Painting the world orange Albion North Primary School was a sea of orange on Tuesday.

Teachers and pupils participated in the celebration of Harmony Day organised by the school’s mental health and wellbeing leader Julia Renda, canteen manager Mickey Furniss and junior school council (JSC).

Ms Renda said they ran a number of activities for the pupils to be part of.

“The celebration of Harmony Day promoted the message that ‘everyone belongs’ and reinforced to our students and wider school community the importance of inclusiveness to all Australians,” she said.

“The JSC alongside with students and staff organised and ran a successful day full of cultural activities for our students to experience such as delicious multi-cultural snacks for sale at recess, wearing orange and multi-age rational classroom activities.

“The day was a great success and the teachers and students enjoyed celebrating and honouring the cultural diversity of our school and of Australia.”

The JSC was successful in raising $200 to support The Royal Children’s Hospital.

Garden group up in arms

By Tara Murray The Friends of H V Mckay Memorial Garden has refuted claims it supports changes to the heritage-listed gardens as part of the Melbourne Airport Rail Link plans.

As reported by Star Weekly, the project, which will connect a rail line from Sunshine through to the airport, will mean changes to the garden.

Some residents have raised concerns about the impact of the rail project on the gardens.

Rail Projects Victoria has applied to Heritage Victoria for a permit to begin work to reconfigure the rail tracks on an area of

VicTrack land next to the gardens.

The application was open for comment until March 21.

Earlier this month, a Rail Projects Victoria spokesperson told Star Weekly they recognise a few people in the area are opposed to the project but those views does not represent either the Sunshine and Albion community, nor the Friends of HVMcKay Gardens organisation.

The friends group were among those to put a submission into Heritage Victoria.

“Contrary to statements to the press from representatives of Melbourne Airport Rail (MAR) the friends group does not support the proposal as outlined in the heritage impact

statement presented to Heritage Victoria by MAR,” the group said in a statement.

“We have attended consultations with MAR in good faith, and based on the information provided, and assurances given in earlier meetings, we are gravely concerned about the impact of the proposal on the cultural heritage significance of the state heritage registered H V McKay Memorial Gardens and Church, and on the peaceful enjoyment of this important resource for the Brimbank community.

“While we do not oppose an airport rail we oppose it in its current proposed form.”

The group said it was deeply concerned about the lack of detail in the heritage impact

statement and it doesn’t agree with ‘batter’ construction which will remove from the gardens an area previously used for decades.

The group also doesn’t agree with the removal or relocation of heritage infrastructure from the earliest period of the gardens, the removal of original plantings nor the re-configuration of the entry to the northern section of the gardens.

Brimbank council also made a submission, which was tabled at last week’s council meeting, stating the lack of certainty around the final outcome of tree removal was a great concern.

Aviation noise under microscope Brimbank council is urging the federal government to progress a range of changes to address what it says are inequities and imbalances that exist within the current legislative and aircraft noise system.

The council made a submission to the government’s Aviation White Paper that is expected to set the long-term policies to guide the next generation of growth and innovation in the aviation sector.

The paper examines issues across the aviation sector, in four specific areas. Brimbank council’s submission focuses on better mechanisms for consultation on and management of issues like

aircraft noise, airport development planning and changing security requirements.

The council’s submission included 17 recommendations and centred around the council’s submission to the Melbourne Airport’s draft master plan and preliminary draft major development plan for the third runway.

“Council seeks the federal government to restore a level of balance and equity for those communities that surround airports to minimise the harm to human health from aircraft noise and improve airport planning by requiring a more public and transparent

process, particularly in relation to community consultation,” a report to the March 21 council meeting said.

The council wants an undertaking of a review of the aircraft noise system to minimise harm to human health. It said it should be a requirement of airports to prepare a health impact assessment (HIA) for the development and expansion of runways and there needs to be an independent and expert advisory committee established.

The council also wants a policy framework established that outlines a compensation scheme for airport-impacted communities.

Councillor Virginia Tachos said while the paper holds some very positive goals, it lacks in a number of areas.

“I hope the federal government looks at our submission and the fine print contained in this piece of work,” she said. “It [the council submission] focuses on the key issues.

“Whilst we support and want a robust aviation industry, we still need to protect the health and lives of our children and our vulnerable citizens under flight places, schools, hospitals, places of worship, child care centres and aged care centres.”

Served from the soul Charity organisation 300 Blankets has called for more volunteers to spend their time supporting individuals in need across Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay. President Peter Royce said the charity had recently restarted its Soul Kitchen service, which is offering three-course meals every Sunday night at the Braybrook Community Hub from 6.45pm to about 8pm.

“We are in the low sixties every week,” he said.

Mr Royce said the service had returned to pre-pandemic levels.

“There’s a number of reasons why people use our service,” he said. “People range from young kids to elderly locals.

“This is often the only meal they share with someone else.”

Mr Royce said the service provided a social element to people’s lives, as well as helped families and individuals who were struggling

with the rising cost of living to make ends meet at the end of each week.

“What we pride ourselves on is creating a family atmosphere,“ he said.

The Soul Kitchen service also includes a weekly visit from Orange Sky Laundry, which provides visitors with a free laundry service and a clothing supply service, as well a monthly hairdressing service.

