Locals kick up a stink Dynamic DJ crash course

Locals are warning Brimbank council to take lessons from the municipality’s past as it considers a planning permit application for a fertiliser production site in Sunshine North.

When it comes to odour pollution Nicole Power is no stranger to its effects. She believes there is a disproportionate burden borne by the western suburbs.

“Why is the west always the preferred destination for these stinking industries?“ Ms Power questioned.

The prospect of yet another industrial

facility in her local area deeply troubles Ms Power, who said she has been severely impacted by the odour from the Barro landfill for more than four years.

“The letter came in my mailbox and I was just horrified,“ she said.

“To get this notification that there is a possibility I could be impacted again… I think it’s just unconscionable.”

The application includes a proposal for a fertiliser production facility located at 65a Imperial Avenue, Sunshine North.

The application cites that it does not propose any new buildings and works, with the use intended to be fully encompassed

within the existing warehouse on the site.

The facility will be used to produce fertiliser from the microbial digestion of fish to produce a liquid Amino Acid fertiliser and seaweed liquid plant additive. Brimbank council city futures director Kelvin Walsh said council is obligated to consider all planning applications it receives, and that an application placed on public notice does not guarantee that a permit will be issued.

Mr Walsh said council had been contacted by a number of residents who have raised concerns about odour regarding the fertiliser production, which will form part of council’s

assessment of the application.

“In this case the applicant submitted an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) which includes a section on odour suppression, which recommends a number of measures to be implemented to ensure that odour is appropriately managed and minimised. The EMP is included in the advertised material and is available online for public viewing. The application has also been referred to the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) for review and comment,” Mr Walsh said.

Sunshine park clear of asbestos

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has given Fitzgerald Square Reserve in Sunshine West the all clear after samples of mulch were tested for asbestos.

The EPA received a clearance certificate on April 14, from an independent hygienist for Fitzgerald Square Reserve, Sunshine West in the Brimbank council area, with inspections showing the site clear of contamination.

Of the eight pieces of suspect material collected from the reserve and sent for testing, only one tested positive as asbestos containing material.

EPA officers were first onsite on April 9, at the Callaway Boulevard reserve investigating, with samples taken for priority testing.

The asbestos scare started in neighbouring Hobsons Bay where mulch at a number of reserves and parks was found to contain bonded asbestos including at Crofts Reserve, Hosken Reserve and Lynch Reserve, all in Altona North, as well as Burns Reserve, Altona and Donald McLean Reserve, Spotswood. Asbestos has also been found at Merri-bek council’s Shore Reserve in Pascoe Vale South. Brimbank council infrastructure and city services acting director Tom Razmovski said community safety is council’s priority.

“... Council will continue to monitor and inspect its parks and reserves, and act quickly to ensure public safety if any contaminated material is found,” he said.

Mr Razmovski said in addition to council’s regular inspections, it also carried out visual inspections at select council sites including Green Gully Reserve and The Lakes Reserve.

Mr Razmovski said no evidence of foreign substances has been found in the mulch at these sites.

“We primarily use tree chipper mulch in our parks and reserves, made from Brimbank trees that have been pruned, removed, or damaged as a result of storms. These trees are collected

Filmmaker’s mental health tribute

When Caroline Springs filmmaker Giovanna Hammond lost her director of photography to suicide during the COVID-19 pandemic, she swore she would never make another film again.

Hammond and her director of photography hadabondforgedthroughyearsoffilmmaking dedicated to mental health awareness. However, the sudden loss shattered her resolve, leading her to swear off filmmaking altogether.

Yet, a vivid dream reignited her passion, prompting her to honour her colleague’s last wish: to continue advocating for mental health through film. Thus, ‘Mask of Darkness’

was born, a film exploring the masks people wear amidst mental health struggles.

The project became Hammond’s tribute to her late friend, through tears and memories, she poured her heart into the film.

“I felt empowered to get this message out there so that his death doesn’t go in vain. This film is suicide awareness in itself,” she said.

‘Mask of Darkness’ carries a powerful message about the importance of genuine connections and community support in combating mental illness.

Hammond emphasises the need for individuals to check in with loved ones and recognise the signs of hidden struggles.

“The main message of this movie is for people to really check in with people. If you have a gut feeling that someone is not ok then just ask, and really notice. Really deeply check in with people… sometimes people say they’re ok but they’re not,” she said.

Hammond proudly notes her daughter’s involvement, who wrote and performed the film’s theme song, stepping out of her comfort zone to contribute to the cause.

As the film prepares to make its rounds in international film festivals, Hammond invites viewers to subscribe to her YouTube channel Locked In Productions, where ‘Mask of Darkness’ will be shared after its festival run.

Time to stand for council

Brimbank council is calling all community leaders and potential candidates to get inspired through the Municipal Association of Victoria’s (MAV) Stand for Council campaign.

To support potential candidates ahead of the council elections later this year, Brimbank council in partnership with the MAV, are hosting regional-based information sessions to provide information and inspiration.

The metropolitan west session will be hosted by Wyndham council on Wednesday, June 5.

The MAV will also be providing a citizentocouncillorguideforprospective candidates to further understand the roles and responsibilities of a councillor and the importance of this elected position.

Brimbank council chief executive Fiona Blair said the importance of strong localleadershipcouldnotbeunderstated.

“Brimbank council has a rich legacy of community representation, made possible by the dedication of our community leaders,” she said.

“I encourage anyone contemplating candidacytoattendtheupcomingsession or join virtually. The Stand for Council session will provide valuable insights to those considering on embarking on the journey of becoming a councillor.”

MAV chief executive Kelly Grisby said “If you are thinking of nominating for council as a candidate, these sessions and resources will help you to further consider the broad responsibilities of a councillor, the wide range of issues you will be required to make decisions about and the time commitment,” she said.

Ms Power said there are significant mental health implications of constant exposure to industrial odour.

“I think there needs to be something in place if you’re going to stick a fertilising plant right in the middle of houses,“ she said.

“I’m just tired of the fight for trying to breathe fresh air.

“I know odour is subjective, but people don’t realise the mental health impacts

of constant odour. It permeates my whole home. I’ve had countless sleepless nights.”

Ms Power said the burden of advocating against such projects has taken a toll on residents like herself.

“Your life is consumed by reports, meetings, and complaints. It’s more than just odour, it’s bigger than that. I’m stuck in the middle of hell,” she said.

“I do understand that residential and industry have to coexist, but this is just another kick in the guts to locals. How much more do they want to throw at us?”

