea, Caprice Court Reserve, the skatepark at Packard Street Reserve, and the dog off-leash park in Keilor Downs.

Mayor Ranka Rasic said it was fantastic to see more new and upgraded parks and playgrounds in Brimbank.

“I’m proud to be a part of a council now

delivering on better parks, greener streets and more places for residents to keep active, and support healthier and happier communities,“ she said. “With over 250 parks and reserves in Brimbank there’s lots of ways to discover something new in your local neighbourhood.”

Brimbank residents are one step closer to normality, with a number of COVID-19 restrictions to ease on Friday night.

On Sunday, Premier Daniel Andrews announced that 80 per cent of Victorians aged 16 and over were expected to be fully vaccinated by later this week, triggering the next stage in the state’s reopening roadmap.

The milestone means restrictions will be eased at 6pm on Friday.

Among the changes is that there will no longer be different rules for metropolitan and regional Victoria.

Community sport can return, while masks are no longer mandatory outdoors.

Melburnians will be able to travel to regional Victoria from Friday night.

Mr Andrews also announced a range of changes to restrictions for when Victoria hits 90 per cent double dose vaccinated for people aged 12 and over.

This is expected about November 24.

At this point, caps or density quotients will be removed for all settings, and masks will only be mandatory indoors in some high-risk settings such as hospitals, aged care, public transport and justice and correctional facilities.

There will be no restrictions for indoor and outdoor events provided they follow COVIDSafe rules including vaccination requirements.

Mr Andrews said the state government was delivering on what it had promised.

“Victorians have met this challenge beyond any of our expectations and these vaccination rates are an incredible achievement. We’re on our way to being one of the most vaccinated – and therefore one of the safest – places in the entire world,” he said.

Brimbank SES volunteer steps up to help paramedics Brimbank SES member Michael Casha wanted to do a bit more to help out during the COVID-19 pandemic. So when the opportunity came for emergency service members to help Ambulance Victoria staff handle the growing number of patients, he jumped at the chance to lend a hand.

“I think it was an unbelievable opportunity,” he said. “I’ve been an SES member for 13 years and I was looking at the pandemic thinking what can I do now?

“[Paramedics] are such incredible health professionals, especially during the pandemic.“ Mr Casha had both online and in-person training before taking to the road with a paramedic.

He had to learn how to drive the vehicle, advanced first aid training, manual handling techniques and being able to check for vital signs.

Mr Casha said there was a mix of nerves and excitement when he did his first shift.

“I didn’t know what to expect,” he said.

“There is a sense of pride in helping them and giving back. I’ve done about eight shifts now. I was extremely tired after the first few, but I’ve honestly been energised speaking to all the paramedics.”

Mr Casha said he was doing two to three shifts a week.

Three other members of the Brimbank unit have recently completed their training to go out on the road with paramedics.

Mr Casha said this experience would make him a better SES member.

“The skills we are learning in health care and first aid are important,” he said.

“It’s emergency management and it helps with better ways to communicate. We can take those back to the SES. “It makes me a better SES member and community member.”

Industry keen for ‘I do’

By Tara Murray After an 18 months which has seen wedding after wedding cancelled or postponed, Sharon Munro is hoping we are coming out the other side.

The Brimbank local who is a wedding planner, organiser and celebrant has seen her industry come to a complete stop.

She said the resumption of weddings was welcomed.

“It has been pretty tough,” she said. “The wedding industry has been hit really hard like so many other businesses.

“We can’t just open up straight away like

retail. It takes time to plan which makes us a bit different from the rest.”

Ms Munro said the industry was still feeling the toll of the first lockdown, and said at times during the lockdowns the industry had completely closed.

She said those who had booked weddings before the pandemic had rebooked weddings, only to have them postponed again.

“Wedding plans come to a virtual halt, which we’ve never seen before,” she said.

“How can you plan a wedding without knowing what you can do?

“I’ve found that couples that had planned before the pandemic, have taken it the hardest

as it had never crossed their mind.”

Ms Munro said that couples had started to approach her about planning weddings, but she expected it would be a while before the industry was back to normal.

“It will still take a few more months before couples gain confidence to plan such a magical day in their lives,“ she said.

“There’s still uncertainty until we open fully and you can feel normal and confident.

“I’m starting to get inquiries, but people aren’t setting dates just yet.”

