National Tree Day- help clean your air Take part in the grand 3,000 tree plant this month!

In an ambitious National Tree Day challenge, Council is urging as many as possible to take part in a massive tree planting event at Sydenham Park on Sunday 27 July, from 10am-3pm. The aim of the event is to plant a total of 3,000 trees in an area which was severely impacted on by early settlers back in the late 1800s.

Maribyrnong River at Sydenham Park were stripped by early settlers, leaving a river valley largely bereft of native trees and animals.

A barbecue lunch will be provided at no charge by Brimbank City Council, cooked by the Rotary Club of Brimbank Central.

To help with the re-vegetating of the area, come along on Sunday 27 July as many hands make light work. Meet next to the Keilor Golf Course end of Kings Road, Keilor (Melway ref:3J9).

Children under 16 years of age must be supervised by a responsible adult.

Please remember to bring along your own gardening gloves, water bottle and wear a pair of sturdy shoes, long trousers and long sleeve top.

Word Cup final to be screened at Village Cinemas Sunshine

Following from the success of the inaugural screening of Australia’s first match at the 2014 FIFA World Cup against Chile at Village Cinemas Sunshine, all sponsors have decided to come together to screen the World Cup final at no charge. Tougher laws to protect police Offenders who attack police or other emergency service workers can expect to be put behind bars under tough new laws introduced to State Parliament last week. The Napthine government has introduced increased sentences for offenders who attack police, ambulance officers, SES volunteers, firefighters, protective services officers or lifesavers, as well as nurses, doctors or other staff in hospitals who provide or support emergency treatment. Offenders who intentionally inflict serious injury on emergency service workers can expect to spend at least three years behind bars, while those who recklessly inflict serious injury can look to spend at least two years in jail. If gross violence is involved, attackers will face a minimum of five years’ jail. A 30-year jail term awaits anyone who murders an emergency worker. Attorney-General Robert Clark said the minimum penalties would form part of the offender’s minimum non-parole period. “When police and emergency workers put themselves on the line to help others, they deserve the community’s protection and support,” Mr Clark said. “Penalties for those who engage in these attacks need to reflect the seriousness of the crime. “Everyone deserves the right to be as safe as possible when they go to work, especially those who willingly face very dangerous

situations such as those involving drug and alcohol-fuelled violence.” The new laws come five months after 43-year-old neurosurgeon Michael Wong was stabbed in the foyer of Footscray’s Western Hospital. Sunshine North man Kareem Al-Salami was charged with attempted murder over the attack and will go before court later this year.

Brimbank police’s Inspector Chris Gilbert said attacks against police were uncommon across Brimbank, but he welcomed the tougher laws nonetheless. “Essentially, each of the services named are working for the people out on the street, not against them. ‘‘Whether it’s the MFB, the ambos or ourselves, we’re out there working for the people,” he said. “There just can’t be any tolerance for people who assault emergency workers when they’re just trying to help. “The vast majority of people are actually quite respectful of police and their role, and the other part of that is that our members think about safety first all the time.” Western Health declined to comment on the changes last week.

Bad times made better The life of a paramedic is challenging, varied and amazing – just ask Louise Allford. The 27-year-old Altona paramedic has been with Ambulance Victoria for four and a half years, mostly at the Brimbank station in Delahey. “Being a paramedic is the crux of health care,” she said. “You see a range of cases and it’s a great opportunity to get out and about and meet different people in a job that changes and is challenging every day.” Brimbank paramedics work four days on, four days off, with two 10-hour day shifts and two 14-hour night shifts consecutively. Ms Allford says her unit answers many cardiac and drug and alcohol-related call-outs. “We do a lot of the sporting injury-type

trauma, but the stereotypical major car accidents and such we don’t see so much of, which is a good thing,” she said. “In a typical day we’d probably do around six cases. Most of them are around the Brimbank area and western suburbs, but we never know where we’ll end up. “I like meeting older people. They have such amazing stories … sometimes they need a hand with only the simplest of things. “When someone calls an ambulance, it’s not a good time for them . . . so when you feel you’ve made some sort of difference, that’s one of the best feelings you can have.” Charlene Macaulay

Windswept city stretches SES

By Ben Cameron It was predicted to be an “interesting week” by Brimbank SES and it certainly was with the local service receiving more than 100 calls for help in just over 24 hours as wild weather lashed the region. Between midnight on Tuesday and 2pm Thursday the Brimbank unit received 135 calls for assistance from householders. Fifty calls related to building damage and 77 were requests to remove fallen trees. The Bureau of Meteorology recorded wind gusts of up to 102km/h between midday and just after 1pm on Tuesday at Essendon Airport. Melbourne Airport recorded gusts of 104 km/h at 1pm. “Three response vehicles with support of a four-person incident management team have been working tirelessly around the clock since 9am yesterday [Tuesday],” SES spokesman Brad Dalgleish said.

“We’ve had three or four houses which have sustained significant damage from fallen trees. And several cars have been damaged, too. “We also had to attend a fatal incident on the Calder Freeway.”

A pedestrian was killed on the Calder after being struck by a truck in Keilor North about 5am on Thursday morning. Investigators have been told the man was walking on the outbound lanes of the Calder Freeway when he was hit by the truck.

Paramedics tried to revive the man, but he died at the scene. It was the third pedestrian death in Brimbank in just over two months; two men in their 50s died on May 21 and 22 after being struck by vehicles on Ballarat Road.

