Creating tiny bookworms Children at Eynesbury kindergarten have been given the opportunity to participate in a new reading program. The Little Readers program is a Resimax Group initiative and is “a great opportunity for kindergarteners to get acquainted with reading before they head to school,” a spokesperson for the group said. Currently, there are no reading programs in the government curriculum for kindergarten, so Resimax wanted to work with the local Eynesbury kindergarten to “help foster avid little readers in the community.” The group has donated 80 books and ‘Little Readers’ library bags to the kindergarten as part of the program, which encourages children to start reading at a more advanced level usually seen in primary school. During lockdown, teacher and nominated supervisor Janet Heaney delivered books and book bags to the kindergarteners at home. Sarah Oliver

Ravenhall asbestos plan By Tara Murray Cleanaway wants to accept asbestos at the Melbourne Regional Landfill (MRL) in Ravenhall. The company is seeking approval from the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) to amend its licence to permit the receival and disposal of asbestos waste at the site. Currently, MRL receives about one million tonnes annually of putrescible and solid inert waste, comprising household and commercial waste and construction waste. The landfill can only accept waste as defined in its EPA licence.

In a statement, the company said that the application will support the Sustainability Victoria report ’Asbestos Disposal Management Plan’ released earlier this year which identified that asbestos disposal facilities within Victoria are limited. “Our application to the EPA for a licence amendment requires a detailed asbestos management plan to ensure our compliance procedures for managing asbestos waste will be robust and safe for our staff, local community, and the environment,” the statement said. “Currently, there are 27 landfills licensed to receive domestic and/or commercial asbestos

in Victoria. “Of these, 22 are regional and five are located in metropolitan areas and are approaching full capacity in coming years. “Cleanaway is the leader in waste management and has the expertise to receive and handle asbestos waste. We have the largest waste collection network in Victoria and can provide a solution for this identified need.” The statement said the material would be transported by truck via the Western Freeway, Christies, Ballarat and Hopkins roads. Any customer looking to take asbestos to the site would need to submit the required

documentation to the environmental team for assessment and approval before a single load is allowed onto site. “The disposal area will be within an EPA approved landfill cell that will have a dedicated asbestos disposal section,” Cleanaway said. “When the approved load arrives, the truck will offload the wrapped load at the nominated disposal point.” The deposited waste will then be covered with 300mm of cover soil. Cleanaway will host several community information webinars in the next few weeks to inform the community of its plans. Details: http://ow.ly/pFsJ50GFL7Z

Council facilities reopen

Pitch an idea for the budget

Mayor and Deputy Mayor elected

Do you have a great initiative or project idea that you think should be included in the Council budget?

Introducing your new Mayor and Deputy Mayor. Councillor Goran Kesic has been elected the City of Melton Mayor for 2021/22 and Cr Lara Carli elected Deputy Mayor at a council meeting last week.

In line with the State Government’s roadmap, many of our Council services and facilities have reopened.

You’ll also have the option to present and discuss your ideas in person.

Melton Civic Centre, Melton Recycling Facility, Melton and Caroline Springs libraries, community centres, and CS Gallery are now open. We want to ensure that our facilities are safe places for our community to visit, and we ask anyone attending Melton City Council operated facilities to ensure you comply with public health directions. Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or proof of vaccination exemption will be required to access non-essential services. COVID-19 vaccination is not required to access our essential services including Maternal & Child Health Services, immunisations, making a payment, and drop offs at the Melton Recycling Facility. For more information on individual Council services and facilities as well as requirements, visit melton.vic.gov.au/COVID19

We’re starting to prepare for the 2022/23 Budget and we’d like to know what you think will make a difference to the local community.

You can submit your idea to Council up until 28 November at conversations.melton.vic.gov.au/ budgetidea

Mayor Cr Kesic is serving his second term on Council and was previously Deputy Mayor. To get in touch with your ward councillors, visit melton.vic.gov.au/councillors

Cambridge Ward with Cr Steve Abboushi I’m certain everyone breathed a sigh of relief when the State Government further eased COVID restrictions, opening our communities and reconnecting metro Melbourne and regional Victoria after strict lockdowns. Now, it’s important we stay safe by following the guidelines around wearing masks, social distancing, getting vaccinated and checking in wherever we go. It’s also important to support our local businesses—the retailers, restaurants, cafes, and services that have done it tough. Business is at the heart of our community and they are now relying on our help to rebuild their livelihoods, and breathe life back into our vibrant City. Two years ago, I ran a campaign supporting the opening of Kmart at CS Square, garnering a lot of support from residents. So, it was a pleasure

to attend the official opening of Kmart Caroline Springs last week and welcome a retailer that’s creating 130 jobs for our community. It’s also a pleasure to advise that a number of roads projects were approved for Cambridge Ward in this year’s Council budget, including installing traffic lights on Caroline Springs Boulevard at The Crossing and Rockbank Middle Road; and on Taylors Road at Westwood Drive, Sinclairs Road and Plumpton Road. Great news for our community and a wonderful example of how Council works hard to improve the safety and wellbeing of our residents. Please feel free to contact me for Cambridge Ward or Council related issues on 0437 231 680 or steve.abboushi@melton.vic.gov.au, or like my Facebook page @ AbbsMelton

It was a great honour to be elected the new City of Melton Mayor last week, and I would like to sincerely thank my fellow Councillors for putting their trust in me. I look forward to leading this Council over the next 12 months, alongside our new Deputy Mayor Cr Lara Carli, and working collectively to create a better future for our whole community. As your Mayor, I’m dedicated to protecting what we all love about the City of Melton including the family-friendly neighbourhoods, and the beautiful reserves and parks we’re so lucky to have in our backyard. Being one of Australia’s fastest growing areas, our municipality needs infrastructure that keeps pace with population growth and meets your needs. Together with Council, I will advocate to the State and Federal governments to invest in key projects such as upgrading the Western and Melton highways, electrifying the Melton line, and the timely delivery of the Melton Hospital. Our city is a place full of opportunity and as we recover from the impacts of COVID-19, it’s major projects like these that will help build commercial investment, transform the local economy, and create thousands of much-needed local jobs. I’m proud to be Mayor of this city and I look forward to representing Council and the community over the coming year. Please feel free to contact me on 0437 241 436 or goran.kesic@melton.vic.gov.au regarding any Council issues.

