Small businesses shine

By Max Hatzoglou The “strength and stamina” of Sunshine’s small businesses and their owners will be celebrated over the coming months as part of the inaugural Sunshine Business Awards.

An initiative of the Sunshine Business Association (SBA), with support from Brimbank council, the awards aim to recognise small businesses that survived the COVID-19 lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 and are now “battling” through recovery.

SBA president Vu Du said the association wanted to recognise and reward Sunshine’s

“best and brightest” businesses.

“We are delighted to announce our first ever ‘Sunshine Business Awards, acknowledging and rewarding our best and brightest in our community,” he said.

“In light of our current inflation and struggles of many business during COVID, we hope that with this promotion will not only provide recognition to the businesses/ community leaders for a job well done, but to also share their insights on their success stories so that other businesses can feel empowered to do the same.”

There are 12 award categories covering

cafes; restaurants; sweets, drinks and takeaway; business services; community services; fashion and jewellery; fresh food and groceries; hair and beauty; lifestyle; medical, fitness and health; real estate; and community and sporting groups.

The community will be able to vote for their favourite businesses between Wednesday, June 1 and Sunday, July 31.

Winners will be announced at a gala business networking event on Wednesday, August 10.

Solar farm proposal for Albion

By Max Hatzoglou A Brimbank councillor has suggested council consider building a solar farm on the Sunshine Energy Park site.

The 44-hectare site in Albion was previously used as a basalt quarry and landfill.

Council is undertaking remediation works to clean up toxic waste at the site to regenerate it as open space.

Cr Bruce Lancashire suggested a solar farm be constructed on the site to help with climate change.

“Despite all this [contamination], I believe this park can help council with its climate change emergency policy and council’s urban forest policy,” he said.

Cr Lancashire suggested neighbouring areas

could also be used as a mixed use site.

“In terms of the long term strategy, I think we should look at the land between energy park and the residential land towards the south of Ballarat Road as a possible mixed use site,” he said.

“This land does present itself with exciting opportunities, not just for what can be developed there but also for what could provide access through for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles.”

Cr Virginia Tachos said it would be a good opportunity to increase tree canopy at the site.

“I echo the thoughts of the solar farm but really believe it should be a place where we should increase our canopy because our canopy, as we know, is 5.5 per cent,hich is the lowest in the state.

“I think when we did go on the tour as councillors to this site, we were really amazed at how large and how imposing and how central it is to our community.

“It’s always been an off-bounds place for us because of the toxicity but to actually be able to walk on it and see the dimensions of it was quite amazing.”

Pupils join Big Battery Rescue A western suburbs school is getting savvy with sustainability by participating in a national recycling challenge to help protect the environment.

Kororoit Creek Primary School is joining the Big Battery Rescue, designed to help schools learn how to recycle batteries with a free education program.

The challenge is run by The National Theatre for Children and Stockland property group and participating schools receive free recycling kits, an educational program which includes live-in-school and livestream educational theatre performances by professional actors and the chance to win cash prizes by recycling batteries.

Kororoit Creek Primary School learning specialist Hannah Simmons said pupils had participated remotely during lockdown and recycled 50 kilograms in batteries last year, but were excited to be able to join in person.

“They just get a really big kick out of knowing that they’re making a difference and … bringing in batteries, counting them, talking to their friends about it, talking to their teacher about it,” Ms Simmons said.

The program has already recycled 2000 kilograms of batteries nationwide in the past two years, with 15,000 students participating this year.

Ms Simmons said the school chose the program as it tied into their focus of the

students being “global minded citizens”.

“We’re wanting our kids to be globally minded, taking action outside of what connects directly to them and looking at the community impacts on others as well.”

She said the best part of the program was the students’ enjoyment of video content created for the school with fun characters called The Energized Guyz.

“They send videos and resources to engage the students and help them to understand what they might be doing and how they can contribute,” Ms Simmons said.

“The kids are really excited … those types of challenges really excite them.”

Works are under way to rebuild and reseal a section of the Western Freeway between Ravenhall and Derrimut.

Crews worked on the inbound lanes of the freeway between Ballarat and Robinsons roads, Ravenhall, from Friday, May 20 to Monday, May 23.

Crews are expected to turn their attention to the outbound lanes between the Western Ring Road and Robinsons Road, Derrimut, from Friday, June 3 to Monday, June 6, weather permitting.

According to the state government, the works will make the road pavement stronger and more reliable for the 30,000 vehicles that use the freeway daily.

Roads and Road Safety Minister Ben Carroll said: “Maintenance is crucial in keeping our roads and arterials running smoothly and ensuring Victorians get where they need to go safely.

“The Western Freeway provides a vital connection for the community and these works will ensure it can continue to carry our growing road network well into the future.

“We are delivering these works over two weekends to try to minimise disruption as much as possible and we thank the community for their patience during this time.”

School site fire A disused building at the old Ardeer Secondary College site in Sunshine West went up in flames on Saturday night. Fire crews received a number of calls about 7.30pm regarding a fire at the Glengala Road site. Crews arrived they to find a disused school building alight. Despite trouble accessing the old school, the fire was under control by 8.07pm. The cause of the fire was unknown.

Victoria University Secondary College held a Be Well, Stay Well day for its year seven, eight and nine year students last Tuesday, promoting health and wellbeing.

Health professionals including Black Dog AIS Mental Fitness Program, Mental Wellness (Melbourne Mission), Elephant Ed, Health Care Pathways and Party Safe visited the school as part of the day, while VUSC’s mental practitioner Siobhan Nayland ran a number of sessions for students.

Principal Elaine Hazim said the day aimed to help students better understand mental health and how to access support services.

“The aim of the event was to enable our students to develop the social and emotional skills to grow into happy, respectful, well-balanced, and successful members of the school and wider school community,” she said.

