‘Cool’

driving

Werribee South’s Anton De Pasquale and teammate Tony D’alberto combined to finish third in Sunday’s Bathurst 1000.

De Pasquale’s podium finish wrapped up a week of strong performances, securing third place in Friday’s qualifying session and fifth place in Saturday’s shootout.

De Pasquale said he was relieved to secure his first Bathurst 1000 podium amid a backdrop of drama and a run of Mount Panorama outs.

“Wrapping up from Bathurst, just finished on the podium, it was awesome, it was a really cool day. Tony drove mega all day, it was really cool to get a trophy at Bathurst, our biggest and best race of the year,” he said.

“We fought hard, put our best foot forward and got rewarded which was really cool.

“Thanks to all of our team for all of their hardwork. Looking forward to Gold Coast.”

De Pasquale, in his sixth ‘great race’ start, with D’Alberto delivered the Shell V-Power Racing team’s first Bathurst podium since it won in 2019.

De Pasquale, who now sits seventh in the rankings, will resume his 2023 season at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 in three weeks’ time.

Doors close on gambling

Reducing the harm caused by gambling was the focus of policies released by both the state government and Wyndham council last week.

On October 3, the state government announced reforms that would require gaming venues other than the casino to close their doors from 4am to 10am.t

The mandatory closure periods are included in the Gambling Legislation Amendment Bill 2023 which was introduced into parliament by Casino, Gaming and Liquor Regulation Minister Melissa Horne.

The reforms are in response to the Royal Commission into the Casino Operator and

Licence which found evidence of gaming venuesusingstaggeredopeninghourstoallow patrons to move to nearby venues to continue gambling once one closes.

MinisterHornesaidthemandatoryclosures would help prevent this.

“We’veseenpredatorybehaviourfromsome venues, allowing people to keep gambling for hours, at any hour,” she said, “Closing gaming areas between 4am and 10am will give people an important break to reassess and walk away.”

If passed, the closure period will come into effect from mid-2024.

Wyndham has 13 gaming venues which take in $239,782 per day, the 7th highest

gambling expenditure among council areas across the state.

While the regulation of the gaming industry is a state responsibility, Wyndham council has released its own plan to reduce the harm it causes in the community.

The Draft Gambling Harm Prevention Policy Statement was released for feedback on October 2 and replaces Wyndham council’s previous gambling harm minimisation policy.

Wyndham Mayor, Cr Susan McIntyre said the Draft Policy Statement aims to address the complex issues related to gambling while at the same time promoting healthy communities.

“This is done by working with partner organisations and advocating on behalf of the needs of our community, continuing our leadership role in working towards education and change, while also protecting those at risk,” Cr McIntyre said.

“The effects of gambling include poverty and financial pressure, personal distress, family violence, and homelessness.

Family violence also continues to be a major health and safety issue for Wyndham, representing a significant concern and priority for the community.”

Builders beware says liquidator

The liquidator of failed Point Cook building company, Chatham Homes, has warned prospective homeowners that other construction companies could follow suit.

Andrew Schwarz of AS Advisory was appointed liquidator of River Dale Building Group Pty Ltd, trading as Chatham Homes, last week after the company collapsed leaving 50 projects without a builder and 16 staff without jobs.

The boutique home builder became the latest construction company to enter administration this year, in being unable to

survive the rising costs, delays and supply constraints plaguing the industry.

Andrew Schwarz said Chatham Homes may not be the last to go under.

“Given the issues the industry is facing, it wouldn’t surprise me if there were more,” he said, urging those planning to build a home to be extra careful,” he said.

“It’s very important to do your due diligence if you’re building and to investigate the financial strength or otherwise of the proposed builder.”

Mr Schwarz was unable to say how many

There’s a buzz in the air

With Wyndham being one of Victoria’s main honey producing regions, a local bee-keeping club is warning residents to be on the look out for swarms this spring.

The Werribeek Bee Club was established in 2017 and provides advice and support to bee-keepers across Wyndham as well as members of the public. Werribeeks president, Carmel Gerdsen said the latter was particularly important at this time of the year.

“As it’s spring time we want to bring awareness to the importance of swarm prevention and for the public, if they have a swarm, we’re there to help,“ Ms Gerdsen said. While the amount of bee swarms in Wyndham is partly due to the traditional style of bee-keeping imported to the area by European migrants, Ms Gerdsen said spring time made them particularly common.

“Between the months of September and December, the bees focus is on reporduction which means making more bees, making new

queen bees and creating swarms,” she said.

“The hive makes a new queen and the old queen leaves with half of the colony and that’s a swarm.

Generally a swarm will not attack you, they’re just looking for a new home.”

Ms Gerdsen said while bee swarms are not as dangerous as many think, people should still take precautions if they encounter one.

“Stay calm, watch where they go and them if they can get a photo, report it on a website called swarmpatrol.com and any bee-keepers that have registered with swarmpatrol, we will get an alert to go and collect the swarm.”

Ms Gerdsen urged any bee-keepers in Wyndham who are not registered with swarmpatrol, to do so and anyone interested in bee-keeping to visit Werribeeks apiary behind the Wyndham Park Community Shed.

customers in Wyndham were affected, but had two pieces of advice for those with homes left unfinished.

“One is lodge your claim with the VMIA (Victorian Managed Insurance Authority) under homeowners warranty insurance and two, we are in discussion with a number of builders in relation to those builders being able to complete contracts on behalf of Chatham Homes.”

Along with existing construction projects, Mr Schwarz said Chatham Homes had signed contracts for another 30 and owed about $2

million to approximately 200 creditors.

Chatham Homes owner, Bradley Hall, last week blamed referral commissions paid by builders to real-estate agents, financial planners and other advisers for his company’s failure, telling the told the Australian Financial Review that the ‘absurdly high’ commissions represented a risk to the entire industry.

Andrew Schwarz said it was too early to tell if this was the case.

“I think preliminarily they’re reasonable (reasons) though we haven’t started our investigation phase yet,” he said.

and managed to drive away.

At about 3.25am on October 3, the Toyota Kluger allegedly arrived at a car park on Tom Roberts Parade in Point Cook.

The male allegedly got out of the Kluger, assaulted a man in a parked silver Audi, dragged him out of the vehicle and stole the Audi.