Luis’ mission of hope

Helping hands reach out

He’s come a long way from teaching Brimbank kids how to swim, but former Taylors Lakes resident Luis Darcy is still helping the next generation. The Australian army sapper and member of 21 construction squadron is part of a contingent deployed to Timor-Leste that is building a kitchen and dining area for school children at Dili’s Comoro Intermediate School. It’s part of Exercise Pacific Partnership 14, a US-sponsored humanitarian exercise aimed at strengthening international relationships in the Asia-Pacific. Darcy, who was born in Uruguay and came to Australia aged 15, was well prepared for overcoming language barriers, working alongside the Timor-Leste defence force engineers. “We’ve all become really good mates,’’ Darcy says. ‘‘Even if we don’t understand everything that we say to each other, we all really appreciate having them around and they put in just as hard as we do.” A former Copperfield College student who joined the army as an electrical engineer after graduating in 2004, Darcy says it’s his first time working alongside the US navy. “It’s been great working with other defence forces. “Everyone has been working so hard and we’ve managed to have everyone focus on achieving a good result on our building project. “I always wanted to be an electrician and it was great doing my training with the army and getting paid well, too. In my opinion, there’s no better way to do an apprenticeship.”

A lack of choice for people with disabilities in Brimbank has led to an important support agency with nearly 70 years’ experience opening its doors in Sunshine. Inclusion Melbourne, founded in 1948, officially opened a new Sunshine office last week at the Visy Cares Hub. The centre will employ up to four office-based staff, with 15 more expected to be working out in the community by the end of the year. Inclusion Melbourne chief executive officer Daniel Leighton said he was attracted to the “diversity and vibrancy” of the area and hoped to make Sunshine, and Brimbank, an even more inclusive community. His said his organisation gave people the chance to make new friends based on shared enjoyment of the activities they chose to take on, whether art, craft, exercise, being part of a sports team or volunteering at the local op shop. “We want to provide more opportunity for people with disability to get involved in their community, and we were keen to come to Sunshine because of the area’s diversity and vibrancy.” The Sunshine office already has a number of dedicated volunteers signed up and ready to go. Mud, sweat and cheers Writer Loz Blain has good, clean, dirty fun on a quad bike “What’s the chance of a quad bike review?â€? our esteemed editor asked. Fairly slim, as it turns out. Quad bikes exist in a strange legal black hole in Victoria – you can buy them, but you can’t register them for recreational purposes. You can get a limited kind of road registration for them as a “special work vehicleâ€?, but to do so you need to basically prove you’re a farmer with your own land. There are a few “quad bike experienceâ€? tours out there that allow you to have a crack at these strange vehicles, so I sign myself up for a two-and-a-half-hour session at Adrenalin Quad Bike Hire in Sale, Gippsland. For company, I recruit Cheffie, a two-wheeled tarmac terrorist, and my stoutly conservative father, John, who makes it clear in advance that he thinks “quad bikes are for environmental thugs who just want to tear up the soilâ€?. We are greeted by Gary, who talks us through how to ride our hulking steeds in a manner that makes it clear he’s dealt with some resoundingly stupid individuals in his time. “Throttle’s over here at your right thumb. This is your front brake. Don’t use it, you’ll probably crash. This is your back brake, it’s been disconnected. This is your park brake, we cut that off as well; people were riding around with the brakes on all day and complaining that the bikes were too slow.â€? Cheffie is assigned a stocky Kawasaki 370, Dad takes the beefy Honda King Quad 500 and I’m given a Honda 400 festooned with so many cable ties that they almost look decorative. After a couple of laps around a test loop to make sure we’re not going to kill ourselves immediately, we set off. Our first few tracks are quite varied, from open smooth paddock tracks

to deeply rutted backroads where, frankly, it’s amazing the quads don’t get bogged. In open corners, the best approach seems to be diving in way too fast, throwing your body into the turn, then wrenching the handlebars around and mashing the thumb throttle to spin the back out. After a brief slide, the chunky back tyres will grip and fire you out in roughly the right direction. This is most excellent fun. In the ruts, the best approach is more or less to let the bars move freely as they will, and mash the thumb throttle so the bike can just

slide and steer itself. This is also excellent fun. Next we’re diving into the bush, dodging tea trees and ducking under branches on tight, technical trails that require a lot of attention. And then, suddenly, the track opens up and we see the main event – a giant, moist, virgin mud flat that spans several hectares. We stop to admire it under the Gippsland sky. We gas it out onto the mud, and as soon as each bike crosses the line onto the soggy stuff, traction becomes a distant memory. The quad bikes just sail gracefully across the surface,

sending up giant rooster tails of chunky mud. Cheffie sails past at full lock sideways, engine bellowing and laughing like a madman despite travelling at a fairly sedate 20km/h or so. Dad floats past backwards in a gentle loop, looking slightly dazed. Gary cracks a rare grin. You certainly want to have your wheels pointed in the right direction when you hit the dry stuff again because, when the wheels grip, it’s a lot more abrupt than when sliding. I hit the dry at an angle moving at about 40km/h and immediately regret it, nearly pitching myself off the side. But I follow the golden rule – when in doubt, gas it out – and the bike sorts itself out quick smart. I enjoyed these odd machines far more than I expected. They’re enormously grunty, quite physical to ride, but lots of fun to stuff into tight corners or wrestle around a longer arc. www.adrenalinquadbikes.com
