Demolition backlash

Wyndham council’s decision to not rebuild the Kelly Park Centre in Werribee, nearly two years after it was destroyed by fire, has been met with fierce community backlash, including from sitting councillors.

The heritage-listed centre, which for decades served as one of Wyndham’s most popular community spaces, was destroyed by fire in June, 2022.

Thedecisiontodemolishratherthanrebuild Kelly Park and turn the site into green space was made at a council meeting in December, 2023, but only made public last week.

Wyndham deputy mayor Josh Gilligan justified the decision, saying the significant out-of-pocket cost required to rebuild the centre meant restoring the land to public open space was the best option.

“This is an exciting opportunity for the Kelly Park precinct and we are looking forward to developing a public open space the whole family can enjoy,” Cr Gilligan said.

But in more than 140 comments left below the announcement on Wyndham council’s Facebook page, almost all disagreed, with the move variously labelled “disgraceful,” “poor,” and “terrible,” and one that disadvantaged its various tenants such as senior citizens, line dancing and probus clubs.

Among those voicing opposition were Wyndham councillors Jasmine Hill, Marcel Mahfoud and Heather Marcus, who pointed out that they either voted against or were absent when the matter came before council. Acommonthemeamongthecommentswas speculation the Kelly Park Centre was under insured when it burnt down, speculation council denied.

“The building was insured, but the cost of rebuilding the centre to current building standards, including the removal of asbestos (that a hazardous materials audit conducted on the site after the fire identified) would not represent value for ratepayers’ money,” a council spokesperson said.

“The hazardous materials audit found that the areas identified were either not exposed by the fire or were contained within the building itself (therefore posing no public danger) but would nonetheless need to be removed by a licenced asbestos removalist whether the facility was rebuilt or demolished.”

Among the relocated groups expecting Kelly Park to be rebuilt was the Wyndham Combined Probus Club.

Club member Sandra Carnovale said she was disappointed to learn Kelly Park was gone for good.

“I was hoping they would [rebuild] mainly because it is so central to the Werribee area,” Ms Carnovale said, adding that Wyndham Probus Club’s temporary home at the Iramoo Community Centre in Wyndham Vale was

much less accessible.

“It’s (Iramoo) miles from my place in Truganina. It’s not easily accessible public transport-wise.

“Our probus club services an aged population and a lot of them don’t drive

anymore and Kelly Park was integral to their sociallifeandhadabusstopatthefrontdoor.”

The council spokesperson acknowledged the disappointment caused by the decision and said council officers were working with affected groups to find alternate venues.

Push for better bus services

Reece Gains has lived in the Harpley estate just outside Werribee for the past five years and loves it.

“I think it’s a really nice area to live,” said the 39-year-old of where he, his wife and their one-month-old child share a home.

There’s just one problem.

“It just feels like transport is the missing link at this point,” said Mr Gains, referring to the lack of public transport in the area. But rather than just complain, Mr Gains is trying to do something about it, starting a change.org petition calling for more bus services in Harpley, Mambourin and Cornerstone estates where currently there are almost none.

“Harpley estate is soon to be home to over 12,000 [residents] and Mambourin estate 3500 residents and Cornerstone estate with no bus services available; some individuals have no choice but to walk over 40 minutes or two kilometres – a distance that is simply inaccessible for many,” said Mr Gains, who is not alone in demanding more bus services for Wyndham and the west.

Last month, Friends of the Earth and the Point Cook Action Group held a public forum on the issue, while in late 2023, a report from Infrastructure Victoria identified improved frequency, rapid transit routes, longer operating hours and lower fares as reforms needed in growth areas like Wyndham.

Mr Gaines wants flexi-buses, which don’t

have a set routes and operate on demand, to service the estates.

“There’s one in Tarneit that runs from the Tarneit train station and there’s one in Melton South at Lendlease’s other big development in the west, Cobblebank. And quite a few in the east,” he said, adding that the demographics of Harpley, Mambourin and Cornerstone estates make the need for more buses services

‘Icon’: Les Twentyman farewelled

Victoria has said its final goodbye to Les Twentyman, a “true son of the west” and a champion for youth across the state.

Family, friends, political leaders and the public gathered at St Patrick’s Cathedral on Tuesday morning to bid a final farewell to Les who died in late March at age 76.

By his own words, Les described himself as a “well-known troublemaker” and “mad stirrer” from the west.

And as his younger brother Garry took to the podium to deliver his tribute, it was clear that Les had always marched to the beat of his own drum.

“It was very handy being brought up in Braybrook [and] having a brother that was three years older than me. Because he could actually tell me all the things that you could actually get away with, and those that wouldn’t work. And it saved me a hell of a lot ofheartache, andwemanagedtogetthrough,”

Garry said.

“Les was one of the first inmates at Braybrook High School back in 1960 … the teachers quite frankly thought they were in control of the school – but I’m quite sure Les was. Les and his cronies basically went to schooltofillintimebetweensocialeventsand sporting events.”

Les’ sister Sandra shared stories of the Twentymanhouseholdwherethefivechildren were raised in Braybrook.

Their parents ran a fruit shop on South Road and Sandra said they did everything they could to put food on the table.

“We found out at a very early age that pride was a useless emotion when you were poor,” she said.

“... Les was put to work on a paper round as soon as his legs were long enough to reach a pedal on his second hand bike created from scraps from the Sunshine tip – my father’s favourite playground.”

Premier Jacinta Allan addressed the service

especially urgent.

“My mother-in-law is here from Vietnam anddoesn’tdriveandtherearealotoffamilies here with family members from overseas who come to look after kids who would really benefit. We’ve also got a lot of people who live here because rent is affordable and who work and study but have to catch Uber which gets quite expensive.”

The petition had amassed nearly 900 signatures at the time of publication, with Mr Gaines hoping to get more than 1000 before presenting it to local politicians such as state treasurer and Werribee MP, Tim Pallas.

A spokesperson for the Department of Transport and Planning said Melbourne’s bus network was currently being reformed and that residents in Wyndham housing estates hadn’t been forgotten.

“We’re continually monitoring and investigating how we can improve our public transport network, right around the state including in new estates in Melbourne’s booming western suburbs,“ the spokesperson said.