Ms Hazim said students learnt about a range of different topics such as sleep hygiene, eating

and exercise, mental fitness, mindfulness and relaxation, online safety, making smart choices and positive risk taking, health care pathways, emotional literacy and safe gaming.

Ms Hazim said the day could help students to deal with challenges in future.

“Mental health is more than the absence of mental illness. Mental Health is a state of wellbeing where students can meet their learning potential, cope with normal school stresses, and are connected to their friends and wider community,” she said.

“Mental health and academic achievement can also powerfully impact one another.

Strong overall mental fitness, wellbeing, and resiliency positively impacts students’ school performance. If a student feels adequately supported and successful in school, then this improves their self-esteem, emotional health, and academic results.”

Brimbank council is hosting a range of events to celebrate Reconciliation Week, including a session to explore First Nations authors and learn more about Aboriginal culture and tradition through stories and art. The event will be held at Sunshine Library on June 2 from 4pm,vwith the community invited to come along and hear the stories of ‘Warnayarra the Rainbow Snake’ and ‘Crabbing with Dad’. They will then be able to create their own rainbow snake and crab to take home. At Keilor Library, people can hear stories by Ros Moriarty, Annaliese Porter, Ezekiel Kwaymullina and Leonie Norrinton to learn more about Aboriginal culture and tradition. Attendees will then be able to stay and create some artwork inspired by aboriginal culture.

Help to tackle drugs and alcohol

By Max Hatzoglou New programs to help people struggling with alcohol or drug concerns are coming to Melbourne’s northern and western suburbs later this month.

The programs will be funded by the North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN). The funding will go towards LGBTIQ+ specialists Thorne Harbour Health (THH), and the Youth Support and Advocacy Service (YSAS) in partnership with Drummond Street Services and Odyssey House Victoria.

A project called Rainbow Recovery, run

by Thorne Harbour Health, is introducing

several therapeutic supports for the LGBTIQ+ community.

The Rainbow Recovery project will include two time-limited peer support programs for specific LGBTIQ+ cohorts with the first being Rewired, an eight-week group program for men who have sex with men and want to change their relationship with methamphetamine.

The second is Drink Limits, a six-week group program for lesbian, bisexual, and queer women (both cis and trans) who use alcohol.

Thorne Harbour Health director of services Carolyn Gillespie said demand for alcohol grew during the COVID pandemic and some were finding it hard to find treatment.

“As demand for [alcohol and drug] services across Victoria have ballooned during the COVID-19 pandemic, people experiencing multiple structural barriers have struggled to access treatment. Our program moves to address some of these issues,“ she said.

The YSAS alliance is also offering programs aimed at young people between 12 and 25 who intersect with multiple communities and are experiencing alcohol and drug challenges.

Youth Support and Advocacy Service manager Brydie Hill said the program would program a wide range of resources to support young people.

“Our approach sees young people

supported through access to a wide range of case-appropriate services, including rehab, housing services, child protection, and community legal assistance,” she said.

NWMPHN service development and reform executive director Jagjit Dhaliwal said the need to commission new services in the region was recognised after extensive consultation with community, people in the region using drug and alcohol services and clinical experts.

“Our research shows that some of those communities face multiple barriers in finding help because of factors as diverse as gender, language and socio-economic status,” Mr Dhaliwal said.

Join creek planting day Brimbank council in partnership with the Friends of Kororoit Creek invites the community to attend its planting day on World Environment Day on June 5.

More than 1000 Indigenous shrubs, wildflowers and grasses are set to be planted to continue expanding the habitat for Brimbank’s wildlife along Kororoit Creek.

The day will begin at 10am at the Stepping Stones at the creek in Sunshine West, with family-friendly activities and a barbecue.

Friends of Kororoit Creek volunteer Michelle Muscat said volunteering with the group had been good for her health and wellbeing.

She said days like World Environment Day were great for bringing the community together to contribute to improving the environment.

“We’ve only got one planet and we got to look after it well and everything that we participate in helps make it strive and grow.”

Brimbank mayor Jasmine Nguyen said the event was a great opportunity for locals to look after the environment.

“Our reserves and open spaces are not only great places to enjoy a walk, but also havens for Brimbank’s unique plants and animals – many of them endangered,” Cr Nguyen said.

“Attending a planting day, or doing your bit to look after the grasslands in your neighbourhoods are important ways we can protect more than 121 native animal species that call our grasslands and open spaces home.

“Since colonisation, less than one per cent of native grasses and wildflowers remain in Brimbank. There is a lot of work that needs to be done to address this and protect what remains for Brimbank’s unique plants and animals.”

United by the green and black Soccer fans from across the western suburbs and Geelong were dreaming of green and black last week in the lead up to the club’s inaugural grand final. United overcame Melbourne Victory in the A-League Men semi final on May 21 to book a spot in the May 28 grand final against Melbourne City. Star Weekly spoke to fans – many of whom have supported United since its inception three years ago – about their love for the team from the west.

The Camilleri family Hillside’s Leanne Camilleri and her daughters Shanae and Sharna have been fans of the club since “the very beginning”.

The girls play for Calder United football club. “When something came to the west, we had to start following them,” Ms Camilleri said.

She said the last week of anticipation had been “crazy” in the lead up to the final.

“They’ve done well every year … but to finally get to the final is great,“ she said.

“It’s just really good when we all get together, all the fans get together, we’re all sitting near each other with adrenaline and excitement. It’s fun supporting the team.”

The Vergles family Bacchus Marsh’ Vergles family love to support Western United and were so excited to attend the big game.

“We are excited for the big grand final, it’s going to be great,” Hilda Vergles said.

She said it was great to have witnessed the club grow from the beginning.

“It’s been phenomenal, we’re just so proud of all the people involved with the club,” she said. “It is just amazing and gives us

something in the west to be so proud of.”

Ms Vergles said she loved supporting the club with her children as it reminded her of her own youth and how soccer brought families together.