Ms Munro said she was keen to talk to local suppliers about working together in the future.

The majority of people are keen to get back into gyms and interact with others, according to a local gym owner.

AB Health & Fitness in Keilor Park opened on Friday for outdoor classes, with the hope a full opening isn’t far away.

Owner Aaron Nauta said he was pretty excited to open up again.

“We are now allowed 50 people outdoors to be able to teach,” he said.

“When it hits 80 per cent we’ll be allowed 150 people in the doors. We’ll go from having no one in there to have 150 indoors.”

Mr Nauta said the gym had been doing one-on-one and small group training in recent weeks, which had been pretty much booked out.

He said everyone had been keen to get back to the gym and around their friends.

“They have been very keen if there has been a spot available,” he said.

“They are keen to get back out and want to do it in person and the atmosphere has been one of a positive attitude. They’ve all wanted to stay and chat.

“I think 95 per cent of people are excited to come back.”

Errington safety concerns grow Safety concerns continue to grow around Errington Reserve in St Albans.

As reported by Star Weekly in June, many people feel unsafe using the area which has recently been upgraded by Brimbank council.

At the time, local football coach Robert Black said it was common to find drug paraphernalia in the area, while there are regularly burnt-out cars nearby.

Last week, a resident told Star Weekly that the behaviour has become worse, with many people avoiding the area.

Brimbank councillor Virginia Tachos took to social media, saying she was aware of an increase in safety concerns in the Errington precinct.

“I have reported this to the [chief executive] and requested an urgent meeting with the police ASAP to address the situation,” the post said.

“It’s unacceptable that people do not feel safe using council recreational facilities.”

People commenting on the post mentioned being threatened by groups of drunk people,

harassment, witnessing fights and arguments, people urinating in public, syringes and people breaking public gathering orders.

Mayor Ranka Rasic said the criminal behaviour was a police matter.

“However, in June, 2021, council conducted a security audit and assessment of the Errington Reserve precinct and worked with a number of stakeholders, including the police and council’s sport and recreation officers who have contact with local sporting groups,” she said.

“Initiatives to improve the amenity of the area include installing additional lighting.

Once restrictions are sufficiently eased there are plans to hold outdoor programs and

events to encourage positive behaviours and bring more families and community groups to enjoy the facilities offered at the Errington Reserve precinct.”

Local police didn’t respond to a request for comment this week, but in June, Keilor Downs Senior Sergeant Terry West said that police had increased patrols in the area and were looking at other measures to help keep residents safe.

“We are aware of some issues with local sporting clubs and we’re working with the council to address those concerns,” he said.

“We’re increasing patrols as much as we can.

We’re working with the community where we can.”

Crossing works ramp up A new temporary road will run alongside Fitzgerald Road in Ardeer as the level crossing removal works ramp up.

Last weekend, crews worked to set up the temporary road, which is part of works to remove the dangerous and congested level crossing.

The road will allow for major works to progress without major disruptions to the community, with traffic safety flowing on the new temporary road.

The new road will open on Tuesday.

The Fitzgerald Road crossing will be removed by building a road bridge over the rail line.

The level crossing is one of three in Brimbank that are being removed to make traffic flow smoother. Level crossings at Robinsons Road and Mt Derrimut Road in Deer Park are also being removed.

The Fitzgerald Road and Robinsons Roads crossing are set for completion in 2023 and the Mt Derrimut Road crossing the following year.

Currently, the boom gates in Deer Park and Ardeer can be down for up to 45 per cent of the morning peak, according to state government data.

Cash boost for health services

Saving on school costs

By Tara Murray A program run by The Smith Family is helping Brimbank families make sure their children have everything they need to return back to school.

With the pandemic taking a toll on many families, the Saver Plus program is helping cover the costs needed to send their kids back to school.

Since the beginning of the year, 62 people from Brimbank have joined Saver Plus, a financial education program that strengthens participants’ financial skills and savings habits.

Over a 10-month period, participants

save monthly for an education-related goal and complete online financial education workshops.

Upon successfully reaching their savings goal, participants are awarded up to $500 in matched savings from ANZ. Families in the Brimbank area are invited to join Saver Plus, which is developed by the Brotherhood of St Laurence and ANZ and is delivered locally by The Smith Family.

Saver Plus co-ordinator Aara Paora said the program is a great way to help families start planning for upcoming back to school costs, including sports and other activities.