Netballers wanted, all abilities

Disabledpeopleoftenfindopportunities to play sport hard to come by, but in Wyndham, young disabled netballers are in demand.

The Wyndham Netball Association has registered a team for the all abilities division of Netball Victoria’s Association Championships on June 16.

With the championships fast approaching, the association is on the lookout for more players to fill their team and participate against the state’s best.

“We are not expecting to set the court on fire with our team, we just want to give these kids every opportunity to participate and have a great time representing their community,” said Wyndham Netball Association president Phil Morely.

“We will be building up the game play over the coming weeks to build the skills and confidence of the team. Now is an ideal time for anyone interested in joining all abilities netball.”

In 2023 Wyndham Netball Association started an all-abilities netballforyouthprogramtohelpfillthe gap for all-abilities sports programs in the community.

as she remembered Les and the lives changed by his work.

“WeallknowLeswasamanwithabigheart and his absence leaves an even bigger hole,” she said.

“... [He was] darkly funny, fiercely honest and always playing down the enormous difference he made.”

Maribyrnong MP and close friend of Les, Bill Shorten, said Les’ life changed the course of many others.

“Les was a true son of the west. Les was a Victorian to his core. I think he was as much a part of this great city as our mighty MCG, and the people whose lives were changed and helped by Les could fill that mighty ground several times over,” he said.

“That’s what mattered to him. Not fame or fortune. Not clenching fists or throwing in the towel. Not bothered about looking good, focussed on doing good.

“... Les became an icon but he was never an ornament.”

The program caters for youth aged eight to 25 with intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, and social disabilities, with Mr Morely noting that the latter had become more common in recent years.

“Social disabilities are an issue that has become more prevalent after covid. Many youth saw their social skills and social confidence impacted by the lockdowns. Being in a group or team setting is a real challenge for some youth and stepping onto the court can be a significant step forward for some. Doing it in a gentler, less competitive environment of an all abilities program can make those steps easier for the participant and the family.”

Those interested are encouraged to contact Phil Morely on 0437 078 739 or come along to the first session for term two on Saturday, April 20 at Eagle Stadium.

Wattle Ave plan goes to VCAT

The future of a proposed bottle shop and fast food development on a key Werribee intersection will be decided at VCAT after Wyndham council again rejected the plans on Wednesday night.

A meeting of council’s planning committee on April 10 voted against the proposal from developer Princes Wattle Pty Ltd, to build a retail precinct containing a Dan Murphy’s bottle shop and Guzman Y Gomez restaurant on the corner Wattle Avenue and Princes Highway.

It’s the second time in two years that the proposal has been rejected by council, with an early submission from Princes Wattle Pty LtdbeingvoteddowninNovember2021amid backlash from nearby residents over noise, traffic and the sale of alcohol.

Princes Wattle re-submitted plans in January, but had already appealed to VCAT arguing the council had failed to determine the application within the prescribed time.

Despite a recommendation that council offer conditional support for the project, an alternative motion moved by councillor Adele Hegedich calling on council to oppose it at VCAT, received majority support, with only deputy mayor Josh Gilligan voting against. Princes Wattle Pty Ltd was contacted for comment.

“The lighting and the noise, just from patrons, will be ridiculous.”

Mental health worker David Turnbull said there were already 20 liquor stores within five kilometres of the site and seven within two kilomteres, which was already too many.

“Ihaveprovidedalotofevidencethatshows that the higher density of liquor retailers the poorer health outcomes for the residents and your ratepayers,” he told councillors.

Wattle Avenue resident Lisa Turbull said traffic was the reason for objection.

“It’s just devastating how the roads are getting spoiled,” said Ms Turnbull who accused council of directing too much traffic towards the area.

Cheryl Haney who lives in nearby Bowery Court said the retail precinct would cause disruption for residents in the area.

“The proposed trading hours I believe are going to impact greatly to the surrounding

Earlier, a number of residents again expressed their opposition to the $8 million, 4591 square metre development proposal which also includes office space and more than 150 parking spaces.

Joanny to bring afro beatz to town

When musicians playing a gig tell their audience they’re about to perform a song from their new album, it often sends punters scurrying to the bar or the toilet.

Fortunately, those attending Australian-Nigerian afro-pop artist Joanny’s show in Wyndham on April 19, won’t have to worry about that.

“On the first of March I lost my laptop,” said the 29-year-old of why his headline set at the Trybe Beatz concert next Friday won’t feature any new material.

“My album was 90 per cent finished but I hadn’t backed it up so I lost it. It wasn’t the best experience,” said Joanny, who is in the process of recording the album again, but that it was now “a totally new project.”

Luckily the Perth-based artist has two EP’s and bunch of singles to fall back for his show at Wyndham City Youth Services in Hoppers Crossing.

Joanny tops a hip-hop, R’n’B and afrobeat heavy bill that features likes of Chief Tebir, Nomad and Lowty at the concert which is for young people aged 12 to 25. The show will be a homecoming of sorts for Joanny who spent time living in Wyndham soon after arriving in Australian when he was 19.

“I used to be a resident of Wyndham, between 2017 and 2020 I was a resident of Truganina,” he said.

“It was a beautiful area, a beautiful suburb, but I had to move back to my family in Mickleham, and now I’m based in Perth.”

Joanny’s day job in Perth is as a youth worker, making his presence at a show presented by Wyndham Youth Services all the more appropriate.

Describing his music as afro-pop, Joanny said he hoped his show resonates with young people in attendance.

“I think they should expect authentic African music, good music from an African born Australian and to connect with me. I

love to connect with people.”

THE GLOBAL FITNESS RACE FOR EVERYBODY

“It’s almost as though you’re trying to move the center of the city up to the end of our street by the way you’re bringing all the traffic together and closing roads off so that the traffic all has to try and get down our little road. It just doesn’t make sense.”

The VCAT hearing is scheduled to take place in June.

Trapping of cats resumes

The return of cat vaccines to Victoria has resulted in the resumption of cat trapping services in Wyndham.

Wyndham council paused cat trapping services last November following a nationwide cat vaccine shortage. The service was paused to reduce the number of cats taken to the council-owned pound and the service provider, The Lost Dogs Home, so as to avoid having unvaccinated animals in shared spaces being exposed to and spreading disease.