“It’s a beautiful thing, to share that with my family is even more important because when I was growing up, I had my clubs that I was a part of with my family and I still hold those memories very, very dear to me.”

Jenni Woollam says her family, from Hoppers Crossing, have been members “from day one”.

“My husband Michael was a previous Melbourne Victory fan … when he found out that we were going to have a club in the west, he immediately sort of jumped ship and said ’nah, we’re gonna support our local’,” Ms Woollam said. “[He] sort of dragged us along in the beginning … but immediately felt connected to the Western United Football Club, it was something that brought our whole family together.”

“They wrote off our coach John Aloisi, wrote off our club for the the finals, not oneexpertpickedustobeatMelbourneVictory,” she said. “We love being underestimated.”

Ms Spiess said she enjoys watching games with her friend, Bec Smith, and both families love the club, and the Unitedfamily.

“People in the west should get behind the team so they can say ‘I was there for the first grand final win’,” she said.

Since the beginning United have been using City Vista Recreation Reserve, the home of Caroline Springs George Cross and also Roman and Ronald’s junior club as a training venue.

This has given the young fans a close look at the exciting players United have have over the year’s including their favourite, goalkeeper Jamie Young.

Asked about what he likes the most about Western United, Ronald said: “That they made the finals and that they’re my favourite team in the A-League.”

Mother Monia gave credit to coach John Aloisi who is in his first year as coach of the club.

She was proud of the team’s ability to perform without a star player.

“Coaches are very good, especially the boys, they are doing very good now,” she said. “We don’t have Diamanti on board but the boys are still giving 100 per cent.”

The boys said it was nice to have a team representing where they live doing well in the competition.

The Howie family The Howie family from Kurunjang loves to get behind the green and black and had all their best fan apparel ready to go for the big match.

Craig Howie said he had fond memories of taking his daughter and niece to a match after they’d attended a school holiday program when one of the players had remembered them and thanked them for coming to watch.

“Ever since then, they’ve been hooked,” Mr Howie said. “It’s a great family team.”

John Coumans, 11, was supposed to be on school camp this week, but decided to stay home, fearing he would catch COVID and miss out on attending the game.

“He was supposed to go on camp but there’s been a lot of COVID at school and he was worried about getting it and having to be in isolation and not being able to attend the grand final,” mum Rachael said.

“He made the decision to lay low this week. He was disappointed but we’ve followed Western since the beginning.”

Rachael’s three boys, John, Phillip and Aiden love the atmosphere that The Western Service Crew creates and know all the songs and chants and are more than happy to sit right in the middle of the active supporters group.

“They are absolutely stoked,” she said.

“We were shocked that we won on Saturday but the result was magnificent.

We all agreed it was the best game we have been to.”

The boys, from St Albans Park in Geelong, feel welcomed into the green and black family.

“We went to Tassie for the two games they had down there,” Rachael said.

“The players have just been so lovely. In fact the whole club has been amazing.”

National storytime branches out More than one million parents and children across the country, including a gathering at Keilor Library, took part in this year’s National Simultaneous Storytime by reading the picture story book, ’Family Tree’ by Josh Pyke and Ronojoy Ghosh.

About 20 parents and children attended the event at the Keilor Library this year.

The event is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association. A picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes and bookshops.

This year marked the 22nd year of the event which aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children’s book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for foundation to year 6.

A Brimbank council spokesperson said the event drew 64 children and 57 adults across the Sunshine, Keilor and Deer Park libraries.

“Pyke and Ghosh’s story highlights the importance of family, community and diversity, reflecting the welcoming and multicultural nature of Brimbank. Attendees created their own paper family trees, and planted their own seedlings that will grow as their family grows,“ a spokesperson said.

“Attendees had a wonderful time listening to the story, as well as sharing what family and community means to them. We are looking forward to seeing their seedlings growing into mighty trees around Brimbank.”

Mental health a council priority

By Max Hatzoglou Brimbank council is hopeful its new plan will improve mental health support in the community.

The mental health plan 2022-24 is based on council’s research with key stakeholders in 2021 to analyse mental health service provisions.

The research was in response to the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System.

According to council, mental wellbeing

has been identified as a significant issue, with residents reporting lower levels of wellbeing than the Victorian average.

Six issues were identified in Brimbank, including stigma associated with getting help for mental health issues and demand for services exceeding supply.

Poverty and disadvantage making it difficult to access services was also an area identified, alongside residents not knowing and understanding what support services exist.

Individual’s resistance to acknowledging the need for help and difficulties in navigating a

complex mental health system were also issues.

Council said it will advocate for the delivery of new services and supports as well as delivering social inclusion initiative aimed at vulnerable groups.

It has also supported mental first aid training and is aiming to raise awareness of services and supports to help people navigate the system.

Mayor Jasmine Nguyen said improving mental health is a priority in Brimbank.

“Mental health services providers do an important job in helping to improve the

community’s wellbeing and it is our role as a council to advocate, facilitate and enable the delivery of those essential services,” Cr Nguyen said.

“Improved mental wellbeing is a priority in Brimbank and the best way we can achieve this is through targeted strategies that support the vital work being done by our hard-working mental health service providers.

Our research has identified better ways we can support people with mental health needs to access the services they need to live happy, healthy and productive lives.”

Free writing workshops Author and St Albans Secondary English teacher Amra Pajalic will be hosting memoir writing workshops at Sunshine Library from June 2 to June 23.

Ms Pajalic has been teaching at St Albans Secondary School for nine years and was recently recognised on International Women’s Day as one of eight incredible Melbourne based writers to read.

Ms Pajalic grew up in the west and completed her schooling at St Albans Secondary School.

The free sessions will go through memoir overview, writing structure and publication.

Ms Pajalic recently re-released her debut novel The Good Daughter as Sabiha’s Dilemma, for which she won the 2009 Melbourne Prize for Literature’s Civic Choice Award.