Mr Royce said the organisation was keen to reinvigorate their volunteer base following the COVID-19 pandemic, with those aged 16 to 18 able to volunteer if accompanied by a parent or guardian.

“We’d love to have local people involved,” he said. “We need to expand our pool with some new blood.”

Ad hoc volunteering opportunities, as well as ongoing roles, are available for western Melbourne volunteers.

Calls grow to fix Brimbank Park

By Tara Murray It’s a case of ‘groundhog day’ in relation to access concerns at Brimbank Park according to local councillors.

Councillor Virginia Tachos raised a notice of motion about her and community concerns about maintenance and long standing access issues at the park.

She also called for state government intervention in removing debris as a result of last year’s Maribyrnong River flooding.

Cr Tachos has raised her concerns about the park previously.

“Council and community members have been raising concerns with the lack

of response from the impact of last year’s flood event, resulting in extensive amounts of debris restricting access across sections of the Maribyrnong River Trail throughout Brimbank Park,” she said.

“Council and community members have been raising the serious issue of lack of access to Brimbank Park after rain events, which flood the access fords in the Maribyrnong River and make access unsafe, for many, many years.

“Council and community members have been raising ongoing concerns when the fords are flooded the only way to access Brimbank Park is by car given there is currently no public transport access to Brimbank Park.

Not everyone has access to a car.

“Council and community members have been raising concerns with the lack of maintenance of facilities at Brimbank Park, including toilets, rotunda and playgrounds, creating an unsafe amenity resulting in reduced usage.”

Cr Tachos motion also called for state government ministers to allocate funding to construct an appropriate pedestrian bridge which would provide year round access, along with providing a master plan to turn it into a key destination.

Councillor Maria Kerr said it was like groundhog day.

“I feel like every three or four months

bringing this matter to a head,” she said. “I’m calling on the state government to stop the neglect of Brimbank Park.

“It has sat stagnant for the last 25 years, nothing has changed, nothing has been upgraded.”

Parks Victoria district manager Craig Bray said visitors will soon enjoy upgrades to various areas across Brimbank Park including upgraded signage and toilets, installation of new shelters, barbecues and picnic tables.

Works are set to begin in April.

“Parks Victoria is aware of local community feedback regarding pedestrian access to Brimbank Park and across the Maribyrnong River,’ Mr Bray said.

Keilor’s history on show Some of Keilor regions most famous sites will be on show to the community.

The Heritage Sites in Keilor event is a joint event by the Overnewton Castle and the Keilor Historical Society in which residents can explore some of the most significant heritage sites in Keilor.

In the morning, people can tour Overnewton Castle with the gardens open, along with the chapel and the six room colonial homestead.

Then in the afternoon, Harrick’s Cottage and Police Hut will be open. There will be an exhibition detailing the history of the sites, while there will be Melbourne Airport land historical displays.

It’s the first time the two organisations have had a joint open day.

Keilor Historical Society president Susan Jennison said it was good to have the

opportunity to show the history of the area.

“It is great to show some of the highlights of the Keilor region and what is going on,” she said.

“We used to have yearly openings but COVID interrupted all that stuff. The last one we had was last year when the pre-fab police hut was opened.”

Overnewton Castle will be open between 10am-12pm on April 16 and Harrick’s Cottage and Police Hut will be open between noon-5pm.

Zoo welcomes rhino calf, first in a decade

Werribee Open Range Zoo is celebrating the arrival of a Southern white rhino calf – the first calf of this threatened species to born at the zoo in almost a decade.

First-time mother Kipenzi gave birth just before 4am on Tuesday, March 21, to the female calf who weighs just over 60 kilograms.

The birth follows a 16-month pregnancy during which Kipenzi and her calf ’s health has been carefully monitored by zoo veterinarians and zookeepers.

Following the birth, keepers observed an absence of healthy bonding, with the calf not thriving as expected during the important first hours of infancy. After consultation with the zoo’s veterinary team, the calf was brought to the zoo’s vet clinic for medical checks and supplementary feeding.

Werribee Open Range Zoo director Dr Mark Pilgrim said the calf is being provided with around-the-clock feeds of colostrum obtained from its mother.

“The calf ’s health has begun to improve, and it is now in the process of being reintroduced to mum,” Dr Pilgrim said.

“However, it will continue to remain under veterinary care during these critical early days.

Keepers and vets are additionally monitoring the post-birth health of Kipenzi to ensure she is being provided with the highest quality care. This includes daily check-ups and observations via remote installed cameras.

The birth of the calf is a major milestone for the zoo and the conservation of Southern white rhinos in the Australasian region.

Currently they are listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List with their population

New bike path A new section of bike path has opened along the M80 Ring Road through Airport West and Tullamarine.

Constructed by the Melbourne Airport Rail (MAR) project, the new path will be one of many bike route upgrades that will be provided in the coming years as part of MAR. Bicycle Victoria said on its website that the new section, closer to the rail corridor, replaces the former path that was adjacent to the freeway.

Some students find settling into school is not easy With term one of the school year coming to an end, many children have been settling into the school year, while others may have struggled with their transition to a new year level this year.

For many students the school day can feel scary and exciting, leaving parents anxious on how to best support their child and encourage them to attend every day, especially if your child is having difficulties.

UNSW professor Andrew Martin is an expert in educational psychology and said it’s common for academic adjustment problems to occur in children, but it’s important to understand why.