“COVID-19 has had a significant impact on families in our community. Getting kids

back to school and into their extra-curricular activities will play a major role in supporting wellbeing. I encourage families to enrol in Saver Plus now as an easy way to start saving for these costs.”

Since 2003, more than 50,000 people across Australia have completed the Saver Plus program. Research by RMIT University found that 83 per cent of participants reported that use of the matched savings made a positive impact on their children’s education. Participants also reported feeling better able to provide for their family after completing Saver Plus.

Funding for upgrades of facilities at Sunshine Hospital and IPC Health’s St Albans Clinic are among those included in the first round of the Metropolitan Health Infrastructure Fund.

The $200 million fund, which was established last year, provides vital funding to health services and agencies across Melbourne to improve service capacity, service efficiency and deliver contemporary models of care.

Twenty-six health services and agencies from across Melbourne have received funding from the fund for almost 50 projects as part of the first round of funding from the state government.

IPC Health’s St Albans Clinic will receive a refurbishment and an upgrade of the reception area, parenting rooms and consulting rooms.

Funding has also been allocated to Western Health for the installation of Reverse Osmosis filtration systems at Sunshine, Footscray, Williamstown and Sunbury hospitals.

Western Health has also received funding for the expansion and upgrade of pharmacy facilities at Sunshine Hospital.

Health Minister Martin Foley said the state government was investing in health services across the state, and helping them deliver the high-quality care Victorians deserve.

“This is about ensuring our busiest hospitals have the vital infrastructure and equipment they need – because Victorians should be able to access quality healthcare, no matter where they live.”

It was a sad day for the Brimbank Highway Patrol recently as the unit relinquished its last Holden SS Commodore.

A member of the highway patrol unit took to the Brimbank Eyewatch Facebook page to pen a goodbye letter to the much-loved cars.

“It really is the end of an era, many members in the unit have been driving V8’s at work for decades and they will be sorely missed,” the letter said.

“For me the SS was the perfect work tool, like a good hammer, simple but very good to hit nails with.

“I’m sure many will be sad to see it go and work will never quite be the same without the roar of the V8 either in the cabin, buzzing the tower, echoing through quiet streets or bleeding through the police radio when you hear your mates going after someone.

“The silver bullet was the final SS in our fleet after the cookie monster and red rocket came to an untimely end, all three saw more than their fair share of action.

“Hopefully they are all off to new and appreciative owners and can live out their days on more peaceful pastures.”

Call for runway health advice

By Tara Murray Brimbank council is calling for information on health impacts from the proposed third runway at Melbourne Airport to be released at the earliest opportunity. Cr Virginia Tachos raised a notice of motion at a recent council meeting saying that residents, especially those in Keilor, continue to be concerned about the impact of the runway.

The council will write to Australian Pacific Airports Corporation chief executive Lyell Strambi requesting that Melbourne Airport commences early engagement with the Brimbank community regarding the major development plan for the proposed third

runway and commits to releasing health impact assessment reports at the earliest opportunity to enable the community to consider and digest the findings.

Cr Tachos said the runway goes to the heart of community concerns.

“Mainly the impact on the health and wellbeing of people impacted by increased noise,” she said.

“We know that Melbourne Airport has reported its commitment to building the third runway … And announced its preference for a north -south alignment.

“The Brimbank community remains concerned about the probable impacts on the city, in particular the Keilor community.

“Of major concern is the anticipated noise impacts and the resulting health impacts associated with the proposed runway.”

Cr Tachos said when the plan and relevant documents are released, there will be a lot of information to take in. She said 60 days to provide feedback wasn’t enough.

“It’s very unreasonable,” she said. “Sixty days is simply not enough time are community members to disgust the information and form a view.

“It’s fair and reasonable to expect the Melbourne Airport in good faith to release health assessment reports early before they release the MDP, as we can understand them and consult our community.”

Cr Jae Papalia said the runway was already causing anxiety among those in the community. She said the pandemic, which had seen changed conditions for both residents and the airport, made it important to inform residents properly.

“It is hard to understand what the noise impacts and things are now and we’re in a COVID environment and have been for such a significant time,” she said.

“When it’s not front of mind, and you’re not experiencing it every day you tend to forget what that means.

“I think the MPD consultation period is not enough, it takes time to digest. This could potentially affect children.”