“As a westie girl coming from St Albans and writing, most of my writing is young adults and I write memoir also and I’ve done all sorts of different genres,” Ms Pajalic said.

“I write about characters set in St Albans and

for young people”.

Ms Pajalic, who is of Bosnian cultural heritage, said it meant a lot to be able to uncover perspectives in her stories which create connections with under-represented groups.

“It also means a lot from that perspective in terms of working with young people who don’t have their stories represented, don’t have their life’s represented so that’s why I love doing adult fiction,” she said.

“And then also being a role model for young people because we do have this thing about coming from the western suburbs and feeling this cringe.

“So it just means so much to people now to take pride in where they come from and their diverse culture.”

MY PLACE How would you describe your connection to Maribyrnong and the west?

My family came to Australia as refugees in the early 80s from Vietnam when I was six and we have lived in the western suburbs of Melbourne for more than 40 years until now. I grew up locally around the Footscray and St Albans area. I did all my schooling in the western suburbs. I went to Footscray North Primary School and Marian College in West Sunshine, before attending MacRobertson Girls High School in my senior years. After graduating from medicine at Monash University, I returned to the west to work mainly at Western Health. After completing my specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Royal Women’s Hospital, Mercy Hospital for Women and at Sunshine Hospital, I worked as a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Sunshine Hospital and Werribee Mercy Hospital.

I’m now consulting in private practice in Maribyrnong, but I travel all over the west suburbs to see patients. I joined Monash IVF over 10 years ago, and I’m now mainly based at the Monash IVF Sunshine clinic, helping women and couples achieve their dreams of becoming parents. I’m passionate about all aspects of fertility, including male infertility issues. I especially want to ensure that young women from all ethnic backgrounds are aware of and can readily access treatment options they require, including IVF, egg freezing and donor sperm. I’ve helped many couples and individuals in the west become parents and I’ve delivered quite a few of their babies over the years too!

Dr Thu Mai has lived in the western suburbs of Melbourne for more than 40 years after her family came to Australia as refugees in the 80s. She has since become a respected consulting obstetrician and gynaecologist and is the only Vietnamese speaking fertility specialist in Victoria, as she tells Matthew Sims.

What do you love about where you live?

I spent almost all of my life growing up and living in the west and now I’m working here locally as well. I feel a very special bond to this side of town having grown up here. I’ve witnessed all the suburbs grow and develop.

I love the diverse multiculturalism that has transformed the western suburbs over the years, with wonderful ethnic cultures, shops and restaurants, the familiarity of the suburbs,

the friendly people and the ethnic communities here. Where else would I rather be but the west?

My brother is also a doctor practicing in the west as well.

How has your Vietnamese background informed your life and work?

There weren’t many ethnic kids at school back in the days of the early 80s, until at least the 90s where waves of immigrants from diverse ethnic backgrounds started arriving. However, my parents tried to keep our Vietnamese traditions and taught us our cultures and language at home. My siblings and I attended Vietnamese schools locally on the weekends. I’m glad I did because I can now write and converse in fluent Vietnamese. As an adult, my background has allowed me to provide healthcare to patients from a range of backgrounds. Being a migrant myself, I appreciate other cultures and their traditions, and I am acutely aware of the stigmas that unfortunately still exist when it comes to fertility treatment. Being aware of these challenges allows me to advocate on behalf of patients and help them navigate any obstacles they may face. As the only Vietnamese speaking fertility specialist in Victoria, and probably in Australia, it also helps that I speak the language fluently as I can connect with not just my Vietnamese patients, but also their families and other Vietnamese speaking doctors in the area.

Where is your favourite local place to spend time?

Highpoint Shopping Centre. I never get sick of Highpoint. I used to get taken to Highpoint by

my parents every weekend growing up. Now I pop into Highpoint at least a few times a week for grocery shopping, clothes shopping and my children love to even just window shop or eat at the food courts. My children also love their weekly trip to the local Maribyrnong library, to browse through the books. As for myself, I love the cafes and restaurants in front of my clinic in the Edgewater Estate. But my favourite cafes and restaurants locally where I spend a lot of time are The Boathouse and Feekah in Moonee Ponds and Old Man Drew in Ascot Vale.

What have you loved most about your work?

I feel like I have been blessed to have a career where I can create lives and help bring lives into the world, help women and couples achieve their dreams of becoming parents and having a family. This is the most rewarding aspect of my career. I also feel very privileged that women, especially women of ethnic backgrounds, feel comfortable to consult with me about their general gynaecological issues which is quite a personal issue.

Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you.

When I’m not consulting, looking sophisticated and wearing my corporate attire, I’m a mother running around after two young kids in activewear. A lot of my patients don’t recognise me when they bump into me in the shopping centre. When I’m not in the rooms consulting or in the hospital performing surgery, egg pick-ups or doing embryo transfers, I’m a health fanatic. I cycle 20 kilometres a day, rain or shine.

Give blood so others may live Australian Red Cross Lifeblood is putting a call out for new and former blood, plasma and platelets donors across the western and northern suburbs of Melbourne to step up as cancellations remain at 50 per cent and need for blood products is the highest it has ever been, as Matthew Sims discovers.

ifeblood donor services executive director Cath Stone said the past two years had been difficult for the organisation.

“It’s definitely pretty challenging at the minute and probably has been since the start of the pandemic,” she said.

“As lockdowns have eased off … donors have found other places to be, people have been sick with COVID, they’re now getting sick with the flu, flying and visiting relatives.”

Ms Stone said there have been a number of shifts coming out of the pandemic in terms of the availability of donors to come in and donate.

“What we’re seeing during the pandemic is certainly a change in the seasonal behaviour of our donors,“ she said. “There hasn’t been a lot of cold and flu the last couple of years because we’ve all been locked down.

“We know we’ve got, I think, a particularly challenging winter ahead of us.”