COVID widens service shortfalls The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the already existing homelessness and mental health service problems in Brimbank and Melton, according to a local homelessness network. Western Homelessness Network co-ordinator Sarah Langmore said the pandemic had caused a wide ranging of impacts on local residents. “For some people who were experiencing homeless, it was a better time for them, especially at the start of COVID with the Centrelink payments,” she said. “But then there was a 10-fold increase in

staying at hotels, but they couldn’t house everyone. It highlighted what groups were already struggling. There’s a lot of people living in unstable housing and the government is acutely aware of this.” Ms Langmore said many people were suffering homelessness for the first time. She said in Brimbank, the network was seeing a lot more single people finding themselves homeless. She said while many people had found accommodation during the pandemic, many now had nowhere to go. “They couldn’t house everyone,” she said.

“Many are leaving hotels and not having anywhere to stay. Some are back in overcrowded rooming houses and others are going back on the streets.” Ms Langmore said that mental health issues would only be exacerbated by the pandemic, with many people developing mental health problems when they become homeless. “Even those in hotels there were isolated,” she said. “It was huge and the uncertainty of what is happening next. “They didn’t know how long they would have accommodation for. People experiencing

homelessness find it so hard to find work or education, the most basic things are in question. “It really does eat at them.” Ms Langmore said both state and federal governments had been looking to address social housing shortages. “The Big Housing Build is a fantastic program,” she said. “We welcome the announcement but there is still a long way to go. In the west there are still 12,000 people on the waiting list. “COVID really highlighted the inadequacies.”

We will pause to remember them sacrifice of the men and women who have served our nation,” secretary Carl Wright said. “We have a great response and support from the Bacchus Marsh Community,” he said. The service will be held on the Village Green at 10.45am for an 11am start and will also be recorded live for those who can’t attend in-person. Melton RSL secretary Andrew Jeynes confirmed they will be holding a service at the Melton cenotaph. It will be limited in numbers and preference will be given to ex-service men and women and their families to attend. All services will be adhering to strict COVID restrictions on the day, with Melton requiring people to be double vaccinated and scan QR

codes at entry points. Caroline Springs RSL have decided not to hold a service. President Peter Burquest said “due to COVID requirements we are unable to perform our usual service for Remembrance Day”. There will be a brief laying of a wreath and a recital of the Ode for our fallen, but Mr Burquest said the club is “not able to invite the public and provide the protection required”. RSL clubs around Melton and Moorabool areas are preparing for Remembrance Day next week. As restrictions ease for Victoria, many RSL clubs are able to hold a service in person, an occasion not possible for most clubs last year. Ballan RSL president Rick Campey said they have been approved to hold a service for up to 500 people. “It’s going to be great that we can hold it at the cenotaph. It’s a better location and certainly where it should be held.” The service will start at 11am at the cenotaph, and feature speeches from the school captains of Ballan and St Brigid’s primary schools. Bacchus Marsh RSL is also holding an in-person service “to honour the service and

The Melton recycling facility will undergo an upgrade after the council appointed a contractor last week. The stage two upgrade will save $300,000 a year in state legislated landfill levies and divert tonnes of materials from landfill. A new drive-through recovery building will be part of the upgrade, with a resale shop at the front of the facility, designed to encourage people to drop off reusable items that are in good condition. With works expected to deliver a return on investment in four years, councillor Kathy Majdik said it will make an important difference in resource recovery. “Recovering more reusable items at the recycling facility will mean we have more low cost, quality second-hand items for our community at the new resale shop,” Cr Majdik said. The project will also see a new sorting shed and loading tunnel for bulk haul transporting, as well as additional resource recovery and storage facilities, and improvements to internal and external roads. “The impact of this project will be significantly less material going to landfill, which is critical in a fast-growing city like ours,” Cr Majdlik said. In addition to the upgrades to facilities, funds from the resale shop will go back into funding programs for people with disabilities. The project is in partnership with the Victorian government and council and is expected to begin in February, 2022, with completion by May, 2023.

Kesic elected new Melton mayor By Sarah Oliver

After accepting his appointment as mayor, Cr Kesic said he is “truly honoured to be elected”. “This is something I will not take for granted”, he said. “The position of mayor holds a special place in the hearts and minds of so many in this city. It’s not about the person that wears the chain, it is the people you represent and the deep history that goes along with it.” Cr Kesic said while it’s important to “modernise and progress” as a council, it’s also important to “protect the history and traditions that have been upheld” by the many

Councillor Goran Kesic has been elected as Melton’s new mayor for 2021-22. Cr Kesic was sworn into the position at a council meeting last Thursday, where he also made a speech as outgoing deputy mayor. Cr Kesic thanked his fellow council members and outgoing mayor Kathy Majdlik, saying it was “an unusual year” but that it was “great” working with them. Reflecting on Cr Majdlik’s term, he said “you are leaving big shoes to fill, but they are pointed in the right direction”.

mayors before him. “Thanks once again to everyone for their support to date and I look forward to working with you all as we work collectively for a better future for the people of our municipality.” Filling Cr Kesic’s shoes will be third term councillor Lara Carli who said it is an “honour to be elected as deputy mayor for our wonderful and vibrant city for the next 12 months”. Every councillor offered their congratulations to both the mayor and deputy mayor, as well as reflecting on Cr Majdlik’s term as mayor for 2020-21.