“There are always so many precautions put in place that constantly fail. Have we not learnt already from what’s happened in this area?”

Push for Calder action

Brimbank council is calling for all hands on deck at it once again rallies for both the federal and state governments to ‘Fix the Calder’.

Council will host a community event on Saturday, April 20, at Overnewton Gatehouse Hall, Keilor, from 9.30am to launch a new advocacy brochure on ‘Improving the Calder Highway’.

Council said the Calder is one of Australia’s most dangerous roads and safety upgrades are “urgently needed.”

The brochure has been produced by the Calder Highway Improvement Committee (CHIC), which consists of the councils of Brimbank, Buloke Shire, Greater Bendigo, Hume, Loddon Shire, Macedon Ranges Shire, Melton, Mildura, and Mount Alexander Shire.ThebrochureoutlinesCHIC’spriorities for improving safety on the Calder Highway.

Since Brimbank council first launched the Fix the Calder campaign in April 2021, the state government has made a range of announcements including, a $50 million investment for minor upgrades, planning and investigativeworks, thelevelcrossingremoval at Calder Park Drive, due for completion in 2025, and a now completed business case to investigate a diamond interchange at Calder Park Drive.

Council said while these are important and welcome first steps, there is still “a long way to go.”

Council has expressed it’s dissapointment with the federal government’s decision to withdraw the $50 million promised by the previous government, noting that it was only a “fraction“ of what is required. Brimbank council is now calling on the federal government to reassess the project and provide adequate funding to make the Calder safe. It is also calling on the state

government to increase its $50m funding commitment and release the findings and recommendations of the Calder Park Drive Interchange business case. Council said works are needed to upgrade the Calder Freeway between the Western Ring Road (M80) and the Melton Highway to bring it up to freeway standard, add lanes from Keilor Park Drive to Melton Highway, widen the Maribyrnong River Bridge, build a full diamond interchange at the intersection of the Calder Freeway and Calder Park Drive and duplicate Calder Park Drive between the

Blending music with art

The Hunt Club Community Arts Centre is currently adorned with a display of artworks, each echoing the notes of different musical compositions.

This unique exhibition, ’The Art in Music,’ is a collaborative project by students from the Paul Borg Art School.

Studentsweretaskedwithlisteningtoapiece of music and creating an artwork inspired by it. Ranging from ages 11 to 70, the artists took on a creative journey that spanned generations and genres.

Each artwork is accompanied by a QR code that viewers can scan with their smartphones, instantly transporting them into the auditory realm of the artists’ inspiration.

Among the participating artists is Sunshine local, Jeff Willis, who shared his insights into his artistic process and the inspiration behind his chosen pieces.

“The project was open to all students, with the freedom to interpret the music theme in their own way,” Willis said.

“For my pieces, I selected two songs for very different reasons.“

His first choice, “Low“ by Flo Rida is rooted

in surrealism.

“There’s a catchy lyric in the song that mentions ‘apple bottom jeans, boots with the fur,’ which I really like,” Willis said.

“Drawing from surreal influences, I translated those songs into a painting, painting two actual apple bottom jeans.”

For his second piece, Willis delved into the iconic realm of rock and roll with KISS’ “I Was Made for Loving You.”

Willis said he was initially drawn to the idea of portraying a statue of Infant Jesus of Prague. However, as he delved deeper into the symbolism of music and worship, the painting evolved into a statement piece about the high regard musicals are held in.

In his rendition, baby Jesus transforms into a rock deity commanding the stage with a defiant rock salute and a guitar adorned with angel wings.

Brimbank mayor Ranka Rasic said she encourages everyone who uses the Calder Highway to support council’s call for urgent action by state and federal governments.

“Attend the community event to learn more about the call to fix this dangerous road and how you can support the campaign.

“The Calder Highway is a dangerous road that can no longer wait for upgrades. The community desperately needs this road fixed, and we need it fixed now.”

Tails wagging over dog park

Residents are invited to meet with Brimbankcounciltodiscusstheproposal for the dog park in Taylors Lakes Linear Easement.

The dog park in Sandpiper Drive will includeaspacefordogsandtheirowners, open space and improved facilities, a fully enclosed space and separate area for small dogs, drinking fountain, bins, dog waste bag dispensers, signage and seating.

Council has developed a draft concept plan for the proposed dog park which shows the proposed location of access gatesandfeatures.Onesectionofthepark will be enclosed to allow for a shared user path to be built in the future so there is a separation between path users and dogs. Council said currently the large size and linear shape of the fenced area between Kings Road and Sandpiper Drive does not follow dog park design guidelines, meaning there needs to be adequate ability for owners to control and re-call their dogs.

One section will be enclosed, while the remaining dog off-leash area will be retained, but with fencing removed.

Council will conduct an onsite Listening Post at the Taylors Lakes Dog Park,17ASandpiperDrive,TaylorsLakes on Saturday April 20, between 10am–noon. To view the draft concept plan visit, https://news.brimbank.vic.gov.au/ proposed-new-dog-park-in-taylorslakes/

Support our call for urgent action by State and Federal Governments to make the Calder safe. The Calder is one of Australia’s most dangerous roads and safety upgrades are urgently needed. Since we launched the Fix the Calder campaign in April 2021, the State Government announced:

• $50 million for minor upgrades, planning and investigative works

• the level crossing removal at Calder Park Drive, due for completion in 2025

• a business case (now completed) to investigate a diamond interchange at Calder Park Drive These are important and welcome first steps, but there is still a long way to go. We were also very disappointed with the Federal Government’s decision to withdraw the $50m promised by the previous government, especially as this is only a fraction of what is required.

Our call for government action

We’re calling on the Federal Government to:

• reassess the project and provide adequate funding to make the Calder safe.

We’re calling on the Victorian Government to:

• release the findings and recommendations of the Calder Park Drive Interchange business case

• increase its $50m funding commitment.

Students embrace arts

Year 9 students from St Albans Secondary College have participated in a project to create temporary public artwork as part of RMIT University’s 2024 SmArts program.

The SmArts program is part of The Smith Family charity’s evidence-based learning and mentoring programs, aimed at nourishing a young person’s educational journey through creative arts.

RMIT has worked in close partnership with the national children’s education charity to bring to life its latest project ’Tables, we need more tables.’

Each student drew inspiration from the featured works of more than 120 artists, designers and collectives at the forefront of global contemporary practice before taking partinanumberofcreativeworkshopsfocused on digital and analogue methods to develop their artwork.

