Lifesavers’ pool skills Three Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong lifesavers will be part of the Victorian state team in the upcoming Australian Pool Lifesaving Championships.

Altona Life Saving Club member Heath Corry and Williamstown Swimming & Life Saving Club members Brydie Logan and Tom Frisby will join the 29 other athletes at the championship in Sydney from Saturday, June 11 to Sunday, June 12.

Life Saving Victoria aquatic sport director Aaron Green congratulated the athletes selected for the Victorian pool lifesaving state and development teams.

“Pool lifesaving has faced two years of interruptions due to COVID-19 restrictions, so I am extremely excited that for the first time since 2019, athletes from around Australia will be able to come together and compete for an Australian pool lifesaving title,” he said.

“Not only are our pool lifesavers top athletes, they are demonstrating valuable rescue skills that they might, and some of our athletes already have, used to save someone’s life.”

Call to rethink stadium

By Laura Michell A Yarraville resident is calling on Maribyrnong council to revisit a proposal to build an indoor sports stadium at McIvor Reserve.

Council is canvassing community views about potentially building a stadium as part of proposed upgrades to the reserve.

According to council’s 2018 Indoor Stadium Strategy, up to a dozen new indoor sports courts need to be built to meet growing demand across the municipality.

Council held two community information sessions last week to garner feedback about how the community uses McIvor Reserve,

what changes it would like to see, and views about the addition of an indoor stadium.

Miles Gilbert, who attended a community information session last Thursday, said that the majority of people in attendance appeared to be opposed to a stadium being built at the park.

He said while he understands there is a need for more indoor sports courts in Maribyrnong, he does not believe the council should construct a stadium on green space.

“Why does council have to build it on a park?” he said.

“They need to revisit the question of whether this is the right way to bring a stadium about.

“A stadium does not need to be located on green space.”

Mr Gilbert said McIvor Reserve was “almost always busy”, with people using it to play sports, work out, walk their dogs and ride bicycles.

“One of the aspects of the park is it has a sense of a sanctuary when you are in it. There are other parks that don’t offer that,” he said.

“Why do they have to diminish a green space when they can work out other ways to [build an indoor sports facility]?”

Mr Gilbert said some people in the community have suggested the council consider housing the stadium in one of the

vacant buildings across the municipality.

Council chief executive Celia Haddock said McIvor Reserve is one of the few locations in the municipality with enough space to accommodate an indoor sports facility “without impacting on continued use by sporting clubs and others who enjoy the space currently”.

“Council has not made any decisions – we are gauging community appetite for the ‘idea’,” she said.

MY VIEW Even though the average life expectancy for community members continues to increase, with those born in 2019 expected to live an additional 30 years compared to those born in 1900 – becoming a Centenarian is still a very rare occurrence. And it’s something I believe is worth celebrating – as a community.

This is why I put forward a Notice of Motion at the May Council Meeting, unanimously passed by my fellow councillors, that we formally recognise anyone in our City who reaches this significant milestone with a letter and certificate from the Mayor to mark their special day. We’ll be inviting family and friends to complete a registration form in advance to support this.

Council raises airport concerns

By Matthew Sims Maribyrnong council has refused to support the proposal of a third runway at Melbourne airport, unless a number of recommendations were addressed.

At its City Development Delegated Committee meeting on Tuesday, May 24, the council passed a motion to endorse its submission to the Melbourne Airport Preliminary Draft Masterplan 2022-2052 and Third Runway Proposal.

Maribyrnong council’s recommendations

included: • Re-examining the options explored for alternatives to a new north-south runway with a focus on reducing noise impacts on long-standing residential communities; • Providing compensation to existing residents to add adequate noise mitigation to protect occupants’ sleep and health prior to the use of the third runway; • Instating a night time curfew on the use of the added north-south runway; • Further investigating the risks of ultra-fine particle pollution; and

• Examining alternatives to air travel, including a high speed rail link along Australia’s eastern and southern coasts.

If approved, the new 3000-metre runway would run parallel to the existing north-south runway and will increase the airport’s capacity by allowing for simultaneous arrivals and departures.

Councillor Michael Clarke said while the third runway would respond to the growing transport needs of Melbourne, a number of other factors needed to be considered.

“I think we also need to be very clear that

there are noise impacts and that is a fact,“ he said.

“Our submission also calls for the air pollution to be addressed as part of any future expansion.”

Cr Bernadette Thomas said the proposals needed more work to ensure pollution and noise level concerns were addressed. She said with no plans for a curfew at this stage, Melbourne Airport should revisit consultation alongside the Albanese government and look at other transport alternatives.

Newport local and small business marketing expert Ailsa Page will be facilitating the Westgate Referral Group workshop.

She said she will be proposing a buddy system, which aims to teach businesses how to network effectively to create lasting relationships.

“So many of us have been working from home for the past two years, it’s time to reconnect and tap into the incredibly

Maribyrnong council has introduced a practice to honour and recognise its centenarians.

During its meeting on Tuesday, May 17, councillor Cuc Lam moved a notice of motion to provide a signed certificate to community members who turn 100.

“Within Maribyrnong, there are 1370 people who are over the age of 85,” she said.

“Maribyrnong City Council will join Glenelg Shire Council as the only local government areas which has a formalised response to recognising this achievement locally.”

C Michael Clarke said the motion represented a shift towards recognising the culture and history told through Maribyrnong’s aged community.

“The council believes in harmony and works so hard towards a harmonious council and a harmonious community,” he said.

“I think this is a motion that is in recognition of the changed state of our community today.

Cr Jorge Jorquera supported the motion but recommended that more extensive work on developing profiles on future centenarians should accompany the practice.

Under the practice, the council would invite residents, family and friends to complete a registration form with a certificate to be issued from the mayor.

Fund Medicare properly: council

By Matthew Sims Maribyrnong council has advocated for more funding for Medicare to allow for continued universal public access to the healthcare system among the rising cost of living.

At its meeting on Tuesday, May 17, councillor Jorge Jorquera moved a notice a motion to: • Acknowledge that many Maribyrnong residents with lower incomes and larger families require appropriate access to bulk-billing medical services; • Support the campaigns of both the Australian Medical Association [AMA] and the Royal Australian College of

General Practitioners [RACGP] to demand increased Medicare funding; and • Write to the federal government and the opposition to urge them to commit to increased Medicare funding.

He said the motion came about as a result of discussions with a number of local health professionals.

“Certainly, in our aged community, it’s becoming a growing issue, among pensioners in particular,” Cr Jorquera said.

He said in some instances, there is a single doctor providing services for more than 6000 patients and earning 40 per cent of what they could be earning in a non bulk billing clinic.

Cr Jorquera said it was essential for council to support the AMA and the RACGP in their efforts.

“I think what’s important about it is, an advocacy voice is all the louder when you’re adding to existing voices,” he said.