Ms Stone said while demand requirements were about 29,000 donations a week two years ago, the organisation now required about 33,000 donations a week.

“That jump has been quite astronomical in the last couple of years,” she said. “What we are keeping an eye on is just that ongoing demand as people are still catching up on the surgeries that they deferred during the lockdowns.

“Our need for whole blood is the highest level that we’ve seen it in over 10 years.”

Ms Stone said the organisation aimed to have three days of supply of all blood types in its manufacturing centre in Melbourne’s west.

“We hold it so that we can meet patient demand at the minute,” she said.

Ms Stone said 11 million Australians were currently eligible to donate but just 500,000 donate blood, plasma or platelets.

“We would like to grow that number this year by about 150,000 new donors to really help ease off some of the pressures, particularly on our whole blood donors,” she said.

“I think they had the mobile blood banks at university,” she said.

Ms Smith said she saw her donations as volunteer work.

“I like to do it because it’s helping other people,” she said.

Initially donating blood, Ms Smith has now been donating plasma for the past 15 years at a number of donation centres, including the Airport West centre.

“I find it very easy to do,” she said. “It’s nice to think other people are benefiting.”

Ms Smith said almost anyone can donate and it is quick and painless.

“The staff are very helpful,” she said.

Donors can make three different types of donations when they visit a donation centre.

Whole blood donations take about 15 minutes, but donors must wait three months between donations.

In terms of plasma, donors can donate for about 45 minutes every two weeks because the red blood cells are transported back into the body and less recovery time is needed.

Plasma products last for about 42 days, while platelets only last for seven days.

Platelets are used for trauma events, clotting issues and cancer treatments and can only be given by men who have donated plasma before.

Ms Stone said they were hoping for a number of donors to roll up their sleeves across the Werribee, Airport West and Bundoora centres during June, as well as at the Sunshine, Melton and Williamstown pop-up centres.

“We need just over 3000 whole blood appointments on its own,” she said.

“You can almost double that if we’re thinking about plasma as well.

Ms Stone said donated blood could travel anywhere in the country.

“You may come in and do a donation at Werribee, it could end up at Royal Melbourne,” she said. “Just as equally, it could be sent right up to far north Queensland depending on your blood type and what availability is needed.”

Ms Stone said centres were still experiencing a 50 per cent cancellation rate of appointments.

“What is very difficult to do is to replace appointments on the day,” she said.

Ms Stone said everyone should consider donating blood if they are eligible to do so.

“One in three of us will need it our lifetime,” she said. “You don’t want it to be today that you find out need it, but you didn’t know that it was part of the critical supply of the nation’s healthcare system.”

Ms Stone said the Lifeblood team was looking forward to National Blood Donor Week [June 13-19] and World Blood Donor Day [June 14].

“What we do see is a rally cry around blood donation and education,” she said.

“It’s always a good week for us in June and it really gives us a bit of a lift.”

Ms Stone said the Lifeblood team was grateful for donors in Melbourne’s west.

“The key message from us is always a thank you for the support,” she said.

“We need to make donation accessible.

“Most of our metro centres are now open seven days a week, later in the evenings.”

Ms Stone said anyone who may have been ineligible a few years ago should look again at the eligibility requirements.

“If you thought you were ineligible, always check.

“We are constantly reviewing and updating our eligibility rules.”

“If you’re between 18 and 76, feel fit and healthy, check online or give us a call and we’d love to see you in centre if you are eligible.”

Lifeblood spokesperson Genevieve Dobson said increased accessibility to a donation time slot for people in Melbourne’s west has arrived, with the Werribee donation centre now open every day of the week.

“Werribee has been operating six days a week but the feedback we’ve had from donors is they would like more opportunities and flexibility,” she said. “We anticipate the extended opening hours will enable Lifeblood to collect an additional 50 to 60 donations every week, which is great news for patients.”

Ms Dobson said there were about 500 appointments to fill in the first week of June.

“The centre has recently undergone a facelift, with additional couches and an open and inviting space to help enhance the donation experience,” she said.

The Williamstown pop-up donation centre at the Williamstown Town Hall will be open every day from Monday, June 20 until Friday, July 1.

The Melton pop-up donation centre at the Melton Community Centre will be open every day from Monday, June 6 until Friday, June 17.

The Sunshine pop-up donation centre at the Croatian Catholic Centre will be open from Monday, July 4 to Friday, July 8.

Eagles remain positive despite facing challenges North Sunshine Eagles coach Ben Isai says his team are supporting one another despite many challenges this season in the National Premier League 3.

The Eagles sit seventh on the ladder after 10 rounds with four wins and a draw, heading into the weekend’s match which was after deadline.

Their last win came in round seven.

Isai said challenges with illnesses, players departures and injuries had kept the squad waiting on final team selections.

“You’re having to wait till the last minute to make decisions on squads,” he said.

“We wouldn’t be the only club battling with this at the moment but we’ve had almost everything happen to us the last five, six weeks.

“We’ve had player departures, we’ve had experienced players being injured. You get an

experienced player back and then you lose one almost in the same period, [and then there’s] COVID.

“And obviously the amount of flu that’s around these days is causing havoc with training sessions and numbers.”

Isai said the challenges, involving COVID, have brought challenges in managing players.

He said in his seven years of coaching he has come across several different scenarios.

“The hardest part about coaching is the management of players,” he said.

“Putting sessions on is fine, it’s when you have to react to illnesses, injuries, lose experienced players [and] players not in it for the long haul in terms of their time at the club.

“We’ve had two or three players leave because of opportunity not [being] there so we’ve had to bump up a few under-21’s.

“It’s difficult but it’s something that I’m sure the other 11 clubs would be in the same boat.”

Footy dream is on track

By Tara Murray Western Jets star Charlotte Baskaran knows that she did everything she could this year to get picked in the AFLW draft.