“Is it will, skill, or both?” he questions.

“If the problem is will, it refers to the motivation and engagement aspects of school life.

“There are positive parts to motivation and engagement, such as self-belief and effort—as well as negative aspects, such as anxiety and procrastination.”

Whereas, he said skill refers to a child’s ability to learn and perform at school.

“It might be that they have difficulty in understanding information and the key concepts required to engage with a subject,” professor Martin said.

“Or, they may have functional problems with things like literacy, numeracy, and even executive functions such as paying attention and focusing.

“It is important to identify which aspects the child is struggling with as early as possible because one can impact the other. For example, a student can lose motivation in the face of ongoing reading difficulties.”

To further help your child settle in this year, Deakin University early childhood education lecturer, Dr Charlotte Wilders explains the importance of engaging a child’s voice.

“Research focusing on educational transitions has identified that strong relationships between families and teachers are crucial to achieving a successful transition experience,” Dr Wilders said.

She urges parents to assist children who are struggling by supporting them through

dialogue with their teachers.

“When you share information about your family culture and your child’s interests you effectively enable the teacher to create a learning space which acts as a bridge between home and school,” she said.

“When parents and teachers access

children’s voices to determine their interests, individual experiences can be created that improve motivation and lead to a stronger sense of well-being, giving children a strong sense of belonging to their new environment.”

Back to school Twins Colby and Sebastian, and Rania and Dania, were among the excited pupils starting school at Furlong Park School for Deaf Children last week.

The school reopened for 2021 on Thursday and there was plenty of fun for the two sets of twins and their school friends.

Colby and Sebastian, 8, and Rania and Dania, 6, are two of three sets of twins at the school this year. The school has about 65 students.

A third set of twins will start on February 11 and will be part of the school’s early years program.

Principal Lee Bullock said it was possibly the first time the school had welcomed three sets of twins.

Former LeadWest chief executive Craig Rowley and former state MLC member Colleen Hartland say enough is enough.

Why strong teacher-student relationships are vital A study by Associate Professors Penny Van Bergen and Naomi Sweller of Macquarie University and Professor Linda Graham of QUT shows that students’ memories of good teachers are remarkably consistent, and that strong teacher-student relationships can support positive interactions with future teachers.

The research team conducted a series of interviews with 96 students from grades 3-10. They included students with and without a history of disruptive behaviour in mainstream schools, along with students in special “behaviour schools”.

What united the groups was a belief that their most positive relationships with teachers came when teachers were “kind, caring, helpful, or humorous”. For students with a history of disruptive behaviour, a kind or caring teacher could make the difference between engaging with their schoolwork and walking out of class.

All groups also shared the view that teachers who were hostile or unjust were harder to get along with. Alarmingly, students with a history of disruptive behaviour overwhelmingly remember negative relationships with teachers. For example, one third of students in the behaviour school group couldn’t remember a single positive relationship with a teacher.

Conflictual teacher-student relationships were not limited to disruptive students, however. Forty per cent of students with no history of disruptive behaviour also remembered at least one negative relationship. Many of these students were “model” students: prefects, student reps, and school duxes. Students in all groups highlighted pre-emptive reprimands, when they were told off before doing something, as being particularly unfair.

Positive interactions with teachers help students feel confident at school.

The researchers do note that this is only one side of the story, and that teachers may have a different view. These results are still important though, since they show how consistent students’ perceptions of positive and negative relationships are. They also indicate the ways that poor teacher-student relationships can exacerbate classroom challenges.

“Using their memories of conflictual interactions, students may develop protective strategies: either shying away from that teacher

or reacting with pre-emptive aggression,” the article says.

The study authors recommend that teachers complement other positive teaching behaviours, such as responsive instruction and individual guidance, with explicit warmth.

In the classroom, teachers could reflect on positive interactions with their students by sharing positive memories or identifying each other’s positive characteristics.

Similar activities are used in positive

psychological interventions to improve student wellbeing.

They also recommend professional learning to help teachers better manage the emotional pressures of classroom teaching.

School counsellors have a role, too, and can help students to reappraise their past relationships with teachers. This should help ensure that ambiguous teacher actions aren’t misinterpreted, and positive actions aren’t overlooked.

Prior to teaching, I worked as a medical microbiologist but decided that teaching was my passion and this is still the case today. I taught Maths and Science, specialising in Chemistry, and I also taught in Dubai for two years. I was appointed as Principal at VUSC 4 years ago, after serving as an Assistant Principal for 6 years.

Our Principal, Raelene Delvin commenced as the Head of Primary in 2010 relocated to Mernda as the Head of Campus in 2021 and has now returned as the Principal of the Taylors Hill campus. Raelene has been instrumental in implementing and ensuring that our curriculum meets the needs of our community. She has been an integral part of the school’s growth and is an experienced leader with a strong track record of delivering quality Christian education.

As both a teacher and a mother of two boys, I believe that all students can achieve success in their chosen pathway, with conscientious effort, persistence, resilience and the right support.

Last week we celebrated Harmony Day and the unique values, skills and customs people from all backgrounds bring to our city, while on Sunday, Neighbour Day was a chance to address loneliness and encourage everyone to build social connections and check in on neighbours.

I hope everyone takes an opportunity this week to reflect on what we can do to make our homes, communities, schools and workplaces friendlier, more welcoming and inclusive places.

