The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has rejected the Barro Group’s request to extend the deadline for extinguishing hotspots at the Kealba Landfill. As reported by StarWeekly , the EPA had set a deadline of August 22. Barro requested the deadline be extended to February 17, 2023. But in a statement last week, the EPA said it was not satisfied all reasonable practices had been taken to meet the standing deadline of August 22, 2022. Despite the EPA refusing the extension, residents fear they still have a fight on their hands to ensure the hotspots are extinguished in a timely manner. Resident Marian Attard Pham said she was disappointed Barro Group applied for the extension in the first place, given the number yearhaveofchancesit’shadtoextinguishthefires,whichbeenburningforalmostthreeyears.TheEPAoriginallygaveBarrountilJulylasttoputoutthefires.

Ardeer artist Elzette Bester’s exhibition ‘Colour Outside The Lines’ stands as a reflection of her much-loved Brimbank community, showcasing flora and fauna and the vibrancy of the western suburbs. Showcasing her art from the last 10 years she describes her exhibition as “vibrant, bold and colourful,” using a variety of methods including, watercolour, gouache, pencil, or pen and ink. 9
“I’m glad that the EPA has declined the extension, but I don’t know if that’s going to be enough … It’s just been really slow to the party, it’s been really frustrating,” she said.

Ms Attard Pham wanted this kind of action from the EPA years ago. EPA officers will now conduct an inspection of the site to review compliance of the existing environmental action notice. Following the inspection non-compliance will be escalated for further investigation and could include the potential prosecution or revocation of Barro Group’s operating licence, the EPA Brimbanksaid.councillor Virginia Tachos has followed the landfill updates closely and said residents have been putting up with odours from the fires for almost three years.

Brimbank youth groups have a month to apply for new council grants , worth up to $5,000. The 2022 Brimbank Community Fund (BCF) grants program focuses on youth well-being and mental health. This included projects that do the following:
Fagan’s lawyer Alexandra McClure noted Fagan hadn’t entered a plea and was entitled to the presumption of innocence. A space was immediately available at a youth rehabilitation centre where she could receive treatment for mental health issues, alcohol abuse and impulse control issues, the court heard. Mr Hardy agreed to release Fagan on bail to the facility, warning he wouldn’t tolerate the contempt she had shown four other police and magistrates who granted her freedom. Fagan said she would comply. “I will prove it to you,” she said. Mr Hardy said Fagan should prove it to herself.
“It makes no sense that Mickleham should sit empty whilst we have a health crisis that is worsening by the day,” Mr Guy said. “We need to take advantage of this facility which in a short period of time could be used to accommodate hundreds of willing patients who no longer require acute hospital care and would be more comfortable in a setting with full support whilst they await placement into aged care or special accommodation.”

DRAFT STRATEGY
Opposition Leader Matthew Guy said the state’s health system was in crisis and that the premier had failed to fix it over the past eight years. If elected in November, the Coalition said it would reprioritise beds in the Mickleham Quarantine Facility to improve the health system at an estimated cost of $35 million during the first Additionally, year.they would shelve the Suburban Rail Loop project, which could cost $125 billion in its first stages, to instead put more money in healthcare.
By Karen Sweeney, AAP It was almost inevitable that a catastrophic event would flow from Alisha Jane Fagan’s driving, a magistrate has told her. Despite opposition from the grieving family of Melbourne grandfather Sedat Hassan, the woman accused of killing him has been freed on bail. It’s alleged Fagan, 22, was doing at least 78km/h in a 50km/h zone when she smashed into Mr Hassan’s car in Sunshine West on June 9 this year. She denies being the driver, but DNA on the driver’s airbag is a match to her with a probability of one to 100 billion, magistrate John Hardy was told. The charge of dangerous driving causing death is the 14th matter Fagan currently has before the courts. She was on four counts of bail at the time of the crash. Charges include driving while suspended, speeding up to 150km/h and being pursued by police, Detective Senior Constable Jason Barry-Bassett said. With that alleged history it was “almost inevitable” something tragic would occur, Mr Hardy said. “The real worry I had, and have, is that she has some kind of psychological addiction to driving cars, even when she knows she shouldn’t be,” he said.