But while cat vaccines supplies have returned to normal, Wyndham mayor Jennie Barrera still urged pet owners to do all they can to keep their cats from ending up in the pound.

“We continue to encourage residents to consider and explore alternative options before surrendering healthy cats,” she said.

“This may include speaking to your local veterinary practice regarding veterinary costs, seeking support from friends or family members, or contacting welfare agencies if you are strugglingtomeetthecostsofpetfood.”

For those residents with no other option but to surrender their cats, Cr Barrera said there were a number of steps they needed to take first.

Playground mulch asbestos free

Wyndham council has moved to assure residentsthatitsplaygroundsandpublicspaces are free of asbestos, after more contaminated sites were found in neighbouring Hobsons Bay. The Environment Protection Authority has confirmed asbestos has been found at six sites in Hobsons Bay. Altona Coastal Park, PA Burns Reserve in Altona, GJ Hosken Reserve in Altona North, Crofts Reserve in Altona North, PJ Lynch Reserve in Altona North and Donald McLean Reserve, Spotswood have all been confirmed as having material containing asbestos. Samples have been

taken from eight more sites, Truganina Park in Altona Meadows, Doug Grant Reserve in Altona, Laverton Creek at the rear of AB Shaw Reserve in Altona Meadows, Newport Lakes Reserve in Newport, Grieve Parade in Altona, Cherry Lake Buffer Mound and Wetland in Altona, Kororoit Creek Reserve in Altona North and Federation Trail in Brooklyn are all awaiting test results.

Ineachcasetheasbestoscontainingmaterial has been found in mulch spread across playgrounds and garden beds at the reserves.

Wyndham council said there had been no such findings at its reserves.

“Wyndham City has had no known

Helping others is Akriti’s reward

Akriti Jain has only lived in Wyndham for two years and in Australia for six, but the 24-year-old has clearly made an impression.

The Williams Landing resident, who moved from her native India to study finance and economics when she was 18, has been named Wyndham’s Young Person of the Month for April.

The reason for Ms Jain’s win is related to her field of study, as the former finance student is now a financial consultant with accounting giant Deloitte, through which she volunteers her time to help the less fortunate.

“Within Deloitte there’s a Deloitte Foundation which does a lot of social work so

I get the opportunity to connect with different organisations such as the Smith Family where I volunteer as a mentor for high school students.”

Alongside with finance and economics, helpingothersisalifelongpassionforMsJain, something she said was fostered growing up in the northern Indian state of Rajasthan.

“Coming from India, I’ve seen a lot of underprivileged people and having that awareness that even giving a little of your time can make a huge difference in someone’s life.”

It’s unsurprising then that Ms Jain’s volunteering efforts extend beyond those

connected to her employer.

“At the moment there’s this friend of mine running hiking groups for refugee and migrantwomenandIhelpwiththat,”shesaid.

“It’s just for two hours but the women really appreciate being outside and getting out of the house.”

Ms Jain lives in Williams Landing with her sister, but their parents remain in Rajasthan, where news of their daughter’s award was welcomed.

“They were very happy and glad the social work I do has been recognised,” Ms Jain said.

Under existing remedial notices Hobsons Bay council is required to report to EPA on the sources of mulch received over the past 18 months. Adventurer takes off

Adventurer Michael Smith has set off to recreate the first circumnavigation of Australia by seaplane on the day two air force pilots did it 100 years earlier.

Mr Smith took off from the Royal Australian Air Force base at Point Cook on Friday April 12, in his twin engine ChaikaLLCL65Seabear,andisfollowing the same anti-clockwise route taken by former acting chief of the air staff, Wing Commander SJ (‘Jimmy’) Goble, and pilot, Flying Officer Ivor McIntyre, a century earlier.

The journey around the continent is expected to take 44 days, though depending on weather conditions, Mr Smith and his seaplane, Southern Sun, could complete it in a third of the time.

Mr Smith is hoping the weather conditions will be more favourable than those encountered by the initial pioneers who faced strong winds, heavy rain, and terrible turbulence that caused damage totheiraircraft.GobleandMcIntyrealso battled fatigue, poor maps and compass failure, but were rewarded on their return by being appointed Commanders of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).

Mr Smith, who owns Yarraville’s Sun Theatre, was named the Australian Geographic Adventurer of the Year in 2016 after becoming the first person to solo circumnavigate the globe in a single-engine seaplane.

Refugee kids flourish thanks to targeted health diagnoses

Imam Hossain spent years in hiding as a political activist in Bangladesh but one of his biggest worries nowadays is affording medication for his son Ibrar’s ADHD condition.

Mr Hossain sought asylum in Australia in 2019 with his young family, and for eight-year-old Ibrar it has been a tough adjustment period.

“I was a little worried about him because he was hyperactive and I was confused,“ Mr Hossain told AAP.

“He’s feeling lonely because he says ’the other kids don’t play with me’. He’s trying to cope with this community and society.

“He’s doing better but it takes a bit of time.“

An Australian Institute of Health and WelfarereportinNovemberfoundthatabout nine in 10 refugees had a GP consultation in 2021, with almost all the sessions bulk-billed. A dedicated refugee children’s wellbeing program run at Melbourne’s Utopia Refugee and Asylum Seeker Health clinic in partnership with the Werribee Mercy Hospital has seen nearly 185 children in 2024 alone.

“Young people from refugee backgrounds don’t understand that when they see the doctor they can come without their parents,“ said Utopia clinic’s founder Dr Lester

Mascarenhas.

“They don’t understand that when they see the doctor it is confidential ... because they come from a culture and even from a medical system where things are very different.“

Consults at the clinic range from 20-40 minutes, about double the mainstream average, to allow for interpreters from various refugee communities to be present.

The program has been running for about four years with the Mercy Hospital’s Dr Dan Mason visiting the clinic regularly.

Remember the fallen

As is now tradition, this year’s Anzac Day commemorations in Wyndham will again begin a few days prior to April 25.

The pre-Anzac Day March down Watton Street, Werribee, will kick-off remembrance services and activities across the municipality on Sunday, April 21.

Led by the Watsonia pipe and drums band and featuring 60 cadets from nearby schools as well as dignitaries and veterans, the march will begin at the Wyndham Cultural Centre and finish at the Werribee War Memorial in Station Place.