United has a new home Western United remains committed to its partnership with Caroline Springs George Cross despite announcing a new tenancy partnership with the Essendon Football Club.

United has been based at City Vista Recreation Reserve in Fraser Rise, the home of the Georgies, since the club was formed.

United announced last Monday that it would move the club’s administration staff and A-League team to the Essendon Hangar in Tullamarine. Western United chief executive Chris Pehlivanis said Western United’s core values matched those of Essendon.

“Our club has grown enormously over a short period of time and as a result, we needed to explore all options to accommodate both our staff and our players and their increasing high-performance needs.

“To be able to utilise the world class facilities

at The Hangar and bring our team together was a really attractive solution for us while we build our permanent home in Tarneit.”

Mr Pehlivanis said the club remained committed to its existing partnership with the George Cross. The club’s academy program will continue to operate out of that facility as well as the future women’s football program.

“Whilst we’ve had a need to expand, we have also been able to strengthen our partnership with George Cross,” he said.

“We’ve been with George Cross from the beginning– many fans will fondly remember being at this venue for our first practice match – and we will continue to have a presence there long into the future.”

The academy teams will play home games at George Cross throughout the Victorian NPL competition.

STAY INFORMED As my Mayoral term comes to an end, I’d like to take the opportunity to reflect on the past 12 months and to acknowledge the community I’m honoured to represent.

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, I’m very proud that my fellow Councillors and I were able to continue to advocate for our community, plan for the future of our city, and reach some exciting milestones.

A highlight was securing State Government funding and land commitment to start the new Melton Hospital after years of advocacy, supported by our passionate community.

We also succeeded in stopping the toxic West Gate Tunnel soil from being dumped in Ravenhall after a rigorous campaign.

I’m particularly proud of Council’s budget this year which included our highest value capital works program ever – a much-needed investment for our fast-growing city!

We also continued our support for businesses hard-hit by lockdowns, offering expert advice and support, rate relief, outdoor dining infrastructure, and ‘Open for Business’ promotion.

It was great to see major progress on our state-of-the-art Cobblebank Stadium and on the MacPherson Park redevelopment, as well as the opening of the Melton Central Community Centre, and Eynesbury Early Learning Centre.

It has indeed been a momentous year, and these are just some of the highlights.

Coburn Ward with Cr Ashleigh Vandenberg It’s been wonderful to see our city slowly come back to life as lockdown restrictions ease across Victoria. Much of this newfound freedom is based on increasing vaccination levels, and I’m thrilled to see our community rates growing steadily.

Last month, Council adopted its Council and Wellbeing Plan 20212025, which will drive service, program, and infrastructure development over the next four years. I look forward to working with the community and key stakeholders to bring this exciting vision for our city to life.

Within the City of Melton, around 92 per cent of eligible residents have received their first shots, and 62 per cent have received both, so I’d like to thank residents for their proactiveness in getting vaccinated.

Park masterplan updated, again

Brimbank council passed a draft Sydenham Park Master Plan Addendum at its recent council meeting, with updated plans for the area.

Several plans and community consultation have occurred across almost 20 years.

shared user path, proposed locations for a new lookout, seating, signs, gates, fencing, bins and drinking fountain and timeframes of grassland restoration.

The plan includes two sporting fields, which was a point of contention among councillors.

Cr Bruce Lancashire raised an alternative motion which included an additional sports

field.

He said the area could quite easily accommodate an extra sports field. He said the community was calling out for extra sports ground.

But the motion only gained the support of three other councillors.

Cr Viriginia Tachos said that with every additional sports ground, there is also need for parking.

Friends of Sydenham Park’s Neil Hunichen said the group had wanted a third sporting field at the park, but it wasn’t a major loss in the overall scheme of things.

“It’s not the outcome we were hoping for,” he

said.

“In 2004 the plan had as many as seven sporting fields and the community was very supportive of it.”

Mr Hunichen was thrilled with the rest of the plan, including not carving up the golf course and keeping Robertson’s Homestead where it is.

He said the group was hoping they would start to see some development at the site in the near future.

“There’s been a lot of consultations, but nothing has been done,” he said. “In 2004 they said that it would take 25 years for something to happen, so maybe it might happen by then.”

Afghan refugees seeking homes AMES Australia has appealed for anyone with a rental property in Wyndham or St Albans to open their hearts to refugees from Afghanistan.