The end of March also means it’s already time for Lakeside Alive! – Caroline Spring’s big community festival. Back and bigger than ever, it’s a free, family-friendly, fun-filled day. We’ll have a range of food trucks serving yummy treats and some great live music performing all day. So come down to Lake Caroline this Saturday 1 April from 12pm to 8pm for a great day out.

I would also like to wish Allan Godfrey a very happy 100th birthday. Allan is a western suburbs veteran and member of the Caroline Springs RSL. On reaching such a significant milestone I would like to thank Allan for his contribution to our community, and his dedicated and gallant service in our armed forces.

Local partnership strengthened

By Tara Murray A partnership between Brimbank council, local police and key stakeholders will be strengthened.

The former Safety Roundtable group was established by council in 2013 as a critical partnership group supporting community safety.

A new partnership, the Brimbank Safety and Wellbeing Partnership will come into effect, replacing the roundtable. The partnership is a formal agreement, shared values and commitment of resources between diverse members, including Victoria Police, the state government, health and community

service providers, community leaders and council.

Councillors supported the formation of the network at last week’s council meeting.

“In 2022, council worked with a number of internal and external stakeholders to co-design a scalable approach for improving safety and ensuring community wellbeing at the Errington Reserve precinct in St Albans,” a report to the council meeting stated.

“As part of this, a service co-ordination model was developed that included recommendations to convene a Brimbank Hotspots Group and transition the Safety Roundtable into the Brimbank Safety and Wellbeing Partnership (SWP).

“The Hotspots Group brings police, traders and service providers to identify and undertake place-based interventions in ‘hotspot’ locations across Brimbank, including Errington Reserve. This includes the coordination of welfare responses, policing, local laws compliance, public realm safety and amenity improvements and place activation.

“It is intended that the SWP will provide strategic oversight for these location-based interventions, bringing key local stakeholders together to focus on ways to improve safety outcomes through social inclusion rather than just a law-and-order approach.”

The key objective of the SWP includes

overseeing the outcomes of the safe and inclusive Brimbank strategy and implementation plan, to share information as a basis for collaborative action and community education, identify emerging needs and gaps relating to community safety issues, provide input on strategic policies, plans and projects that seek to improve community safety outcomes and oversee actions arising from the Brimbank Hotspots meeting.

Councillor Victoria Borg said it was pleasing that the partnership was now also focusing on wellbeing, with research showing that those who are a threat to community safety usually have mental health related problems and other health problems.

Ready for Easter scrap The old rivalry between Albion and Sunshine will be renewed on Good Friday.

With the two clubs both in the Western Region Football League division 2 competition this season, they will face off to start the season on April 7.

The teams will play for the Hart Recycling Cup in what they’re calling the Good Friday Scrap.

The last time the teams played was in 2019 when both were in division 1.

There will be face painting and Easter eggs for the kids, while there will be plenty of fundraising for the Good Friday appeal.

Cats player Josh Michetti is set to have his head shaved by the winning coach after the game as part of the fundraising efforts.

Albion president Danny Taylor said they were hoping to get a lot of people down to

watch some good football on the day, as well as raise money for charity.

It’s the first time the club has hosted a Good Friday match.

The action at JR Parsons Reserve will start at 12pm with the reserves, followed by the seniors at 2.15pm.

Barro fights licence cancellation

By Tara Murray The Barro Group is calling for a stay on the decision to cancel its licence to operate to the Sunshine landfill.

The group and the Environmental Protection Authority faced the tribunal on March 14 after the Barro Group decided to take action after the EPA cancelled its licence.

The licence was cancelled with underground fires at the Kealba site burning for more than three years.

The two parties will be back before the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal on March 30 in regards to the matter.

The EPA also issued an environmental action notice to manage ongoing risks at the site.

This notice included capping and rehabilitation plans, which the EPA continues to enforce along with previous notices.

The EPA provided an update to community members on the current situation.

“Barro Group have asked to review our decision to revoke their licence,” EPA regional manager western metropolitan region Steve Lansdell said.

“A VCAT administrative hearing is on 30 March 2023 to determine next steps.

“Barro Group have applied for a stay. A stay

is a permanent or temporary discontinuation of a legal action, by an order of the court.

“This means there may be a temporary hold on our ability to revoke their licence until VCAT holds a full hearing.

“We attended VCAT on 14 March 2023 to consider this stay application. We expect a decision from VCAT in [the] coming weeks.”

A court date has also been set for March 31 after the EPA charged the Barro Group and three of its directors in relation to breaches of general environmental duty.

The EPA has also reviewed the final report

that the Barro Group has provided.

“The report provided information on recent hotspot temperature and drilling,” Mr Lansdell said.

“We issued a draft notice to investigate.

This means further monitoring at the landfill boundary and batter walls.

Barro Group have until 17 March 2023 to provide any comments.

“In the coming weeks we expect to determine further actions. This action focuses on the hotspot remediation strategy going forward.”

The EPA was set to hold a community meeting last week.

In harmony together Harmony day went beyond the teachers and students at St Albans Heights Primary School on Wednesday.

This year for Harmony Day the school invited the students families to íts annual Harmony Day welcome barbecue.