Those participating in the march are asked to assemble at the cultural centre at 2pm, with form-up at 2.20pm and step off at 2.30pm.

The march is expected to arrive at the cenotaph by 2.45pm, and once the service is complete, will then proceed to the Werribee RSL for refreshments.

Two days later on Anzac Day itself, Station Place will again play host to the dawn service, Wyndham’s largest Anzac remembrance ceremony which last year attracted more than 8000 people.

The 2024 dawn service begins at 6.30am and afterwards, a gunfire breakfast will be offered at Werribee RSL with entry requiring a gold coin donation.

All proceeds will go towards assisting veterans.

Most veterans are then expected to head into the city for the Melbourne Anzac Day march before returning back to the Werribee RSL for games of two-up in the afternoon.

Wyndham’s other large dawn service will be held at Saltwater Reserve in Point Cook.

Hosted by the Point Cook Football Club, with assistance from the Point Cook cricket and basketball clubs, the dawn service will

commence at 5.45am and be followed by a barbecue breakfast and raffle.

Point Cook Football Club president Ivo Havard said the dawn service at Saltwater Reserve began when the nearby Royal Australian Air Force base stopped holding one and has grown in popularity each year.

“We got up to about 800 people least year and I’m hoping we can bust through a 1000 this year,” he said.

Western Football League clubs Hoppers Crossing and Werribee Districts will again meet in a Anzac Day clash at Hogans Road Reserve.

A prime location for your ‘style of life’.

Police plead for road basics

Thousands of motorists, including those in Wyndham, are failing to heed the very basics of driving.

New Victoria Police analysis shows more than 24,000 infringements were issued in a single year for some of the simplest of road rules.

The analysis – covering the latest financial year – shows almost 8000 infringementswereissuedformotorists failing to obey traffic lights alone.

This includes running red lights, ignoring amber lights and disobeying traffic lane signals.

A further 3000 drivers failed to obey stop signs.

There were 2000 infringements for failing to give way at intersections and 1300 for ignoring give way signs.

Roundabouts appeared a mystery to many who entered them from the wrong lane, ignored traffic arrows and didn’t give way when they were supposed to.

Around 2200 drivers were caught tailgating and 1700 didn’t have their headlights and taillights on at night.

More than 800 motorists failed to use their indicator while others entered a blocked intersection, overtook on the left or at an unsafe distance and ignored keep left or keep right signs.

Police said 4300 fines were issued for people not wearing a seatbelt or not wearing one properly.

Rail loop in Opposition’s sights

The state opposition is targeting the suburban rail loop (SLR) in its pitch to voters in Wyndham, arguing the multi-billion dollar rail tunnel in the eastern suburbs is another example of the government neglecting the west.

Opposition leader Pesutto and his shadow cabinet held a meeting in Werribee on Monday, followed by lunch with business, community and council representatives.

It was the Liberal leader’s second visit to Wyndham in a week, after meeting businesses and sporting clubs and holding a street walk in Werribee on Thursday.

Speaking after the shadow cabinet meeting attheWyndhamParkCommunityCentre,Mr Pesutto said the government was too focused on what he called “pet political projects“ like the SLR, at the expense of growth corridors like Wyndham.

“Premier Jacinta Allan wants to put all our eggs in one basket – the suburban rail loop – which will mean that areas like Werribee simply miss out,” he said.

“They won’t get the roads, the public transport, the schools, the hospital infrastructure that they desperately need. Growth in areas like Werribee far exceeds the growth that you will see inner suburban areas of Melbourne, so the Labor government has taken its eye off the ball.”

The opposition is hoping the suburban rail loop will do for it in the west, what it has done for the government in the east, where the promise to build the orbital rail tunnel has helped it win a number of seats off of the coalition at the last two state elections.

But with the western sections of the SLR not budgeted for and considered decades away, the opposition see it as an opportunity

to highlight what it considers to be Labor’s neglect of its western suburbs heartland, especially at a time of rapid population growth.

However, despite these growing pains, Melbourne’s outer west and north remain tough for the Liberal Party, where they hold no lower house seats, either state or federal. State treasurer and Werribee MP, Tim Pallas, is determined to keep it that way.

“The only time the Liberals pay attention to Melbourne’s western suburbs is when they’re cutting funding, closing schools and hospitals and going to war with workers,” said Mr Pallas, dismissing the opposition’s push into the area.

“It’s only a Labor Government that will deliver for our western suburbs - making record investments in the hospitals, schools, road and rail Victorians deserve.”

With the next state election just under three years away, John Pesutto is working hard to convince voters in Wyndham and the west otherwise.

“I want to give the people of western metropolitan region ... better than what they’ve been getting from Labor,” he said.

“Labor has taken areas like Werribee for granted for decades, and we’re seeing the result of that.”

Helmet exemption bid

Tarneit residents awoke to the roar of Harley Davidson’s on Sunday morning as a bike gang took off on a ride across the city.

The Azad Sikh Social Motorcycle Club (SMC) made up of Sikh motorbike riders were taking part in their annual Vaisakhi motorcycle ride on Sunday, April 14, cruising all the way from Tarneit to Keysborough in Melbourne’s south-east.

The ride is part of the Vaisakhi festival, one of the most important events on the Sikh calendar, that commemorates the foundation of the “Khalsa Panth” of warriors under Guru Gobind Singh in 1699.

Starting from the Gurdwara Sahib (Sikh place of worship) in Tarneit and concluding

at the Sikh Gurdwara in Keysborough, a spokesperson for the Azad Sikh SMC said riders made quite the impression as they journeyed through Melbourne.

“Under a brilliant autumn sky, riders adorned in traditional and colourful turbans, together with their gleaming motorcycles, made for an arresting sight as they coursed through the city’s streets,” the spokesperson said.

With motorcyclists having to wear helmets, those colourful turbans were adorned on the bikes themselves rather than on the riders’ heads, something the club is campaigning to change through events like the Vaisakhi ride.

The Azad Sikh SMC is one of a number of Sikhmotorcycleclubsacrossthecountrywho

are pushing for an exemption from helmet laws so they can wear turbans instead.

“Caps aren’t allowed in Sikh religion and helmets fall under that category,” said the club spokesperson.