Cr Bernadette Thomas said Medicare was an essential part of the healthcare system.

“This is vitally important to not just an individual’s healthcare but an entire family’s healthcare and an entire community’s,” she said.

Cr Michael Clarke spoke for the motion and said that demand is surpassing supply at the moment, especially in the mental healthcare

system.

“Beyond the demand, to make it more difficult again because it’s financially not accessible, that’s untenable in a first world country,” he said.

Maribyrnong mayor Anthony Tran supported the motion and said putting further pressure on the healthcare system among ongoing increases in the cost of living and other financial conditions was a “concoction for disaster”.

Competition judges ‘blown away’ Mount St Joseph Girls’ College’s Erin Godfrey and Footscray High School’s Stanley Webb have advanced onto the finals of the Wynspeak public speaking competition, which tests the skills of secondary school students in Melbourne’s west annually.

Students from Bayside P-12 College, Footscray High School, Mt St Joseph’s Girls’ College, Williamstown High School and Victoria University Secondary College participated in the Hobsons Bay heat on Thursday, May 5 across a junior and a senior category.

Hosted by the Altona City Rotary Club and supported by a grant from the state government’s West Gate Neighbourhood Fund, the Hobsons Bay heat involved competitors presenting on a variety of topics across the five-minute prepared speeches and the two-minute unprepared presentations.

Club community services director Marg O’Neill said the competitors presented well.

“I had the pleasure of adjudicating the Wynspeak public speaking competition, and I was blown away,” she said.

“With teenagers of the calibre I heard

tonight, the future of our country is in good shape.

“They spoke on topics from climate change, child marriage, airplane food, Facebook, profit versus environment, if you had an extra hour each week and lots more.”

Students will compete in the Wynspeak final at Thomas Carr College in Tarneit on Wednesday, June 1.

Hobsons Bay council is hosting a range of events as part of National Reconciliation Week [Friday, May 27 to Friday, June 3].

Hobsons Bay mayor Peter Hemphill said this year’s theme is ’Be Brave.

Make Change’.

“It’s a challenge to all Australians – individuals, families, communities, organisations and government – to be brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can make change for the benefit of all Australians,” he said.

“Council’s Reconciliation Week events aim to raise awareness in the broader community about what reconciliation means to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and how we can all create an inclusive and empowered community, in line with the vision outlined in our Reconciliation Action Plan.”

Local singer-songwriter James Henry will perform some tunes at the Altona Civic Centre on Wednesday, June 1 from 1.30pm until 2pm.

The council is also installing flags designed by artist Aretha Brown emblazoned with ’Womindjeka’ at sites in Melbourne Road in Spotswood, Millers Road in Brooklyn, Kororoit Creek Road in Altona and Queen Street in Altona Meadows.

A variety of former National Resilience Week posters will also be on show at the Williamstown Library until Wednesday, June 22 and at the Altona Civic Centre until Thursday, June 30.

Bernie Finn booted to cross bench by the Libs Western suburbs MP Bernie Finn has been voted out of the parliamentary Liberal party and onto the cross bench for “disrespect”, following anti-abortion social media posts last week.

Mr Finn’s former colleagues voted on the motion in a party room meeting on Tuesday, May 24.

Victorian opposition leader Matthew Guy said the motion was about “respectful discourse”, even citing Mr Finn’s previous posts comparing premier Daniel Andrews to Hitler.

“It’s not about what people are saying, it’s about how it’s said and it’s about behaviour, I think I’ve made that very clear over the last week and a half,” Mr Guy said.

The push comes following Mr Finn’s controversial Facebook posts in which he said he was “praying” for abortion to be banned in Australia, even in the case of rape.

Mr Finn told Star Weekly on Wednesday, May 25, as many as “five, six or seven” parties had approached him since last year, including some “as late as yesterday”. He could not reveal who.

“I’m very seriously thinking about it, I have rejected those approaches up until this point. But of course yesterday puts a totally different complexion on everything,” Mr Finn said.

Following the announcement, footage showed Mr Finn making his way down the parliament steps toward a crowd of cheering supporters.

In a Facebook post later that day, Mr Finn said: “Until relatively recently, such was the strength of my support for Matthew Guy, I would have taken a bullet for him. Today, he

has decided to shoot one of his own through my head. Loyalty is not a word in his lexicon”.

Mr Guy said the decision was “about leadership”.

“I’m concerned about one thing – being a sensible, reasonable, alternative government and that is what we’re going to do, and that is what we are doing. It’s another example today,” Mr Guy said.

Mr Finn said he would make an announcement in “the not too distant future”.

Family ties offer a safe refuge

By Matthew Sims An early morning phone call changed Ukrainian Maryna Karavaieva’s life forever, leading to her and her children fleeing from the central city of Poltava and seeking refuge in Williamstown.

“The war started for me about 5am with the phone call from a girl my husband worked with: “Myrhorod military airdrome is being bombed just now”,” she said.

“It was 125 kilometres from us and 25 kilometres from a place where I spent my childhood with my grandparents.

“I called my relatives in Melitopol, who live just near another one military airdrome, and they said the missiles were falling there at the moment.”

She decided to spend the first night with her husband Valerii, her 13-year-old-son Genya and her six-year-old daughter Anna in the hallway, with mattresses on the floor and most of their belongings moved away from any potential blasts.

“The first night, we were already in the corridor because the rule of two walls can save your life,” Maryna said.

“The first wall takes the hit, the second saves you from the fragments of the bomb.”

Williamstown’s Des Olsen said he and his wife had started to discuss the potential for the family to come to Williamstown as soon as the conflict began in late February.

His wife Helena has maintained a connection to her family in Ukraine, as her uncle is the children’s great-greatgrandfather.

However, the fact that Valerii was not allowed to leave due to being of conscription age meant Maryna did not want to leave yet.

She said the second bombings spurred her and her husband to make the decision to take

“In the beginning of April, it was the second time the missiles bombed our city and the other cities in our region, so we decided that it was time to take the children away to save their lives and not to ruin their psyches,”Maryna said.

“All of us had one backpack [each] with the clothes and documents.

“My backpack was with my photo equipment because I am a photographer and I was planning to do the same here in Australia.”

The family then left on Monday, April 4 and took a 26-hour train trip to the western Ukraine city of Uzhgorod and another nine-hour car trip to Prague before catching a flight to Melbourne, which arrived on Sunday, April 10.

“Since then, we live in a loving and caring

family here in Williamstown,” Maryna said.

“Now, my daughter is already at school together with her Australian cousin and my son is going to start his language school this week, as well as I. “[The] kids like the country very much, they are very excited about the wildlife and natural beauties.”

Maryna said the future was still uncertain.

“The area is still comparatively calm but nobody can tell where the missile falls down the next day,” she said.

“My husband continues working for a logistics company he worked for before the war started, but they cut the wages in half and increased the amount of working hours from 40 to 60 per week.”