On Sunday, August 21, Premier Dan Andrews announced five new GP-led Priority Primary Care Centres will be established to help ease pressure on hospitals. The centres will be located near Royal Melbourne Hospital, Northern Hospital Epping, Sunshine Hospital, Monash Medical Centre Clayton, and Grampians Health Ballarat.The$14.3 million project means each centre located near major hospitals, providing alternative care pathways for non-emergency caredepartments, patients.“Thiswillreducedemandonouremergencyensuringthosethatneedurgentcangetitfasterandavoidanunnecessary
Fagan has been held in custody at Melbourne’s women’s prison, the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre, since June. Members of Mr Hassan’s family also watched the hearing by videolink. Their primary concern is that what happened to their father and grandfather will happen to someone else, prosecutor Daniel White said. “As Your Honour has already indicated, this was inevitable,” he said. “There’s an abundance of evidence in this case that she will (drive) again and if she does it again the consequences could be catastrophic.”

From a prince looking to kill his father to claim the throne to characters searching for love through time and space, Western Edge Youth Arts’ newest work is a unique beast as it combines the work of three Edge Ensembles theatre groups. The Footscray, Wyndham and St Albans ensembles are combining their separate works which they developed for 15 weeks to create ‘Distortion’, a story combining time travel and curses to tell a story of power and greed. Western Edge co-artistic director John Marc Desengano said the Edge Ensembles groups combines young people from across the west and allowed them to write and produce their own theatre pieces.
Plan for green neighbourhoods
“This program is called Edge Ensembles for good reason, as we believe strongly in the power of community and collaboration, and our participants discover the true meaning of what it is to be part of an ensemble,” he said. “These are their stories, their creative genius and their Footscrayprogram.”EdgeEnsembles lead artist Chala Mohamed, who is also a participant in the Collective-In-Training program, said taking part in an Edge Ensembles is contributing to his“It’sdevelopment.actuallyhelped me become a stronger actor,” he Westernsaid.Edge Youth Arts will present ‘Distortion’ at the Footscray Community Arts Centre from 7pm to 8.30pm on Saturday, September 10.

By Dora Houpis Brimbank council’s recently-adopted plan for the city’s future design aims to focus less on car travel and more on creating liveable and greenerCouncillorsneighbourhoods.recentlyvoted to adopt in full the 41-page Creating Streets for People Policy, focused on how Brimbank’s streets should look, function and support the community in the future. The guide to designing streets in the future supports less car driving and parking and more walking and cycling. It also focuses on planting more trees and vegetation and reusing storm water.
Mr Whiteside said the council had not yet decided on the policy’s funding.
“The number of car spaces removed is not determined. The implementation of the policy will not necessarily require removal of car spaces,” he said. “With each project, council will complete an assessment of existing and required car spaces to ensure adequate on-street parking.”
Although the councils’ agenda stated the policy would have “significant financial impacts”, Brimbank council last week could not say how much it would cost to implement.
“The implementation of this policy will be considered by council in future budget submissions with some costs associated with existing budgets,” he said.
“The improvements to outdoor spaces will enhance liveability in Brimbank, create safer public spaces, more trees and greenery and deliver more opportunities for outdoor dining and socialising,” she said.

A growing Sunshine zoo
“Anyone from kids to old people will stop to have a look at them.”
Mr Nguyen came to Australia in 1989 from Vietnam.Hesaid he has always loved Japanese Bonsai and although he has a Japanese grandmother he said it’s more of a respectful hobby for him than a cultural connection. This is the second home he’s created the still life zoo, previously living in Barnett Street, he’s picked up and started again on Duke Street in Sunshine. He said the hedges begin in pots before being transferred to the garden underneath a wire skeleton shaped like an animal. He said it can take up to seven years for them to take their full shape. His next project is to craft the bonsai trees that are currently growing scattered throughout the garden, but framing is set up for a second giraffe to take shape over the next few years.
By Dora Houpis Brimbank residents say they would welcome plans for a new rail station near Keilor as part of the Melbourne Airport Rail Link. Brimbank Ratepayers and Residents Association president Irene Stokes said such a plan would be good for the area.
An eye-catching display of carefully shaped hedges are hidden among the streets of Sunshine.Maintained by Phung Nguyen, it’s hard to walk past without stopping for a peek. Mr Nguyen says the inspiration for his unique creations stems from his childhood. “It’s my hobby, in my childhood I would see cartoon animals and then when I grew up and read magazines I would see the Japanese bonsai and think, I want to do that,” he said.
Mr Whiteside said a station at this location would “further increase the public transport catchment of Sunshine” and increase job, health and commercial opportunities in the western-metropolitan region.