“Many Sikhs aren’t buying motorcycles because of this.”

While helmet exemptions exist for Sikh motorcyclists in the UK, New Zealand and some US and Canadian states, there are none in Australia, though some exist for cyclists,

The Azad Sikh SMC spokesperson said the need for an exemption wasn’t just about helmets.

“It is about upholding the values of unity, respect, and safety, while ensuring that everyone can express their religious beliefs freely,” the spokesperson said.

Youth survey now underway

Young Victorians aged 15-19 are encouraged to have their say in Mission Australia’sthe23rdannualyouthsurvey. The Youth Survey is an opportunity for young people to share what they view as the key issues impacting the country and highlight their own personal challenges.

Mission Australia’s Nada Nasser said the survey provides a rare insight into the challenges facing young people.

“AtMissionAustralia, weworkhardto support young people through what can be a tough time in their lives,” she said.

“We know young people thrive when they have a stable and safe environment inwhichtheycanbethemselves, andour programs aim to be a welcoming space for all,” Ms Nasser added.

Results of the survey will be published in November and are shared with government and non-government organisations, schools and the public.

The survey focuses on a wide range of topics, including questions on mental health and wellbeing, sources of support and community connections, housing and financial situation, climate change, and personal concerns such as body image, bullying, discrimination and stress. Young people are also asked to provide solutions to the personal issues they face. Additional focus areas for 2024 are social media use, loneliness and opinions relating to alcohol and drugs.

Youth Survey 2024 is open from April to August and takes 20 minutes to complete.

Changing the world

Many people aspire to change the world, but Werribee mum Rebecca Challoner is on the verge of officially being recognised for doing so.

The founder of neurodivergent support service My Spirited Child and facilitator of ADHD conferences across Australia, Ms Challoner has been named as a finalist in the Women Changing the World Awards.

Star Weekly seeks an enthusiastic Full or Part Time sales executive to work across our print, digital, social and online platforms.

Star Weekly is an independently owned company which prides itself on its long history of community experience but also its investment in the future.

The successful applicant will need to possess good people skills to enable them to meet with local businesses to sell solutions through our advertising platforms to help promote their business.

The winner will be announced by the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, at a ceremony in London on May 25.

Ms Challoner, who is preparing for the 5th annual Victorian ADHD Conference on April 20, expressed amazement at being in the running.

“Some of the other finalists are from all over the world and are phenomenal so to be in amongst those people is shocking,” she said.

Even being nominated took Ms Challoner by surprise, with the identity of who put her name forward still a mystery.

“I have absolutely no idea,” she said.

“I’ve asked everybody I know, so my assumption is that it’s just someone who follows the work I do.”

Applicants will need their own reliable vehicle for which we will provide an allowance.

The position is salaried, plus we offer an open ended commission scheme.

Send your application letter and resume to: Advertising Sales Manager, Mandy Clark mandy.clark@starnewsgroup.com.au

That work revolves around supporting neurodivergent parents and families, something Ms Challoner knows all about, with she, her husband and two teenage sons all diagnosed with ADHD.

“I run conferences all over the country and in NZ as well. I also have two allied health multidisciplinary centres, one in Wyndham Vale and one in Cranbourne.”

Ms Challoner doesn’t give herself much chanceofwinning, butsaidevenbeingafinalist demonstrated how far the understanding of ADHD and other neurodiverse conditions had come.

“I’ve been working in this space for the past decade and it’s only now that I’m starting to see a difference in the access people have to awarenessandunderstandingandcommunity

Circumcision offered at Westgate Medical Centre

Westgate Medical Centre on Sayers Road, one of the few established local health providers in the Wyndham community located in Hoppers Crossing with neighbouring growing suburbs such as Tarneit and Truganina, can be trusted to service your healthcare needs.

The clinic recently introduced male circumcision to its services, in addition to the currentmedicalservicessuchasvaccinations, chronic disease management, wound management, skin procedures, children’s health, men’s health, women’s health, and procedures such as Implanon and IUD. Male circumcisions are performed by Dr Sawe Zin who is well-experienced in this field.

After identifying a gap in the local community for circumcision, Dr Sawe Zin decided to onboard male circumcisions to the clinic as there are a limited number of local health providers who perform this procedure and, in some cases, patients may need to travel far to have this performed.

Male circumcisions can be a confronting issue for some; however, some families choose circumcision for cultural and religious reasons while others choose to do it for hygiene, medical and appearance reasons.

The procedure is performed in the clinic with the highest care and consideration even though this can be a daunting experience for somepatients, especiallyyoungmalechildren. Staff are trained to facilitate a positive and streamlined experience for patients. Since

advertising that male circumcisions are now being performed at Westgate Medical Centre in March 2024, the reception from patients has been positive. Mothers have expressed their gratitude that they are glad their local GP offers this service.

Dr Sawe Zin uses quality equipment for this procedure and explains in depth what the procedure will entail, what the possible side effects are and cost. Patient education is important in general, as this gives patients a better insight into their health, provides confidence and allows the patient to participate in the shared decision-making process of their treatment.

In addition to male circumcisions, Dr Sawe Zin also has a keen interest in general practice, women’s health and procedures including Implanon and Mirena/IUD, minor cosmetic procedures such as anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers and joint injections.

The clinic’s operating hours are from 8am –11pm on Monday – Friday, 9am -8pm Saturday and Sunday including public holidays.

Get in quick for Audi RS Q3

Oneofthemostpopularpastimesintheworld, Monopoly, and the Audi RS Q3 sports utility vehicle have much in common.

The board game deals with high finance and real estate, the SUV high performance motoring; both rely heavily on figures.

Thelatterhasjustaddedalotmoreofthelatter to the list with its RS Q3 Sportback Edition 10 Years, as the suffix suggests with reference to its decade of success. Audi is making only 555 specials in celebration, with a ‘healthy number’ slated for Down Under.

“This edition pays great tribute to the best of SUV performance in the RS Q3 Sportback,” saysAudiAustraliadirectorJeffManning, who has no doubts about the sales success of the anniversary edition in this country.

“Australia as a market is so performance focused and I have no doubt that owners will enjoy exclusive RS touches in this special model,” he adds.