Maryna said she hoped for peace in Ukraine as soon as possible.

“This morning, my son told me that his

friend sent him a message that yesterday his cousin and her family all died because of a bomb in [the] Zaporizhean region.

“Three of my cousins defend our country in war now and I want all [of] this [to] stop and people [to] come back to their families safe and alive.”

Maryna said she was grateful for the support she and her family had received.

“The only thing I can say that I believe that nothing happens by chance,” she said.

“It was kind of a destiny that brought us here.

“So I will try to do my best to become a good participant of Australian society for the time we are going to spend here.”

Des said the family were appreciative of all of the help towards creating a comfortable environment for Maryna, Yevhenii and Anna, including the Williamstown Uniting Church and the pledge from the Williamstown Rotary Club for a computer for Genya to use during his high school education.

“We would like to thank our various friends and relatives who helped us finance the cost of bringing the family to Australia and helping us settle them in,” he said.

Maryna said the amount of support from the Williamstown community has been especially beneficial.

“It was a surprise that some people from the neighbourhood made us some welcome presents,” she said.

“The director of the ballet school in Williamstown was very kind to us and allowed my daughter to attend the classes for free until we get settled.

“So I want to say thank you very much for all the people who helped us anywhere on our way.”

The redeveloped Altona Tennis Club courts have been unveiled following a $2.6 million major upgrade.

The upgrade includes five clay profile synthetic courts, surface renewal of six En Tout Cas courts, new flood lighting, an irrigation system, spectator facilities and a new book-a-court system.

The project was funded as part of Sport and Recreation Victoria’s Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program, with a $1 million contribution from the state government and a $1.6 million contribution from council.

Hobsons Bay mayor Peter Hemphill said the new courts would be open for casual access by the community when they were not in use by the tennis club.

“We are looking forward to seeing the newly resurfaced courts being put to good use by the Altona Tennis Club and also the broader community,” he said.

“Team sports are not for everyone as they can require a significant commitment in terms of time. With very few barriers to entry, tennis provides a great sporting activity for those who are time poor. All you need is a racquet and a friend.”

Altona Tennis Club president Jerome Champetier de Ribes said he was “immensely thankful to council and the state government for making this happen”.

The courts are currently open for Altona Tennis Club members with casual community bookings expected to commence in July or August.

Police have charged a 20-year-old Braybrook man and four other men with an array of offences following an alleged robbery in Southbank on Tuesday, May 24. According to a Victoria Police spokesperson, a group of six males allegedly approached a 26-year-old man at Southern Cross station and then took the man to Batman Park, where the alleged incident took place. “A 20-year-old Braybrook man was charged with robbery, theft, intentionally cause injury, recklessly cause injury, violent disorder, affray and assault in company,” the spokesperson said.

Up for a chat?

By Matthew Sims ’Once a Willy kid, always a Willy kid’ has been the catch cry for Williamstown Primary School pupils for a number of years.

The school celebrated the 116th anniversary of the opening of its red brick building, which was opened as an infant school in 1906, on Monday, May 23.

As part of Education Week [May 22-28], the school has looked back on its history and legacy ahead of 150th anniversary celebrations next year.

Williamstown historian Brian Haynes said the school was launched in 1873 in the Williamstown Mechanics Institute following the implementation of the Education Act in late 1872, which brought in the state school system.

“Many children received little or no education prior to the state school system and there was a fear of the ‘gutter children’ over-taxing the new school system,” he said.

Acting principal Mathew Montebello said the school had a colourful story to tell over its 149 years, including one of the buildings being chosen as a hospital to treat victims of the Spanish flu epidemic in 1919.

“The school itself has a huge amount of history,” he said.

Within the first few days, there were 24 patients severely ill and around 72 patients were treated during the pop-up hospital’s seven weeks of operation.

Mr Montebello said a group of staff members have been at the school for a number of years, including principal Andrea Duxson [13 years], Marina Robb, Jo Wilson, Robin Nankivell, Rochelle White, Mary Colangelo and himself [22 years].

“There’s a number of kids where I taught their parents,” he said.

An ex-student himself, Mr Haynes said it was a common occurrence to see four or five generations of the same family attend the school.

“I was a student in the mid-1960s and my children attended from 1991 to 2001,” he said.

Education Minister James Merlino said Education Week was a chance for all within the education system to celebrate the past, present and future of Victoria’s connections to

teaching and learning.

“I encourage every student, parent, carer, teacher, and educator to take part in the variety of events and activities being held across the state,” he said.

Ahead of 150th anniversary celebrations next year, the Department of Education has organised a digital time capsule full of photos, reports or other trivia, with anyone welcome to send their memories to 150years@education. vic.gov.au.

Yarraville residents are encouraged to have a chat and watch a movie with fellow community members as part of an upcoming Yarraville Community Centre [YCC] event.

YCC project co-ordinator Bettina Twyman said the group usually meets every Wednesday at 2pm.

“YCC’s Chatty Cafe started online during lockdowns and is now growing to enjoy being back face-to-face meetups over a cup of tea,” she said.

“Our focus is to provide social meetings that enable people to engage in new friendships and deeper connections with our community.”

Land prices continue to escalate Lot prices have continued to rise and median land sizes reached new lows in the Footscray and Laverton areas, a recent report has revealed.

Compiled by RPM Group, the data highlighted Melbourne’s greenfield property sector performance for the first quarter of 2022 [January to March].

According to the report, areas in the western growth corridor, including Footscray and Laverton, had an 8.1 per cent median lot price increase to $359,000, with the lowest land size totalling 356 square meters.

To make the most of lot size decreases, RPM Group project marketing managing director Luke Kelly said most owners were turning to more innovative methods.

“If there’s smaller lots on the market and that’s all I can get, what do I need to do? I’m gonna go double storey rather than single storey. So I can pick up a smaller lot and still get a big house on it,” he said.

“You can still get a big house on it, it’s a little more expensive than building a single storey but it outweighs and balances it up because you’re taking a smaller lot by not spending as

much on a bigger block, you can spend a little bit more on your house.”

Mr Kelly said the amenities and infrastructure in the west was a prime reason the western corridor continued to dominate sales in growth areas, recording 43 per cent of total sales.

“There’s been a great focus on government and local councils ..…. to get things going,” he said.

“Because the infrastructure is continuing to grow, they’ve given great amenity in new areas that perhaps they haven’t had in the past, it’s

become a good and attractive place to live.”

The data also suggested more people were foregoing renting and opting to purchase a house instead.

Mr Kelly said this choice was more “cost effective”.

“You had the opportunity to save a deposit, which a lot of people have over the last two years because they’ve been saving money with COVID,” he said.

“If you’re renting and you rent around $20,000 a year, why not have mortgages worth $20,000 a year and have an asset.”

Storytime branches out to inspire little readers Families across the west made their way to the library on Wednesday, May 25 to mark National Simultaneous Story Time.