By Tara Cosoleto, AAP A Victorian coroner has found a police officer acted appropriately when he chased a man who was later struck and killed by a car in Melbourne’s west. He also eventually admitted to officers that he did not have a licence. When the senior constable returned to his police car to check Mr Deng’s name, the 29-year-old got out of his car and started walking away. Mr Deng was worried he would be arrested so he chose to flee the scene, his friends told last year’s inquest.

crossed over two lanes of traffic. He jumped over a metal barrier in the road’s median strip and was immediately hit by a BMW. Mr Deng died in hospital the next day from significant headTheinjuries. 29-year-old was previously convicted three times of unlicensed driving but there was no evidence to suggest Mr Deng wanted to put himself at risk, coroner Sarah Gebert found on Tuesday 16 August. Rather he wanted to avoid arrest. She was satisfied the senior constable could have formed the opinion that Mr Deng provided the wrong name when he chose to run. There were no adverse comments on the actions of the police or the BMW driver, Ms Gebert said. She found there was no evidence to suggest that police pulled over Mr Deng’s car because of his South Sudanese ethnicity. The senior constable also showed dignity and respect towards Mr Deng during his discussions with him, which were captured on body-worn footage.

Council continues to strive to ensure everyone in our community feels safe, connected and happy. We have successfully advocated for the duplication of the Melton rail line, secured a commitment at a State level to build Melton Hospital, and campaigned to locate the Western Intermodal Freight Terminal in our City. But we’re not done yet. We’re also seeking to establish a local TAFE trade training centre to provide education and skills development opportunities in preparation for the Melton Hospital and the Western Intermodal Freight Terminal, that together will unlock around 100,000 local jobs. We’re also running our Fix Our Roads campaign requesting major roads upgrades in our City, including Western Highway. If you haven’t already, add your voice to the campaign at fixourroads.com.au Don’t hesitate to contact me yourorsophie.ramsey@melton.vic.gov.auaton0412584067.I’dlovetohearthoughtsaboutCoburnWard.

Art, footy and mental health come together in this fantastical exhibition about uncovering our unconscious relationship with gender roles. With the help of Jungian psychology, artist Julie Zapasa plays with diverse expressions of masculine and feminine in artworks that put a creative spin on the symbols and colours of much-loved Australian Football League teams. Using footy as a metaphor for the heroic battle of the mind, Julie explores ways people can navigate patriarchal conditioning, and ultimately contribute to Team Humanity.
Anima Animus runs until 27 November at CS Gallery, Caroline Springs.

Sunbury Ladies Badminton Club hosted a hugely successful tournament in August, with over 80 players registered to take part. People came from far and wide to take to the courts at Eric Boardman Stadium on August 18, with players from clubs including Craigieburn, Northern Ladies, Werribee, Geelong, Thornburn, Bendigo, Ballarat and the Sikh Ladies Badminton getting involved. Sunbury Ladies Badminton Club secretary Cathie Briggs said with membership numbers dwindling after COVID-19 lockdowns, it was great to see such involvement.