The RS Q3 Sportback 10 Years is based on the storied RS Q3 with a raft of unique features inside and out, not least the award winning 2.5 TFSI turbocharged five-cylinder motor, producing an unrivalled bass note.

Inkeepingwiththisisanexclusivecollection of accoutrements such as black 21-inch alloy wheels, matching Audi badging and brake callipers, plus race-inspired front bucket seats with contrasting copper honeycomb stitching.

TheRSQ3SportbackEdition10Yearscomes with Audi’s five-year unlimited kilometre warranty, plus 12-year manufacturer warranty for bodywork against corrosion. Owners also receive membership during the warranty period to the Audi Experience with access to exclusive events, Ambassador experiences and premium partner offers.

Styling Stand-out exclusive colours are Dew Silver matt or metallic Chronos Grey, the latter providing a strong base for darkened matrix LED headlamps, with dynamic turn indicators and matching wing mirror housings. A glossy black roof frame, window rims, and doortrimpointthewaytocopycatfrontspoiler blades and diffuser insert. The Audi four rings

Interior Race-style front bucket seats have a lot going for them – big bolsters for snug lateral support (handy on dramatic direction changes) and covered in leather and Dinamica, black with contrasting copper coloured honeycomb stitching and backrest in matt carbon.

Here’s the bad news: while both seats are heated, theyarereducedtomanualadjustment; nopowerhere.Thisisnotwhatwehavebecome used to in a $100,000 car.

Never mind, the RS sport steering wheel makesupfortheabsence, beingclothedinsexy suede-style Alcantara with copper stitching, which is repeated in the gear lever gaiter. Ambient LED lighting adds the finishing touches to the luxe surroundings.

TheRSQ3EditionTenYearsleavesitsunique signature with illuminated door sill trims and a red 3-D diamond projected onto the ground when the door is opened.

Saying the car is a five-seater is stretching things; the rear is short on width. The boot will take 530 litres of cargo with the 60:40 rear seat backs up, expanding to 1400 litres with them folded. An electric tailgate includes gesture control.

Infotainment

The set-up features MMI navigation through a 10.1-inch touch screen, Audi Connect Plus, Audi phone box light and wireless smartphone charging.

There are two USB-C power outlets up front, along with a 12V plug down by twin cup holders.

Audi virtual cockpit plus with a 12.3-inch display can be configured to present the driver with several layers of easily accessible information to maximise the driving experience, or not.

Engines/transmissions

The award winning TFSI five-cylinder engine pumps out 294 kW of power, 17 per cent more than the previous RS Q3 motor. Maximum torque of 480 Nm, on tap between 1950 and 5850 rpm runs the quattro permanent all-wheel drive via a seven-speed S tronic dual clutch transmission.

Safety

ANCAP safety is not rated, as is the case with many sports specials. However, there is no skimping on active safety, with adaptive cruise assist with Stop&Go function, Audi pre-sense front with autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and lane keeping assist.

The 360-degree cameras, plus rear and front parking alarms instil confidence when faced with crowded car parks.

Driving

AndsototheAudiRSQ3SportbackEdition10 Years figures. The Car can hit 100km/h from standstill in 4.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 250km/h. Audi claims fuel consumption of 8.9 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban/highway cycle.

Thetestcarrecordedjustover10litresper100 kilometres in city stop/start motoring and 6.4 litresper100kilometresonamainlymotorway run. That apart, it’s the accompanying exhaust note that really takes the cake.

The odd number of cylinders with their unique firing order of 1-2-4-5-3 deliver a deep sonorous sound via twin barrels with exhaust flap control and gloss black oval tailpipe trims. The RS sport suspension with adaptive dampers has the car on best behaviour around city streets but still gets a grip when things are set loose on fast bends or sharp corners.

Bits to play with include driving modes, powertrain monitoring and performance tracking.

Positive steering is backed up by Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system, while braking has the heft to pull up the vehicle with the assurance the driver demands of a high-performance sports car.

Summary

TheanniversaryRSQ3isavailableinSportback only, the SUV not given a guernsey, which is how it should be. Buyers will have to be quick to join the celebrations.

Falcons find a game winning mix

The City West Falcons came out on top at home against Geelong Cougars in front of a big crowd in the Victorian Netball League championship.

In one of their home matches at Altona Sports Centre, the Falcons slowly built into the match before coming away with a 62-47 win on Wednesday night.

Falcons coach Marg Lind said it wasn’t their best performance but they were able to come away with the points.

“It took a while to get there,” she said. “They are a good outfit and they have a rotating circle and are hard to defence.”

Lind said they didn’t make the most of their opportunities with the ball and had several turnovers that they normally wouldn’t have.

She said they tried to find the right combinations again and it took some time.

“We’re still trying to find the right mix,” she said. “It was a bit better with using Genevieve [Ogier] off the bench and giving Uneeq [Palavi] a bit of a break

“We didn’t help Jane at all and we put her under a lot of pressure and we were running an extra ball to get her at a better angle.”

With the connection to Cook not working, Shimona Jok had her best game for the Falcons.

She shot 37 goals in 41 minutes on court, not missing a shot.

Lind said with Jok having a bit more agility than Cook it seemed to work better.

It’s been a big week for Jok, who was on Thursday officially named as the Melbourne Mavericks 11th player for the Suncorp Super Netball season. She could get called up any time during the season to be part of the Mavericks match day squad.

Lind said it was something that Jok had been aiming for.

Overall, Lind said it was a team effort on Wednesday night with no standouts.

“We had to grind it out a bit,” she said. “ We were our own worst enemy at times though.”

After six rounds, the Falcons sit in third sport, with four wins and a loss.

The Falcons under-23 side also had a good win, beating the Cougars, 53-42.

“They played really well,” Lind said. “It was an interesting game with both sides having three players at nationals.

“Our development girls int he under-19s having been playing in the super series and they were ready to go .

“All three come in and got a run, which is good for our pathway,”

The Falcons this week face the Peninsula Waves on Wednesday night.

The Waves championship side is the only one in championship division without a win.

“They are still shooting about 50 goals a game,” she said.

“It’s a good opportunity to run a different line and run some players that we need to get time into.

Falcons are ready to fly after a solid pre-season

Wyndhamvale will be aiming to go one better this year under new coach Jay Dolliver in the Western Football League women’s competition.