Having been one of the standouts heading into this year, the Caroline Springs resident enhanced her draft prospects.

She led the Jets to their first NAB League premiership, while finishing second in the league best and fairest award and named captain of the team of the year.

Baskaran was also part of the Vic Metro squad and the AFLW national academy.

Speaking at last week’s AFLW draft combine, she said she was excited about what was to come in the coming months.

“It will be a dream come true,” she said of getting drafted.

“I’ve thought about this moment for years since I first started footy. It’s going to be the best thing ever.

“It’s a nervous wait, but it’s super exciting. I can’t wait. I’ll be doing as much as I can before the draft to get ready.”

Having been a keen netballer and state athletics champion, Baskaran turned to football when she was 16 and never looked back.

She said she loved everything about the sport.

“I loved netball and athletics too,” she said.

“When I started footy, I loved the team environment and the team aspect of it. I loved training and meeting a lot of new people. I decided to stick at footy and now I’m here.”

The Maribyrnong College student soon joined the Jets and was one of the stand out players in the competition.

She said it was bittersweet that her time at the Jets was coming to an end.

“I don’t think I could have done anything more this year,” she said. “I was really happy and to top it off with a premiership win at the Jets.

“I was at the Jets for quite a while. The west has always had a stigma that we weren’t necessarily the best and to cap it off winning the premiership was amazing.”

Since the end of the NAB League season, Baskaran has been flat out with her football

commitments.

She was part of the national championships, before playing for the academy in an young guns game a couple of weeks ago.

An ankle injury in that game meant she couldn’t do the two-kilometre time trial at the combine.

“I was looking forward to running the two k, surprisingly,” she said.

“Now it’s about getting my ankle back to 100 per cent and doing rehab and a bit of upper body training.

“I’m still doing as much as I can and not lose any fitness. I want to keep that positive mindset.”

Baskaran said she had been speaking to AFLW clubs in recent weeks and was enjoying the process.

The year 12 student said she was keen to get started in the next stage of her football career.

“It’s pretty cool,” she said.

It’ll be about finding that balance is going to be very important but I think I can do that. I’m just looking forward to getting into a club.”

“They clearly want to make amends on Saturday and I could see that effort on the training track on Tuesday and hopefully with the training session tonight,” he said on Thursday before the game. “Everybody that’s still there is fighting for three points this week and fighting for our targets this year.

“We have managed the players quite well physically to make sure that we don’t have any further injuries and issues like that.

“The players, like us, have to react and adapt pretty quickly and for the most part, no complaints there, they’re supporting each other and they’re supporting us there and the coaching staff also.”

Westgate gets back on track Westgate hopes its season is back on track in the FV state league 2 north-west competition.

After an up and down start to the season, including changing coaches, Westgate has won its last two matches to sit in fourth spot with five wins.

Coach Jim Gacovski said things were starting to turn around in recent weeks. Gacovski took over as coach when Goran Lozanovski left the club to coach National Premier League side Hume City.

“It was a little bit unfortunate to lose Goran, but he has gone on to bigger and better things,” he said. “Things have been working well the last two weeks. We’ve had two wins in the last two weeks and hopefully we can string another one together this week.”

Gacovski, who was assistant coach, said it was an easy decision to step up and coach the squad, having been involved the last three and half years.

He said the transition back into a senior coaching role, had been stressful, but enjoyable at the same time.

Gacovski admits the toll of the last couple of years had an impact on the playing group earlier in the season.

The side was sitting top last season and was eyeing promotion when the season got called off.

“Mentally it affected the group,” he said. “They were so close before lockdown and they then came back into it and it was COVID affected again.

“The team has got its confidence back and is enjoying their football.

The last few games they’ve started to believe in their abilities again.”

Having not had the start they were after, Gacovski knows they are coming from a long way back if they are to get back into contention for promotion.

He said they were just focusing on each game.

“There’s no guarantees about promotion and we’ll take it week by week to try get the results we want,” he said.

“We’ve set ourselves the goal to take it week by week. We have to increase the work rate on the training track and start working more as a unit.”

Westgate was set to face Epping City on Friday night after deadline.

Western United dream a step closer for sisters Calder United stars Melissa and Adriana Taranto were among those celebrating the official announcement that Western United would have an A-League side next season.

Having previously been at Melbourne Victory, the two along with others are hopeful of getting a spot in the inaugural Western United squad.

“It’s an amazing opportunity,” Adriana said.

“We’ve been hearing about it for the past year and half.

“Now the time has come after a long time for us. Through COVID, we thought is it really going to happen?’’

“After the official announcement, it was a pinch me moment.”

Melissa added that they had been regularly speaking with the team at Western United about when it was all going to happen.

The two are already part of the Western United family, as part of the development team

that was set up in preparation for the A-League team.

Both girls said the development squad had been massive in helping them take their game to the next level.

“They started a partnership with Calder,” Melissa said. “The development girls are from all over the NPL and have come together in a more professional environment.

“You get to feel what it’s like to be part of an A-League club. We have some really good coaches and they fit us out in uniforms as well.”

Adriana added, ”at every training session we have to work hard,” she said.

“It’s a bit of an advantage that we know Mark [Torcaso, Calder coach and the development coach] and he gets to see us three to four times a week.

“We get to train all year round in preparation.

We’re working really hard.”

Both girls said they and women’s soccer in

general had really developed in the time since they have been with Melbourne Victory.

They said they had always been hopeful of getting a second chance at the highest level in the country.

Team selection and announcement for the Western United squad is still to come, with the Taranto’s saying its now a waiting game to find out whether they will be part of the squad.

Between now and then, the two girls are planning to continue to work hard on their games with Calder United.

Calder currently sits second after nine rounds.

“We’ll focus on what we can do,” they said “Our main goal is Calder and we want to help the club win championships and the league.