The not-for-profit organisation provides English training, employment services, community engagement and settlement support to migrants, refugees and asylum seekers.

AMES spokesperson Laurie Nowell said that almost 2000 Afghan refugees have arrived in Victoria, as a result of the airlift out of Kabul in August. Overall, tens of thousands of Afghans have fled the country since the Taliban stepped back into power, after the United States withdrew its troops.

Australia is taking in Afghan refugees under its national humanitarian visa program.

Mr Nowell said that AMES was assisting many of the Afghan refugees in Victoria searching for permanent rental housing.

“They have come out of hotel quarantine and are being housed in short-term accommodation – mostly units that would normally be used by international students,” he said.

“About 15-20 per cent of them are seeking to settle in the west around Werribee and Wyndham and St Albans, where there are already established communities of Afghanis.

“The majority are families – some of them up to 10 people – so they are seeking large-ish family homes.”

Mr Nowell said that the COVID pandemic was making it difficult for the refugees to find rental homes, with the market in the west facing

strong demand from tenants at the moment.

“There is an added complication because some (of the refugees) do not have full ID documentation – making it more difficult to get a real estate agent to lease a home,” Mr Nowell.

Reza (not his real name), who recently arrived in Melbourne from Afghanistan with his extended family, is hoping to find a rental house in Werribee or nearby.

“We are very grateful to have found a safe place in Australia and we want to move into our own home,” Reza said.

“My parents and my siblings and I want to live close to Werribee where we have friends living and where I hope to find a job.”

Keilor and Taylors Hill homeowners selling properties between July and September were among the big winners in the last quarter, according to new Real Estate Institute of Victoria data.

The latest figures for the September quarter showed that the median house price in metropolitan Melbourne had increased by six per cent on the previous quarter.

In Brimbank, it was a mixed bag with a number of suburbs recording good results, while the median house price fell in other suburbs.

In Keilor, the median house price rose 16.2 per cent in the last quarter with the median house price now $1,150,000.

Neighbouring suburbs Keilor Park and Keilor Downs also recorded higher median price increases than the Melbourne average.

Taylors Hill was the other big winner, with the median house sale price increasing by 15.5 per cent.

The median house price in Taylors Hill is now $885,000.

Caroline Springs (9.9 per cent), Kealba (9.5 per cent), Braybrook (8.5 per cent) all had substantial growth.

Derrimut and Taylors Lakes also had a median price increase higher than the Melbourne median increase.

Sydenham, which recorded a 22 per cent increase in the June quarter, only increased by 2.6 per cent.

The median price also fell by 4.4 per cent in Deer Park, 1.9 per cent in St Albans, 1.3 per cent in Sunshine West and 0.5 per cent in Fraser Rise.

St Albans man charged as part of police gang operation A St Albans man and a Hillside man were among 31 people who were arrested as part of an operation targeting street gangs and serious violent crime in Melbourne’s north-west.

Uniformed and specialist police from the Brimbank and Melton Divisional Offender Management Team, Gang Crime Squad, Brimbank, Melton and Wyndham Crime Investigation Units saturated the area each night between Wednesday and Saturday last week, as part of Operation Alliance.

Police arrested and charged 31 people for a range of offences, including breach of bail,

armed robbery, aggravated burglary, drug trafficking and theft related offences.

They conducted 50 bail compliance checks, with 16 breaches detected, while police checked in with 42 people with known gang affiliations across Wyndham and Brimbank.

On the first night of the operation, police intercepted a vehicle on the Melton Highway.

Police said a quantity of methamphetamine and over $15,000 in cash was found in a car, along with numerous phones and other items.

Two men, a 29-year-old and a 28-year-old, were charged with trafficking a commercial

quantity of drugs and dealing with the proceeds of crime.

The 29-year-old St Albans man was also charged with committing an indictable offence while on bail and possessing a prohibited weapon. They were both remanded in custody.

On Thursday night, a vehicle was stolen during an alleged aggravated carjacking.

The vehicle was observed by police shortly after. Police tracked the vehicle to Taylors Hill throughout the evening and deployed tyre-deflation tactics, eventually damaging the front right tyre.

Two men were arrested after allegedly attempting to flee the scene, with a 19-year-old Hillside man was charged with theft of motor vehicle and other serious offences.

North West Metro Division three, Brimbank and Melton, Superintendent David Jones said work in the area doesn’t stop.