The event, which is in its 22nd year, is run annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Its aim is to gather one million children from around the country and the world to read the same chosen picture book at the same time.

This year’s book was ‘The Family Tree’

by Josh Pyke. The story is told from the perspective of a tree who starts as a seed and narrates its own life-span as it grows alongside the family whose yard it is in.

As some of the littlest Hobsons Bay residents imagined the concept of something so small, growing into something so big, participants were gifted seeds from a local Indigenous

plant, Linum marginale (commonly known as Native Flax) from council’s conservation team, as well as a native sapling from the urban forest team, to take home and grow in their own gardens.

What do you love about where you live?

I spent almost all of my life growing up and living in the west and now I’m working here locally as well. I feel a very special bond to this side of town having grown up here. I’ve witnessed all the suburbs grow and develop.

I love the diverse multiculturalism that has transformed the western suburbs over the years, with wonderful ethnic cultures, shops and restaurants, the familiarity of the suburbs,

How would you describe your connection to Maribyrnong and the west?

My family came to Australia as refugees in the early ‘80s from Vietnam when I was six and we have lived in the western suburbs of Melbourne for more than 40 years until now. I grew up locally around the Footscray and St Albans area. I did all my schooling in the western suburbs. I went to Footscray North Primary School and Marian College in West Sunshine, before attending MacRobertson Girls High School in my senior years. After graduating from medicine at Monash University, I returned to the west to work mainly at Western Health. After completing my specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Royal Women’s Hospital, Mercy Hospital for Women and at Sunshine Hospital, I worked as a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Sunshine Hospital and Werribee Mercy Hospital.

I’m now consulting in private practice in Maribyrnong, but I travel all over the west suburbs to see patients. I joined Monash IVF over 10 years ago, and I’m now mainly based at the Monash IVF Sunshine clinic, helping women and couples achieve their dreams of becoming parents. I’m passionate about all aspects of fertility, including male infertility issues. I especially want to ensure that young women from all ethnic backgrounds are aware of and can readily access treatment options they require, including IVF, egg freezing and donor sperm. I’ve helped many couples and individuals in the west become parents and I’ve delivered quite a few of their babies over the years too!

the friendly people and the ethnic communities here. Where else would I rather be but the west?

My brother is also a doctor practicing in the west as well.

How has your Vietnamese background informed your life and work?

There weren’t many ethnic kids at school back in the days of the early 80s, until at least the 90s where waves of immigrants from diverse ethnic backgrounds started arriving. However, my parents tried to keep our Vietnamese traditions and taught us our cultures and language at home. My siblings and I attended Vietnamese schools locally on the weekends. I’m glad I did because I can now write and converse in fluent Vietnamese. As an adult, my background has allowed me to provide healthcare to patients from a range of backgrounds. Being a migrant myself, I appreciate other cultures and their traditions, and I am acutely aware of the stigmas that unfortunately still exist when it comes to fertility treatment. Being aware of these challenges allows me to advocate on behalf of patients and help them navigate any obstacles they may face. As the only Vietnamese speaking fertility specialist in Victoria, and probably in Australia, it also helps that I speak the language fluently as I can connect with not just my Vietnamese patients, but also their families and other Vietnamese speaking doctors in the area.

Where is your favourite local place to spend time?

Highpoint Shopping Centre. I never get sick of Highpoint. I used to get taken to Highpoint by

my parents every weekend growing up. Now I pop into Highpoint at least a few times a week for grocery shopping, clothes shopping and my children love to even just window shop or eat at the food courts. My children also love their weekly trip to the local Maribyrnong library, to browse through the books. As for myself, I love the cafes and restaurants in front of my clinic in the Edgewater Estate. But my favourite cafes and restaurants locally where I spend a lot of time are The Boathouse and Feekah in Moonee Ponds and Old Man Drew in Ascot Vale.

What have you loved most about your work?

I feel like I have been blessed to have a career where I can create lives and help bring lives into the world, help women and couples achieve their dreams of becoming parents and having a family. This is the most rewarding aspect of my career. I also feel very privileged that women, especially women of ethnic backgrounds, feel comfortable to consult with me about their general gynaecological issues which is quite a personal issue.

Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you.

When I’m not consulting, looking sophisticated and wearing my corporate attire, I’m a mother running around after two young kids in activewear. A lot of my patients don’t recognise me when they bump into me in the shopping centre. When I’m not in the rooms consulting or in the hospital performing surgery, egg pick-ups or doing embryo transfers, I’m a health fanatic. I cycle 20 kilometres a day, rain or shine.

United overcame Melbourne Victory in the A-League Men semi final on May 21 to book a spot in the May 28 grand final against Melbourne City.

Star Weekly spoke to fans – many of whom have supported United since its inception three years ago – about their love for the team from the west.

The Camilleri family Hillside’s Leanne Camilleri and her daughters Shanae and Sharna have been fans of the club since “the very beginning”.

The girls play for Calder United football club. “When something came to the west, we had to start following them,” Ms Camilleri said.

She said the last week of anticipation had been “crazy” in the lead up to the final.

“They’ve done well every year … but to finally get to the final is great,“ she said.

“It’s just really good when we all get together, all the fans get together, we’re all sitting near each other with adrenaline and excitement. It’s fun supporting the team.”

Jenni Woollam says her family, from Hoppers Crossing, have been members “from day one”.

“My husband Michael was a previous Melbourne Victory fan ... when he found out that we were going to have a club in the west, he immediately sort of jumped ship and said ’nah, we’re gonna support our local,” Ms Woollam said. “[He] sort of dragged us along in the beginning ... but immediately felt connected to the Western United Football Club, it was something that brought our whole family together.”

“We are excited for the big grand final, it’s going to be great,” Hilda Vergles said.

She said it was great to have witnessed the club grow from the beginning.

“It’s been phenomenal, we’re just so proud of all the people involved with the club,” she said. “It is just amazing and gives us

something in the west to be so proud of.”

Ms Vergles said she loved supporting the club with her children as it reminded her of her own youth and how soccer brought families together.

“It’s a beautiful thing, to share that with my family is even more important because when I was growing up, I had my clubs that I was a part of with my family and I still hold those memories very, very dear to me.”

The Antonypillai family has been supporting Western United ever its incepetion Since the beginning United have been using City Vista Recreation Reserve, the home of Caroline Springs George Cross and also Roman and Ronald’s junior club as a training venue.

This has given the young fans a close look at the exciting players United have have over the year’s including their favourite, goalkeeper Jamie Young.

Asked about what he likes the most about Western United, Ronald said: “That they made the finals and that they’re my favourite team in the A-League.”

Mother Monia gave credit to coach John Aloisi who is in his first year as coach of the club.

She was proud of the team’s ability to perform without a star player.