Students immersed themselves in four days of workshops over a four-week period, exploring the theme within the context of sustainability and climate change, reflecting on their experience, desire for change and reimagining the future.

Works were unveiled at the Hunt Club Community And Arts Centre, Deer Park where they will remain on public display, and visible to passing motorists along Ballarat Road, throughout April.

Jack is one of a growing number of students learning how art can influence the way they view the world around us, all the while discoveringimportantpathwaystofuturework and study.

“Art has always been an influence in my life,” he said.

“What I’ve loved about the program is having the chance to tap into some new creative process, producing pieces of work for a portfolio – which I’ll need for work and

study – and getting a look into the types of opportunities available to further my passion once I finish high school.”

Brimbank council deputy mayor Jae Papalia said working collaboratively with The Smith Family and RMIT on the project had opened new doors for students to engage with their local community and helped them build new

skills and learn about post-school pathways.

The Smith Family Victorian general manager Anton Leschen said SmArts has been an essential program in helping students from disadvantaged backgrounds build on their artistic skills while learning about important pathways from high school to further training and education and career opportunities.

Have your say on lake

Melton council is inviting residents to have their say on the future of Lake Caroline.

The Lake Caroline draft masterplan and activation strategy will guide how council develops and activates the reserve and its surroundings.

Initial stages of the draft strategy involved detailed site assessment, community consultation and background analysis.

Melton council said both the lake and reserve are 20 years old, and many facilities are due for upgrades in coming years.

More than 500 responses submissions were received during community and stakeholder consultation undertaken in 2023. Top suggestions included markets, seasonal celebrations and festivals, floating cafes, and rentable boats.

Facilities outlined as part of the draft plan include a mid-lake crossing, dedicated event lawn, playspace upgrade, a shared zone along Lake Street for markets and festivals, and new viewing platforms.

Melton deputy mayor Steve Abboushi said he encourages everyone to have their say on the future of this “important community asset.”

“Lake Caroline is a beautiful outdoor site, popularwithresidentsofallagesand backgrounds.Thisstrategywillguidethe future development and activation of the lake and its surrounds,” Cr Abboushi said.

Second charged over shooting

Police have charged a second man as part of their investigation into the fatal shooting of crime figure Gavin Preston in Keilor last year.

NSW police arrested Yagoona man, Rabii Abram Zahabe, in the Sydney CBD on October 10 last year. He was remanded in custody on unrelated NSW matters.

Victoria Police detectives travelled to New SouthWalesonApril11,andchargedtheman with murder in relation to the fatal shooting.

He appeared at Bathurst Local Court on April 11, where police successfully made an

application to extradite him to Victoria.

Zahabe remained quiet during his brief filing hearing in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday, April 12.

His lawyer Ben Jamieson told the court there were no custody management issues.

The 24-year-old was remanded in custody until his next court appearance in May.

On October 25, 2023, another man – Jaeden Tito – was arrested at his Bradbury home in Sydney’s southwest and charged with murder over Preston’s fatal shooting.

Almost ready to serve

In preparation for the opening of Victoria State Emergency Service’s (VICSES) newest unit in Aintree, volunteers have passed a major milestone.

A blend of both seasoned and fresh recruits have completed their initial training at the VICSES Melton unit. This milestone marks a crucial step in ensuring the readiness of emergency responders for the community in Melbourne’s west.

Scheduled to commence operations later this year, the Aintree unit will play a pivotal role in delivering essential emergency aid.

Most recently volunteers focused on familiarising themselves with the unit’s Medium Rescue Truck (MRT), with plans for supervised crew member training and more advanced exercises to follow shortly.

With construction of the unit’s state-of-the-art facility nearing completion, 25 dedicated volunteers have already committed

to serving in the unit which will service the growth corridor bridging Melton and Melbourne’s western suburbs, including Caroline Springs.

Among the eager volunteers are local residents Tanya Inkret and her husband, Alex Setterfield, driven by a shared passion for community service. Tanya said she and Alex were proud to be part of the new unit.

“Being part of VICSES’ new Aintree unit is a fantastic opportunity to give back to a community I now call home,” she said.

“Nothing has been too hard for our trainers and support staff, and it has created an inviting and accommodating atmosphere which I’m proud to be a part of.”

The Aintree unit is poised to accommodate up to 70 volunteers, with its new facility boasting six vehicle bays and its own large training space.

Melbourne to face further charges.

Preston, 50, was killed and a 26-year-old South Morang man he was dining with critically injured after shots were fired outside the Sweet Lulus cafe in Keilor Village on September 9, 2023.

Security camera footage showed a hooded gunman dressed in black running from the passenger side door of a black SUV and firing several shots from a handgun at Preston, who fell to the ground.

Preston died at the scene. The other man underwent emergency surgery on gunshot wounds to his stomach.

The injured victim started to run away after seeing the gunman approach, as other diners fled and hit the deck as shots rang out.

No one else was injured in the incident.

Preston was released from Barwon Prison in February 2023 after serving 11 years for defensive homicide over the fatal 2012 shooting of 41-year-old Adam Khoury, a Melbourne drug dealer.

He suffered nine stab wounds, several cuts to his face and head and a 15cm cut down his right jawline during an attack in the maximum security prison’s exercise yard in 2014.

Van full of relief arriving

In an attempt to address food insecurity, Anglicare Victoria’s food relief van will soon roll into Sunshine and Sydenham.

Generous donor Peter Manger paid for the van in full and also for it to be equipped with fridges, after learning about the situation experienced by many families across the west, where putting food on the table every night has become a difficult task.

Now retired, Mr Manger had a successful career as an engineer and said he wants to give back to those less fortunate.

“Growing up in a lower middle class family… I’ve seen the other side of it,” he said.

“It’s important that we give back, so I donated money for the van and for some fridges.”

Anglicare Victoria program manager dioceses and parish partnerships Chris de Pavia said it was a huge boost to be able to bring necessary support to families in need.

“A lot of our current sites don’t have the capacity to store fresh fruit and vegetables so we give out food vouchers, but with the van, we’ll be able to top up our services, and people will walk away with twice the amount of food,” he said.

“We want to give out as much food as we can. At the moment we are really under the pump with demand, since pre-COVID times the amount of people we are supporting has doubled.

Asthesunfadesandthecoldweathercreeps back as winter nears, Anglicare Victoria is also launching its winter appeal, to make more initiatives such as the relief van possible.

Looking to take hunger off the table for all families, Anglicare Victoria chief executive Paul McDonald urged everyone to give what they can to ensure a winter of full stomachs.