School community liaison officer Leanne Etemovic and community hub leader Dannielle Tomlinson said it was an opportunity for our families to meet the staff at the school and get to know other families that make up our diverse school community.

“Harmony Day is a celebration of our cultural diversity – a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home,” they said.

“Our family’s got to experience each other’s cultures, enjoyed Henna, experienced AFL [football] and made badges and art displays to show their solidarity that followed this year’s

theme of “everyone belongs.”

“We also invited families to come dressed in their cultural dress or orange, to showcase our dynamic multicultural community that we, here at S.A.H.P.S, are very proud of.

“The feedback was very positive, families had a lovely afternoon, connecting with each other, different cultures and the school … which was the point of the afternoon.”

Celebrating good food and wine Melton’s best restaurants, bars and venues will be in the spotlight later this month as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.

Venues in Aintree and Caroline Springs will be taking part in Westside Wanders, a progressive tour during which participants stop for a bite and drink and each venue.

This is the second year Melton has taken part in the festival program.

This series complements Eat Drink Westside,

a unique collaboration between Melbourne’s western region councils, Melbourne Food and Wine Festival and Western Melbourne Tourism.

Eat Drink Westside started in 2016 and it shines a light on the area’s culinary gems and enviable food community.

Mayor Lara Carli said Melton council was proud to partner with the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.

“You don’t have to travel across the city to have great dining experiences. You can get it right here,” she said.

Western Melbourne Tourism chairperson Scott Chapman said the organisation valued the strong partnership with Food and Wine Victoria in the delivery of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival and in presenting the very best of the west in food from around the world.

As part of Harmony Week (Monday, March 20 to Sunday, March 26), Victoria University’s vocational education provider Polytechnic has celebrated the achievements of its Western Melbourne English Program (WMEP) in welcoming hundreds of students from across the globe to its classrooms for about 30 years.

With classrooms in Sunshine and St Albans, the WMEP helps students from 16 to more than 65 years of age from a number of countries, including Vietnam, Sudan, Ethiopia, and Eritrea, Syria and Afghanistan, strengthen their reading, writing, speaking, listening and numeracy skills.

WMEP manager Gabriella Zibell said the WMEP was the only program which delivers a full suite of courses and specialised streams across a number of disciplines.

“We offer more than 20 courses for students wanting to improve their English, whether it be for work, or just to help them with day-to-day activities,” she said.

3. Telstra regards the proposed installation as a Low-Impact Facility under the Telecommunications (Low-impact Facilities) Determination 2018 based on the above description.

Nissan wagon finds its own path

By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring How things change. Take the Nissan Pathfinder, for example, that over almost 40 years found its way from being a basic two-door compact wagon, through a big boofy 4x4, to the smart, sophisticated seven (or eight) seater sports utility vehicle of today.

Originally designed for the North American market, the initial Pathfinder was the first of the segment to be offered in two-wheel drive guise.

The fith generation has landed Down Under with new-found modern design and a stack of high-tech features and safety systems, albeit on a platform and with a V6 engine, developments of the superseded model. The continuous variable transmission has been let behind in favour of a new nine-speed auto.

Three variants - ST, Ti and Ti-L - only are on offer in a mix of front and all-wheel drive. Diesel or hybrid options, unlike from rival carmakers such as Hyundai, Kia and Toyota, are not on the cards. Prices have gone up considerably, starting at $54,190, plus on-road costs, for the entry-level ST 2WD model, while the range topper signs off at $77,890 without ORCs. However, where the Pathfinder finds its appeal is the offer of two seating configurations, for seven or eight. The standard three-row set-up is for eight, but stretch to the Ti-L and get into a pair of luxurious leather captain’s chairs mid cabin separated by removable centre console storage.

The test vehicle, a Ti 4WD costing $70,030, plus on-roads, came as an eight-seater with a 60:40 split second-row reclining bench.

Access to the back twin seats is a doddle, even for grown-ups, with a one-touch button automatically flipping and folding the second row out of the way.

All Pathfinders are covered by a five-year unlimited kilometre warranty with round-the-clock roadside assistance for the same period.

smoothed out, replaced by a thoroughly modern SUV-cum-coupe shape able to take up to eight people in comfort.

With black side moulding and body coloured door handles and black painted roof, highlights include chrome window surrounds and silver roof rails.

The front carries on the Nissan V-Motion theme with a large grille flanked by LED automatic headlamps, daytime running lights and foglamps. Out back are the slimmest LED tail lamps, plus a high-mounted stop light.

Each external rear vision mirror incorporates a turn signal.

Privacy glass is fitted to second row and rear windows, while 205 litres of luggage space is let with all seats in place and 54 litres under floor, leaving room only for a temporary spare wheel.

The Ti features front parking sensors, a surround-view monitor and Nissan’s ProPilot semi-autonomous driver assist system that connects the adaptive cruise control with stop / start and lane keeping aid.

Other features include autonomous emergency braking with junction, pedestrian and cyclist detection, rear AEB, rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot warning and intelligent blind spot intervention, rear seat alert, a driver alert, traffic sign recognition and trailer sway control.

Front seat airbags, side airbags (driver and passenger, second row outboard), front row far side airbag (centre), side curtain airbags (all rows) all helped the SUV earn a five-star safety rating recently.

Driving Interior Quality fit and finish are trademarks of the cabin. Black leather-accented seat and door trim is joined by a similar set-up steering wheel, the latter with tilt and telescopic adjustment.