“We know operations such as these significantly improve community safety and reduce serious and violent offences being committed in the area,“ he said.

A needle-phobic gets the jab Star Weekly reporter Michaela Meade has never been a fan of needles. She shares her experience of getting the COVID jab.

I’m one of those people who has always dreaded needles. Despised them, even.

Get that sharp, pointy thing away from me, please.

Logically, I understand that what’s in them is helping me to stay healthy and safe.

But emotionally speaking, it’s a really sharp thing being poked into my arm. No, thank you.

That’s why I was very surprised to find myself excited when they announced all the developments for a new vaccine last year. The COVID-19 vaccine.

This new virus has upheaved a lot of people’s lives over the past 22-plus months.

And sadly, it’s taken people’s lives.

I count myself as very lucky to have not lost a loved one due to COVID-19.

But I read all the stories. I sat in front of my laptop every day last year listening to Premier Daniel Andrews report the amount of cases we had that day, and how many people lost their fight.

I isolated myself from friends and family, which was made even harder this year when I moved out of home. I obeyed all the rules, did all the hand washing, and wore the mask required.

I still do, because Victoria is still getting this thing under control. And unfortunately, it’s not over.

It’s a nasty virus, and being an asthmatic, I don’t want to risk contracting it.

So I also waited patiently for the chance to book in for my jab. The pointy needle. That dreaded thing.

I’ll have you know that no amount of logic can outweigh the anxiety a needle-phobic person feels when they’re waiting for their name to be called to receive an injection.

But I distracted myself with some social media scrolling, took some deep breaths to calm myself, and focused on what I was going to gain from this little sting.

When I’m fully vaccinated, I’ll be able to see my grandparents again, for the first time in so many months.

Receiving your COVID vaccine can be a daunting experience when you are needle-phobic.

I’ll be able to see more than one friend at once, including those outside a 15-kilometre radius I had never pondered before 2020.

I’ll be able to have my mum over for dinner to meet my kitten.

I’ll be able to see my dad when he can come down from Sydney, so we can finally celebrate both of our birthdays, plus Father’s Day.

But it’s only possible if I get the vaccine.

If you’re also needle-phobic, it helps a lot to tell the person that you’re petrified.

My nurse, Jane, was very lovely about it.

Talked to me throughout, made me laugh, and told me to take a deep breath in – “a little sting here” – and a deep breath out.

And that was it. She gave me a lollipop and I

was on my way.

I understand being hesitant to get an injection. I also know the frustration of having an appointment snapped out from under you.

But please persist.

To my fellow needle-phobics: it’s a small, two-second sting, but I promise it’s worth it.

Bring on the second dose.

Shining a light on spooky haunts From the inner suburbs to the rural areas, Melbourne’s north and west is rife with tales of haunted houses, ghosts and spirit sightings. As Halloween approaches, Alesha Capone explores the underbelly of spectres and otherworldly presences which may, or may not, lurk just beyond the fabric of our own world.

hile the spooky and the supernatural is often explored by films, television and books, many Melburnians have their own real-life tales about encounters with “the other side”.

There are plenty of well-known sites in the north and west which are reportedly haunted.

Among them, the Altona, Eynesbury and Point Cook homesteads, Werribee Mansion, some historic Williamstown hotels, the former Sunbury Asylum, the old Greenvale Sanatorium, Geelong Gaol and Pentridge Prison in Coburg.

Lantern Ghost Tours founder Jacqueline Travaglia knows many of the uncanny tales and urban legends connected to these places as her company conducts tours at several of the locations.

Jacqueline names Williamstown, where Lantern Ghost Tours is based, as the site of the scariest ghost story in the north and west.

Three former “ladies of the night” haunt the lane next to the Titanic Theatre Restaurant in Nelson Place, she says.

“They are extremely active.

“Some people complain of burnt sinuses from the smell, as well others have felt scratches on their throats and pinches on their bottoms.”

When asked about some of the lesser-known haunted places of the western suburbs, Jacqueline says Footscray “has a rich and interesting history with more than its fair share of ghosts, especially along the Maribyrong River”.

“Illegal gambling, crime families and old piggery have provided a lot of interesting ghost stories,” she says.

Jacqueline says one of her favourite ghost stories involves the Chirnside family.

Brothers Thomas and Andrew Chirnside came from Scotland to Australia in 1839.

They built Werribee Mansion and the Point Cook Homestead.