“That’s our main focus and then we’ll push for A-League. We need to be in strong form for Calder first.“ Tara Murray

Tough start for Thunder

By Tara Murray Keilor Thunder will take plenty of confidence out of its most recent performances in the National Basketball League 1 South competition.

It’s been a tough start to their first season in the competition, with key players missing multiple matches.

Last Saturday night, the Thunder got their second win of the season against Dandenong Rangers, 85-77.

They suffered a loss the following day to the Nunawading Spectres, 83-65, but showed some good signs in the second half.

Thunder coach Tom Bandilovski said despite splitting the results they were happy with how they had played.

“We were definitely happy,” he said.

“The win especially for the team to get a bit of momentum and confidence. We lost the game to Nunawading but we will take a lot of positives from that.

“They are a powerhouse team and we played really well and won the second half. But we weren’t happy with the result though.”

Bandilovski said the weekend’s matches made them more confident that they could match it with the top sides and with a few more additions in the coming weeks would help.

The side currently sits in 14th position.

The first three rounds, the Thunder played with no imports.

Shayla Cooper had made the trip to Australia and was set to play round one, before personal reasons meant she needed to head back home without playing a game.

Bandilovski said not having imports had impacted their early results.

Christa Reed took to the court for the first time in round four and started in round five.

She top scored in the win against the Rangers with 23 points, but had a poor shooting night against the Spectres.

“Christa is a very good player who has come from the states,” Bandilovski said.

“She’s just finding her feet in the competition.

She comes here from winning a championship in Germany.

“She’s really important to have and it’s slowly coming together. She’s a perfect fit for the team.”

After losing Cooper, the Thunder has been working behind the scenes to secure a second import.

Bandilovski said the new import had arrived in the country and would hopefully take to the court in the next few weeks.

The star for the Thunder in the early rounds is Australian player Maddie Garrick.

Bandilovski said Garrick had been fantastic for the program.

“She has been really professional and has been really good for the players.

and no doubt she is really important.”

The men’s side remains on one win for the season, after losing to both the Rangers and Spectres on the weekend.

The side sits third bottom.

Both sides are back in action this weekend.

They host Ballarat Miners on Saturday night, before travelling to Waverley on Sunday.

Bandilovski said they were hoping to get a good crowd on Saturday night.

Cobras full of belief and having fun Albanvale is focused on taking every opportunity given to them in the Western Region Football League division 3 competition this year.

After two years of interrupted football, the Cobras are back out on the field and enjoying playing.

The focus of the group is showing on the scoreboard, with the side undefeated after six rounds.

Co-coach Andrew Bryson said they were pretty happy and relieved with how the season had panned out so far.

“The last few games have been pretty close, so we’ll take it,” he said.

“We always knew we would be there abouts with the Suns, Sunshine Heights and Braybrook.

“We’re definitely pretty happy with where we are at so far, but there’s still a fair bit of improvement to come.”

Bryson said the biggest thing for the side this season had been the belief in getting the job done each week.

Three of their six wins have been under two goals. He said this time last year, they wouldn’t have been able to get across the line.

“To the players’ credit they’ve found the ability to find a way to win,” he said.

“There’s a real belief in the playing group. There’s a maturity they didn’t have last year.

“They’re looking to make the most of every opportunity that comes our way this year. There’s also a greater balance between youth and experience compared to previous years.“ Bryson said while many from the existing playing group, which they had already rated highly had improved, it had helped having some more experience.

He said the likes of Reece Duffield, Jonathan Miller, Brayden Montebruno, Daniel Montrose, Liam Montrose and Matthew Taylor had really steadied them.

The Cobras had a bye on the weekend.

This Saturday they face Tarneit.

Bryson said the bye had come at the right time. He said he had given the boys a bit of a break, after the hard work they had done in recent rounds.

“We can take a break and reset,” he said. “It’s good to have a chance to reset for the next block of games before the middle part of the season.

Georgies prepare for quarter final challenge Caroline Springs George Cross’s women’s side has nothing to lose in the biggest game of the club’s female program’s short history.

In only their second season, the Georgies will take to the field in the quarter finals of the knockout Nike F.C Cup competition on Wednesday night against National Premier League powerhouse South Melbourne.

Playing in the state league 3 west competition, the Georgies are the lowest ranked team left in the competition.

Georgies technical director John Floros said they will just look to enjoy the moment.

“We are definitely underdogs,” he said. “It’s the biggest match we’ve had.

“We want to play the best competition and there is no one better than South Melbourne, an NPLW team.

“We’ve told the girls to leave everything on the pitch and give everything they have.”

The match is the highlight in what has been a

strong season so far for the women’s side. They were sitting second after five rounds in the state league 3 west competition.

Floros said it was a tough competition with five or six teams fighting for promotion.

While the results are good for the women’s side, the focus is on the overall development of the club’s female program.

COVID-19 has had some impact, with the club set to have a women’s side in 2020, before the season was called off.

“The most important thing is focusing on our program,” Floros said. “I came into the role in October and we were still trying to rebuild after COVID. “We want to build the program and get promoted in the league. We want to put standards in place.

“We’re trying to get positive results, while also developing girls in senior football.”

As well as having a senior side, the club

has under-7, under-8, under-9, under-16s and under-18s girls’ teams.

The senior women are invested in those programs, with several players coaching junior teams.

Floros said it was about giving the young players something to aspire to.

He said while they were thrilled with how the season was going so far, they didn’t want to get too far ahead of themselves, knowing there’s a lot of work to do.

“We’re proud of the girls and how far they’ve come in the Nike Cup and what they’re doing week to week,” he said.

“We want to continue to build this program over the next three to four years and get more people involved.

“We have the facilities here and we’re striving to be the best we can.”