Slice of salami success

When people think of fine food destinations in Victoria, Laverton North isn’t usually among them, but if one local salami producer has its way, that could be about to change.

Puopolo Artisan Salumi recently scooped the pool at the Sydney Royal Fine Food Show.

Puopolo’s Finocchiona Mild Fennel Salami was named Champion Salami Type Product in the Smallgoods and Charcuterie competition, while its Cacciatore Mild Salami, Felino Wine Infused Mild Salami and Guanciale Mild Cured Meat all bagged gold medals.

While the success of any manufacturer is ultimatelymeasuredintheamountofproducts they sell, Puopolo’s national sales manager, Damian Aliano, said the awards would help them do just that.

“Because we’re a new manufacturer in this space, these awards mean a great deal to us, because it gives credibility to the product range that we manufacture” said Mr Aliano of Puopolo’s which has only been producing

high-end small goods for 10 years.

“We haven’t built a massive reputation because we haven’t been around long enough, but we’re hoping these wards give confidence to consumers that we manufacture a quality product.”

Mr Aliano credits a bespoke style of manufacturing with their success.

“It starts with the pork. We only utlilise pork from one supplier and with that supplier he breads the animals to our spec,” he said.

“We go to the extent of importing our mould from Italy as well as premium spices,” said Mr Aliano who listed appearance, smell, texture, and flavour as the characteristics judges assess when grading salami.

The next step for Puopolo’s is to get more of their newly awarded products out of Laverton North and into supermarkets and delis across Australia and beyond.

Police later spotted the Audi on Tarneit Road in Tarneit about 9am and it was followed through Hoppers Crossing. The vehicle came to a stop on Woolpack Street and the female driver was arrested at the scene.

Officers then spotted the Toyota Kluger on Point Cook Road in Seabrook.

With assistance from the Air Wing, the vehicle was followed to a carpark on Heaths Road in Hoppers Crossing. The male driver allegedly dumped the Toyota Kluger and fled

the scene on foot. He was later arrested on Lennon Boulevard in Point Cook.

The 21-year-old Point Cook man has been charged with carjacking, attempted carjacking, drive while disqualified, theft, theft of motor vehicle and attempted obtain property by deception.

Blake lands a giant snapper

When Werribee’s Blake Misfud and a friend were dropped off at Wyndham Harbour on September 28, it was for another afternoon fishing, the type the 14 year old has been partaking in since he could walk.

But soon after casting out into Port Phillip Bay, Blake realised this wasn’t another routine afternoon wetting a line.

“When it started taking all my line and the drag starting going,” said Blake of when he knew one of his first bites that Thursday was from something very big.

Sevenminutesofreelingandwrestlinglater, Blake’s hunch proved correct as he hauled in a monstrous, 4.1kg, 78 centimetre snapper.

“Biggest fish I’ve ever caught,” said Blake of the fish which is considered one of the largest ever caught in the area, especially from land.

The elation didn’t last long though. Having

wrestled the huge fish out of the water, Blake and his mate were left with another conundrum: what to do with it?

He got on the phone to his brother-in-law who’d only just dropped them off.

“About 20 minutes later I called him telling him he needs to come back with a bigger esky and net as I couldn’t fit the fish in the esky I had!

“He didn’t believe until he seen me sitting on the footpath with the fish.”

Asforthegiantsnapper’swhereaboutsnow?

“I have wrapped it up in a towel and put it in the freezer as I want to get it taxidermied but can’t find anyone available,” said Blake.

A dilemma many fisherman would be happy to have.

Firearms blitz across the west

Detectives from across Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong last week joined forces to execute 25 firearm prohibition order (FPO) compliance checks across the north-west.

The two-day blitz saw officers search the propertiesofthosewithactiveFPOstodisrupt and deter illicit firearms use.

During a search in Tarneit, officers located animitationhandgunandafirearmmagazine. A20-year-oldmanwasarrestedandcharged with prohibited person possess imitation firearm and commit indictable offence while on bail. He was remanded in custody to face court at a later date.

A subsequent search in Werribee located an imitation handgun and a quantity of methylamphetamine.

The 22-year-old man was arrested and charged with prohibited person possess firearm, possess drugs of dependence and handle stolen goods. Further searches located another imitation firearm, cannabis, steroids and a stolen vehicle.

An FPO prevents a person from acquiring, possessing or using a firearm or firearm related items, as well as entering certain premises such as firearms dealerships and shooting ranges. Once an FPO is served on a

Call to join the force

Victoria Police is on a recruitment drive and as sergeant Joel Carswell proves, you don’t have to be from Victoria or even Australia, to join up.

The 46 year old was born and bred in New Zealand and migrated to Australia in 1999.

Five years later he made another big change by giving up on studying to be a sports psychologist to become a policeman instead.

“I was at university at the time and I had a friend who was a police officer and he was telling a few stories about his adventures and we got talking a bit more about it and decided I would have a go at it a well,” said sergeant Carswell, who almost two decades on, is now based at Werribee Police Station and is encouraging Wyndham locals to make the change he once did .

“They might want to consider if they’re up for an adventure, up for a challenge and up for a constant changing environment,” he said of what prospective recruits could expect from a

career in the force.

“Andupforattheendofthedayhavingafew stories to tell your colleagues and friends.”

Sergeant Carswell’s career path means he can now tell stories about stints with Australian Federal Police, Border Force and the Australian Crime Intelligence Commission before arriving in Wyndham in late 2021.

“I’m enjoying the challenge of being a sergeant, managing resources and responding to 000 calls in the Wyndham area.”

It’s questions from potential recruits that police will be responding to questions at a careersexpoinHoppersCrossingnextMonday night.

One of those inquiries is sure to be what the best thing about being a police officer is?

person, they are searched and a further search is conducted of their premises and vehicle.

Detective acting inspector Caroline Johnson said, “Our ability to search those subject to an FPO at any time means they are a crucial tool in the prevention and disruption of firearms-related offending”.

“The fact that only two in 25 people searched were found with firearm-related material means these orders are really having an impact.

“We know they serve as a strong deterrent as every person subject to an FPO knows how severe the penalties are if caught.”

Campaign targets knife crimes

Crime Stoppers Victoria and Victoria Police are urging young Victorians, including those in Wyndham, to cut the violence in a bid to reduce knife-related crime.