“Coaches are very good, especially the boys, they are doing very good now,” she said. “We don’t have Diamanti on board but the boys are still giving 100 per cent.”

The boys said it was nice to have a team representing where they live doing well in the competition

Point Cook’s Miriam Spiess believes Western United are the A-League’s underdogs.

“They wrote off our coach John Aloisi, wrote off our club for the the finals, not oneexpertpickedustobeatMelbourneVictory,” she said.

“We love being underestimated.”

The Howie family The Howie family from Kurunjang loves to get behind the green and black and had all their best fan apparel ready to go for the big match.

Craig Howie said he had fond memories of taking his daughter and niece to a match after they’d attended a school holiday program when one of the players had remembered them and thanked them for coming to watch.

“Ever since then, they’ve been hooked,” Mr Howie said. “It’s a great family team.”

Ms Spiess said she enjoys watching games with her friend, Bec Smith, and both families love the club, and the Unitedfamily.

“People in the west should get behind the team so they can say ‘I was there for the first grand final win’,” she said.

John Coumans, 11, was supposed to be on school camp this week, but decided to stay home, fearing he would catch COVID and miss out on attending the game.

“He was supposed to go on camp but there’s been a lot of COVID at school and he was worried about getting it and having to be in isolation and not being able to attend the grand final,” mum Rachael said.

“He made the decision to lay low this week. He was disappointed but we’ve followed Western since the beginning.”

Rachael’s three boys, John, Phillip and Aiden love the atmosphere that The Western Service Crew creates and know all the songs and chants and are more than happy to sit right in the middle of the active supporters group.

“They are absolutely stoked,” she said.

“We were shocked that we won on Saturday but the result was magnificent. We all agreed it was the best game we have been to.”

The boys, from St Albans Park in Geelong, feel welcomed into the green and black family.

“We went to Tassie for the two games they had down there,” Rachael said.

“The players have just been so lovely. In fact the whole club has been amazing.”

Give blood so others may live Australian Red Cross Lifeblood is putting a call out for new and former blood, plasma and platelets donors across the western and northern suburbs of Melbourne to step up as cancellations remain at 50 per cent and need for blood products is the highest it has ever been, as Matthew Sims discovers.

ifeblood donor services executive director Cath Stone said the past two years had been difficult for the organisation.

“It’s definitely pretty challenging at the minute and probably has been since the start of the pandemic,” she said.

“As lockdowns have eased off … donors have found other places to be, people have been sick with COVID, they’re now getting sick with the flu, flying and visiting relatives.”

Ms Stone said there have been a number of shifts coming out of the pandemic in terms of the availability of donors to come in and donate.

“What we’re seeing during the pandemic is certainly a change in the seasonal behaviour of our donors,” she said. “There hasn’t been a lot of cold and flu the last couple of years because we’ve all been locked down.

“We know we’ve got, I think, a particularly challenging winter ahead of us.”

Ms Stone said while demand requirements were about 29,000 donations a week two years ago, the organisation now required about 33,000 donations a week.

“That jump has been quite astronomical in the last couple of years,” she said. “What we are keeping an eye on is just that ongoing demand as people are still catching up on the surgeries that they deferred during the lockdowns.

“Our need for whole blood is the highest level that we’ve seen it in over 10 years.”

Ms Stone said the organisation aimed to have three days of supply of all blood types in its manufacturing centre in Melbourne’s west.

“We hold it so that we can meet patient demand at the minute,” she said.

Ms Stone said 11 million Australians were currently eligible to donate but just 500,000 donate blood, plasma or platelets.

“We would like to grow that number this year by about 150,000 new donors to really help ease off some of the pressures, particularly on our whole blood donors,” she said.

“I think they had the mobile blood banks at university,” she said.

Ms Smith said she saw her donations as volunteer work.

“I like to do it because it’s helping other people,” she said.

Initially donating blood, Ms Smith has now been donating plasma for the past 15 years at a number of donation centres, including the Airport West centre.

“I find it very easy to do,” she said. “It’s nice to think other people are benefiting.”

Ms Smith said almost anyone can donate and it is quick and painless.

“The staff are very helpful,” she said.

Donors can make three different types of donations when they visit a donation centre.

Whole blood donations take about 15 minutes, but donors must wait three months between donations.

In terms of plasma, donors can donate for about 45 minutes every two weeks because the red blood cells are transported back into the body and less recovery time is needed.

Plasma products last for about 42 days, while platelets only last for seven days.

Platelets are used for trauma events, clotting issues and cancer treatments and can only be given by men who have donated plasma before.

Ms Stone said they were hoping for a number of donors to roll up their sleeves across the Werribee, Airport West and Bundoora centres during June, as well as at the Sunshine, Melton and Williamstown pop-up centres.

“We need just over 3000 whole blood appointments on its own,” she said.

“You can almost double that if we’re thinking about plasma as well.

Ms Stone said donated blood could travel anywhere in the country.

“You may come in and do a donation at Werribee, it could end up at Royal Melbourne,” she said. “Just as equally, it could be sent right up to far north Queensland depending on your blood type and what availability is needed.”

Ms Stone said centres were still experiencing a 50 per cent cancellation rate of appointments.

“What is very difficult to do is to replace appointments on the day,” she said.

Ms Stone said everyone should consider donating blood if they are eligible to do so.

“One in three of us will need it our lifetime,” she said. “You don’t want it to be today that you find out need it, but you didn’t know that it was part of the critical supply of the nation’s healthcare system.”

Ms Stone said the Lifeblood team was looking forward to National Blood Donor Week [June 13-19] and World Blood Donor Day [June 14].

“What we do see is a rally cry around blood donation and education,” she said.

“It’s always a good week for us in June and it really gives us a bit of a lift.”

Ms Stone said the Lifeblood team was grateful for donors in Melbourne’s west.

“The key message from us is always a thank you for the support,” she said.

“We need to make donation accessible.

“Most of our metro centres are now open seven days a week, later in the evenings.”

Ms Stone said anyone who may have been ineligible a few years ago should look again at the eligibility requirements.

“If you thought you were ineligible, always check.

“We are constantly reviewing and updating our eligibility rules.”

“If you’re between 18 and 76, feel fit and healthy, check online or give us a call and we’d love to see you in centre if you are eligible.”

Lifeblood spokesperson Genevieve Dobson said increased accessibility to a donation time slot for people in Melbourne’s west has arrived, with the Werribee donation centre now open every day of the week.

“Werribee has been operating six days a week but the feedback we’ve had from donors is they would like more opportunities and flexibility,” she said. “We anticipate the extended opening hours will enable Lifeblood to collect an additional 50 to 60 donations every week, which is great news for patients.”

Ms Dobson said there were about 500 appointments to fill in the first week of June.

“The centre has recently undergone a facelift, with additional couches and an open and inviting space to help enhance the donation experience,” she said.

The Williamstown pop-up donation centre at the Williamstown Town Hall will be open every day from Monday, June 20 until Friday, July 1.