Pictures pop up of Melbourne’s west A new range of vintage-inspired posters celebrating the western suburbs are popping up on walls across Melbourne. After decades of painting, drawing and photography, Seaholme artist Kerrie Gottliebsen was on holidays when the idea to concentrate on the new art form occurred. “I was enjoying a weekend away at Phillip Island when I noticed a vintage Phillip Island poster on the wall of an Airbnb and wondered why the west didn’t have its own range of posters.” she said. “I began taking photos of my favourite local

spots around Altona and Seaholme. That led to Williamstown, and then Footscray, West Footscray, Newport, Yarraville and Spotswood. “More recently I visited Albion and Sunshine to photograph the John Darling and Son Flour Mill and the Sunshine Silos.” Gottliebsen said there had been a really good reaction to her posters and now people were asking her to celebrate their favourite suburban locations. She said that where she could, she was delivering them by hand to prevent delays

with delivery services. “I’m really grateful to Facebook pages like the Inner West Women’s Hub, Newport and surrounds and Brimbank community pages which have given me lots of encouragement.” As well as the posters, eight tea towels designs are about to join the collection, as well as a new range of postcards. “Fortunately there are many more designs I’d like to work on so I’m really excited.” Details: www.kerriegottiebsen.com or at @kerriegottliebsenart on Instagram and Facebook.

Moorabool shire is calling out to local businesses and residents to assist in creating a new economic development strategy, and a separate visitor economy strategy. The aim of the consultations will be to identify opportunities to maximise economic, tourism and local job prospects. Consultation workshops and a survey will be conducted with the idea that “needs and opportunities related to economic development and the visitor economy, are often intertwined,” the shire’s website read. Moorabool-based businesses (including tourism), the wider community and key stakeholders are being encouraged to take part and have their say by attending virtual workshops. The council has appointed Urban Enterprise to collaborate with both strategies to ensure feedback from businesses and the broader community are heard. Moorabool’s population is expected to increase in the coming years, with Victorians venturing further out of the city and into growth areas. The largest contributor to annual economic output in Moorabool is construction, representing 18.76 per cent of the total output of $2.417 billion. The second biggest contributor to the economy is rental, hiring and real estate services, followed by agriculture, forestry and fishing. Tourism output in Moorabool is estimated at $78.627 million annually, or 3.3 per cent of the total annual output. The first strategy workshop will commence on Tuesday, November 16, with the following five workshops to run until Monday, November 29. The business and community survey is available to complete until November 30.

A new mental health and wellbeing hub has been running successfully in Melton for the last three weeks. Supported by the Victorian government, Melbourne-based organisation cohealth has established 20 sites across the state, including Melton, Brimbank, Moonee Valley and Melbourne. The hubs are helping to respond to a range of issues in the community that have risen during the pandemic, including mental health, social and wellbeing needs. cohealth mental health wellbeing coach, Hedley Duhau, has been working in the mental health arm of the organisation for 17 years, 15 of which were focused in Melton. “I know the community in the west well,” he said. “It’s great to be part of this new program that is responding to the impacts of the pandemic.” The program is already seeing referrals from a range of people and backgrounds, including people who have never sought help for their mental health. Others who have found the pandemic to be particularly difficult and exacerbated existing conditions are also getting in touch, with the pandemic having “triggered feelings of anxiety, fear and sadness,” Mr Duhau said. “People have been affected by the pandemic in all sorts of ways,” he said. The hubs are flexible, offering face-to-face sessions onsite, as well as home visits or meet-ups in a café or park. They also offer phone and telehealth appointments. Once a rapport is established over a few sessions, the mental health coaches can start to understand what the person’s needs are and offer referrals to other specialist services. Mr Duhau said: “It could be one session, it could be 10 sessions. Our job is to help them get to where they want to be”.

The program also offers support from peer workers with lived experience of mental ill health in addition to sessions with coaches. Mr Duhau’s advice for anyone who’s mental health has been impacted by the pandemic is to “ask for help, don’t suffer alone”. “If those feelings are continuing over time, if they’re interrupting your daily functioning such as work, relationships and social engagements, then it’s important that you reach out for support,” he said.

“The Mental Health and Wellbeing Hubs are a good starting place.” The hubs are located in areas accessible for those who don’t drive or “struggle to navigate long distances via public transport,” Mr Duhau said. The Melton hub is located at 195 - 209 Barries Road, Melton West and is open Mondays 10am till 4pm and Tuesdays 10am till 1pm. Details: https://www.partnersinwellbeing. org.au/

A lucky Melton West resident has become a multi-millionaire overnight after their syndicate scored a division one win last week. In total, 10 Victorian’s will share the $25 million Oz Lotto prize, with each of them taking home $2,513,105.93. But some are yet to discover their huge win. A spokesperson for The Lott, Lauren Cooney, said they are still waiting on some syndicate members to get in touch. “While we’ll be reaching out to those syndicate members who registered their entries to their player cards, there are some syndicate members who hold unregistered entries and may not yet know they’re part of this winning group,” she said. The winning numbers in Oz Lotto draw 1446 on Tuesday were 38, 25, 31, 1, 23, 8 and 4, while the supplementary numbers were 11 and 44. Ms Cooney said if you purchased a share in the syndicate, she can “think of millions of reasons to check it as soon as possible! If you discover you’re holding a winning share, call The Lott on 131 868 to start the prize claim process!” Sarah Oliver