The ‘Cut the Violence’ campaign was developed in consultation with school students aged between 15 and 18 year olds to reinforce the risks and consequences for those carrying a knife.

Crime Stoppers Victoria chief executive Stella Smith said education played a vital role in stopping knife crime in the community.

“No parent or family member should ever have to receive a phone call to hear that their child or loved one has been stabbed,” she said.

“There is simply no excuse for carrying a knife illegally, and through this campaign we want to show the potential devastating consequences of knife crime.

“Carrying a knife as a weapon is illegal- it doesn’t make you tough or protect you, it only increases the chances of you spending time behind bars, being injured or dying.”

Victoria Police North West Metro Commander Michael Cruse said police will continue to target the carriage and use of knives and weapons in a number of different ways.

“Police, like the community, remain concerned about any form of violence on our

KISS kids from the west

Keen-eyed AFL grand final viewers in the west may have been surprised to see some of Ravenhall’s best young dancers performing alongside international rock band KISS during the mammoth pre-game entertainment.

It was only a month out from the big game that Kstar Studios got the call offering for 50 of their students to take to the field of the MCG and join 450 other dancers performing the classic Rock and Roll All Nite.

Seven-year-old Fraser Rise performer, Cuban, even got the opportunity to take centre stage, back to back with Tommy ‘The Spaceman’ Thayer for his guitar solo.

Cuban said he loved every minute.

“My back-to-back with Spaceman was my dream come true,” he said.

Kstar Studios founder-director Karen Jehodo said she and her team were screaming andcryingwatchingtheshowcometofruition,

with her students in the spotlight.

“They were so excited, this is the biggest thing… they were blown away to perform in a stadium with the world’s biggest rock band,” she said.

Ms Jehodo said it was a whirlwind month for the students, supported by a “crack team” for choreography, make-up and 500 costumes.

streets,” he said.

“Any death or injury caused by a knife attack is sadly one too many and we have zero tolerance for those who think that carrying a knife in the community is acceptable.

“Police will continue to target the carriage anduseofknivesandweaponsfromallangles, including dedicated OMNI operations which enable us to detect weapons [and] protect community safety.”

Crime Stoppers Victoria invited students from Scoresby Secondary College and St Albans Secondary College to take part in consultations across an eight-week period.

They explored topics including laws related

to knife carrying, the perception of knife crime in the community, and the messaging that would resonate with them when it comes to reducing knife crime in their cohort. During consultation, students recognised that fear, force, and control may be the main motives for those carrying an illegal knife.

WorkingalongsidetheCrimeStoppersteam, students co-created campaign messaging and concepts to encourage potential offenders to consider the dire consequences of picking up a knife.

Keeping pets safe from snakes

Vets at Greencross Vet Hospital in Werribee are urging pet owners to stay vigilant and to keep their gardens free from overgrowth as it treats three to five dogs or cats daily for snake bites.

The change of season and warmer weather brings the snakes out from hiding as they love to sunbake but not get too hot.

Clinical director at Greencross Vet Hospital

Dr Liam Donaldson says owners of domestic pets need to be extra cautious during spring.

“Primarily it’s dogs who are presenting

with snake envenomation, but it’s also not uncommontoalsoseecats.Wehaveevenhada rabbit who suffered tiger snake envenomation –luckily the owners were aware and brought the little one in quickly for treatment,” he said.

His team at Greencross Vet Hospital is seeing several tiger and brown snake bite cases in and around the western Melbourne area.

Bites from either snake type can result in respiratory paralysis and a coagulopathy; an inability to clot blood that can be rapidly fatal if not immediately treated.

Lily’s lucky escape

On Monday 25 September, Lily Pamintuan, a 10 year chihuahua pomeranian cross presented at Greencross Vet Hospital at the University of Melbourne after having been bitten by a tiger snake.

It was a warm sunny day. Lily had gone out in the garden to go to the toilet, when Gemma Pamintuan’s (Lily’s owner) father heard Lily barking at something which turned out to be a metre long tiger snake.

Lily didn’t make any noise, but Gemma’s dad bought her inside and she immediately ran to Gemma. Lily lay on the bed for a while, but when she stood up, she collapsed, went to stand up again and collapsed again.

Gemma rushed Lily to her closest emergency vet which was Greencross Vet Hospital at the University of Melbourne, calling ahead so that the team was prepared with the antivenom when they arrived, and Lily could be taken straight in for treatment.

“The team at Greencross Vet Hospital were really caring. One of the nurses sat with

me providing support while I filled out the paperwork. Not long after we had arrived Dr Liam came out to give me an update and reassured me that I did get to her in time,” said Gemma.

Lily received snake antivenom, and after 48-hours of hospitalisation, was discharged on Wednesday 28 September.

“Lily’s recovery will take about four weeks; her bloods are all clear and she still has two droopy eyes that haven’t gone away yet, but her recovery is going well,“ said Gemma.

Gemma’s advice to other pet owners in relation to snakes is to be on the lookout.

“Definitely be alert especially around bushland areas as most of the time snakes are looking for shelter. Be very aware and if you have any decking or gaps in fences, it’s a great spot for snakes to hide, dogs are curious as they will approach not realising that they could be in danger.”

Dr Donaldson is warning owners to look out for signs of envenomation as early as possible, and to always bring them in for professional assessment.

“In dogs we commonly see vomiting and collapse before a very quick recovery. This recovery is only short lived, before the toxin has its most fatal effect of causing breathing paralysis,” he said.

“Sometimes pet owners feel that their pet has recovered following the initial period of collapse, only to find an hour or two later that

their pet is struggling to breathe. Dogs also often present with dilated pupils and a wobbly gait or an inability to walk.”

He urged pet owners to keep their gardens clean and free from overgrowth as snakes like to hide in cool places and an overgrown garden creates the perfect hiding spot.

“Pet owners should not under any circumstances handle a snake if their pet has been bitten, leave it be and immediately take your pet to your closest animal hospital,” says Dr Donaldson.

Six tips to help you care for someone with a disability

If you care for someone with a disability, it’s important to prioritise looking after yourself as well. Here are 6 tips to help ease some of the pressure:

1/ Are you eligible for payments?