The Melton pop-up donation centre at the Melton Community Centre will be open every day from Monday, June 6 until Friday, June 17.

The Sunshine pop-up donation centre at the Croatian Catholic Centre will be open from Monday, July 4 to Friday, July 8.

Hard fought win for City West Falcons The City West Falcons nutted out a hard fought win against the Hawks in the Victorian Netball League on Wednesday night.

Having lost the first matchup between the sides, the Falcons were keen to get one back this time round as they start the second round of matchups.

The Falcons would do enough in the last quarter to seal the 59-54 win.

Falcons coach Marg Lind said it wasn’t the best performance they had ever put out on the court, but was happy to take the win.

“It was a lot of up and down the court,” she said. “It wasn’t until the last quarter that we were able to get the flow going.

“It was a really good matchup for us. The first time we played them we caved too easily, so it was a gutsy win by us.

“The Hawks would have been disappointed not to win, as they played well for three

quarters.”

Lind said the key to them getting on top in the last quarter was being more patient in attack.

She said they used the circle edge a lot better and made it easier for goal shooter Jane Cook to get the ball, as they were giving too many chances for her opponent to the win the ball.

Lind said wing defence Soli Ropati had a really good start to the last quarter which helped.

“We were going to take Soli off and put on Lucia [Fauonuku] at three quarter time,” she said.

“In hindsight we made the right call and kept faith in her. Soli couldn’t get an intercept all game and there was a three minute period where she got two or three.

“That changed the vibe, after struggling to turn ball over.”

The Falcons had their whole squad available for a rare time this year, with both Collingwood Super Netball players Maggie Lind and Jacqui Newton both taking the court.

While they had their whole squad, Lind said they were a bit more conservative with their rotations with so much on the line.

She said Montana Holmes was the standout especially in the second half, keeping her foot to the pedal all night.

Lind said Uneeq Palavi continues to improve playing at goal attack. She played most of the game there on Wednesday, with Maddy Gray still feeling the effects of the flu.

The Falcons sit second on the ladder, two games behind the Geelong Cougars.

Lind said the win gives them more scope going forward.

“All three ladders are tight,” she said. “We can’t afford to slip up.”

Footy dream is on track

By Tara Murray Western Jets star Charlotte Baskaran knows that she did everything she could this year to get picked in the AFLW draft.

Having been one of the standouts heading into this year, the Caroline Springs resident enhanced her draft prospects.

She led the Jets to their first NAB League premiership, while finishing second in the league best and fairest award and named captain of the team of the year.

Baskaran was also part of the Vic Metro squad and the AFLW national academy.

Speaking at last week’s AFLW draft combine, she said she was excited about what was to come in the coming months.

“It will be a dream come true,” she said of getting drafted.

“I’ve thought about this moment for years since I first started footy. It’s going to be the best thing ever.

“It’s a nervous wait, but it’s super exciting. I can’t wait. I’ll be doing as much as I can before the draft to get ready.”

Having been a keen netballer and state athletics champion, Baskaran turned to football when she was 16 and never looked back.

She said she loved everything about the sport.

“I loved netball and athletics too,” she said.

“When I started footy, I loved the team environment and the team aspect of it. I loved training and meeting a lot of new people. I decided to stick at footy and now I’m here.”

The Maribyrnong College student soon joined the Jets and was one of the stand out players in the competition.

She said it was bittersweet that her time at the Jets was coming to an end.

“I don’t think I could have done anything more this year,” she said. “I was really happy and to top it off with a premiership win at the Jets.

“I was at the Jets for quite a while. The west has always had a stigma that we weren’t necessarily the best and to cap it off winning the premiership was amazing.”

Since the end of the NAB League season, Baskaran has been flat out with her football

commitments.

She was part of the national championships, before playing for the academy in an young guns game a couple of weeks ago.

An ankle injury in that game meant she couldn’t do the two-kilometre time trial at the combine.

“I was looking forward to running the two k, surprisingly,” she said.

“Now it’s about getting my ankle back to 100 per cent and doing rehab and a bit of upper body training.

“I’m still doing as much as I can and not lose any fitness. I want to keep that positive mindset.”

Baskaran said she had been speaking to AFLW clubs in recent weeks and was enjoying the process.

The year 12 student said she was keen to get started in the next stage of her football career.

“It’s pretty cool,” she said.

It’ll be about finding that balance is going to be very important but I think I can do that. I’m just looking forward to getting into a club.”

The Imperials announce new leaders Williamstown Imperials believe they have the perfect combination to lead them into next season’s Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3 season.

The club took to social media last week to announce that Ken Purves would take on the senior head coaching role, while Scott Phillips will captain the first XI. Purves has long been associated with the club.

“Ken Purves moves up the coaching ranks at the Imps to take the reins as senior head coach for season 2022-23,” a post from the club said.

“Ken has been involved at the club for several years as a junior coach, senior player and mentor and will bring his wealth of knowledge and expertise to the senior group.

“Ken has a Level 2 Cricket Australia coaching accreditation to go along with his Level 1 strength and conditioning accreditation, Level 1 Triathlon Australia accreditation and Level 2 Athletics Australia accreditation.

“No stranger then to athletic performance, Ken brings an edge to his role of coach demanding accountability from players across all grades.

“Here’s to Kenny driving the club to a bright future.”

Phillips will lead the on field side of things, He joined the club last season, having been a six-time premiership player, two-time premiership captain and two-time premiership coach “Honing his craft at Frankston Peninsula in [Victorian] Premier Cricket, Scott played 53 first XI games before becoming somewhat of a cult figure in cricket scenes around the Mornington Peninsula, captaining and coaching at various clubs until he finally made Williamstown Imperials his home in 2021-22,” the post said.

“An Eddie Marr Trophy winner in his first season at the Imps coupled with the deserved respect of his peers make Scott the perfect candidate to lead this club to success in 2022-23.”

The Imperials finished fourth in the 2021-22 season.

Footscray United signs up former West Indian Footscray United isn’t moving into the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 2 competition quietly, having signed former West Indian international Daren Ganga for next season.

The club announced on Sunday that Ganga had committed to the club in a massive boost for it and the competition.

Ganga, now 43, played 48 test matches for the West Indies, along with 35 one-day internationals and one T20 match.

He made back-to-back centuries against Australia during his career.

“Daren’s attitude towards local cricket and developing cricket in the area as well as bringing the cricket events to the community has really impressed us and we cannot wait to announce some exciting events and cricket programs in the very near future,” the post said.

United captain-coach Shafraz Mohamed said this was one of the biggest signings in the whole VTCA. “It has been a work in progress. I’ve known him for a couple of years,” he said.

“He lives two streets from our ground. We brought him down to the club and he saw what direction the club has been going the last couple of years.

“He’s now relocating fully to Australia. For us to get a full season out of him is massive.