Up front is a 10-way power driver seat and six-way manual passenger seat. The front and second row outboard positions are heated.

Child restraint anchorages with second row outboard seats with ISOFIX and tether, centre seat with tether and third row let side with ISOFIX and tether.

The tri-zone climate control air-con comes with second and third row air vents.

Infotainment A 7-inch TFT Advanced Drive-Assist Display instrument cluster is joined by a 10.8-inch head-up and 9-inch touchscreen display with satellite navigation. Wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto are backed up by a wireless smartphone charger, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming and voice recognition.

A Bose 13-speaker premium audio system includes dual subwoofer for AM / FM radio, DAB+ digital radio. USB-A and USB-C points feature throughout the cabin.

Remote engine start has the Pathfinder firing up for a quick-ish getaway, with cabin insulation keeping the engine, wind and road noise at bay. Shit-by-wire technology is aimed at faster, smoother gearshits.

Nissan claims a 10.5 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban / highway fuel cycle.

The test vehicle recorded 13-plus litres per 100 kilometres in the city and suburbs and 6.4 litres per 100 kilometres on the open road.

Nissan engineers have fine-tuned the steering for a sharper response and reworked the suspension for improved levels of damping, increased roll stiffness and wider contact with the road. Overall, the Pathfinder turned in a good performance for such a big unit.

Backing up are a range of dial-up drive modes, including Sport, Eco, Snow, Sand, Mud / Rut and Tow.

Engines / transmissions

Summary

Nothing to see here! Under the Pathfinder’s bonnet is the same 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine, delivering 202 kW and 340 Nm as before. However, the continuously variable transmission has been given the push in place of a new nine-speed auto. The Pathfinder maintains its 2.7 tonne towing capacity.

No longer basic, neither is it boofy as in previous iterations, the fith-generation Pathfinder is the essence of the large SUV, with quality, comfort and safety to the fore, on and off road.

Versatility is the byword, with nothing to match this, except perhaps the Hyundai Palisade.

Summer season grand final joy There’s been grand final fever across Melbourne’s north-west in recent weeks, as the summer sports finish up their seasons.

There’s plenty of good stories from across all competitions and here is four of them.

All-round performance seals win Sunshine Heights’ under-13 B side tasted premiership success in the Western Region Junior Cricket Association Friday north competition.

Whilst Deer Park won the toss and batted first it was bowled out for 130 in 25 overs. Deer Park’s leading run scorer, Arjun Upadhyay top scored 37 runs off 33 balls, which included one four and three sixes. Noah Ramsey dismissed Arjun.

Noah’s the youngest Ramsey to play with our club, along with his father, Shane and his two older brothers, Zac and Jhett. Noah’s bowling figures were 2-20 off three overs.

An emotional win for Epping The premiership success for Epping’s second XI in the Diamond Valley Cricket Association B-grade competition was extra special.

Playing in their fifth grand final in seven seasons, the Pingers won their fourth title.

This one was extra special as at the beginning of the season the club lost a young man who was one of their best mates.

At only 18, Kade Lawry, who was part of the B-grade side, took his own life just before the cricket season, with the players dedicating the season to him.

After losing to Diamond Creek during the regular season, the Pingers turned the tables in the grand final.

Epping batted first and made 9-147 led by captain Jaedyn Kearney 46 not out and wicketkeeper Shanyn Kearney with 30.

The Pingers then restricted Diamond Creek to 112 wickets, with Jordan Wilkins taking 4-27 and Jaedyn Kearney 3-20 to make it a special day for the club.

Sunshine Heights’ second best bowler was Sarim Tamoor who bowled three overs, taking 1-7.

Manroop Singh took three outfield catches to help get Deer Park all out.

Sunshine Heights got the runs as the sun set, finishing 5-132 off 28 overs.

Sarim made 34 not out and Noah 31 not out, both retired and came back in with a 60-odd run partnership.

Arlo Mykyta made a handy 14 not out to help guide Heights home. It was an all round team effort to defeat the top side away from home.

Altona notches up a perfect season It was the perfect season for Altona in the Western Region Junior Cricket Association under-11 Friday south-east competition.

After starting the season with one under-11 team, the A’s split into two teams due to the number of players.

One team played in the south-east competition and the other in the club’s Friday east.

In the south-east grand final, Altona faced Grand United.

Altona batted first making 9-172 with Charlie Loft top scoring with 26. Grand United finished 13-140 in reply off its 20 overs.

Alistair Culka took 3-14 off his three overs.

In the club’s east competition, there were no finals. The team won eight games for the season.

Altona Sports’ successful season was capped off with a third senior premiership. After its division 5 side won a premiership, the club’s top side managed to go back-to-back, albeit in different competitions.

The second XI made it a hat-trick of wins, winning the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association Barrie Clissold Shield against East Coburg.

East Coburg batted first and were set to make a big total before Dean Bryden and

Jono Lang combined to take 8-63 to dismiss East Coburg for 146.

Dean Mckensie and Daniel Mulcahy got Altona Sports away to a strong start before East Coburg started to take wickets before Lucas “The Kid” Meirers came in and showed wisdom beyond his years and steered the side to victory to score 8-147 to see Altona Sports home.

It was back-to-back wins for the second XI.