As a carer, you may be eligible for carer payments. Explore servicesaustralia.gov. au/carer-payment for more information. Additionally, the person you care for may also be able to get a Disability Support Pension. Find out at servicesaustralia.gov.au/disabilitysupport-pension

2/ Make an emergency care plan

An emergency care plan has all the information about the person you care for in one place. It makes it easy for someone to take over from you in a hurry, or if you need to talk with a health care professional. Find out how to create one at carergateway.gov.au/ planning

3/ Learn how to deal with challenging behaviours

Some people with a disability can have challenging behaviours, such as aggression or violence. Find out how to prevent or manage these behaviours at carergateway.gov.au/ managing-health-behaviour

4/ Managing incontinence

5/ Get help around the home

If your care role leaves you less time to do jobs

around the house, you might need extra help at home. There are many services that can help you, from providing meals to cleaning and making home repairs. Find out more at carergateway.gov.au/home

6/ Need some respite care?

The support someone needs to live their best life

Leisure Network’s office in Watton Street was a buzz of activity in the school holidays with so many children, teens and adults setting off and returning from their adventures.

“Our programs are all about fun,” said Amanda Phelps, executive director of community impact and wellbeing at Leisure Networks, “but they are also key to building a range of social and life skills. There are so many day-to-day skills that we take for granted, like catching the train, being in a crowd, buying lunch and talking to new people. We forget these are skills we’ve learnt over a lifetime.”

“Our customers tell us that they want to learn the skills they need to access the community, they want support to build confidence and opportunities to make social connections where they can find new friends. We know that with the right supports, our customers who live with a range of disability, can gain these skills at their own pace and in their own way.”

Leisure Networks in a non-for-profit community organisation that has pursued a vision of capable, healthy people and inclusive communities for over three decades.

“I see our role at Leisure Networks as helping create opportunities for people to do all the things in life that are important to them,” Ms Phelps explained.

“We do this through listening to our customers and connecting them with the rightsupportsthroughoursocialandcapacity building programs as well as one-to-one supports.

“There’sarangeofotherwayswehelppeople to feel connected and valued,” she continued.

“We work with local sporting and community groups, offer Plan Management and Support Coordination.

“We recently had some fantastic feedback

from the family of one the people we support through support coordination. It was one of those moments when you know that you are on the right track to creating impact,” said Ms Phelps.

“They told us that as a family of someone

with complex needs, it was always good to know that they had someone willing to challenge and push for an individualised approach for what they need. That is what we strive to do, be the support that someone needs to live their best life, every day.”

Spring has sprung

Melbourne’s outer north-west has been awash with a sea of yellow canola fields to welcome the change in season.

Wyndham residents can witness the flowering fields, which are normally at their best from the middle of September through to the middle of October.

The crop is grown across the state- with

the main production in the south west- for its seeds, which are crushed to use in margarine and cooking oil.

According to Agriculture Victoria, Australia produces 1.9 to 2.7 million tonnes of the grain every year, and Victoria was the second-highest canola producing state between 2017-18 and 2019-20.

As a country, Australia is widely known for its high quality exports, and canola is no exception, with some significant international markets for its canola.

Most of Australia’s canola in 2019-20 was exported to the European Union for biodiesel, and in 2020 the five year average price was approximately $560 per tonne, Agriculture

Victoria said.

People wishing to see the vibrant fields can try the road to Sunbury Road past the airport or the Princes Freeway towards Little River.

‘Canola tourists’ are encouraged to enjoy from a distance, as most flowers are grown on private farms and used for agriculture.

Werribee Church of Christ to welcome singing seniors

Singing is something that is synonymous withchurches,butonTuesdayOctober17,the congregation at Werribee Church of Christ will be belting out numbers not normally heard on a Sunday.

“We’re gonna do a few Beatles songs” said pastor Garry Cowley of the type of music attendees at the ‘Come…Sing …Celebrate’ event will be singing along to.

“There maybe a few Australian songs in there as well.”

Coinciding with Seniors Week, Werribee Church of Christ first hosted Come…Sing…

Celebrate in 2017 and Mr Cowley said it’s a great way of connecting elderly members of the community who can become isolated in their later years.

“People get to know each other. We’ve had people who’ve made good friendships with each other and that’s the whole purpose. They may come in not knowing many people but they walk out knowing that they’ve made some friends.”

Come…Sing…Celebrate involves attendees singing along with accompaniment from a guitarist and food, fun and games thrown in too.

And despite being hosted by a church, in a church, event coordinator Brownwen Hickman said it was open to people of all faiths.

“We have a short 5 minute devotional at the end, but otherwise it’s not a churchy thing at all,” Ms Hickman said.

‘There’s nothing really religious about it.”

Eighty-four years old herself, Ms Hickman knows how important it is for seniors to maintain social contact and runs a weekly catch up event for that reason.

And living in Hoppers Crossing, she’s noticed loneliness be a particular problem for elderly migrants.

“Many of them are older people, they’ve often come out here to be with their children and look after their grandchildren.

There’s a certain isolation even for them because their families are working during the day, their children are at school, they’re not

always happily occupied”

Ms Hickman said singing events like Come…Sing…Celebrate can also help improve language skills.

Come…Sing…Celebrate takes place at Werribee Church of Christ from 10.30am to

1.30pm on Tuesday, October 17.

Mum’s mission in honour of son

The Rehmat Sandhu Foundation is a Melton-based charity that supports people across the west who are living with disability, struggling financially, experiencing domestic violence and much more. The founder, Ravinder Kaur, is driven by her strong will to rise

Shortly after Ravinder Kaur’s son passed away in 2014, she received a call from a young girl who had met her son at a low point in her life.

The girl said she was sitting in a park alone in the city when a 21-year-old Rehmat Sandhu approached her.

“He said hello to me, and then he asked, are you okay? Are you crying?” she told Ms Kaur. Thegirlsaidshewasinitiallyconfusedbythe stranger, but she explained to him that she was alone on her birthday and feeling sad.

in need. She spoke to Liam McNally about the foundation’s journey.

“Straight away he called all his friends and they organised a birthday for her, a party and a cake and everything and celebrated her birthday,” Ms Kaur said.

“That was Rehmat, and he would do that for anyone.”

Ms Kaur said that it was to honour her son’s caring spirit that inspired her to launch her charity organisation, and name it the Rehmat Sandhu Foundation.

“The very word, Rehmat, means blessing,” she said.

“He was very compassionate, very kind and he always desired to make a positive impact on people, on the lives of others. So I’m just trying to do that.”