“We’ve seen him in the nets and it blew us all away. We thought, that is what a 48 test player looks like.”

Mohamed said Ganga shared their vision for the future to help the club continue through the ranks into senior division.

As well as playing for Footscray United, Ganga will run his cricket academy in the area.

Mohamed said he hoped it would get more kids into the sport.

“He will set up base camp location out of Footscray United.

“There’s a lot of young kids who want to play sport, but that’s been neglected. The main aim is to get kids passionate about the game and it’s a great initiative for the local club to learn from him.”

The club has also signed Nilanka Premaratne, who has played for Sri Lanka A.

They are set to announce another signing in the coming weeks.

Mohamed said they were keen to have an impact in division 2 after winning the division 3 premiership last season.

“I think we will give it a good shake this year,” he said.

“We don’t want to come up and survive.

I have played in the senior competition with Keilor and I want this club to look like that.”

Magpies building nicely

VFL Footscray proved too strong for Williamstown in the Victorian Football League on Saturday. It was an even first quarter, before the Bulldogs started to kick away. They were able to extend the margin in every quarter, winning 19.7 (121)-8.7 (55). Jamarra Ugle-Hagan kicked six goals for the Bulldogs, while Darcy Fritsch kicked three for the Seagulls. The Bulldogs sit 15th and the Seagulls sit second bottom.

By Tara Murray Parkside has bounced back from its first loss of the season in the perfect way in the Western Region Football League division 2 competition.

After losing in the top of the table clash the previous round, the Magpies showed why they’re one of the teams to beat this season against Wyndhamvale.

The Magpies led at every break in the 14.15 (99)-7.6 (48).

Magpies coach Chris Muratore said they were really pleased with the match.

“Every time we played them it has been a great game,” he said. “We have a lot of respect for them on and off the field.

“It was good to get back on the winners list after losing the week before.

“We were wasteful in front of goal, but we controlled most of the day especially in the mid and forward half of the ground.

“We’ll take a 51-point win every week.”

Nathan Montague kicked four goals in the win, while Jy Lambley and Brent Kelly kicked two goals each. Jonah Vraca was named the Magpies best.

The win cements the Magpies second spot on the ladder, two games clear of third placed North Footscray.

Muratore said they had started the year exactly like they had wanted to.

“It’s been a great start to the year,” he said.

“We wanted to get as many wins on the board early, with not knowing what the year would look like after the last couple of years.

“We’re one week away from the break and we would like to get one more win on the board heading into it.

“We’re confident in what we have done and we know there is still work that we need to do.

We’ll look at things that don’t work and things we can improve on.”

Muratore said not having as many injuries as last season had helped them play some more consistent football.

While sitting pretty in the top two, Muratore knows the work has only just begun.

“Being able to play together every week and backup games and work on things that we have been wanting to work on in the last couple of seasons has really helped” he said.

“As a whole we can still get better. We’ve turned over 40 players in the last three years and we’ve only played 10 to 12 games together.

“We want to continue to improve the connection between the backs, mids and forwards. You only get better playing together and we’re hoping to peak at the right time.”

The Magpies face Albion on Saturday, before a division wide bye for the Queen’s Birthday weekend.

NPL Altona Magic had a tough Saturday night against Green Gully in the National Premier League competition.

The Cavaliers scored two first half goals to take control of the game, before scoring another two after the break, to get a 4-0 win. The Magic sit 11th on the ladder. This week they face the Eastern Lions.

VAFA Williamstown CYMS fell short against Beaumaris in the Victorian Amateur Football League premier B on Saturday. Beaumaris started the game well with 12 first quarter scoring shots and were able to build from there going on to win 20.20 (140)-11.9 (75). Nicholas Ebinger kicked four goals. The CYs sit eighth.

AFLW Western Bulldogs premiership forward Brooke Lochland is headed to Sydney for the next AFLW season. Lochland, who played 35 games for the Bulldogs, has signed with the Swans as an expansion pick. “I’m incredibly sad to say goodbye to the Bulldogs – to leave as a premiership player after six seasons and 35 games is more than I could have hoped for when I first came to the club back in 2016,” Lochland said. “It is a bittersweet feeling to be moving clubs, but I am looking forward to the next chapter of my life in Sydney with a great job opportunity and the chance to build a life for myself post-football.”

Yarraville Glory to build in second half of season Yarraville Glory is hoping a bit of luck will go its way in the second half of the FV state league 1 north-west season.

Glory sit in seventh spot at the midpoint of the season, with four wins and three draws from their 11 matches.

They are just six points back from second placed Banyule City, with Caroline Springs George Cross the run away leader.

Coach Paul Agathouli said the season hadn’t quite got to plan so far.

“It’s been an unfortunate season,” he said.

“We’ve had so many out with COVID and long term injuries. Season ending injuries.

“We’ve been unfortunate with that, but we are quite satisfied with where we are at the moment, considering everything.”

Agathouli said despite dropping a few games they shouldn’t have, they felt like they were closing the gap on the top sides which they had set out to do in the pre-season.

He said they were expecting a better second half to the season and would hopefully be in the mix for second spot.

“I think with a healthier squad in the second half of the season, we should be better,” he said.

“With the few additions we’ve added in the last few weeks for the three players we lost with season ending injuries.

“We will get three or four players back from long term injuries in the next fortnight, so hopefully we will pick up a lot more points.”

On Saturday, Glory faced one of the sides above them in Brimbank Stallions.

Glory opened the scoring in the 61st minute through Daniel Parkinson. The Stallions levelled the scores in the 76th minute.

The match would end in a 1-1 draw.

Agathouli said it was a match they should have won.

“We were the better side by far.”

In other results, Altona City beat Corio 3-0, scoring all three goals in the second half. Luc Doherty scored all three goals in the win.

Altona City sits in sixth spot.

In state league 2 north-west, Altona East Phoenix beat Geelong Rangers, 2-1.

The winner came in the 92nd minute, through Joshua Kelic scoring his second goal.

The win moves the Phoenix up to fourth spot.

In state league 3 north-west, Williamstown drew with Sunbury United 1-1, while Altona North lost to Westvale, 2-1.

While in state league 4 west , Laverton beat Surf Coast 5-1, Melbourne City was too strong for Spring Hills, winning 4-2 and Barnstoneworth beat Greenvale United, 1-0.

In state league 5 west, Maribyrnong Greens lost to Melton Phoenix 4-0 and Maidstone United lost to Barwon, 5-2.

Season ends for Gulls

By Tara Murray Williamstown’s final round loss to Hawthorn summed up its Victorian Football League Women’s season to a tee.

The Seagulls suffered a 14-points loss to finals bound Hawthorn, but like in many of their matches they were right in the contest.

Having just won two games for the season, Seagulls coach Penny Cula-Reid said the season would go down as a frustrating one.