Interior The increase in the horizontal exterior allows for a boost to the wheelbase and cabin space in general, something not lost on occupants aboard the test vehicle. In a first for Jeep, the Grand Cherokee L boasts Uberesque seating for a driver and six passengers in space and comfort. All three rows are easily accessed, even the power-operated third row, with the second row tumbling well out of the way, leaving the back to weigh in with adult leg room. Carry-on bits and pieces find a home in a range of storage spaces, including a deep box in the centre console and bottle holders in the centre and doors all round. Rear passengers have the advantage of retractable blinds, just in time for summer heatwave predictions. Luggage is not left behind in the storage stakes, with 487 litres available with all three rows in use, leading up to a cavernous 2395 litres with the two sets of rear seatbacks folded flat. There’s a cabin-wide cubby under the floor where the jack is stored. Grand Cherokee has become grander, with increased dimensions, seven seats and boosted technology. (Pictures: Supplied)
By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring Some would say, not before time, Jeep has brought back an extra row of seats to its Grand Cherokee large sports utility vehicle range, turning it into a full seven-seat SUV. While at it, the maker has boosted its iconic off-roader with more technology. The replacement for the big five-seater, the long wheelbase L comes in three versions, beginning with the Grand Cherokee L Night Eagle, selling for $82,250, plus on-roads, then the mid-range L Limited ($87,950) and the L Summit Reserve ($115,450).
Styling For a vehicle so big, at more than five metres long, the Grand Cherokee L Summit is well proportioned - width more than two metres, yet height well under two metres - gives the SUV a bold yet sleek aerodynamic coupe character.Oneonlooker compared the test car looks to a Range Rover, which in this case, was a bit of a stretch, literally. Indeed, at more than 5.2 metres long, the ‘L’ is easy to find in a crowded car park, as it inevitably sticks out from the standard car space. The front consists of an upper metallic grille with Jeep’s trademark seven slots flanked by LED headlamps. Below is a full grille-width air vent incorporating LED daytime running lights. From the rear, the SUV belies its bulk with simple horizontal lines incorporating wraparound tail lights and twin alloy tipped supportalloyexhaustpipes.Sideon,21-inchpolishedpaintedwheels,astandardfitmentonSummit,asportystreetpresence.
All models are powered by the tried-and-tested 3.6 litre Pentastar naturally aspirated V6 engine, delivering 210 kW of peak power and 344 Nm of maximum torque to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The flagship Summit adds a more advanced four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case.
The flagship Summit Reserve (on test) included Palermo quilted leather, 21-inch wheels, a McIntosh premium sound system, front-seat ventilation and massaging, four-zone climate control and air suspension, while a $5500 Advanced Technology Group, with head-up display, wireless phone charging, night vision camera and front interactive passenger display, was added, taking the price to more than $120 grand, before on-road costs.
Summit a new high point for Jeep

Keilor’s season has come to an end after losing to Pascoe Vale in its Essendon District Football League premier division semi-final onKeilorSunday.coach Mick McGuane said a lot of what cost them the victory was fixable. “We dominated in the first quarter, but didn’t get as much ascendancy as we would have liked on the scoreboard,” he said “If only we just had another week next week to address those issues, but we don’t.” After a confident start the Blues fell behind in the second quarter as they struggled to convert from inside the 50 metre mark. This gave the Panthers the upper hand they needed to gain an advantage in the second quarter, making Keilor’s strong comeback in the final quarter inadequate to get the conversions they needed to turn the game around.ThePanthers won the game 10.13 (73)- 7.14 (56).

“There’s a lot of mechanics of the game that we just couldn’t master this time, which had a lot to do with our inside 50 efficiency,” McGuane said It’s been a hard year for the Blues with the team losing some key players due to injury across the season. McGuane said they
from missing senior players with younger players , giving them the opportunity to take up this level of the game.
Achieving their coaching goal of eight to 10 wins this year, Glascott said it was still a good achievement for their first season.Expectations have been set for the next season with the team focussing on developing a roster that will take it to the next “We’velevel.obviously got some verbal commitments out of guys, we just have to physically put contracts in front of them and make that all happen,” GlascottValuedsaid.player Zac Triplett joined five games at the end of season up until injury.“[Filling that gap] took a bit longer than we wanted it to, but like I said, I think at the back end of the season we were a lot better,” Glascot said.
There’s been a lot of close calls for the Thunder this season but they’ve been just behind the mark in a number of cases.A mid-season game with Sandringham saw them in front for the most part and then losing the ball in the last two and a half minutes of game time.“There’s been a handful of those games, but I think our back end is getting a lot better. We were on a nine or 10-game losing streak close to the middle of the season but got back on track,” Glascott said.