He explained that in the last 12 months, there has been 53,000 relief assists provided by Anglicare Victoria, a major increase on previous years, and said it was alarming how many people were reaching out for the first time.

“In the last year, four in 10 of the families we see have never been to an emergency relief service before,” he said.

“This has led us to taking food and provisions straight out to the community, through efforts such as a van.

“We are launching our appeal, and we are seeing how we can bring relief services more effectively and more impactful than just giving people a bag of groceries, we want to give further support to families in need.”

Arrests made after brawl

Two Cairnlea men are among nine people arrested after a street brawl on January 26.

Police arrested nine men between March 25 and April 3 following a public appeal for assistance.

Police will allege two groups of approximately 50 men, who had been supporting opposing teams at a soccer game, became involved in a physical altercation while making their way towards Flinders Street railway station after the game.

Five security marshals, who were escorting one group, attempted to break up the brawl which extended towards Russell Street. Two men were treated by paramedics after sustaining injuries to their face.

The 24-year-old was charged with affray, and will face the magistrates’ Court on June 13.

A 21-year-old Bulleen man and two 27-year old Cairnlea men were charged with affray and failing to comply with a direction to assist.

A 20-year-old Mount Duneed man, an 18-year-old Dandenong North man, and a 26-year-old St Kilda man were released pending summons for affray offences.

A 17-year-old Mount Waverley boy was issued with a caution.

Detectives have released images of a further nine men they wanted to identify in relation to the incident.

While two have been identified, there are still seven men police are wanting to speak to. This includes four men who police believe may be from NSW.

Push for more to know common signs of stroke

The Stroke Foundation is urging Aussies to think ‘Arms in April’ in a bid to raise awareness of the least known common sign of stroke.

The month-long campaign encourages Australians to learn that inability to lift both arms is a sign of stroke, along with the other common signs; facial droop, and slurred speech.

It comes after new data from the foundation’s most recent F.A.S.T. National Awareness Survey found that only 10 per cent of Australians are aware of the common stroke sign compared to facial droop (39 per cent) and slurred speech (58 per cent). Stroke Foundation chief executive Dr Lisa Murphy said this is a major concern.

“When it comes to a stroke, time is critical and can be the difference between life and death or a good recovery and long term disability,” she said.

“If there’s a delay in getting emergency treatment because the stroke wasn’t identified fast enough due to not knowing that inability to lift both arms is a sign, then that’s a major concern and we need Australians to join us in our charge to change that.”

According to National Stroke Audit data, close to 57 per cent of Australian stroke patients present to hospital with arm deficit but every year it remains the most unrecognised sign.

“Asignificantproportionofstrokepatients are arriving to hospital with this indicator of stroke so it’s concerning that the majority of Australians don’t know it’s a sign,” she said.

Stroke risk factors

High blood pressure: High blood pressure can damage the walls of blood vessels, and it can lead to heart problems. It can cause clots or plaques to break off and block an artery in the brain. High blood pressure is also the strongest risk factor for haemorrhagic stroke.

Type 2 diabetes: Type 2 diabetes affects the body’s ability to absorb glucose (sugar), and can lead to fatty deposits or clots in blood vessels.

High cholesterol: Cholesterol can build up in plaques on the walls of arteries, narrowing the artery and leading to a clot.

Atrial fibrillation or irregular pulse:

An irregular heartbeat causes stagnant blood flow through the heart, and can cause a clot that then goes to the brain.

“We’re asking Aussies to think ‘A’ for arms and equip themselves with the life-saving knowledge of recognising this key stroke sign.”

The Heart Foundation encourages all Australians to make time for a health check with their doctor or pharmacist about stroke risk factors.

‘Living grief’ confronting families

Gisborne’s Tamara Wilson says watching her daughter battle an eating disorder was a form of ‘living grief’. With eating disorders on the rise, more and more Australian families are confronting this distressing health issue as Zoe Moffatt reports.

When Gisborne mother Tamara Wilson sat with her daughter at the Royal Children’s Hospital in 2012 she felt an overwhelming sense of grief start to wash over her. Grief that she was losing her then 14-year-old daughter Brooke to an eating disorder.

Sitting next to her mother, Brooke would have bruising on her back from sit ups and excessive exercise, her eyes would be sunken in and dark, and her lips would start to turn blue.

For Tamara and Brooke, the next 20 or so monthswouldinclude22hospitaladmissions, regular ambulance rides, feeding tubes, fights atmealtimes, missedschooltimeandcopious appointments with healthcare professionals.

Butthetoughestpartforthemother-of-three was the grief that she was losing her daughter.

“I remember sitting in ward rounds next to Brooke and [she] was just a shell of [a] person,” Tamara said.

“A shell of the person that I had given birth to and brought up and, and loved and continued to love but she just wasn’t there anymore.

‘‘ I was shocked and devastated and felt like I had neglected her, like that I should have seen all of this sooner ’’ - Tamara Wilson

“Therewasalivinggriefthatcomes with it as a carer or as a parent, which is – and took a lot of time to accept –that this was going to be our life.”

While this reality may seem far flung from most Australians, it is a reality that is creeping its way into more and more lives. A recent report from the national eating disorder charity only supports this.

The Butterfly Foundation report released in February estimated 1.1 million Australians, or 4.5 per cent, are currently living with an eating disorder.

The report estimates 10.5 per cent of Australians will experience an eating disorder at some point in their lifetime. If there are nine other people near you, take a look around because statistically one of you will be affected.

For Tamara however, this was a circumstance she never thought would enter her life.

When Tamara noticed Brooke was losing a lot of weight quickly she took her to doctors, but after an unhelpful and dismissive appointment, Tamara said she started to do her own research.

“[I felt] more confused and more lost. [Brooke] continued to lose weight.

“I looked up eating disorders, and got an information page that I printed out and read. I then sat down with Brooke and said, ‘I think this is what we’re dealing with’.”

When talking about this timeline, Tamara admits she probably didn’t approach the conversation the best way and was “quite judgemental”.

Two days later Brooke was taken to the emergency department and admitted to hospital for the first time on what became a long journey.

“IwasshockedanddevastatedandfeltlikeI had neglected her, like that I should have seen all of this sooner.

“I honestly thought it would be a case of they’ll pop her on a drip, they’ll rehydrate her, they’ll put some food into her, and we’ll come home and it’ll all be better.

“Completely naive to the journey that we were on.”

Tamara runs Gisborne health promotion charity P.S. My Family Matters.

