Get involved Sons of the West – Sign up now to ‘Get in the Game of Life’ Brimbank men, who want to live healthier, eat healthier and perhaps drop a shirt size, are being called to join the Western Bulldogs’ free men’s health initiative. This is a 12-week program called Sons of the West to encourage healthier lives for men living in Melbourne’s West. Council has joined the initiative and will officially launch the Brimbank Sons of the West program with a mini expo on Monday 26 May at Visy Cares Hub, 80b Harvester Road, Sunshine from 6.30-8pm. The event will include a cooking demonstration from Jamie’s Ministry of Food and much more. Weekly workshops will be run throughout the program. Community Governance Training Justice Connect will run a ‘Successfully Governing a Community Group’ session this month. Sunvale row escalates By Ben Cameron Open-space campaigners will take their objections about the tender process for the former Sunvale Primary School site to the state Ombudsman, following claims that the state government misled them over its future use. The government has denied the allegations. A 0.9-hectare parcel of land on the eastern side of the site has been for sale since April 30. Earlier this year, Brimbank council paid $3.02 million for the 1.1-hectare western section, which it intends to use for public space. The Save Sunvale group, which wants the entire site used for public parkland, has called on Premier Denis Napthine to intervene and terminate a “seriously flawed” tender process. Save Sunvale member Sean Spencer said he was told at a meeting on August 8 last year – attended by Education Minister Martin Dixon and other government officials – that no buildings would be permitted on the site. Tenders for the eastern parcel, which is zoned residential, close May 28. “When the issue of site testing was discussed, the fact that old underground [fuel] tanks had been removed and testing done was raised, the [government] official clearly stated that no structure could be built due to gases released on the site,” Mr Spencer said. “We were so surprised, we had a conversation afterwards with a number of people about what the source of contamination was likely to be.” Fellow campaigner John Hedditch said the government’s environmental testing of the eastern half “defies common sense’’ and was ‘‘grossly inadequate”. The Star Weekly was denied a copy of the environmental report on the grounds it was “commercial in confidence”.
Briefs New sites for ‘walkies’
Off-leash areas for dogs in Brimbank have been tweaked following community consultation. The changes include adding new locations and removing some locations where dogs were previously allowed on leash. New off-leash changes include Killeen Street Reserve, Sunshine West, replacing Buckingham Reserve in Sunshine West; Albion’s Kororoit Creek area behind Selwyn Park has been replaced by a park in the same area but further upstream beside the creek; the Taylors Lakes power easement, from Sunshine Avenue to Rutherglen Way, is replacing Taylors Creek Linear Path/ Along Chichester Drive; and Opies Road Reserve was removed due to development of Flagship Park. Signs are being updated in line with the changes and residents are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the updated list. The changes came into effect this month.

An independent consultant who advised the Save Sunvale group on the report claimed two groundwater test bores should have been conducted at each end of the eastern section, and there should have been similar tests for asbestos and other soil contamination before release of the tender. “Neither has happened or is planned to happen,” Mr Hedditch said.
“Only one groundwater test was undertaken, on the western [side of the] site. Mr Dixon’s spokesman said the department had expert reports completed whenever it sold school sites. “These reports are made available to prospective purchasers but are not released to the public,’’ he said. ‘‘There is no truth to the allegation that nothing can be built on this site.”

Burbs embrace high-rise living Inner-city lifestyles are popping up around Lake Caroline where three, four and five-storey apartment blocks, boasting “boutique” living, take advantage of lake views and a variety of shops and restaurants at their doorsteps. Among them are the Belise Apartments, offering 35 two and three-apartment blocks over five levels; Springwater Apartments, Lakeview Square and Aqua Lakeside Apartments, the last one being due for completion at the end of June. Apartment blocks have traditionally been an inner-city concept, with people flocking to the suburbs for their own homes, bigger blocks and more space. But a change is afoot. Paul Bird, of the Real Estate Institute of Victoria, said apartment living was expanding from its CBD roots and changing the traditional make-up of suburbs. “It’s certainly clear that the spread of apartments in Melbourne has grown in the past five years, with Melbourne’s middle and outer regions now seeing apartment construction,” Mr Bird said. “Part of the drawcard is the lower entry cost for a unit – with purchase prices normally lower than for houses – and the low-maintenance lifestyle.” REIV figures reveal that in the 12 months to the end of March, the median apartment price in Caroline Springs was $380,000. The median price for a house in Caroline Springs is currently $447,500.
Of course, it depends what kind of apartments buyers are seeking. Shae Joiner, from Caroline Springs Real Estate, said there were about 10 apartments still on the market at Aqua Lakeside, each commanding about $450,000. Ms Joiner said low-maintenance living was a big drawcard for buyers. “You get a lot of singles or professionals wanting apartments. You don’t get a lot of families, who are too busy working and are looking for a ‘turnkey’ out that way,” she said.