Since 2015 Ms Kaur’s tribute to her son’s legacy has been successful in uplifting the

community in Melton and across the west.

Ms Kaur has a long history in the healthcare field, and The Rehmat Sandhu foundation began with blood drives and organ donation programs.

It quickly expanded into a leading charity organisation in the disability support field, as well as assisting people who are struggling in any way it can.

“Our aim is to enhance the lives of people with disabilities by offering essential support services and promoting inclusivity within our community,” she said.

“We aim to reach out across all cultures and abilities, rendering assistance to anyone in need across Melton and the western suburbs.

“We meet the needs of homeless people, disadvantaged youth, seniors, those affected by domestic violence and vulnerable and financially struggling families.

“We also provide support and counselling services to new migrants and victims of domestic violence.”

Thefoundation’ssuccesshasbeenrecognised through record-breaking blood donations, a Victorian Premier’s Volunteer Champions award, and celebrated community events, but for Ms Kaur it’s one-on-one assistance that brings the most satisfaction.

“We are particularly proud of our work in providing vital assistance to individuals with disabilities, helping them lead more fulfilling lives,” she said.

“Additionally, our foundation has made significant strides in promoting community awareness. Any positive change we bring to someone’s life is a source of pride for us.”

The current economic climate has seen demand for the foundation’s services increase, with Ms Kaur noting an increase in vulnerable families in need of food assistance, with fuel and day to day supplies.

The organisation responds to rising demand by making an effort to be available when many organisations aren’t - including on weekends and holidays - and by doing little things that help struggling people regain their confidence, such as providing personalised birthdays for kids.

Ms Kaur said the organisation is soon set to expand following the purchase of a house in Melton West that is almost finished being renovated.

“We can accommodate more people with disabilities, or who are homeless, or domestic violence affected families,” she said.

“We’re going to have a community garden so that we can have a veggie patch and people can come and have coffee, socialise.

“Im very, very, excited about this one.”

Looking further ahead, Ms Kaur said her vision is for the foundation to continue to expand its reach and impact.

“We aim to continue providing comprehensive support to individuals with disabilities, fostering a more inclusive community. Additionally we aspire to create partnership and collaborations that enable us to make an even greater difference in the lives of those we serve,” she said.

Ms Kaur said it’s the community that keeps her going.

“I’m just trying to make a positive impact,” she said. “The love and support I get from everyone, it makes me keep going.

“Rehmat Sandhu foundation is we, not I, it’s all of us.”

Ms Kaur said anyone in the community who isstrugglingshouldreachouttothefoundation to see how they can help.

“Anyone who is in need, we dont judge, we don’t ask questions,” she said.

You’ve probably heard about Australian government changes to medicine prescribing rules, and how it’s now possible to get your regular pills for two months at a time instead of one.

If,likemanyofus, youusuallypopintoyour local pharmacy 12 times a year for medicinesand maybe double that if you also collect stuff for a family member – then this is good news.

However, it’s important to remember that this change doesn’t happen automatically, and you can’t just ask for twice the amount from the nice people behind the counter at your pharmacy – even if you’ve been going there for years and they know you well!

The main thing you need to know is that the repeats on your current prescription will still be valid only for a month at a time, and, no, you can’t use two of them at once.

Strictly speaking, the new scheme covers 60-dayprescriptions-whichisasnearenough to two months to make no difference. The plan is that for certain long-term medications - those for cholesterol or diabetes or endometriosis, as examples – 60-day supplies will be available, but only as long as your doctor thinks it’s a good idea.

On September 1 this year, almost 100 common medicines listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme became eligible for 60-day prescriptions. By this time next year the list is expected to have grown to over 300.

To take advantage of this you need to talk with your GP, who has to make some important decisions with you. They have to be confident your condition, whatever it is, is well managed by the medications and that

you won’t need a change of dosage for the next couple of months. If they consider that you are doing well on the meds, then they may issue 60-day scripts, with repeats.

The 60-day prescriptions look different to the normal monthly ones, so your pharmacist can identify it at a glance. And, of course, your pharmacist might ask you a couple of gentle

questions, to make sure you’re comfortable with the new arrangement. These new rules, the government says, will save many Medicare card holders up to $180 a year, and concession card holders up to $43.80 a year. They don’t affect the PBS Safety Net in any way.

So, patience is probably the key here. Remember that your current repeat scripts –

The ultimate 4x4 dual cab ute

Well, hello. We’d almost forgotten about the other Korean – you know, SsangYong.

After some financial woes, restructure and change of ownership, SsangYong is back in business selling cars, with two SUVs and a 4x4 dual cab ute to offer.

Originally launched here in 2004, Musso was available as both a ute and SUV, the former calledtheMussoSports, whichattractedbuyers with a bargain price and Mercedes-sourced turbo-diesel.

These days ute and SUV have parted company, but it’s the Musso 4x4 dual cab ute thatwearecheckingouthereanditsbidtograb a slice of the lucrative sports utility market.

Launched in 2018, Musso is offered in two lengths with different-sized tubs, but is not available in cab-chassis form with a metal tray replacement.

Styling

Musso comes in a choice of short or long wheelbase, both with the same 2.2-litre turbo-diesel.

The short wheelbase version is 5095mm long, with a 3100mm wheelbase and 1300mm long tub – and can carry a 790kg payload.

At 5409mm, the XLV is 314mm longer, with a stretched 3210mm wheelbase and extended 1600mm tub that is able to accommodate a full tonne (1020kg). The shorter version is fitted with benign five-link coil suspension and is more of a sports focused model.

Tick the box for the long wheelbase option and it also comes with supportive leaf springs at the rear and is targeted at the working end of the market.

Both versions have independent, double-wishbone front suspension.

There are two grades from which to choose, ELX and Ultimate, with a couple of add-on packs from which to pick.

Prices start from $36,790 driveaway for the short wheelbase ELX with a six-speed manual.

ThelongwheelbaseELXis$38,290driveaway, also with a manual. An auto adds $2000.

Ultimate is priced from $43,090 driveaway, with an auto and metallic paint thrown in. Addingthelongertubtakesthepriceto$44,590 and topping it off with the Luxury Pack takes the total driveaway price to $47,590.

Metallic paint is $495, the XLV Pack $1500 and Ultimate Pack $3000.