Tamara said Brooke still struggles with her weight but is thriving.

In the following years Brooke would go on to finish year 11 but not complete her final year of schooling.

“Shespentmoretimeinhospitalinherteens than she did at home. We had an ambulance at our house every week that she was home,” Tamara said.

Tamarawouldalsohavetoshutdownalarge portion of her business to care for Brooke, but thanks to the generosity of one client she was able to keep up with her mortgage.

“They paid for my mortgage for six months, they put a cleaner in my house for six months and they continue to employ me at the same rate.

“I don’t think I would have survived without that support.”

Fast forward to today, Brooke is a registered nurse and has an 11-month-old baby, and

“The pregnancy was particularly difficult for her. She still exercises and she has a very, very rigid routine around food and exercise but she lives a very normal life,”

Tamara said.

“I call her my little miracle. We treasure every second of life with her and celebrate all of our successes.”

While Tamara and Brooke’s experience with eating disorders can be rounded out to two people who are thriving, the same cannot be said for a growing number of Australians who are affected.

The Butterfly Foundation’s report is the second edition of ‘Paying the Price’ after the first edition in 2012, and reveals a 21 per cent increase in the number of people with eating disorders.

In 2023, there were 1273 deaths due to an eating disorder.

It also found 27 per cent of individuals with an eating disorder are aged 19 years or younger, an increase of 12 per cent since 2012.

Tamara said it’s appalling that it has taken more than a decade for another report of this kind to be published.

She said the thing that peaked her interest was that more people died from an eating disorder last year than the road toll, which was 1266 fatalities.

“There is so much put into saving people in the road toll and reducing that, yet eating disorders are neglected. I think it’s terrible.

“I support a lot of families within the Macedon Ranges and Sunbury that have children with eating disorders, and it’s so challenging, they don’t know where to go.”

Tamarasaidtheotherthingthatshenoticed from the report is that early intervention needs so much more attention.

“Trying to get that early intervention is really challenging because you can’t get the really good services until you’re critical.

“I have families that are waiting for admissions… [those affected] are skin and bone and the parents are just watching them die.

“It’s swept under the carpet and there still is a huge stigma – it is a mental illness, there is still stigma around mental health and mental illness.”

Education works hand-in-hand with early intervention, and Tamara said there needs to be education in schools and education to parents on how to model healthy eating behaviours.

If you or someone you know needs support with an eating disorder the Butterfly Foundation can be contacted on 1800 334 673, or via an online chat or email. Details: https:// butterfly.org.au/

Get in quick for Audi RS Q3

One of the most popular pastimes in the world, Monopoly, and the Audi RS Q3 sports utility vehicle have much in common.

The board game deals with high finance and real estate, the SUV high performance motoring; both rely heavily on figures.

Thelatterhasjustaddedalotmoreofthelatter to the list with its RS Q3 Sportback Edition 10 Years, as the suffix suggests with reference to its decade of success. Audi is making only 555 specials in celebration, with a ‘healthy number’ slated for Down Under.

“This edition pays great tribute to the best of SUV performance in the RS Q3 Sportback,” saysAudiAustraliadirectorJeffManning, who has no doubts about the sales success of the anniversary edition in this country.

“Australia as a market is so performance focused and I have no doubt that owners will enjoy exclusive RS touches in this special model,” he adds.

The RS Q3 Sportback 10 Years is based on the storied RS Q3 with a raft of unique features inside and out, not least the award winning 2.5 TFSI turbocharged five-cylinder motor, producing an unrivalled bass note.

Inkeepingwiththisisanexclusivecollection of accoutrements such as black 21-inch alloy wheels, matching Audi badging and brake callipers, plus race-inspired front bucket seats with contrasting copper honeycomb stitching.

TheRSQ3SportbackEdition10Yearscomes with Audi’s five-year unlimited kilometre warranty, plus 12-year manufacturer warranty for bodywork against corrosion. Owners also receive membership during the warranty period to the Audi Experience with access to exclusive events, Ambassador experiences and premium partner offers.

Styling Stand-out exclusive colours are Dew Silver matt or metallic Chronos Grey, the latter providing a strong base for darkened matrix LED headlamps, with dynamic turn indicators and matching wing mirror housings. A glossy black roof frame, window rims, and doortrimpointthewaytocopycatfrontspoiler blades and diffuser insert. The Audi four rings

Interior Race-style front bucket seats have a lot going for them – big bolsters for snug lateral support (handy on dramatic direction changes) and covered in leather and Dinamica, black with contrasting copper coloured honeycomb stitching and backrest in matt carbon.

Here’s the bad news: while both seats are heated, theyarereducedtomanualadjustment; nopowerhere.Thisisnotwhatwehavebecome used to in a $100,000 car.

Never mind, the RS sport steering wheel makesupfortheabsence, beingclothedinsexy suede-style Alcantara with copper stitching, which is repeated in the gear lever gaiter. Ambient LED lighting adds the finishing touches to the luxe surroundings.

TheRSQ3EditionTenYearsleavesitsunique signature with illuminated door sill trims and a red 3-D diamond projected onto the ground when the door is opened.

Saying the car is a five-seater is stretching things; the rear is short on width. The boot will take 530 litres of cargo with the 60:40 rear seat backs up, expanding to 1400 litres with them folded. An electric tailgate includes gesture control.

Infotainment

The set-up features MMI navigation through a 10.1-inch touch screen, Audi Connect Plus, Audi phone box light and wireless smartphone charging.

There are two USB-C power outlets up front, along with a 12V plug down by twin cup holders.

Audi virtual cockpit plus with a 12.3-inch display can be configured to present the driver with several layers of easily accessible information to maximise the driving experience, or not.

Engines/transmissions

The award winning TFSI five-cylinder engine pumps out 294 kW of power, 17 per cent more than the previous RS Q3 motor. Maximum torque of 480 Nm, on tap between 1950 and 5850 rpm runs the quattro permanent all-wheel drive via a seven-speed S tronic dual clutch transmission.

Safety

ANCAP safety is not rated, as is the case with many sports specials. However, there is no skimping on active safety, with adaptive cruise assist with Stop&Go function, Audi pre-sense front with autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and lane keeping assist.

The 360-degree cameras, plus rear and front parking alarms instil confidence when faced with crowded car parks.

Driving

AndsototheAudiRSQ3SportbackEdition10 Years figures. The Car can hit 100km/h from standstill in 4.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 250km/h. Audi claims fuel consumption of 8.9 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban/highway cycle.