Dolliver, wholastyearservedasanassistant coach, was called upon to replace Craig Prior when it was announced Prior would be stepping away from the role.

He now takes responsibility for a side that came within a whisker of winning a division 2 premiership.

The Falcons finished on top of the ladder last season with a commanding 14 wins and two losses, but were ultimately overrun by West Footscray in the final game of the year.

Despite a last quarter fight from the Falcons, losing 6.7 (43)-6.5 (41).

Followingtheconclusionoftheseasonitwas decided the divisions would be combined, due to there being fewer clubs in total.

Dolliversaidhethinkshissidewillbeableto compete well in the new competition.

“Ideally we would have preferred for it to be two divisions, but I think it’ll be a reasonably even comp,” he said.

“Pre-season’s been good… since February I’ve done the majority of the sessions and we’ve started to get good numbers for training.

“Numbers are great, we have 21 or 22 on the track.”

TheFalconsstartedtheirseasononSaturday, with a big win against Laverton.

Afteranevenfirstquarter, theFalconskicked away and went on to win, 11.15 (81)-1.0 (6).

Rachael Burton kicked four goals and Madeleine Yung kicked three.

Dolliver said the club had welcomed more than seven new players to the list this year.

They will however be without their major forward option Kelle McIntosh for the first three rounds due to suspension.

McIntosh led the league in goal scoring last season, finishing with 52 goals in 10 matches, including four in the grand final.

“We’re definitely looking forward to having her back out there, she’s important to us,” Dolliver said.

Chloe Muus will also return to the team after winning the club best and fairest last year.

Muus also took out the club and league best and fairest awards in 2021.

The team will be led by Mariah Burton as captain.

Doliver said Burton sets an excellent example for the group.

“She was one of co-captains last year and won the league best and fairest two years ago,” he said.

“She’s an exceptional leader and well respected,” he said.

“She’s a really good leader of people and a good footballer in her own right as well.”

In other matches, the Suns made a winning debut beating Parkside Spurs, while Werribee Centrals beat Caroline Springs.

Bulldogs do enough

Point Cook will take home the points and move on following the opening round of the Western Football League division 1 season. Facing Parkside for the first time, the Bulldogs managed to do just enough to come away with the points, 7.18 (58)-5.10 (40).

Bulldogs coach Clay Smith said it’s not a match that people would go back and watch.

“It was really scrappy,” he said. “It’s always good to be able to win ugly.

“We’ve never played them before and they were good. It’s nice to see them come up and be competitive in division 1.

“We kept them in the game longer than we should have, but that is football.”

Smith said the most disappointing things for them during the game were things that they could easily fix.

“The way we kicked in front of goal was poor,” he said. “We had seven set shots fall short on the line and there were another six or seven easy ones we missed.

“We gave up three goals from 50 metre penalties which put them on the goal line.

“We still came away with the win, which is what we want.”

He said their skills improved later towards the end of the game which was probably the difference in the end.

Jock Coates kicked three goals for the Bulldogs in his debut for the club, having come from Gippsland.

Smith said one of the older boys in Shaun Wyatt was really good and his composure was really crucial.

He said with such a young side they know they will have periods of inconsistency in games like they did on Saturday.

In Saturday’s team, there were 14 players who were under 21.

“The longer we stay together the better they will be,” Smith said. “There will be that little bit of inconsistency.”

Smith said they still have plenty of time in the club with six or seven players who have been senior players in the reserves.

Alana Cerne has become the first player to sign on for Western United’s A-League Women’s 2024-25 season. The 21-year-old was United’s inaugural signing and now becomes the first player to put pen to paper for season three. Cerne has relished the opportunity to shine in the West and will strive to help Western United build further into the future. “I was lucky enough to be given the first contract for Western and start building with the Club. Hopefully next season it’ll be more of an opportunity for me to be a leader.

Hoppers Crossing remains without a win in the FV state league 2 north-west competition, The Reds faced Westvale on Saturday and suffered a big loss, losing 5-1.

The win is the start of the Bulldogs aim to go one better than last season, when they made the grand final in the first time they’ve played finals.

“We want to put ourselves in a position to challenge again,” Smith said.

The Bulldogs face Altona, which they beat in the preliminary final last year. The Vikings had the bye in round one.

In other round one matches, Werribee Districts started its title defence with a hard fought win against Point Cook Centrals.

Bailey Siwek was the Tigers best, with Joshua Grech the Sharks best.

Werribee archers’ successful trip to Canberra

Three Werribee archers came back with some extra luggage from the Youth National Championships Archery, after a successful event.

More than 130 of the best archers from across the country headed to Canberra for the event.

Werribee’s Lily and Sophie Helleren, and Peyton Jarosz were part of the Victorian team.

Lily won gold in the under-14 female compound for field, silver in the indoor and bronze medal in the 720 and finished fourth for the 900 round.

Sophie won silver in the under-16 female compound bow type for field and had two fourth places and one fifth place.

Peyton won silver in the under-16 Olympic recurve bow type for field and a bronze medal for the 720 rounds under-16, Olympic recurve

bow type.

Sophie said the nationals were a great experience were she could meet new people. She started archery after going to birthday parties and enjoying it.

“I have been shooting for two years at Werribee Archery Club,” she said. “For me I thought that I did great. I came away with a sliver which was amazing.

“My expectations going in was to come away with a great experience and to have fun.

Lily said she had a lot of fun at the six day event. She said she was really happy with how she went.

“I was so excited to be able to shoot and compete for Victoria alongside people from other states and territories,” she said.

“Going into this I expected to get at least onemedalandtoshootwellforourstateteam.

“I have been shooting for two years now but only started to do competitions last year I have held state and national records over the last 12 months.

Peyton said while she didn’t shoot her best,

Season over for United

Western United’s elimination final with the Newcastle Jets on Saturday night in the A-League Women’s competition had everything but the result United was after. Hosting its first final at Tarneit, United was hoping to knock the Jets off for the first time this season and continue deeper into finals.

The Jets opened the scoring in the 11th minute before Alana Cerne levelled the scores for United.

The Jets again hit the lead just after half time, before the lights went out, with a more than 20 minute delay ensuing.

Catherine Zimmerman soon levelled the scores for the home team again.