Unusual occurrences such as objects moving about and ghostly figures being sighted have been reported at the mansion, while the homestead is believed to be haunted by a young boy, the former gamekeeper and a lady who wears Victorian clothing.

“Thomas was only in his 20s when he set off to Australia,” Jacqueline says. “He managed to create a huge pastoral empire and created a name for himself breeding racehorses.

“He was later joined by his brother Andrew and his cousin Mary, who he wanted to marry.

“In a strange twist of events, his brother Andrew married Mary.

“Even stranger, the three remained friends.”

Tragically, Thomas Chirnside committed suicide with a shotgun in 1887 and his body was found in the laundry of Werribee Mansion.

The mansion is not the only haunted site in Werribee. Stories submitted by Star Weekly readers tell of a number of eerie occurrences in the area.

Miranda says she used to live in a Market Road house and would see a mysterious elderly man in the kitchen and hallway.

“My daughters started seeing a little girl called Jane they used to play outside with her and I saw her on their swing smiling,” she says. “The ghosts never hurt us but they were always there.”

Nickola says that while living in a Margaret Street house, her young daughter would talk in different languages and would not sleep in a certain room.

“She would wake up hysterical through the night, at first it was a woman in white long dress,” Nickola says.

Her daughter – who is now a teenager – and the lady eventually became friends and would chat to each other, but this ceased when the family moved to a new house.

Western suburbs resident Jodie, a fourth-generation psychic, paranormal investigator and spiritual advisor, is a font of information about Melbourne ghosts.

Her business, Outback Medium, does space clearings and cleansings of houses with phantom presences.

Jodie also works with Paranormal Seekers Victoria, Chasers of the Paranormal and Geelong Gaol Ghost Tours.

She says the former prison, which opened in 1853 and closed in 1991, has one of the highest

levels of spiritual activity she has encountered.

Jodie names the Clarkefield Coach and Horses Inn near Sunbury, a bluestone hotel built in 1857, as another highly-haunted site.

The hotel is thought to be haunted by several spirits, including a Chinese man who died in the stables after a fight, an Irishman who was shot nearby and a young girl seen crying in the toilets.

Jodie says that in Wyndham, the most common places where she has encountered ghosts – apart from private homes – were the Werribee Mansion, Point Cook RAAF base, Point Cook Homestead, the bridge on Duncans Road crossing over the freeway to Werribee South and The Racecourse Hotel.

“Over the years I have had to go and do some investigations in people’s homes, due to the amount of activity in the Werribee area,” she says. “I quite often will walk into a place, and I can feel the history of what has happened in Werribee.”

Jodie says that her advice to anyone

concerned about, but not threatened by, ghostly activity at their home was to ask the spirit kindly to leave.

“If they are comfortable with the spirit, tell them that they are welcome to stay if they don’t bother them,” Jodie says.

“We all have passed loved ones that hang around us protecting and guiding us.”

Jodie says if the activity was ongoing and involved something like objects moving around, that the property might need to be cleansed and “saged” by an expert in the paranormal field.

“I wouldn’t recommend you do this on your own, if you don’t know what you are doing as you could accidentally make things worse or even aggravate the spirit more,” she says .

The consistent resilience and hard work of the staff and students at Victoria University Secondary College has been reflected in the remarkable results for 2021’s NAPLAN results for year 7 and 9 students.

Brewer shocked by medal win Caroline Springs gun Stephen Brewer thought he was too old to be winning league best and fairest awards.

At 37, Brewer had been taking his footy year by year for the last five years or so, aware his career is coming towards its end.

So when he was recently named the Western Region Football League’s Barry Priest Medalist for the best player in division 1, he was shocked.

“I’m in shock to win one at my age,” he said.

“I had gone close before, but to win one at my age in a different format and not being there in person, it was a bit of a surprise.

“Not many people win one at my age. “I’m very grateful to win it.”

Brewer was at home with his partner when the online count started. With a number of messages, his feed of the awards started to lag.

Having hit the front in the second last round, Brewer knew he didn’t have the best game in the final round.

“I wasn’t confident of getting votes in the final round,” he said. “It wasn’t my best game.

“Anthony Eames [Spotswood coach] always makes it difficult for me. I did okay.

“I couldn’t remember the other results.”

The win is Brewer’s first league best and fairest win. He came fourth in 2019 in his first season with Caroline Springs, having finished second in 2014 when he was at Greenvale.