Thetestcarrecordedjustover10litresper100 kilometres in city stop/start motoring and 6.4 litresper100kilometresonamainlymotorway run. That apart, it’s the accompanying exhaust note that really takes the cake.

The odd number of cylinders with their unique firing order of 1-2-4-5-3 deliver a deep sonorous sound via twin barrels with exhaust flap control and gloss black oval tailpipe trims. The RS sport suspension with adaptive dampers has the car on best behaviour around city streets but still gets a grip when things are set loose on fast bends or sharp corners.

Bits to play with include driving modes, powertrain monitoring and performance tracking.

Positive steering is backed up by Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system, while braking has the heft to pull up the vehicle with the assurance the driver demands of a high-performance sports car.

Summary

Narrow loss to Boroondara

The Western Warriors are wondering what might have been after nearly ending the Boroondara Express’ unbeaten run in the Victorian Netball League championship on Wednesday night.

Afterasolidperformancethepreviousround against last season’s champions, the City West Falcons, theWarriorstookplentyofconfidence into Wednesday night with the Express.

The Warriors led throughout the game but were never able to break the experienced Express line up.

That experience shone through late, with the Express sneaking home, winning 56-55.

For Warriors coach Kim Bailey, it was a real bittersweet feeling after the match.

“One goal to the team that hasn’t lost yet is really pleasing but heartbreaking at the same time because we had that game

“I suppose it showed that it’s only our sixth game together.

“I think if you look at it when we play next time, it’ll be a much different game as well and we’re getting better at reading each other every single week.

“Disappointingwiththelastbutmaybewe’ve scared some teams.”

Bailey said the result showed that they can match it with the top teams. She said they tried somedifferentthingsthatworkedwellforlarge parts of the game.

“They played a wall really well on us and we knew that they were going to play a wall, so we went back and we trained for it,“ she said. “Then we actually trained to do the box

properly ourselves and it’s just knowing when to do the switch from a wall of the box to one on one

“Wehadacoupleoflittleerrorslikesomeone got a falcon and just little things that didn’t go our way, but you have to live with those.”

Bailey said it was a bit of a mixed bag with player performances for her side.

Kim Borger put up 42 goals to again be the main target up front.

“One of the big improvers in our team… is Jasmine Fraser,” Bailey said.

“First year playing championship, and she’s justbuiltweekonweekandtoplayon[Isabelle] Hodgson and do such a great job there was really good.

“To have Nat [Tommasini] come in and having Ruby [Barkmeyer] taken off her, I thought it was awesome as well.

“Julia [Woolley] just run and ran and run tonight.

“Our goalers are they’re not the youngest goalers in the world, but I’ll tell you what their the most skilful.”

The Warriors under-23s had another tough night, losing to the Express 64-45.

Bailey said that side was still a work in progress, they just can’t gel yet.

“I don’t think the trust in each other is there yet,” she said. “We just need to go out there and do it.”

The Warriors this week face the Bendigo Strikers. The Strikers championship team also lost by one goal to the Casey Demons on Wednesday night.

“They’ve done really well,” Bailey said. It’s a really mixed bag this season.”

Strong start for Westgate after squad changes

Early points are crucial for Westgate in the FV state league 1 north-west season.

With a new coach, more than half a new side and not playing at home until round seven, it will take some time for the side to settle.

After a win and draw in its first two matches, coach Peter Schwellinger is happy

“So far, so good,” he said before Friday’s round three match with Upfield.

“We’ve had two away games and undefeated. The first game we won against Geelong a side which had been relegated.

“Then we were away against Yarraville and played almost 80 minutes with 10 men. We battled hard and showed real character and got a draw.”

Schwellinger said the draw against Yarraville really showed the heart of the team as their backs and midfielders made it so the Glory couldn’t break them.

Schwellinger, who was appointed coach in December, said there had been a number of changes to the squad in the off season.

“We’ve had a good start with a lot of new players,” he said. “It’ll still take them a few

rounds to peak.

“More than half the team is new, so it’s quite a lot.

“We’ve got some players from our opposition like Borbor [Sam] who have come across and is a dangerous forward.

“Jayden [Iliovski] came from Geelong last year. Frankie [Serratore] and Luca [Santilli] come from previously playing in the NPL.

“They are experienced older players. Young Luka [Krstevski] has come from Hume City.

Schwellinger, who has returned to coaching after a couple of seasons off, said he feels like he’s been at Westgate the whole time and the whole club has been extremely welcoming.

With work being done on their home ground it’s still a few weeks before they will play at home.

Schwellinger said the ability to get points on the road would be crucial as they aim to be towards the top of the ladder.

“Hopefully we get the three points at home, but the ability to get three points or even one point away is important.

“We’re looking good the first two games.”

Westgate was set to face Upfield on Saturday in round three after deadline.

“They were fifth last year,” Schwellinger said. “For me it’s a bit of a blank canvas.

Falcons build into win

The City West Falcons came out on top at home against Geelong Cougars in front of a big crowd in the Victorian Netball League championship.

In one of their home matches at Altona Sports Centre, the Falcons slowly built into the match before coming away with a 62-47 win on Wednesday night.

Falcons coach Marg Lind said it wasn’t their best performance but they were able to come away with the points.

“It took a while to get there,” she said. “They are a good outfit and they have a rotating circle and are hard to defence.”

Lind said they didn’t make the most of their opportunities with the ball and had several turnovers that they normally wouldn’t have. She said they tried to find the right combinations again and it took some time.

“We’re still trying to find the right mix,” she said. “It was a bit better with using Genevieve [Ogier] off the bench and giving Uneeq [Palavi] a bit of a break

“We didn’t help Jane at all and we put her under a lot of pressure and we were running an extra ball to get her at a better angle.”

With the connection to Cook not working, Shimona Jok had her best game for the Falcons.

She shot 37 goals in 41 minutes on court, not missing a shot.

Lind said with Jok having a bit more agility than Cook it seemed to work better.

It’s been a big week for Jok, who was on Thursday officially named as the Melbourne Mavericks 11th player for the Suncorp Super Netball season. She could get called up any time during the season to be part of the Mavericks match day squad.

Lind said it was something that Jok had been aiming for.

Overall, Lind said it was a team effort on Wednesday night with no standouts.

“We had to grind it out a bit,” she said. “ We were our own worst enemy at times though.”

After six rounds, the Falcons sit in third sport, with four wins and a loss.

The Falcons under-23 side also had a good win, beating the Cougars, 53-42.

“They played really well,” Lind said. “It was an interesting game with both sides having three players at nationals.