Even at these prices it leaves plenty of overhead for further optioning the vehicleand there’s plenty of them.

Sports bars, fender flares, side steps, tub liner, roller tonneau, under-body protection and sports suspension kits are available.

There’s a choice of six colours. Atlantic Blue is standard; Grand White, Silky White Pearl, Marble Grey, Space Black or Indian Red cost extra.

Standard kit includes cloth seats and manual air, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 18-inch alloys, cruise control, LED daytime running lights, front fog lights, projector headlights with integrated LED turn signals, frontandrearparkingsensors, autohighbeam, auto lights and wipers and an auto dimming mirror.

Ultimate adds black 18-inch alloys, artificial leather, heated and cooled front seats, heated steering wheel, 360-degree camera and walk-away locking.

Our test vehicle was the short wheelbase Ultimate with $205 Luxury Pack fitted at $46,685 driveaway.

It adds Nappa leather, dual zone climate air, HID headlights, power-adjust front seats, powered driver lumbar support, heated rear seats and a power operated sunroof.

Musso is covered by a seven-year unlimited kilometre warranty, with seven-year roadside assistance and seven-year capped price servicing.

The warranty extends to commercial use.

Infotainment

Infotainment consists of an 8.0-inch touchscreen, six-speaker audio, Bluetooth,

AM/FM radio and wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto.

It’s not the fastest, or most intuitive system that we have used – but it’s not the worst either.

At times it can be difficult to see, particularly in strong sunlight.

The front console offers two USB-A ports, a 12V/120W power outlet and a cigarette lighter.

Engines / transmissions

A 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel produces 133kW of power at 4000 rpm and 400Nm of torque from 1400-2800 rpm.

The latter figure rises to 420Nm in the longer XLV but is available over a narrower band from 1600 to 2600 rpm, presumably because it is expected to carry heavier loads.

Transmission is six-speed manual or six-speed auto, with drive to the rear wheels and selectable four-wheel drive, with 2Hi, 4Hi and 4Lo ranges. It also has an auto-locking rear diff.

Safety

As yet Musso has not been rated by ANCAP for safety and we cannot justifiably award more than five points for this feature on this basis.

But the safety story is a strong one with six airbags, a rear-view camera and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Front Vehicle Start Warning, Active Rollover Protection and Driver Attention Warning.

Ultimate adds Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Rear Cross Traffic Warning (RCTW) Lane Change Collision Warning (LCW) and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Two ISOFIX and three top tether child seat anchors are provided.

The entry level model lacks reach adjustment for the steering wheel, but in a real faux-pas the rear-centre seating position is equipped only with a lap seat belt.

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen one of these in a modern vehicle.

Driving Musso’s new body-on-frame platform is shared with the SsangYong Rexton.

The rigid body-on-frame design features high strength steel with eight large mounting points that contribute to lower levels of road

noise and a more refined ride.

Weighing up to 2090kg, it can tow a 3500kg braked load and is equipped with trailer sway control as standard.

Steering is hydraulic in ELX but Ultimate scores speed sensitive power steering, with an 11.8-metre or 12.2-metre turning circle depending on wheelbase.

And,insomethingofararityforthesegment, itcomeswithfour-wheeldiscbrakes,ventilated at the front -- most of the more fancied utes still come with rear drums.

With a 75-litre tank, fuel consumption ranges from 7.9 to 9.0L/100km, depending on grade and wheelbase.

Nexen N Priz RH7 road tyres are fitted, with 255/60 18s for Musso and 235/70 17s for XLVsilver for ELX and black for Ultimate.

A full-size spare is provided.

We’ve always felt the tub in the Musso was too short, a bit stubby even compared to other utes. The latest model addresses this issue, at leastwiththelongwheelbaseXLVwhichboasts one of the longest tubs in its class.

Having said that, we were still able to transport a heavy, power adjustable hospital-style bed in the short wheelbase, even though the end jutted over the tailgate.

Fortunately, it was only for a short distance.

Although our test vehicle was not fitted with side steps, grab handles at each of the four doors makes entry easier.

Rear legroom is limited, particularly for knees which press the back of the front seat.

Musso is push-button start and performance is surprisingly strong, both off the mark and in roll-on acceleration.

You can change gears manually with a thumb-operated switch on the side of the transmission lever.

The feel is solid but nothing fancy, with stiff suspension that generates plenty of old school shake and shudder. Large bumps are likely to produce some steering wheel backlash.

The digital instrument cluster looks a bit underdone and while you can choose from three different skins, it needs to be more configurable.

In terms of dimensions, the standard tub is 1300mm x 1570mm x 570mm, with a width of 1100mm between wheel arches. The longer tub is 1600mm, with other dimensions the same.

SPECIFICATIONS

SsangYong Musso Ultimate 4x4 dual cab utility, 2.2-litre turbo-diesel, 6spd automatic, part-time 4WD

Note: These prices are driveaway and include government or dealer delivery charges.

Thefirstholds1011litreswhilethelongertub has a 1262-litre capacity - an increase of almost 25 per cent.

As for off-road capability, Musso presents mainly as a farm or worksite candidate.

Weekend warriors will need to invest in a lift kit and some chunkier all-terrain rubber to tackle anything tougher.

Low range gearing and a locking rear diff deliver plenty of traction, with hill descent control as well as hill start assist to help.

But a silly 23-degree approach angle, modest 215mm ground clearance and equally shy 350mm wading depth are limiting factors, the former when it comes to negotiating tricky fire trails with some rock hopping involved.

But the foundations are good and Musso certainly has potential.

We were getting an impressive 7.1L/100km after more than 500km.

Summing up

Musso is the proverbial value for money.

The styling is generic but the basics are there, it just needs fine tuning to meet market expectations.

To wit we live in a digital world and that means digital radio and a wireless charge pad need to be added.

It’s got the desired black wheels but a sports bar and soft tonneau (at minimum) are needed to complete the look that 4x4 dual cab buyer’s desire.

CarPlay and Android Auto are okay when they work, but when you’re out in the sticks and run out of reception, built-in navigation is your friend.

Theseelectronicaidsareallavailableinother markets, but have obviously been removed to keep down the price.

While resale could be an issue, Musso presents as a quality product with more than enough off-road capability for most, at a price that is frankly difficult to ignore.

Don’t forget the Nappa leather and vented front seats.