ALEX MEDANCIC

Mr Medancic, who grew up in Williamstown and has lived in the west his whole life, was quick to give praise to his family. “Families don’t get thanked enough for their sacrifice,” he said. “We aren’t there for big periods of their lives. Karen [his wife] has had to put up with a lot of me grumpy when I’m tired and need sleep. “She has been very supportive.” Mr Medancic said he looks back on his career in five year blocks and sees improvements of how they have been able to better serve the community. He said he loved watching the new generation coming through and had been proud of them and what they were doing in difficult situations. He said he was planning to continue

working for a number of years yet. Ambulance Victoria senior team manager MICA 2 Paul Robertson said Mr Medancic had mentored many paramedics as a clinical instructor during his career and had also been an acting team manager and clinical support officer. “He loves his position as a MICA paramedic and he has a genuine caring heart, particularly for his patients,” he said. “Alex won’t hesitate to offer his assistance to his team manager or anyone else at the time and he is the most reliable person too. “He is avid in supporting fellow MICA paramedics, ALS paramedics and new graduates in their development. He is always making himself available to assist wherever he can.”

For Hillside paramedic Alex Medancic, coming to work each day doesn’t feel like work. Mr Medancic has seen plenty of good and bad over the years as he celebrates 40 years in the Ambulance service, working across the western suburbs. “Time flies in the job I enjoy doing so much,” he said. “It’s one of those jobs that doesn’t feel like coming to work.” Mr Medancic became a volunteer for the St John Ambulance Victoria in Footscray in 1969 and it would be on the job that he would get the idea to work in the emergency services field. He originally commenced with the Melbourne Port Authority as a first aid officer before taking up employment with the then Melbourne Ambulance Service (MAS) in 1981. “I was volunteering at Calder Park Raceway and I thought that it wouldn’t be a bad career. The opportunity to get into the port authority came up and it gave me a bit of change,” he said. “I was there for five and half years and I was interested in becoming an ambulance officer.” Mr Medancic later became a MICA paramedic. He has been based at Sunshine for a number of years. “That was always my goal when I started as a paramedic. It has led me to see some good cases and some very sad cases.” Mr Medancic said it had been a hard job, but there were plenty of good moments along the way. He said he tried not to look back too much. “I went to one job in Kensington in 1997 and this fellow was having a cardiac arrest. His dad came running outside and said to his son: ‘Don’t worry, that’s Alex, he treated me for my heart attack a few years ago’. “So I had treated the father and son for the same medical issue and the dad had remembered me.”

Doctor disqualified over deaths By Sarah Oliver Former director of obstetrics and gynaecology at Bacchus Marsh Hospital, Dr Surinder Parhar, has been disqualified for 12 years after an investigation into a tragic cluster of newborn and stillborn deaths at the hospital. The doctor had nine findings of professional misconduct made against him by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). He has not practised medicine since October, 2015. The Medical Board of Australia, which referred the incidents to the tribunal, said in a statement “the outcome is a reminder that

practitioners must understand and act on their obligations and duty of care to ensure all patients are safe”. The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) investigated 43 registered practitioners who worked at Bacchus Marsh Hospital during the time of these deaths. Following that investigation, Dr Parhar was referred to VCAT in January, 2019, by the Medical Board of Australia. The nine allegations brought against Dr Parhar included failure to ensure there were adequate clinical reviews of 19 perinatal deaths, failure to ensure adequate open disclosure

with patients in relation to 15 perinatal deaths, failure to ensure necessary policies were in place to improve patient safety, inadequate supervision of three junior doctors, failure to improve or maintain his own professional performance, record-keeping deficiencies and deficiencies in his direct clinical care of one patient. Dr Parhar admitted to each allegation and acknowledged each allegation constituted professional misconduct. The tribunal substantiated all nine allegations, finding that Dr Parhar had engaged in professional misconduct in each case. In a statement, the tribunal said the

allegations “constituted repeated professional failings in almost every aspect of Dr Parhar’s role and his responsibilities.” The Medical Board of Australia chair, Dr Anne Tonkin, said “this was a tragic situation.” “While we recognise this decision may be of little comfort for the families who so sadly lost their babies, it highlights the importance of registered medical practitioners, especially those in senior positions, understanding and acting on their responsibilities to ensure safe patient care.” Ahpra chief executive Martin Fletcher said: “This is a strong outcome in response to such tragic and sad events”.

Love is in the air as Melbourne Airport reopens Hugs, celebrations and tears were flowing at Melbourne Airport last week as international flights returned. Many families were reunited for the first time in a couple of years, as rules surrounding arrivals were relaxed. As of Monday, fully vaccinated expats were allowed to enter the country without having to quarantine. People arrived at Tullamarine from all over the world, while many people took to the sky to visit family. Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia were among the airlines to start international fights, which many people took advantage of. Some state borders have also opened in recent weeks, with others set to open before Christmas. It wasn’t just passengers returning to the airport, with many people returning to work or starting new jobs.