Falcons guts out win

Sports shorts Australia Cup Brimbank Stallions will have to pull off a massive upset if they are to make the national stage of the knock out Australia Cup. The Stallions, one of three state league sides left in the competition, have been drawn to play National Premier League powerhouse Avondale in round seven of the Victorian stage. The Stallions are also one of three Brimbank sides left in the competition. Green Gully will host state league 1 side Whittlesea United, meanwhile Melbourne Knights will host Oakleigh Canons. In the other matches, Bentleigh Greens will host Banyule City and Dandenong Thunder will play Heidelberg United. The matchups will take place on June 14 and 15.

By Tara Murray The City West Falcons nutted out a hard fought win against the Hawks in the Victorian Netball League on Wednesday night.

Having lost the first matchup between the sides, the Falcons were keen to get one back this time round as they start the second round of matchups.

The Falcons would do enough in the last quarter to seal the 59-54 win.

Falcons coach Marg Lind said it wasn’t the best performance they had ever put out on the court, but was happy to take the win.

“It was a lot of up and down the court,” she said. “It wasn’t until the last quarter that we were able to get the flow going.

“It was a really good matchup for us. The first time we played them we caved too easily, so it was a gutsy win by us.

“The Hawks would have been disappointed not to win, as they played well for three quarters.”

Lind said the key to them getting on top in the last quarter was being more patient in attack.

She said they used the circle edge a lot better and made it easier for goal shooter Jane Cook to get the ball, as they were giving too many chances for her opponent to the win the ball.

Lind said wing defence Soli Ropati had a really good start to the last quarter which helped.

“We were going to take Soli off and put on Lucia [Fauonuku] at three quarter time,” she said.

“In hindsight we made the right call and kept faith in her. Soli couldn’t get an intercept all game and there was a three minute period where she got two or three.

“That changed the vibe, after struggling to turn ball over.”

The Falcons had their whole squad available for a rare time this year, with both Collingwood Super Netball players Maggie Lind and Jacqui Newton both taking the court.

While they had their whole squad, Lind said they were a bit more conservative with their rotations with so much on the line.

She said Montana Holmes was the standout especially in the second half, keeping her foot to the pedal all night.

Lind said Uneeq Palavi continues to improve playing at goal attack. She played most of the game there on Wednesday, with Maddy Gray still feeling the effects of the flu.

The Falcons sit second on the ladder, two games behind the Geelong Cougars.

Lind said the win gives them more scope going forward.

“All three ladders are tight,” she said. “We can’t afford to slip up.”

The Falcons division 1 side also had a good win on Wednesday night, turning around their early season loss.

United makes A-League history Tara Murray In just three short years, Western United has become the kings of the A-League men’s competition.

Often criticised both on and off the park, United has continued to build and prove their critics wrong.

They did exactly that on Saturday night in the A-League grand final. Under first year coach John Aloisi, United beat Melbourne City 2-0.

Aleksandar Prijovic was the key man as he flicked on a header that ended in a Nuno Reis own goal in the first two minutes before scoring a second goal on the half hour mark.

Neither team would score in the second half, with United able to celebrate a significant achievement that not many people predicted.

There were heroes all around the ground.

Prijovic would win the Joe Marston Medal, but Neil Kilkenny in the midfield and captain on the day Josh Risdon coming up big when needed.

Chants of John Aloisi rang out around the ground and even by players gate crashing the after game press conference. as the former Socceroo star’s return to coaching was capped off with his first A-League title as a coach.

“The club is only three years old, so to be able to do that, what we did, not only tonight, from the beginning of the season is amazing,” he said.

“It’s an amazing feeling, amazing night so happy for the football club as a whole.”

All season Aloisi and the playing group spoke about belief and the feeling that they could create something special.

While they believed it, not many others did, as they went in as the underdog against both other Melbourne teams in the finals.

Aloisi said for them they just focused on what they could control.

“We never spoke about nobody believing us, we spoke about us believing in ourselves more and about us working towards something,” he said.

“Mindset, process, preparation. We didn’t care what others were saying, if we did I don’t think we would be in that position now.

“We just worried about ourselves, worked hard everyday and we get the reward.”

Having opened the scoring with the quickest goal in grand final history, Aloisi was weary of how the game would play out.

He need not worry, with his side doing as they had so many times this season after scoring early.

Aloisi said they looked dangerous going forward, while also limiting City’s chances.

Prijovic, who signed with the club on a multi-season deal, said there was a real belief in the squad right from the start.

“I would say individual awards are always important as they are achieved as a team,” he said.

“The team has been amazing from the coaching staff to everyone to the fans.

“Everything went our way, we believed in it from the very beginning. As soon as we reached the final it’s going to be tough but we have to take it. Not many believed in us.

“But this is life we believed and it has been a very long way a long year, the game went in our favour “We did a fantastic job today and I think everyone today in the stadium agrees we fully deserve this victory.”

Kilkenny got to share the victory with his family. He had only seen them three weeks in the last six months.

“It’s been a hard slog,” he said on the broadcast. “A lot of sacrifice but we are glad to be here now and to win it, “To share it with your family it’s one of those things.

“The club wants to improve, they’re a club that wants to invest ... it’s one of the best clubs I’ve been at.”

For Aloisi, there was a sense of joy and relief at getting the victory. He admitted that he had his doubts it would ever happen.

“I was sitting in my hospital bed nearly three years ago saying I want to coach, I need to coach, I have a lot more in me,” he said.

“I believed that. I was waiting for the right opportunity and someone giving me that opportunity to coach.

it’s about the team, the club and where we are going as a club “It’s more satisfying when I see all the hard work that goes into a new club. It’s not easy.”

While the celebrations will last for a few weeks, Aloisi said a win like this will only help in the journey of the club.

“What I loved about the players we signed this year, it wasn’t just because they didn’t have anywhere else to go, it’s because they

wanted to create history. They wanted to come and felt that we were going to build something special and we were going challenge and create history and they are their reason we were able to do that.

“Now it might be easier, people will see that we mean business we don’t want to be here just to make up numbers.”