Highs and mows of travel More than 100 Melton residents showed their support for Rotary’s epic mower ride around Australia when Ride To the Other Side passed through Hannah Watts Park last Thursday. Rotarian Craig Alford manned the mower for this leg of the 15,000 kilometre fund-raising journey. Ride to the Other Side secretary, Kim Larsen, said the journey had so far raised $180,000 for the EJ Whitten foundation and Australian Rotary Health. The Bacchus Marsh and Melton branches of the Rotary Club pledged their support and gave two cheques to the cause. Cairnlea land sells for $6.4m
Some people are born leaders, others grow into the role. For Czarina Estores, 16, it’s been a bit of both. The year 10 St Albans Secondary College student is in Canberra this week after winning an Outward Bound scholarship. Czarina will spend eight days taking part in a national “aspiring leaders’ summit”, which will include a series of challenges, workshops and community projects designed to build leadership qualities. Just 30 students from around Australia were invited to take part. “It was actually pretty rushed – we had one week to do the application and then it was school holidays and I was waiting anxiously [to hear back],” Czarina said. “Then I received the excellent news. I was really surprised.” Czarina is no stranger to taking on new challenges. She’s a member of her school’s student representative council, is a Beacon leadership program ambassador and raises money for the Soriano-Orodio Foundation, which helps children in the Philippines with their educational and financial needs. Last year, the Derrimut resident completed a Duke of Edinburgh award program. “I’ve always liked to take up opportunities, because that will help me,” she said. “I’m a shy person naturally and leadership programs help build my confidence.” Czarina cites French, English and sport as her favourite subjects and says she would like to be a lawyer or teacher, or work in the business sector after she graduates.
A piece of council-owned land in Cairnlea sold for $6.41 million last week despite calls for it to remain in public hands. The 1.925-hectare site at 93 Furlong Road was bought by a “prominent” local developer. The Brimbank council said last year it would seek offers and ideas for future use of the land, including whether it could be used for residential, commercial or industrial purposes. It received five submissions from residents to keep it in council hands. The former explosives factory site was originally intended for the construction of a civic centre development, which is now to be built at the Sunshine library. Infrastructure and environment director Paul Younis said the council had received no offers for the land before the announcement last October it would be sold. Fitzroys real estate agent James Gregson said there was huge interest from local and interstate developers. “The interest and result highlighted the positive sentiment currently surrounding Melbourne’s west,” he said. Council Chairman John Watson said the land had been vacant for a long time. “The purchase and sale of appropriate properties is part of council ensuring it has the right facilities in the right places at the right time to meet the needs of residents,” he said. “Selling land which is surplus… is an important part of council’s long-term financial management of the city.”

Support service slams budget

Accolades for class acts Three students in the north west have been awarded for studies completed last year. Keilor Downs College’s Quynh Dang received a Premier’s VCE award for hospitality, while Braybrook College’s Keziah Greenhalgh was acknowledged for her work in community services. Caroline Chisholm College’s Adrian Seddon excelled in software development. More than 280 students were honoured at last month’s awards.
Women’s Health West says more funding is needed to help the 600 abused women who seek emergency assistance from its crisis response services every month. WHW chief executive Robyn Gregory last month called for extra funding to bolster case management and cut waiting lists for counselling for women and children. But she was “stunned” by the lack of money allocated in this month’s state budget, considering the “overwhelming demand” for family violence services in the west. “It seems our work, like women’s experience of family violence, is completely invisible to government,” Ms Gregory said. Incidents of family violence in the western metropolitan region increased 71 per cent over the past three years, from 5224 in 2009-10 to 8946 in 2012-13. WHW family violence services manager Jacky Tucker said the organisation was being forced to keep moving money from its case management services to support its crisis response services for women who had recently experienced family violence. “What this means is we have fewer resources to support women who have recently left an abusive relationship,” she said. Demand for WHW’s family violence services has increased 150 per cent since 2009-10, to 2990 police referrals in 2013-14. “The demand has been predominantly due to the increase in reported attendance of police at family violence incidents and
the subsequent increase in police referrals of women and their children to WHW and the flow-on effect to other programs,” Ms Tucker said. “We have also experienced an increase in the number of calls from women, especially over the past six months. We believe this increase is due to media attention on family violence and recent deaths of women and children.”