‘‘

There is welcome change coming, the turning point is finally here for us

’’

- David Yallouz

Airport Retail Enterprises general manager David Yallouz was among the people celebrating. Across the airport, 30 hospitality venues reopened their doors, including some run by Airport Retail Enterprises. Airport Retail Enterprises’ 15 food and beverage outlets will reopen in a staggered approach. The company is looking to recruit baristas, waiters, chefs and restaurant managers. The company’s brands include ST. ALi, MoVida, Middle Ground by Shane Delia, Urban Provodore, and Brasserie Bread. Just four operated throughout lockdown. The company is looking to hire 200 staff in the coming months. “There is welcome change coming, the turning point is finally here for us,” Mr Yallouz said. “Without doubt, the devastation that COVID-19 has had on our entire operation within Melbourne Airport’s retail food and beverage business has been unparalleled. “Tourism, particularly air travel, was one of the first sectors hit and we expect it to be one of the last industries to emerge. “The staff are looking forward to welcoming back customers and passengers into our outlets to wine and dine in some of Melbourne’s most renowned cafes, restaurants and bars,” he said. Virgin Australia’s Melbourne Lounge was among the areas to reopen as passengers returned. The lounge was refurbished during lockdown and will have a new menu. The airline said booking demand for Virgin Australia Melbourne to Sydney services has increased almost five-fold since the Victorian government roadmap was announced. Bookings for Melbourne toBali services have increased by 143 per cent in the past week. Tara Murray

Mayoral boost for Zonta

EDITORIAL

A group of 24 local, not-for-profit organisations were awarded mayoral funds last week for projects that will better the Melton community. Amongst those selected was women’s group, Zonta. Groups meet across 64 countries to raise funds for women in their communities, and to make items such as birthing kits for women in underdeveloped countries. Melton branch president Sharon Cook said “it’s a really great group of women” “It’s great to be part of an organisation like Zonta because you meet some wonderful people,” she said. When Sharon saw a call out to groups who might qualify for a mayoral fund award, she said she may as well “give it a go” and apply. “I didn’t think we’d get anything,” she said. But Zonta was given a share of the $25,000 towards its nominated project, a mental health first aid training course and supply bags of

The majority of the money will go towards the mental health first aid training project, which is designed to train women to help other women in the community. “It teaches community members how to deal with someone who’s experiencing” a mental illness, she said. MY PLACE AMES Australia chief executive Catherine Scarth was recognised at the Victorian Training Awards last week, receiving the Lynne Kosky Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement. She talks with Alesha Capone. How did you feel to be announced as the recipient of the Lynne Kosky Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement? I was totally shocked and hugely honoured to receive the award. The award was a recognition of the commitment and professionalism of everyone at AMES. It celebrates our world-class programs which everyone at AMES has a hand in delivering.

established vibrant communities. We’ve had some amazing experiences with migrants and refugees settling Melbourne’s west. One that springs to mind is the project in the gardens at Werribee Park – a partnership with Parks Victoria which has recently seen refugee volunteers, and other community groups, volunteer to produce fresh food for vulnerable families during lockdowns.

Did you ever meet Ms Kosky? Not at AMES but before AMES, at The Brotherhood of St Laurence (BSL), when she was minister for education, she was a great supporter of our programs to assist young people at risk of leaving school early.

Given how multicultural the western suburbs are, do you think migration programs will be vital to ensure Australia’s economic recovery from COVID? The west of Melbourne, and particularly Wyndham, is one of the fastest-growing regions in Australia; and one of the most diverse. Migrants and refugees are attracted by existing communities, jobs and the availability of housing. We can see that increased migration will be an important part of Australia’s economic recovery from the COVID pandemic, so places like the west and north will be really important in this process.

What do you enjoy most about your work with AMES? I enjoy meeting people who have come from different parts of the globe and who bring interesting perspectives, cultures and stories. I also enjoy the idea that we at AMES are supporting people to build new lives in Australia – some who are fleeing conflict or persecution but who nevertheless have

You’ve have been at AMES for more than 13 years? I joined AMES in 2008 in a new role leading our community programs and developing a research and policy capacity, which now does amazing work documenting what works and providing evidence-based policy advice to government and others. Before AMES I worked at the BSL in a number of roles, developing social enterprises and running community and education programs. amazingly positive outlooks on life. As these people establish themselves and start to make contributions to society in all sorts of ways our work is helping to build a modern, diverse but cohesive Australia. We do support people who have been through difficult times but I never cease to be amazed and inspired by their resilience and their determination to build

new lives in Australia for themselves and their children. Working at AMES, are you often in the northern and western suburbs? I spend a lot of time in Melbourne’s west and north at our sites and other places. It is where a large proportion of our refugee and migrant clients eventually settle – joining already

What is AMES is working on or towards at the moment? We are currently supporting a large number of Afghan refugees who were part of the airlift out of Kabul in August. Many arrived with just a passport and the clothes they were wearing, so we have been supporting them initially with accommodation, clothing and basic necessities. As they find their feet, this work will transition to support in finding educational and employment pathways as well as connecting them with local communities and the broader society. Shaun Keenan in his Gisborne home studio.

BEHIND THE NEWS

(Damjan Janevski) 255988

A comic idea, turned into reality Shaun Keenan is a self-confessed comic book nerd — and he wears that like a badge of honour. But Shaun doesn’t just read comics, he produces them too as he explained to Oliver Lees.