Positive start for Westvale Olympic Early signs are good for Westvale Olympic in the FV state league 2 north-west competition.

The state league 3 north-west premiers last season, Westvale is hoping to consolidate its spot in the higher division.

Coach Bill Georgopoulos said things were looking good not just for the senior side, but also the club as a whole.

He said there had been a big push on social media and holding different events to help grow the club.

“We’re looking much better than last year,” he said. “The juniors are taking off a bit which is important for us.

“We’re a grassroots club, a community club. We had a successful year consolidating our position in state league 2 and see where it takes us.”

Georgopoulos said they had a young senior squad this season, as they were keen to build a squad full of young and ambitious players.

“I’ve kept a lot of the young boys from last year, seven or eight of them,” he said.

“With all the new players, we’ve pretty much kept the same mould of player. The average age is 22-23, we’re a very young side.”

Early match results have shown that Westvale is on the right track. It is through to the fourth round of the Australia Cup, where it will play Old Scotch on April 6.

The side started its regular FV state league 2 north-west season with a draw against Mill Park.

Georgopoulos said they could have come away with the three points.

“We could have won three-four nil went goal up and lapse of concentration and conceded the equaliser,” he said.

“We still had a chance to get the win. It was the first game and against one of the favourites.

“I spoke to their coach after the game and

he said they didn’t deserve anything from the game. They had one half chance in the whole 90 minutes and they scored.

“It’s all about consistency with a young team. The team is playing well so far.”

Westvale was set to face Altona North on Saturday in the second round of the season, after deadline.

Altona North is one side that Westvale knows well.

“Altona North was the team promoted with us,” Georgopoulos said before the game.

“Both are aiming for their first win for the season. It’ll be a hard fought game against an experienced team.”

In other state league 2 north-west matches that were set for the weekend, Albion Rovers were set to face Mill Park and Western Suburbs were set to play Altona East Phoenix.

Innella’s a global talent

By Peter Howe “See ball, get ball,” is a simple mantra of March Don Deeble Sports Star Jack Innella.

It was what worked for him when he first started playing basketball and nothing has changed as he prepares to travel to France with the Australian Boomerangs, the men’s national team for athletes with an intellectual disability, to the Virtus Global Games.

Innella started playing basketball as a 10-year-old.

“I didn’t know the rules, but I loved the speed of the game,” he said “You are always involved.

“My parents made it simple for me, see ball get ball. So, I did.”

Innella tried football but found he was out of the play for a lot of the time, so he lost interest quickly.

It is very obvious he is a fierce competitor.

For a start he is only 1.8 metres tall and the smallest member of his teams, secondly and most importantly for Innella, he wants to break the glass ceiling by becoming the first intellectually disabled basketballer to make it in mainstream basketball.

“I would like to set the pathway for my mates in the Boomerangs to be seen as competent basketballers and able to match it with the best.”

Innella has taken the first step towards that goal by being the first Boomerangs player to be invited to the AIS in Canberra for a camp of

under-20 basketballers.

Just 25 basketballers in Australia were selected to attend that camp.

“It was very physical and tough, but I loved it,” Innella said.

Innella doesn’t want people to judge him, just accept him for who he is and celebrate what he brings to the team.

He has made the huge decision to take himself off his ADHD medication to comply with WADA regulations as he chases his sporting dreams.

“The older I get the more I understand myself. I am a perfectionist and get angry with myself if I make mistakes.

“I have learned to take myself out of the game if this happens. I don’t feel I need my medication at this stage and am managing it quite well.”

Innella trained at Team 639 in Hoppers Crossing to work on my strength and conditioning most days before spending another two hours with his mentor Darren Hindle to work on his shooting technique and mindset.

Innella is a visual learner and picks up the nuances very quickly. Learning by repetitive doing means he spends hours and hours watching and playing the sport.

“I play as the point guard in my teams, it is like being the quarterback in the NFL. You set up the plays and set the tempo of the game.”

Innella made his first state squad at age 14 as

an emergency. It was an amazing achievement given it was an open age men’s team.

His parents took him to Canberra to watch the tournament as emergencies didn’t travel for that tournament. One of the Victorian assistant coaches saw him in the crowd, came and got him and immersed him into the team for the rest of that tournament.

That moment had an overwhelming impact on him. The bond between player and coach was forged in that simple act of inclusion.

Innella now travels from Truganina to Pakenham five days a week to train and play under that coach.

As a 15-year-old, Innella was also playing in mainstream representative teams.

The best moment in Innella’s basketball life occurred in the Virtus Asian Games held in Brisbane last year.

Innella was playing point guard for Australia and was given some tough defensive roles.

At the recent Ivor Burge National Basketball Australia tournament held in Geelong, Innella was selected as the best defensive player in the competition.

It will be a new looking Taylors Lakes in the Essendon District Football League division 2 this season.

The Lions have been busy adding players to the squad as they aim to play finals this season.

Coach Steve Burns said there would be a few changes this season.

“We have 11 or so recruits and five or six returning players,” he said.

“We’ve only lost two players from the senior side from last season which is pretty good. It’s been a really strong solid pre-season from the boys and we believe we will be right in the mix.”

Burns said with so many new players, the challenge was firstly figuring who players where, but then the players learning to play together.