“We had opportunities to win games, but didn’t have the ability to win them,” she said.

“We competed all season. We had injuries to big name players and we had kids stand up and play a few more games than we could have expected.

“We started to find out who we want to be as a club and program, shame it happened so late in the season.”

Cula-Reid said not having a proper pre-season had hurt them with a number of COVID incidents, not allowing the group to build up their fitness base.

She said reflecting back the season overall wasn’t too bad, but it wasn’t where they needed to be.

Some of the highlights of the season included the development of a number of players, especially late in the piece.

Cula-Reid was thrilled with how some of the girls had stepped up.

“Danika Di Santo came in late in the season,” she said. “She’s a midfielder but we knew she wouldn’t get many opportunities in our midfield.

“We decided to have a look at her in our backline and really stood up doing everything we asked.

“Ellie Celland is a utility who did really well.

“Some of our recruits as well. Cassie McWilliam is from the Northern Territory.

When she got an opportunity in the forward line she was good along with Sophia McCarthy.

“We called them the Mac attack. It really came together towards the back end of the season. If we had a couple more weeks it could have been a different story.”

On Saturday against the Hawks, the Seagulls lost 5.7 (37)-3.56 (23).

Cula-Reid said they showed some good signs, but weren’t able to get the job done.

“We weren’t able to run out the last quarter,” she said.

“Their senior more experienced players finished off the game better. It was a 14 point loss against a side that could play off in the grand final.”

Cula-Reid said their inability to put scoreboard pressure on despite having a similar number of inside 50s was again something that hurt them against the Hawks.

She said that would be one area they would look to work on in the off season, with the hope to bring back the core group again.

With the season coming to an end, several Williamstown players will find themselves on AFLW lists with the draft this month.

Aimee Whelan has already signed with Sydney. Cula-Reid said being pathway club for the AFLW, it was a win-win for the club any player being picked up.

Altona Gators have set a platform to launch from in the second half of the Big V division 2 men’s season.

The Gators sit 8-5 after 10 rounds, having had a mixture of results.

Playing coach Jordan Lino said while they would have liked to be sitting higher on the ladder, they were still pretty happy with how things were going.

“We have started to put together a few good performances,” he said. “We were late in forming the team and there have been a few chemistry issues.

“It’s about working out how to get the best results from each other on the court. We’re sitting mid-table … a lot of other teams who were in our situation wouldn’t be sitting that high.”

Lino said when they had been playing well, they had been able to get some good results, but other times they had played poorly.

He said having started training two months after most of the other sides, they expected it would take some time.

“To be where we are is a good sign for us to build on,” he said.

“A lot of the players individually in the open floor and beating their defenders one on one.

“We need to improve team defence, zone defence. We also need to try and find the balance of scoring for ourselves and passing the ball through hands.”

The Gators will travel to Mildura this weekend to face the Mildura Heat on Saturday night.”

Lino said the next month will give them a good idea of where they sit.

“We play Mildura twice in the next couple of weeks,” he said.

“After that we have a pretty solid run, with some really gettable games.

“We play Pakenham in about four weeks and they are on top. We’re really excited about the next four weeks.”

The Gators had a good win in the first of those matches against Mildura, winning 81-68. Tyson Burton scored 20 points.

Meanwhile the Gators women’s side had a big win in division 2.

The Gators set the tone with a 28-3 first quarter and would eventually win, 109-30.

The side remains on top of the ladder.

United makes A-League history Tara Murray In just three short years, Western United has become the kings of the A-League men’s competition.

Often criticised both on and off the park, United has continued to build and prove their critics wrong.

They did exactly that on Saturday night in the A-League grand final. Under first year coach John Aloisi, United beat Melbourne City 2-0.

Aleksandar Prijovic was the key man as he flicked on a header that ended in a Nuno Reis own goal in the first two minutes before scoring a second goal on the half hour mark.

Neither team would score in the second half, with United able to celebrate a significant achievement that not many people predicted.

There were heroes all around the ground.

Prijovic would win the Joe Marston Medal, but Neil Kilkenny in the midfield and captain on the day, Josh Risdon, came up big when needed.

Chants of John Aloisi rang out around the ground and even by players gate crashing the after game press conference as the former Socceroo star’s return to coaching was capped off with his first A-League title as a coach.

“The club is only three years old, so to be able to do that, what we did, not only tonight, from the beginning of the season is amazing,” he said.

“It’s an amazing feeling, amazing night so happy for the football club as a whole.”

All season Aloisi and the playing group spoke about belief and the feeling that they could create something special.

While they believed it, not many others did, as they went in as the underdog against both other Melbourne teams in the finals.

Aloisi said they just focused on what they could control.

“We never spoke about nobody believing us, we spoke about us believing in ourselves more and about us working towards something,” he said.

“Mindset, process, preparation. We didn’t care what others were saying, if we did I don’t think we would be in that position now.

“We just worried about ourselves, worked hard everyday and we get the reward.”

Having opened the scoring with the quickest goal in grand final history, Aloisi was weary of how the game would play out.

He need not worry, with his side doing as they had so many times this season after scoring early.

Aloisi said they looked dangerous going forward, while also limiting City’s chances.

Prijovic, who signed with the club on a multi-season deal, said there was a real belief in the squad right from the start.

“I would say individual awards are always important as they are achieved as a team,” he said.

“The team has been amazing from the coaching staff to everyone to the fans.

“Everything went our way, we believed in it from the very beginning. As soon as we reached the final it’s going to be tough but we have to take it. Not many believed in us.

“But this is life we believed and it has been a very long way a long year, the game went in our favour.

“We did a fantastic job today and I think everyone today in the stadium agrees we fully deserve this victory.”

Kilkenny got to share the victory with his family. He had only seen them three weeks in the last six months.

“It’s been a hard slog,” he said on the broadcast. “A lot of sacrifice but we are glad to be here now and to win it, “To share it with your family it’s one of those things.

“The club wants to improve, they’re a club that wants to invest … it’s one of the best clubs I’ve been at.”

For Aloisi, there was a sense of joy and relief at getting the victory. He admitted that he had his doubts it would ever happen.

“I was sitting in my hospital bed nearly three years ago saying I want to coach, I need to coach, I have a lot more in me,” he said.

“I believed that. I was waiting for the right opportunity and someone giving me that opportunity to coach.

“Once you’re in a job then it’s not about you,

it’s about the team, the club and where we are going as a club.

“It’s more satisfying when I see all the hard work that goes into a new club. It’s not easy.”

While the celebrations will last for a few weeks, Aloisi said a win like this will only help in the journey of the club.

“What I loved about the players we signed this year, it wasn’t just because they didn’t have anywhere else to go, it’s because they

wanted to create history. They wanted to come and felt that we were going to build something special and we were going challenge and create history and they are their reason we were able to do that.

“Now it might be easier, people will see that we mean business we don’t want to be here just to make up numbers.”