S

ince starting his own company COMICS2MOVIES in 2007, Shaun’s work has evolved from designing sketches based on movie posters, to creating his own anthology that is currently the number one selling independent comic in Australia. Next year, the Gisborne resident will release a graphic novel adaptation made to accompany the Occupation film franchise, a trilogy of sci-fi films available to viewers on Netflix around the world. “Everytime I talk about it, I can’t help but smile,” he said. “The comic book industry in Australia is not very easy to navigate. I’ve made a lot of mistakes along the way. That’s why I’m really proud of COMICS2MOVIES. “To have reached this point, and to have these things next to my name, it feels like we’re starting to reach that next echelon.” Growing up in Melbourne’s north in the 1980s, Shaun feasted on the classic comic books of Jim Lee from an early age. “I always struggled to read, and I think it was my Mum who first gave me a comic book. I would have been about seven,” he said. “I think being a teenage boy who was into comics, but who also wanted to fit in with the cool kids, I kind of ventured away from it a little bit. “It wasn’t until I was in my late 20s and early 30s that I made a change. “I was working as a store manager at Optus. My wife came up to me and asked what I wanted to do with my life. I remember being a little taken aback. “So I thought about it, and I came to the realisation that I’d kind of just plodded through life and got roles that came to me. “And so I started to think about what I really enjoyed. I have always been a massive movie fan, and so that’s where I came up with the idea of COMICS2MOVIES.” With the backing of his family, Shaun started attending regular comic book conventions.

Shaun Keenan wants to encourage others to forge a career in comic books.

“I was very, very naive,” he said. “It was a pretty barren landscape, but that was exciting because it felt like there was a gap in the market.” As Shaun describes it, the first challenge became learning the ins and outs of what goes into writing a comic book. For example, unlike a novel, which is written with minute detail, comics are shorter in length and captured through individual frames. Another speed bump in Shaun’s grand plan was that he was not a confident drawer. “I can’t draw to save my life, so I usually do the writing,” he said. “Now I have several different artists working and I discovered I had a knack of picking up good talent.” Shaun found the best path forward was to take his knowledge and management skills to seek out talent that could bring his ideas to life. And as he started to build his business from the base up, graphic novels themselves started to enjoy a spike in popularity. Popular sci-fi, fantasy and action film

(Pictures: Damjan Janevski) 255988

producers started to employ graphic novelists to bring script ideas to life. Films such as 300 and The Umbrella Academy were all investing in comics to accompany their releases. Shaun said the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter became a new space for creatives to gain financial backing. Earlier this year, Hollywood star Keanue Reeves launched his own comic series BRZRKR on the platform, and it has since become the most pledged item in the site’s history, with over $1.4 million earned in donations. “Since 2017, the graphic novel industry has increased year-on-year faster than any other printed material,” he said. “You used to only be able to get graphic novels in comic book stores, but now you can get them anywhere. That misconception of it [comics] being just for kids has also been broken.” Therein lies the next exciting challenge for Shaun, as he describes it. Following the success of his original anthology The Xtreme Champion Tournament,

Shaun is now in a position where he can employ Australian artists to get the job done. With the work starting to pile up, Shaun said he’s eager to make his publishing company an avenue for fellow comic book enthusiasts, one that didn’t exist when he was finding his own way in the industry. “I’d really love to do more of that mentoring side,” he said. “There is no clear pathway at the moment, and a lot of talent ends up going overseas. The idea is to be able to retain that talent, and I’ve always prided myself on making sure my artists are paid for their work. “There’s that misconception that when you talk about comics you’re only talking about superheroes. “But what people don’t realise is that comics and graphic novels can be just as diverse as people are from one another.” COMICS2MOVIES’ Occupation graphic novel series is expected in March next year. How good marketing can help a business grow Ian Ash ACC, AInstIB Managing director OrgMent Business Solutions What is marketing? These days the term gets mixed up with public relations, digital marketing, social media etc and so it is not uncommon for many businesses to believe that marketing means a flashy website and/or a social media presence on one or more platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn or Instagram to name just a few. Whilst these mechanisms certainly all have a place, there really is no one size fits all solution here and to be effective, it is important to understand four key things: 1/ What do I want to achieve through my marketing? 2/ What message do I need to send? 3/ What are the most appropriate channels for me to disseminate the message? 4/ What is my budget and expected return on investment? Let’s deal with these in order. For most businesses, the Wikipedia definition of marketing typically applies, that is: “the action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising”. The majority of business owners will enlist marketing to enable more sales and hence income, but there may be other reasons to undertake this such as promotion of an event, build market presence or enhance brand image for example. Regardless of the reason, it is important to quantify the expected outcome in measurable

Marketing should not be considered an expense, rather an investment.

terms so that you can determine whether the marketing initiative(s) is/are successful or not and hence see whether the technique would be useful to continue to use in the future. Knowing what specific message you want to send is actually the most important part of the process and not as easy to do as it may seem. A core concept in marketing is “the hook” which is the bit that’s going to attract the

12 MELTON & MOORABOOL STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 9 November, 2021

(Supplied)

attention in the first place. Since the average attention span for consumers has dropped from 12 to around eight seconds, it is vital that your message is succinct and engaging. Once you have engaged, you would then be looking for the recipient to take some kind of action leading to purchasing your product or service. Next time you watch the adverts on

television, ask yourself whether it is clear whether the next action they require you to take is clear or not. If not, chances are that the advertising won’t be as effective as it should be. Where you place your (effective) marketing message has a dramatic impact on the results you can expect, a bit like throwing good seed on poor soil. This is why it is well worth thinking about where your target audience is most likely to show up and be active. Mum and Dad businesses may well gain traction by posting on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram whereas bigger businesses are more likely to be active on LinkedIn or more public forums like radio and television. Of course posting advertisements online or in print via the Star Newspaper Group should enable widespread visibility of whatever it is you wish to promote as well. Some may disagree with me, but for me, marketing should be thought of as an investment not an expense. So, if the intent of your marketing is to increase sales, then unless your return on investment is greater than your marketing expense, why on earth would you do it? This is where defining a marketing budget and being able to track the financial impact of the marketing initiative itself really matters. There is no fixed percentage return to be achieved but you should define what you require at the start of the process. Visit OrgMent Business Solutions at: www.ombs.com.au