Brewer said this year was much better than 2019, which was derailed by an injury which

left him unable to train much.

Brewer is the first person to admit that he didn’t think he would still be playing now.

“When I was finishing up in the VFL, the AFL doctor with the club said you won’t be playing on like Dustin Fletcher [who played AFL until he was 40].

“Your body is beat up. I’d had hip and knee injuries.

“Whenever you’re over 30, people are always quick to retire you. I’ve gone into most years, the last five or six years, thinking it could be the last.

“The end can come quickly. A bad injury and then you can fall off the cliff quickly.”

Brewer credits his fitness and knowing what his body can do, as key reasons why he has continued to play quality football.

Brewer said he had loved playing at Caroline Springs in recent years, but wasn’t 100 per cent sure what his playing future held.

“Caroline Springs has been so welcoming,” he said. “Coming across as a 35-year-old who didn’t know anyone and was considering retirement at the time.

“I would love to keep coming back. I live and work in Bayside, so I have a big decision to make.”

Nagpal is bowling up a bright future on the field Holly Nagpal is a quietly spoken, yet fiercely determined 15-year-old who has an amazing passion for cricket.

Her passion was born from her parents, Nick and Sangeeta, and her younger brother Harrith.

“I tried many sports as a young person growing up but from the moment I picked up a cricket bat, something inside me just clicked,” she said. “My family comes from India, where cricket is a religion. My father is my number one supporter and coach. He has been with me since I first picked up a bat.”

At the age of nine, Nagpal joined her younger brother’s cricket club, Burnside-Springs United. She quickly fell made new friends and learned how to play the game.

“I loved the challenges our coaches set me to improve.”

Nagpal, who is a medium fast bowler, won the coach’s award in her first season and in her words which made her even more motivated.

“It is the beauty in the run up and the action of bowling that I love about becoming a bowler.

“I am tested a lot more with my batting, but I am up for the challenge.”

Nagpal made her first representative side in her second season of competitive cricket.

She represented the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association in an under-12’s tournament.

So successful was her debut in representative cricket, Nagpal has continued to be selected in representative teams from the Youth Premier League under-14’s with the Western Spirit to the Youth Super Series under-14’s with the Melbourne Renegades.

In 2018-19, Nagpal was selected in the School Sports Victoria under-12 team that travelled to Western Australia, with her team finishing third.

Nagpal’s bowling statistics are impressive.

She took her first hat trick in the under-14 boy’s team at Burnside Springs United.

She made her women’s cricket debut with Sydenham-Hillside, before moving to Victorian Premier Cricket club Essendon Maribyrnong Park Ladies Her best figures came in her first season with EMP taking 5-20 from nine overs playing in their second XI. Nagpal was selected in the Victorian team for the under-15 national championships when she was 12 years old.

who all play for Essendon Maribyrnong Park Ladies Cricket Club.

“I not only watch what they do on the ground but what they do off it to prepare to be the best they can. I was lucky enough to be selected in the first XI and played a few games with them.

“What a better way to do it than work and practice hard as I watch these amazing role models close up. My aim is to represent Australia one day.”

Nagpal has a very mature approach to her sport, one that has no doubt been moulded by her family, her coaches, and the Maribyrnong

Sports Academy (MSA) where she has been on a sporting and accelerated learning scholarship since year seven.

A typical week during cricket season includes strength and conditioning training three times a week and these sessions can also include meetings with the nutritionist and sports psychologist. The number of cricket training sessions a week depends on what time of the year it is.

“We work with medium weights to improve our core strength, upper and lower bodies,” she said. “We work on resistance type training to improve our power base. Conditioning sessions also include interval running and sprint sessions.”

However, it hasn’t all been plain sailing for Nagpal, with a stress fracture in her shin causing her to miss games.

She urges all young athletes to be open and honest with coaches, doctors and family about how you are feeling.

This year Nagpal has been selected in the Cricket Victoria under-16 female emerging player program.

While her passion for cricket is infectious, her focus is purely on learning her craft in a very process-oriented manner.

“Every time I pick up a ball or a bat, I learn something about myself that I can use to improve my skills. My school work is equally important to me.”

Nagpal is the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club, October Don Deeble Sports Star Award winner. Her award is sponsored by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, Strathmore Community Bank and the Deer Park Club.