“Our development girls int he under-19s having been playing in the super series and they were ready to go .

“All three come in and got a run, which is good for our pathway,”

The Falcons this week face the Peninsula Waves on Wednesday night.

The Waves championship side is the only one in championship division without a win.

“They are still shooting about 50 goals a game,” she said.

“It’s a good opportunity to run a different line and run some players that we need to get time into.

“We don’t underestimate any of them.”

The 21-year-old was United’s inaugural signing and now becomes the first player to put pen to paper for season three. Cerne has relished the opportunity to shine in the West and will strive to help Western United build further into the future. “I was lucky enough to be given the first contract for Western and start building with the Club. Hopefully next season it’ll be more of an opportunity for me to be a leader.“ United played in an elimination final against the Newcastle Jets on Saturday, after deadline.

Calder settle into new home at Keilor Lodge

Calder United will call Keilor Lodge home for 11 games this season as the club forms a partnership with Sydenham Park.

The National Premier League Women’s team was set to be without a home venue until Sydenham Park stepped up to help out.

Reds vice-president David Lisolajski expressed the club’s enthusiasm, stating they were extremely stoked and thrilled to host Calder United senior women’s teams at Keilor Lodge Reserve in 2024.

“When we learned that they were without a home venue, it was an obvious choice for us to reach out and assist,” he said.

“Women’s football holds significant importance for us at Sydenham, and we believe thispartnershipwillbenefitouryounggirlsand both senior women’s teams. They will witness professionalism first hand during match days.”

Calder United president Amanda Stella expressed anticipation in developing a successful partnership to bring the top league women’s NPLW to Sydenham Park in 2024.

Stella said it had been a tough period as they figured out where they were playing this

season.TheclubisstillbasedoutofKeilorPark and trains at the ground.

The club has previously had exemptions to play games on ground number two despite it not being up to NPLW standard, but Football Victoria made the call to withdraw the exemption this season.

“The ground allocations for this year had already been made,” Stella said. “I don’t blame Football Victoria, we understand they want to improve the women’s game.

“Keilor Park [which is on ground one] said no to playing some games on their ground and we understand that.

Thunder off with a bang

Keilor Thunder have made the perfect start under new coach Kristi Harrower in the National Basketball League 1 South women’s competition.

Despite only having a handful of training sessions with Harrower’s new look list, the Thunder have found a way to gel early and currently sit unbeaten after three games.

Picking up where they left off after defeating Frankston 80-76, the Thunder travelled to the Diamond Valley on April 9.

In a convincing performance, the Thunder outscored their opponent by 17 points in the first term and the Eagles were never able to recover.

Even with their new star Maddison Rocci shooting just 22 per cent from the field, The Thunder played out a 72-53 win on the back of a scoring spread where five players finished in double digits.

But perhaps even more impressive was the Thunder’s match on Thursday against Kilsyth. Rocci was not available for the match due to personal reasons, forcing Harrower to dig deeper into the rotation for the answers.

The Thunder outscored the Cobras in every quarter, including a third quarter where they held their opponent to just six points.

Grace Graham proved her worth coming off the bench, as she top scored for the Thunder with 18 points in 25 minutes.

Harrower said she was impressed with the on-court chemistry she’s seen among her players so far.

“It is a great start for us,” she said. “We have great personnel in our group and a lot of experience, but I don’t want my players thinking we can just walk on the floor and expect to win.

“The chemistry is coming together slowly, Izzy[Bourne]andPenina[Davidson]hadnever played together before a couple weeks ago, but they’re already gelling.”

The Thunder are fielding an entirely new starting five from last season, with Harrower able to draw on her extensive experience as a player at the highest level.

Reflecting on the start of the year, she said she was most pleased with the efforts on the defensive end.

“Even when I was a player, the teams I was on where we were winning were all about defence,” she said. “That’s the way I’m trying to coach the team, it’s about wearing teams down over 40 minutes.”

Meanwhile it’s been a less convincing start to the year for the Thunder men’s.

The Liam Glascott coached side was able to turn things around from its first game defeat

when they travelled to Diamond Valley.

They beat the Eagles 110-106 in a see-sawing encounter, with the Eagles dominant 33 point final term not enough to get them across the line.

But the Thunder couldn’t back it up against Kilsyth.

“Sydenham Park has come to the rescue. The support from Sydenham Park president Nick Trajcevski and vice-president David, along with the broader Sydenham Park community, isgreatlyappreciated, andweeagerlyanticipate playing our senior and 20s home games for the 2024 season at Sydenham Park.

“A special acknowledgement to Football Victoria’s Josephine La Pila for her work with both clubs to achieve an outcome that promotes collaboration among football clubs for the betterment of our beloved sport.”

Stella said while relieved to have somewhere to play, she said long term they need a solution so they can play home games at their ground.

She said they won’t be able to make any money on game days, which means the money whichusuallycoversrefereefeesaren’tcoming, which would cost the club $10,000 for the season.

Calder’s next match is on Sunday against the Bentleigh Greens.

Blues want to have fun

Keilor is getting back to what football is about in the Essendon District Football League women’s premier division this season.

The Blues finished fourth last season, thelowesttheirtopsidehaseverfinished, with a bit of a changing of the guard.

While there’s been a few changes in the off season. Blues are still hoping to be in the mix come the pointy end of the season.

For coach Brooke Surgeon, the biggest thing for her this season was about everyone having fun.

“It’s been a really good off season and the group has bonded so well,” she said. “We’re looking froward to a really good season.

“I think we have really clicks these season and we’ll be looking to hit a few different marks.

“We want to be aiming for a flag, but we want to have fun and not forget why we want to play.”

The Blues have lost a few experienced players and Surgeon said it would be an opportunity for others to step up.

She said with a strong under-18 program there was plenty of talent coming through..

“There’s a few who have come up from under-18s and there’s plenty of young talent,” she said.

“They’ll get some more opportunities. There’s some older players that have come along in the pre-season and play in key positions across the board.”

Maddy Reynolds is one of the younger players that Surgeon was keen to see in the senior side, while former Victorian Football League player Simone Craige is another Surgeon is keen to see.

Surgeon and Craige played all their junior football together and Craige comes back to the game after some time away from the game.

The Blues kicked off their season on Saturday against Hillside, after deadline.

With most teams recruiting well in the off season, Surgeon thinks it will be a close season.

After heading in to the quarter time break level, the Cobras pulled away to win 108-81. Jalen Gibbs top scored for the Thunder with 27pointstogowitheightrebounds,fourassists and two steals.