Scores finished locked at 2-2 at the end of regular time, sending the match into extra time.

Melina Ayres gave the Jets the lead again in the 101st minute, before Sophie Hoban sealed the win for the Jets in the 113th with her side’s fourth goal.

That would be the final score with the Jets winning, 4-2.

United coach Kat Smith said she was proud

of how the group had been able to keep their composurethrougheverythingthatoccurred.

“How about the drama?” she said. “Wasn’t expecting lights out, maybe use it as a metaphor and knocking a team out of the finals.

“It actually happened, given all of those different circumstances that happened within the game.

“Thelightsgoingout, agoaldisallowedafter we’d celebrated and then returned for the kick off.

“A few of those things could really throw a team but the girls remain focused when you know they came over and came up to those hurdles they overcame them.

“I certainly thought that we had enough chances to win the game.”

Smith gave credit to the Jets for the win and their season that they’d had.

Smith said it was disappointing the disallowed goal and such a delay in making that call was unfortunate and said she wanted to understand the process a bit better.

Smith said she didn’t think that they had

she shot fairly well.

“I was very happy to be walking home with medals because it was tough competition and mentally, I was struggling so it was a big achievement for me to walk away with medals,” she said.

“My expectations heading into the event were placing a couple of times, getting a PB and catching up with all my other friends from all over Australia.”

Peyton has been doing the sport since 2021 and has been competing since then winning both state and national titles and was last year selected to be part of the national pathways squad.

Mixed results for Wyndham

Wyndham’smen’ssidemadeittwofrom two to start the Big V championship season, while the women’s side went down in a thriller.

Wyndham hosted Melbourne University on Saturday night and had to dig deep to come away with the win.

Wyndham started the better of the two teams and led by nine points at quarter time.

The margin was decreased to just one point at half time.

Melbourne University kept the pressure on and levelled the scores heading into the final break.

Wyndham stepped up a level in the last quarter to run away with a 96-86 win.

Myles Thomas scored 30 points for Wyndham, including six from 10 from beyond the three point arc. He also had 12 rebounds.

Aaron Dolny provided a spark off the bench with 27 points, while Troyce Manassa filled the stats sheet with 14 points, 11 rebounds, 13 assists and five steals.

The women’s side lost its first regular season match since 2022, losing to the Warrnambool Mermaids on Saturday night.

On the road, Wyndham led by one point at the first break, before trailing by four points at the main break.

run out of legs in extra time.

“We had 15 minutes left to play and we wanted to give everything in terms of giving us an opportunity to go all the way in and win the match,” she said.

“We have had significant injuries but that’s not an excuse. We have a squad for the whole year that we look to prepare and you know, makesurethey’reaspreparedastheycanbeto step up and fill a shirt when their time comes.

“Significant amount of experience not available is a challenge. But you know that’s not a reason why you win or lose.

“We take a lot of learnings away from that and the players have had an opportunity because of those circumstances they’ll be better for it and then as a club will be better for it going forward.”

Smith, who re-signed during the week said they had been really clear on what they need to be successful and there’s a core group that they want to retain.

“The direction of the club is very strong and clear on what they want. We’ve got the opportunity to grow on what we have so far.”

The margin was reduced to three points heading into the fourth quarter.

The two teams traded the lead in the final quarter, with a Dakota Crichton put the Mermaids back in front with six seconds to go and it would be enough to win 75-74.

Wyndham captain Amanda Paschal top scored with 28 points, while Julie Brosseau and Jamilee Pearce had 18 points each.

Werribee does enough for a win

Werribeecontinueditswinningstreakdespite not playing its best football against Richmond in the Victorian Football League on Saturday. Both teams entered the match undefeated and it was Werribee that got the job done at Avalon Airport Oval, winning 11.7 (73)-7.10 (52).

Werribee started the better of the two sides and led by 22 points at quarter time. It was a margin it would be able to get throughout most of the match and it proved to be the difference in the end.

Werribee coach Jimmy Allan said they managed to do just enough to get the win. “We played well in patches,” he said. “There’s still a lot of improvement to come for us.

“We got off to a great start, then Richmond gotintoitandmadeithardtokeeppossession inside our 50.

“We also didn’t make great decisions inside 50 and we need to work on that. We controlled the stoppage work and that was able to hold us in good stead.”

Disposal into the 50 has been a concern at times the last couple of seasons even before Allan joined the club. He said it was the hardest kick in football to get right.

“The opposition was able to get numbers back,” he said. ‘We didn’t help our forwards by bombing it in “Our forwards need to do a bit more work getting into positions where they can get the ball easier.”

While Werribee struggled in act, the side’s defence was again a highlight.

“Our team defence was really strong,” he said. “We have not conceded over 60 points which shows we’re doing a lot of things right.

“The pressure and the way our defenders have set up has been really good.. That has kept us in games.”

Hudson Garoni was the only multiple goal kicker for Werribee with two.

Nick Coughlan had plenty of the ball with 33 disposals, while Kye Declase had 30 and Jack Henderson had 27.

Allan said it was a couple of defenders who

were the standouts.

“Jalen Pavlidis was outstanding on the weekend,” he said. “He hasn’t played a lotin defence previously.

“With Louis Pinnuck out, Jesse Clark stepped up and played really well. Nick Coughlan, especially late in the game when Richmond were coming hard, was important for the team and he played well.

“Nathan Cooper didn’t have his best game and he’s probably been our best player all season, so it holds us in good stead.”

Allan said the likes of Pavlidis and Clark, who have come in this season and taken on rolls.

Pavlidis joined the club this season, while Clark missed a big chunk of last season injured.

“There’s opportunity for these guys with the turnover of the list,” he said. “Not just in bit part roles.

“They’ve stepped up and we’ll look for a few others to take hold of positions in the next few weeks.”

Werribee is one of four undefeated teams after three rounds and sits on top due to percentage.

Allan said after being on the road the first couple of weeks, it was nice to get out in front of their home crowd.

They will be back out this week against the GWS Giants on Saturday at 12.05pm.

“They had a good win against Sandringham,” Allan said. “They are a high quality side and we will have to be at our best defensively to stop them.

“It’ll be a challenge for our guys and we’re looking forward to playing them, they’re highly rated.”