Enjoy a fun-filled escape at Xplosions Bar and Bowl Xplosions Bar and Bowl in Melton was started by three locals who felt that the area needed more in the way of fun for all ages and abilities. Since opening in August 2019, Xplosions Bar and Bowl has become a family-friendly escape from everyday life, where everyone can enjoy a few hours of good old-fashioned fun. With ten lanes of tenpin bowling, a pool room, digital darts, over 35 arcade games and a fully licensed cafe, Xplosions Bar and Bowl is perfect for functions such as kids parties and corporate events. Owners Lisa Houston, Mark Mullins and Mark Opie all came from various corporate backgrounds and wanted to try something new and exciting. “We started chatting over a few bevvies and wanted to try something a little different,” Lisa says. “I’m not sure at the time that we knew what we were getting ourselves into – we did know we wanted to do something that was fun that involved the community in the west where we all grew up.” With the business motto of ‘don’t grow up, it’s a trap,’ Xplosions Bar and Bowl is entertainment suited to all members of the family, from little ones to grandparents, with the venue accessible to prams and wheelchairs. Xplosions has created a program that recognises positive interactions and behaviours by kids in grassroots sport programs. The Contribution Awards Program provides rewards to kids involved in community sport associations for things such as helping their coach, assisting in the community canteen without being asked and even kicking or shooting the winning goal in a game. As a relatively new business, Xplosions has

certainly faced pandemic-related challenges like most other small businesses in Victoria. However, locals from the Melton and surrounding areas have remained supportive of their community and its businesses. “It’s been very challenging due to COVID, and we are very grateful to the local and outer communities for their continued support

during each lockdown,” explains Lisa. “We aim to be around for a long time and in the future to bring new, exciting games and in time, to eventually extend the venue to incorporate the latest craze - whatever that may be in this forever changing landscape.” With the lifting of lockdown well underway, you can present this article to the friendly staff

at Xplosions and with the purchase of one game of bowling, you can receive your second game for free (for a limited time only). Xplosions Bar and Bowl is located at 1-25 Bakery Square, Melton. For more information, visit www.xplosionsbarandbowl.com.au

MOTOR

Kia’s electrified crossover SUV By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Kia Australia has launched into its electric future in a big way with hybrid, plug-in hybrid and full-electric versions of the Niro crossover SUV. Each of the three powertrains is offered in two trims, S and Sport. Our road test review was of the Hybrid version in Sport trim. It’s the one we feel is most likely to appeal to typical folks concerned about minimising air pollution, but unable, or unwilling to pay the almost $17,000 more for the full electric version. Again, it’s time for me to launch into my criticism of our governments who are more interested in keeping coal miners happy than in providing clean air. Indeed, some of our elected officials who are still denying the facts that our climate is warming. Another reason for me not testing the full electric is that we live in an apartment and there’s no power point within cooee of our parking spot.

Styling The shape is neat and tidy and - unlike too many in this class - it has a rear end that put luggage capacity ahead of style. We like that. Interestingly, the radiator grille closes to improve aerodynamics when full engine cooling isn’t required, such as during cold weather. Somewhat oddly the full electric model has a grille when none is required. It seems like people don’t like to have vehicles’ fronts without a grille, but Kia certainly not the only company to do this. The grille has Kia’s traditional ‘tiger nose’ styling, which is integrated neatly into the frontal shape.

Interior Part-leather/part-cloth seat trim give it an upmarket look and feel. Dual zone air-conditioning is handy because it gets the complete interior down to a decent temperature faster - which is very handy in Australia as we head into what may be a hotter than average summer.

Infotainment An 8.0-inch touchscreen media system controls wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a six speaker DAB digital radio. Which isn’t as fashionable as multi-multi speaker systems in some car these days, but is sound fine.

Engines / transmissions The Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid drivetrains both have a 1.6 petrol engine with outputs of 77.2kW of peak power and 147 of torque. It works alongside a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor. There’s an additional maximum output of 32kW for the Hybrid and 44.5kW for the plug-in model with torque of 170Nm in both cases. Combined system output for both the Hybrid and PHEV is 104kW and 265Nm. For the Plug-In Hybrid energy is stored in a pair of Lithium-Ion polymer batteries with 360 Volts combined. One battery is under the rear seat and one under a panel in the boot floor. They have a combined capacity of 24.7Ah and 8.9kWh with a weight of 117kg. Both models drive the front wheels through a six-speed dual-clutch automatic with the ICE and electric motor use determined by driving conditions and the drive mode selections by the driver. In normal operating conditions the Hybrid system uses electric drive from a standstill and during gentle acceleration, such as in stop-start city traffic. Under full acceleration the engine works with the electric motor to provide optimum drive. At constant cruising speeds the default is power assist mode with the petrol engine providing the main drive. Excess torque created in these circumstances can be stored by the battery. During deceleration the regenerative braking system harvests energy and stores it in the battery.

Safety The Niro has been given a crash safety rating of five. Features that assist you to avoid, or at least mitigate injuries to occupants include forward braking that can detect and brake for cars at speed from eight km/h to 180km/h. It has pedestrian and cyclist detection that works between 8.0km/h and 70km/h. To make life simpler for the driver there is lane keep assist that works from 55km/h to 180km/h. It doesn’t just warn the driver but also by actively steering the car back into its lane. There’s also lane-follow assist, which will keep the car in the centre of the lane, this does depend on the lane marking are easy for the cars to ‘see’. Again, it works from zero to 180km/h but only works when active cruise control is on.

