Chop for charity After growing his hair for two-and-a-half years, 10-year-old Noah decided it was time to cut it off for something different. The Hillside resident decided that while he didn’t want his hair anymore, it could help other people. “I just felt like I wanted to get it cut off,” he said. “My mum asked me if I wanted to donate my hair and I decided I wanted to.” His hair will be used for a wig, while he’s been raising money for the Make A Wish Foundation. Noah decided that he wanted to give to children who really needed it. As of last Thursday, he had raised more than $1000 beating his initial goal of $200. “I just want to see how much I can get now.” Noah had his hair cut on Saturday, but is already planning to grow it again and raise more money to help others. Waste agreement a first By Sarah Oliver Melton council will cease sending household waste to Ravenhall tip in two years after agreeing to send the city’s rubbish to a waste to energy plant in Laverton. Council said the agreement, with Recovered Energy Australia and Solo Resource Recovery, is the first of its kind in Victoria. Under the agreement, council will transition away from sending waste to landfill, with rubbish instead to be processed at the waste to energy plant and converted into electricity.
Council estimates that about 50,000 tonnes of waste will be diverted from landfill each year. It said the reduction in carbon dioxide emissions (Co2) would be the equivalent to planting one million trees. Council said it was one of a number of organisations planning to use the plant, which is expected to begin operating in mid-2024. Mayor Goran Kesic said council was looking forward to implementing the innovative process. “We’re proud to transition away from landfill and lead the way as one of the first
councils in Victoria to process kerbside waste at a waste-to-energy facility,” Cr Kesic said. “This alternative method will help manage waste costs and meet emissions reduction targets. “We look forward to seeing this facility fully operational in the coming years. This is about creating a greener future and providing greater cost certainty around waste processing.” Cr Kesic said ratepayers would also benefit from the change. “This is good news for managing costs. When compared to the rising costs of the state government’s landfill levy, it’s predicted this
will provide ratepayers with a cost benefit in the long-term, as well as an environmental benefit,” he said. “Like our existing waste disposal method, this is charged by volume meaning our residents can influence the cost by recycling and composting more. “We want to continue to work with our residents to reduce the amount of rubbish going into the red bin. It’s the best way to further pass on cost benefits to ratepayers, and initiatives like our food and garden organics disposal are helping our community to achieve this.”