United season around the corner

Daniel Penha was the happiest man on earth when he scored his first goal in a Western United jersey last week.

The Brazilian star has arrived at Western United and settled immediately into the side, making his competitive debut against Sydney FCintheAustraliaCupandcatchingtheeyein his brief cameo.

But Penha went one better in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers, scoring early in the second half as United won the clash 2-1.

After being played clean through by Noah Botic, Penha had much of the attacking half to run into and following a lovely dummy shot, the Brazilian blasted a brilliant finish into the back of the net.

Leaping into the air and releasing a wave of emotion, Penha celebrated in style and said after the game that it was a special feeling after the adversity of injury over the last 12 months.

“I can’t tell you. I am so, so, so happy,” he said.

“After I scored, I cried a little bit because the mind can remember the hard times in the last year. I am so happy, I’m looking forward to this season.

“After one year, I’ve come back again and I can play again in the first 11. I’m so happy to score, to help the team. I think this is a good game for the start of the season. I’m so happy to be back again.”

After the club reached the quarter-finals in the Australia Cup for the first time, United is continuing to get up to speed ahead of the A-League Men opener in just over two weeks.

Penha is buoyant about how the side is shapingup, withUnitedaimingtoreturntothe finals after missing out last season.

Fresh face signs on at Wyndham

Wyndham has announced two marquee signings to its Big V championship teams.

Star player Troyce Manassa has made the move across from the Hume Broncos for the 2024 season.

Manassa rejoins Wyndham coach, Lucas Allen, after working together in 2019.

Manassa arrives at the club after spending the last two seasons at the Broncos, where he was a part of the championship men all star side and nominated for the defensive player of the year just last season.

“Wyndham is aligned with my core values both as a player and a person, and I’m excited to join the club and push the Wyndham way forward,” Manassa said.

“With the preexisting relationships I have here, it makes joining a new team so much easier knowing that I’m surrounded by people that I trust”.

Allen said he shared similar sentiments to that of Manassa.

“Troyce was the first person I met with following the end of our season, and we are incredibly excited to have him join us for the 2024 season,” he said.

“The signing of Troyce and the excitement that comes with it is multi-faceted.

“He is experienced internationally, he is a proven winner, we have worked together and won a championship previously, and he is at a stage in his life where his maturity and experiences will be invaluable elements of his leadership within our team“.

Wyndham also announced that American import Amanda Paschal, has put pen to paper to sign for her third season for the championship women side.

The 2023 most valuable player, defensive player of the year, golden hands award winner

and all-star 5 recipient is primed for another big season of BigV, spending her summer time with the Bendigo Spirit in the Women’s National Basketball League.

Championship women’s coach Gerard Hillier said he knows that Paschal’s impact is invaluable and that she will be a huge benefit across the entire Wyndham Basketball community.

“We are extremely excited to have Amanda Paschal join our program again for the 2024 BigVseason, notonlyaneliteplayerandleader on the court but equally impressive with her work ethic in growing the game of basketball in our community here at Wyndham,” he said.

Paschal summed up her feelings towards re-signing succinctly.

“[I’m] excited to get back on the court with my Wyndham family for another year and compete for a Championship,” she said.

Barlow departs Werribee

Werribee Victorian Football League coach

Michael Barlow is departing the club to join the North Melbourne Football Club as development manager.

Just days after guiding Werribee into its first grand final in almost twenty years, Barlow accepted the offer to take the next step in his coaching career.

Barlow played 141 games for Fremantle and the Gold Coast Suns from 2010 to 2018 after being picked up from Werribee in the VFL as a mature-age recruit.

He transitioned into coaching following his departure from the Suns, returning to Werribee as a playing assistant coach for two seasons before being promoted to senior coach ahead of the 2021 season.

In 2023, he was named the VFL coach of the year after leading Werribee to a 17-game winning streak and the side’s first grand final appearance in almost two decades.

Barlow’s connection with Chirnside Park runs deep and he said it is sad to be leaving the

place he loves.

“My love and gratitude for this place is phenomenal,” he said.

“I’m really excited by the opportunity and it’s a really significant opportunity for me, to stepawayfromwhatI’mdoingnowwasnoeasy decision because I’ve once again fallen in love with the Werribee Football Club and its people.

“2024 will be a great year for Werribee no doubt, the sustained level of success is here, the people are here, the environment is here, the energy and attitude is great.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed this stint at Avalon Airport Oval and thank the club for giving me the opportunity. It is a special club with an outstanding administration, great facilities and a culture committed to excellence on and off the field.

“The grand final loss still stings but this playing group gave everything they had and will be better for the experience.”

Werribee’s president Martin Carter said he has mixed emotions about Barlow’s move after

losing former coach, AFL premiership player and coach, Mark Williams at the end of the 2020 season to Melbourne .

“The entire club is delighted for Mick but also disappointed to lose one of our favourite sons to the AFL,” he said.

“Interestingly, our last two senior coaches have been headhunted by AFL clubs, which says a lot about the status of our club and our senior coaching position. We are proud to have played a part in Mick’s football journey firstly as a player when he was drafted to Fremantle and now as his AFL coaching career begins.”

The role of replacing the coaching position falls now to chief executive Mark Penaluna, however, he expects the role will draw a lot of interest.

“Replacing someone of Mick’s calibre is not an easy task but I am sure there are a lot of quality football people who will be keen to join us,” he said.

“It is a position full of possibilities and we are keen to build on what we achieved this year.”

BRIEFS

VFL

AFL clubs are said to be interested in two players from Victorian Football League club Werribee. Former Werribee coach and now head of development at North Melbourne Michael Barlow said Shaun Mannagh and Sam Clohesy are both turning heads. The duo were huge on grand final day with Mannagh collecting the best on ground award in a losing side with his 28 touch, six goal game.

WRFL

Point Cook have announced a trio of list changes following its grand final loss in the Western Region Football League division 1. Luke Dahlhaus, Derek Eggmolesse Smith and Luke Denny are all departing from the club. The club said via social media, “both Derek and Luke D were enormous last season in helping the club avoid relegation and both were big contributors again in 2023 on the clubs path to our first WRFL Div 1 grand final. Dahl stepped straight in from the AFL into local club footy and was instrumental in helping our young group lift standards across the board and the club to become a flag contender… we wish them all the best on their continued footy journeys and goes without saying you are always welcome back at the club.”