Driving The Kia Niro is getting on in years, having been launched overseas in 2017 though it

didn’t reach Australia until 2021. Its handling doesn’t feel as though it’s had the extensive mods that are often made by local Kia engineers. It’s competent enough but don’t expect anything exciting in the way it handles.

There’s more steering wheel free play than we like. The instant reaction to the accelerator which is such a feature of any electric vehicle is fun. Obviously, this disappears when the electric motor isn’t operating when the batteries are flat. However, the batteries do sometimes pick up a bit of charge when your slowing down or descending hills so there’s a little extra punch off the line at times. We found it came close to the officially recorded electric-only driving range of 58 kilometres. Petrol consumption is pretty good the overall range sitting around 500 to 800 km when we ran the Kia without the assistance of the battery. Kia’s seven-year unlimited kilometre warranty, seven-year capped price servicing and seven-year roadside assist apply across the Niro range with the exception of the high voltage battery and electric motor which are covered by a seven-year 150,000km warranty.

Melton Centrals re-sign netball coaching duo Melton Centrals have announced they will re-sign coaches Randy Pereira and Doug Mitchell for 2022 Riddell District Netball League. In a Facebook post last week, the club announced the news with comments from the pair saying they are “looking forward to 2022”. This year the club was on top of the B-grade and C-grade ladders when the season was called off. The under-19s were also in a finals position. Speaking to Star Weekly, Pereira said they plan on “trying to get all our teams into finals” and that they “have some terrific young talent to work with”. “We are excited about the future of our

netball teams and the club as a whole,” he said. Pereira said that despite last season being “bitter sweet” due to the pandemic, he is “really looking forward to next year”. “At least we know we get a season,” he said. The A-grade team, which finished eighth this year, is expected to look a lot different, with most of the players set to be under 30. Even Centrals’ B-grade will have three teenagers playing, including two under-15s. He said the club was in a rebuilding phase. Pereira said the chance to play against more advanced teams will be a “good learning curve” for the girls. “It’s also the way I like to go,” he said. Pereira said he’s found younger players

have “more enthusiasm” and “less back chat”. “I’m getting too old for back chat.” Next season will be Pereira’s 15th as the Centrals’ coach, including an unplayed season last year. He said he hasn’t been able to find “somebody who can take over, that the girls like, who can look after the club,” but said that Mitchell is a “good thing”. “He knows what he’s doing,” he said. Trials are expected to run mid-late November or early December after the club knows more from the Victorian government on restrictions for team sport. Fast forward draft hope By Sarah Oliver Western Jets small forward Paul Curtis is looking good for the 2022 AFL draft. The Melton local has been speaking to numerous clubs in the lead-up to the draft in November, with about eight clubs seriously interested in moving forward. At the prospect of playing professionally next year, Curtis said it’s nerve wracking, but that he’s “very excited, very keen”. He said it’s “exciting just being in the environment” of the drafting world. Curtis found his love for the game at 11-years-old when he started playing for Melton South. “At that age I was just playing for fun … just playing with my mates from school,” he said. But when he reached the under-16 team, he realised how serious he was about the sport after making a few squads and having his name out there. “I started taking it a bit more serious, as well as still having fun,” he said. The last two years have been challenging for the 18-year-old with constant lockdowns and restrictions putting a hold on community sport. But Curtis has maintained a positive outlook on the challenges of the pandemic, and found extra time to train independently and improve his game. “It’s kind of been somewhat good for me because I could have my own independence and I could work on things that I need to work on,” he said. Another hurdle for Curtis was contracting COVID-19 which made it “a bit challenging not being able to go outside and exercise”. Even without having the virus, he wouldn’t have made it to the planned combine as it was cancelled due to restrictions. But luckily for Curtis, there will be a training session in mid-November for scouts and media to attend. After that, it’s draft day Curtis will be focusing on next and he plans to impress. “Endurance is a big one” when it comes to improvements, he said. He also wants to work on his midfield craft. “I don’t want to be a one-dimensional player just playing in the forward line,” he said. In training and on the field, Curtis said he models his game on medium forwards Bayley Fritsch from Melbourne and Luke Bruce from Hawthorn. Although a Carlton supporter, Curtis would “love to play for Geelong”. But for now, he will continue playing for the Jets where he feels “I blend in really well down there”.

Theoharous signs on with United Winger Christian Theoharous’ immediate impact since joining Western United training has seen him earn a two-year scholarship contract. The 21-year-old returns to the A-League after spending three seasons in Germany with Borussia Monchengladbach II. Theoharous has trained with United the past month. “It’s an honour to play for such an ambitious club and the camaraderie around the group is special,” he said. “You can see everyone involved in the club is motivated and wants to win, which is very infectious. I can’t wait to be playing in front of the fans this season.” Theoharous made his debut in the A-League as an 18-year-old with Melbourne Victory. He played a significant part in Victory’s 2017-18 championship and he also played six games in the Asian Champions League. United head coach John Aloisi has been impressed by Theoharous’ impact in training as well as his mix of experience, talent and hunger to improve. “Christian has been absolutely first-class since he came in and has really made a big impression on the rest of the group,” he said. “With everything he’s picked up in Germany and the experience he already has in this league, he will be a really valuable addition to our side. “He can play on the wing or through the middle for us. He’s really skilled on the ball, works incredibly hard and is eager to keep improving. We can’t wait to keep seeing him grow in our shirt and contribute on the pitch this season.” Meanwhile, United will be in action next week in the first round of the national stage of the FFA Cup. A-League teams will be playing their first match of the tournament. United will face Newcastle Jets on Saturday night at GMHBA Stadium at 7pm. The fixture had been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and border closures. The winner will face Wellington Phoenix. Tara Murray