Community Services Minister Mary Wooldridge said the government was investing more than $95 million a year to change community attitudes and expand prevention initiatives to support women and children and to hold offenders to account. “The state budget included $22.7 million over four years to respond to violence against women and children,’’ she said. ‘‘The process for allocation of additional funding will be advised in due course and will help deal with the issues Women’s Health West has raised.”

Lightning in late charge By Liam Twomey VU Western Lightning is making a last-gasp sprint to the finals in the Victorian Netball League. After being decimated by injuries during the season’s first half, VU has hit back hard in the past three rounds. Under the guidance of caretaker coaches Robyne Dawson and Pam Strong, the Lightning drew with DC North Blaze before beating Geelong Cougars and Fed Uni Ballarat Pride. Dawson said it had been a frantic start to her new role. “When we took over, we met the girls on Monday at training and then 48 hours later we coached them in the first game,” she said. “They came from behind to draw that one, which was a fantastic effort.” After losing several key players to injury, including club captain Brooke Thompson, VU also had to replace two of its members who are representing their home countries. Fiona Themann will be competing for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games, while Sanonu Robertson is trying to help Samoa qualify for the world championships. The Lightning isn’t expecting any injured members of its squad to return before the end of the season. “Brooke [Thompson] is such a warrior, she wants to get back. But she has a serious finger fracture so we aren’t too hopeful with her,” Dawson said. “We have a few young ones in the division 1 team who are going to be given the opportunity to play.” Despite being second-last on the ladder a few weeks ago, VU is now one of the competition’s form teams. And the Lightning is just two points outside the top four. With four weeks until finals, the Lightning has the bonus of not having to play the undefeated City West Falcons again in the home and away season. Impressed by what she has seen so far, Dawson hopes the winning form continues. “I want to make finals,” she said. “We [Dawson and Strong] have both said that. We’re both super-competitive and like to win. “You coach to win games and I want to make finals with them. “Even with the injuries, we’ve still got enough quality players to do that. ‘‘We have some very impressive talent at this club.” Kate Thompson was a stand-out for VU Western Lightning against Ballarat Pride. Keilor picks up road wins It was a brilliant weekend for Keilor Thunder in Big V basketball, with the men’s and women’s teams combining for three wins between them. The men’s side got things off to an ideal start with a six-point road win against the ladder-leading Shepparton Gators on Saturday night. Nothing could separate the two sides early in the contest, with scores level 20-20 at quarter-time. The Thunder emerged from the break in better shape and started to control the play. Keilor dominated the next two quarters offensively and defensively, restricting the Gators to just 18 points while scoring 38 at the other end. The match looked over, with Keilor enjoying a 20-point lead going into the final term, but the Gators weren’t about to go away quietly. Shepparton launched a late fightback, restricting Keilor to just 13 final-quarter points while adding 27 of its own. But the margin was always going to be tough to reel in, and the Thunder was able to hold on for a 71-65 win. Sam Loccisano was Keilor’s leading scorer for the night, putting up 18 points. He was well supported by Mitchell Lukey and Brooklyn Carey, who both finished in double figures. The defeat was the first home loss for Shepparton this division 2 season. The Thunder men’s good run continued on Sunday, with Keilor making it two wins in two days with a win against the North East Bushrangers. Keilor recovered from a one-point half-time deficit to fight its way to the top in the second half at the Wodonga Leisure Centre. The Thunder won the half by seven points to secure an 80-74 win. Also on Sunday, Keilor’s division 1 women’s team beat Hawthorn by three points, 71-68.