The Thunder men’s and women’s played Geelong on Sunday after deadline.

“Oak Park and Aberfeldie are always going to be top sides,” she said. “We’ll always be in the mix. We want to focus on home ground talent and we’ve put a lotoffocusinourjuniorprogramandit’s looking really good.”

Sharks show nerve to clinch their second win

Hillside is still a work in progress but has put a second win on the board in the Essendon District Football League division 1 competition.

After a good performance on Good Friday, the Sharks had a bigger test on Saturday against Craigieburn which also won on Good Friday.

Hillside started the better of the two teams, leading by 23 points at quarter time.

The middle quarters became a real arm wrestle, with the Eagles reducing the margin to 13 points heading into the final break.

The Sharks managed to reload in the last quarter to do enough to get the win, 11.12 (78)-8.9 (57).

Sharks coach Chris Daley said he would have taken a start to the season when the fixture came out.

He said they had their moments against the Eagles, but it wasn’t a four quarter performance.

“We started reasonably well and we had the game in hand for a while,” he said. “We kicked

five goals to one in the opening quarter.

“Maybe we thought we had it in hand. We kept Craigieburn in the game. We got back to what we did in the first quarter in the last quarter to finish it off.”

Daley said their inside 50s weren’t great in the middle couple of quarters and made it hard for their forwards.

Josh Covelli finished with seven goals as the key target up forward. Daley said the midfielders didn’t help Covelli.

“Josh kicked four goals in the first quarter and three goals in the last quarter,” he said. “He’s a weapon for us and we need to look after him.

“He’s one of the best one-on-one players up forward and we need to understand that and not make him run as much.”

Daley said Hudson Shaw was best on ground, while Lachlan Pettigrove, Zain Yamak and Mitchell Hearne all had good games. Pettigrove didn’t play after half time due to an ankle injury.

Daley said with nearly a third of their side

being new players this season, they would still take some time to settle.

“We finished equal with inside 50s,” he said. “We are nowhere near a finished product.

“We were beaten around the stoppage on the weekend. We need to create some ball in our half, rather than relying on the transition from the back half.

“It will help with getting more one-on-one contests. We’ll take a few games to work out combinations and players strengths.

The Sharks will get an even bigger test this Saturday, facing West Coburg.

The Burgers have played in the last two grand finals and started the season with win against Maribyrnong Park.

“It’s one we’re looking forward to,” Daley said.

In other matches, St Albans beat Rupertswood.

In premier division, Keilor smashed Deer Park, while in division 2, Taylors Lakes and Burnside Heights both had wins in round two.

Learning curve for Roos

Sunshine is preparing for different challenges each week in the Western Football League division 2 competition.

With division 2 and 3 combining this season, the Kangaroos are facing sides that they’ve never played before.

The Kangaroos have had two very different matchups in their first two matches, last season’s division 2 runners-up Albion on Good Friday and division 3 wooden spooners, North Sunshine on Saturday.

Kangaroos coach Ben Chapman said both matches had taught them different things about their game.

“We had chances against Albion but unfortunately weren’t able to win in the end,” he said. “There were a lot of positives out of the game.

“Against North Sunshine we played some good periods, but need to do some work on our goalkicking.”

Chapman said it was hard for the teams that were at the bottom of division 3 last season to play some of the stronger sides from division 2 so early in the season.

He said those sides needed a chance to find their feet and would have been better playing each other first.

On Saturday against the Roadrunners, it was all one way traffic on the scoreboard in the direction of the Kangaroos.

The Kangaroos came away with a 37.31 (253)-0.1 (1). The Kangaroos scored at least eight goals in every quarter.

Nathan Carroll kicked 13 goals in his debut for the Kangaroos, while Daniel Castellano and Hisham Kerbatieh kicked seven goals each.

Jordan Davis and Kahlan Williams were named the Kangaroos best.

Chapman said the Roadrunners effort was great and they didn’t give up.

Chapman said the additions of Carroll and Castellano helped fill a couple of holes they had targeted, including some more targets up forward.

The Kangaroos also signed Cooper McPharlane, but it’s unclear whether he will play this year

“Thatwastheaim,”hesaid.“Wewerealittle bit thin in the front half. Charly Williams, who didn’t play yesterday, had a fantastic ear and needed more support.”

Havingmadefinalsintheirfirstseasonback in division 2 after being relegated, Chapman

said they want to be in the mix come the end of the season.

He said they would only get better as the season goes on after having several players out during the pre-season.

“That’sthefirstgoaltowinenoughgamesto qualify and make finals,” he said. “We want to be a more consistent team and the results will take care of itself.

“Hopefully we’ll see the fruits of that as the season rolls on.”

TheKangaroosfaceanotherformerdivision 3 side this week in Sunshine Heights. It’ll essentially be a third straight Sunshine derby, with Albion’s ground based in Sunshine.

“Hardest thing for us, we don’t know a lot about many of these sides,” Chapman said.

In other matches, Sunshine Heights lost to North Footscray, Braybrook beat Tarneit and Albion smashed Albanvale.

Knights are staying put

The Melbourne Knights won’t be part of the National Second Tier competition in the near future.

Football Australia announced in November the first eight teams of the new competition which is now set to start in 2025, with Avondale FC, South Melbourne and Preston Lions the three Victorian teams included.

While the Knights had been part of the process and many expected them to be part of the new competition, they announced they had not completed the process due to a number of concerns.

The club in a statement last week said that their stance had not changed in the months since.

“Melbourne Knights Football Club can today confirm that it will not be, and has no intention of applying for the recently announced National Second Tier in its current proposed state.

“While being a long time advocate for such a competition, a number of key elements remain to be of concern.

“The club firmly believes it to be in the best interests of the game in Australia that the current proposed competition either be further delayed, or abandoned entirely.

“The club remains an advocate of an NST and welcomes further dialogue with Football Australia.”

On field, the Knights suffered a loss to Heidelberg United on Friday. Neither side could score in the first half, before Heidelberg hit the front in the second.

That one goal would be enough for a 1-0 win.

The Knights have now slipped to eighth spot.

Green Gully also had a tough night on Fridaynight, losingtoSouthMelbourne, 3-0.

St Albans Saints fell short on Saturday night against Altona Magic, losing 1-0.

After parting ways with coach Ryan McGuffie last weekend, the Saints said during the week they wouldn’t rush to appoint a new coach.

Assistant coach Paul Donnelly will lead the side until a decision is made on a new coach.