VSDCA

The start of the much anticipated Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association season has been postponed due to weather conditions. The first round of matches, scheduled to be two day fixtures will now be played next weekend as one day games, with teams needing to wear coloured outfits and a white ball. Via social media the VSDCA said, “due to the large number of grounds unavailable for play this weekend, the board has decided to cancel all scheduled play.”

Finals appearance a ‘bare minimum’ in 2024

After just missing out on finals in the Geelong and District Football League, Werribee Centrals have made some amendments to their coaching structure. Experienced local coach Nick Diker has joined the fold to give some off-field support to playing-coach Rhyce Prismall.

Prismall said the addition of an experienced coach to help him on the sidelines will be invaluable to him and the team.

“It’llbeunique, becauseIamaplayingcoach, it’s an aspect that some people would see as an advantage but also a disadvantage,” he said.

“EveryyearthatI’vebeenincharge,I’vebeen able to add more people to that gameday role to assist me.

“Butwe’restillabitoffthemeasurecompared to the premiership sides in our competition.

“So, I think the more people we can add is only going to add to our advantage over the

opposition.

“To add someone of Nick’s calibre and experience, it’s going to be huge for me not only to learn from him. A coaching panel that debates and questions and challenges each other is only going to improve each other and theplayersaswell.Itaddsadifferentdynamic.”

The Centurions finished in 10th place in 2022, and rose to seventh this year, it what was a great development year.

“Our goal was to play finals this year, and then we thought it might be a bit of an overstretch,” Prismall said.

“But mid-season we were looking pretty good and it became a reality that we could make finals, but unfortunately it dropped away for a number of reasons.

“So, hopefully with a healthier list and adding some players as well as the addition of Nick, I think finals would be a bare minimum

for us next year.”

The Centurions have been able to hold onto the vast majority of their playing list, which holds them in good stead going forward.

“I think we’ve been able to create an environment where people enjoy coming to training and really enjoy the functions,” Prismall said.

“We had a really good influx of young kids come through the club over the last couple of years, who are really good club people and who have grown up through our junior program together.

“Also the people who we’ve brought in aren’t there to just chase a premiership or their own glory, they’re there to really build something.

“That’s really exciting, they’re willing to spend their social time at our club and really improve it.”

Another award for Muus

Wyndhamvale’s Chloe Muus has taken out the women’s Western Region Football League division 2 best and fairest award.

Muus won with 22 votes, only one above West Footscray’s Roxana Sefton who came second. Spotswood’s Isabel Choate came third polling 16 votes.

This is Muus second league best and fairest after winning the award in 2021, in her first season on football at the Rovers. Muus had previously played football while completing Year 11 and 12 in Mildura.

LastseasonwhilelivinginWesternAustralia she continued playing the game she loves for Baldivis in the Perth Football League.

Upon her return to the WRFL and Wyndhamvale,Muussaidshewasn’texpecting to have the impact that she did.

“I didn’t really think I was a sniff this year,” she said.

“Didn’tthinkIwasgoingtowinanything,so it was a good surprise.”

When Muus first won the award in 2021, the Rovers finished on the bottom of the ladder without winning a game. This season, they were runners up in division 2, coming just two points away from premiership glory.

“Obviously, everyone prefers a team win but sometimes individual awards are nice,” she said.

“Itwasnicethisyeartowinitandforustobe successful, just not completely successful.

“[The improvement in the team has] been massive, when I came back this year and saw the development.

“There were a fair few new girls who have fit right in, but the growth of the girls who have been there since the start [has been massive].

“Some of those girls had never played before that first season [in 2021] and to see how far they’ve come now is awesome.

“Every year we’re getting more new girls coming down, some that have played before and some haven’t.

“So it’s good to see the talent growing so much.”

With another year under the teams’ belt, the next step is obvious for the Rovers, to win the premiership.

“That’s the goal next year,” Muus said.

“But every club is developing at the same time too, so although I think we’re definitely well placed for next year, we’ve got a good group and another 12 months of building, so does everyone else.

“So I definitely wouldn’t rule Laverton out, they’vebeenreallygreat, they’relikeus, they’ve

Werribee VFL academy

The Werribee Football Club has announcedthelaunchofanewprogram thatwillworkinpartnershipwithNorth Melbourne’s next generation academy for multicultural and Indigenous boys and girls in Wyndham.

The program is a joint initiative between the AFL, Werribee Football Club and North Melbourne Football Club focused on identifying, engaging and developing underage talent in non-traditional communities.

The program will target multicultural and Indigenous boys and girls aged 11 to 13 and provide them with access to both high performance resources and facilities as well as high-level coaching.

Werribee Football Club chief executive Mark Penaluna said it was an excellent opportunity for the club.

“We consider ourselves a leader in terms of what we deliver in the community,” he said.

“We’ve been introducing football to people of all ages for many years through in school programs and a range of other initiatives, and we’re thrilled to be adding to that.

“It’s wonderful that the AFL and North Melbourne have given us the tick of approval to partner with North Melbourne’s NGA program, which captures the Wyndham region, and it’s a fantastic opportunity to invest further in the game in Wyndham, particularly in women’s football.

“Wyndham is one of the most culturally diverse areas of the state and we’re excited to start work on increasing the talent pool of multicultural and Indigenous male and female players.”

Over recent months the club has been delivering development programs for boys and girls in years 7 to 9, completing a four-week program at Point Cook College and The Grange College in Hoppers Crossing.

come a long way from where they started.

“So I don’t think it’s going to be a walk in the park next year.

“It’ll definitely be a hard fought year, but [a premiership] is definitely the goal for next year and we’ve definitely got the group that will be able to do it.”

Inotherresults,thedivision1bestandfairest

was awarded to Spotswood’s Molly Althouse for her incredible season.

Althouse was a clear standout in the division polling 25 votes.

Parkside Spurs’ Rita Ceravolo and Werribee Centrals’ Jessica Spall tied for second place on 19 votes. While Caroline Springs’ Caitlin Pretty was fourth on 18 votes.

Werribee has been running communityinitiativesacrossWyndham since 2007 and now employs one full-time and two part-time staff, along with a casual work force.

The club delivers a range of programs with many Wyndham-based schools, local Auskick centres and other organisations including Reclink Australia, Wyndham City Council and The Salvation Army.