Samuel Kosmak, Jake Toa, Jack Burns, Raaf Rachrache, Mitch Jones and Aaron Vendramini are among some of the new signings.

“The practice matches start this weekend,” he said last week.

“It’s all good and well going well on the track, but in game situations they have never played together before.

“We won’t get to know this until we get through the practice games and the early part of the season.”

Burns said while many of their recruits are in the 22-23 age bracket they bring more experience to the group.

He said they hope that will help in close games.

Last season they lost four games under two goals and drew another game, finishing in sixth.

Burns said they would be a better side this season.

“We feel like we have done everything right,” he said.

“We are one of two players short of where we want to be.

“But we’ve had one preseason and it’s been a really good start of what we want to set up and returning to be a division 1 club.

“The group has taken on board everything w have thrown at them.

The expectation is there will be a level of improvement.

“Where that takes us I don’t know, We definitely want to play finals, but it’s an even division.”

Young Keilor Thunder stars ready for challenge Keilor Thunder is set to be tested early in the National Basketball League 1 South competition.

Entering its second season in the competition, the Thunder has a young talented list, with many having come through the club’s junior program.

With a couple of players still to arrive and an injury, the Thunder’s young stars will be thrown in the deep end.

Thunder coach Trevor Burnette said they would be playing a lot of kids early on.

“They’ve done really well in the three or four pre-season matches,” he said. “They’re getting opportunities and it’s been a big learning curve.

“The biggest learning curve is how physical you can play, with much more bumping.

“They’re getting better and better every game. We’re always in games in the first half. It might be a two point game and then we lose by 10 to 20 points.

“Just size wears us down.”

while Jaz Salon did a good job with her scoring and penetrating in the first three games.

Maddi Puli, who has returned from college is slowly finding her feet, having scored 25 points

in their most recent practice match.

The young stars will be joined by some new signings and imports.

Grace Graham, who is currently injured, returns to the Thunder from college, having previously represented Victoria at the under-20 national championships.

Burnette said that Graham would be a key piece of their side and getting a player of her calibre is an absolute steal.

Another signing is Lana Hollingsworth is a two-way player who can impact the game on both ends She is currently a development player for the Southside Flyers in the WNBL Import Shaunay Edmonds has already arrived in the country and will be ready for round one.

She is coming off a great season in the.

Pro-League in Mexico and is a highly decorated point guard coming from Akron University where she was a four year starter.

United in its inaugural season has stunned many observers with its first season and the success it has had so far. A top two spot guarantees a double chance in the opening week of finals. United was set to face Canberra at the weekend.

After winning the division 1 title last season, the Lions had a season of ups and downs, but ultimately made the senior division grand final.

A below par batting performance on Saturday would prove to be the difference, with the Clubbers claiming premiership glory.

Lions coach Mick Andriadis joked when they won last season’s premiership they would go for a second straight premiership, and he was almost proven correct.

“You would like to achieve something like that,” he said. “To our club’s credit and to the players, everyone involved it has been a roller coaster year. “[The] first game with a [a loss by] mankad then we had the dramas with Haig [Fawkner] and then we’re not playing, then we are playing.

“Full credit to the VTCA for getting the season finished as they did. It was not the result we were looking for, [but] credit to my boys they fought it out well.”

Andriadis admits making just 138 on day one was never going to be enough.

Andriadis said they might have played their grand final in the semi final to get past Haig, with one of their best performances of the season.

“We just needed to make a bit more runs,’ he said. “If we had this weather yesterday [Saturday] might have been a different story,” he said.

“At one stage there I think we were 5-90, when [Mohammed] Alfar and Leach were batting and I thought we were a chance to take the momentum but not to be, couple of bad outs and an Ibw, turned the game and all of a sudden you’re five or six for 100.”

Andriadis said had you told him that Trent Lawford, Chinthaka Jayasinghe and Sangaran Nandhalal would make 22 between them, he would have thought it would have gone a long way to getting victory.

“We think we’ll be pretty competitive. Knox has a couple of WNBL girls and we will find out how good we are really quick.”

VNL The City West Falcons opened its account with a big win against the Peninsula Waves in the Victorian Netball League championship division.

After a loss in round one in the grand final rematch, the Falcons were too strong for the Waves, winning 86-44.

Jane Cook scored 48 goals, while Maddy Gray scored 21 and Uneeq Palavi scored 16 goals. The Falcons face the Hawks this week.

Coates Talent League Western Jets Rook Barry was one of the stars at the recent Coates Talent League Boys testing day ahead of the commencement of the 2023 season.

Players from the 12 Victorian programs featured in a range of testing, which included the standing vertical jump, running vertical jump, 20m sprint, agility test and yo-yo test. Barry, whose local club is the Yarraville Seddon Eagles, was quickest on the 20m sprint, with a time of 2.845 seconds.

“All in all, I’m rapt for the season, rapt for the club,” he said.

“I know that it hurts a little big now, but it’s been a great effort “Top division is not easy, we see the differences in some of the sides. I’m proud of the boys and the way that they fought.”

Bob Tregear has been appointed the Western Region Football League’s interim chief executive until a new appointment is made. Tregear has stepped into the role after the league and recently appointed chief executive Ritchie Hinton decided to part ways.

Since retiring as WRFL chief executive in 2017, Tregear has maintained his strong connection through supporting the board on governance matters and through involvement in special projects.
