Local artist Nancy Lang celebrates the McCormack Park birds’ nest installation, an artistic metaphor for the local community, funded through last year’s community grants program. Submissions for this year’s program are opening on 2nd June.

COMMUNITY GRANTS

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE LIBRARIES?

Do you need funds to run a community social group, or a community health and wellbeing project? Are you already a community group and you need funding for equipment or resources, or for a community focused environmental project? The Council’s Community Grant Program funds many different projects that support the health and wellbeing of local communities. This year, for instance, the environmental group Transition Hobsons Bay was funded to create an artistic birds’ nest in McCormack Park, Laverton. Two local artists Gyorgi Marek and Nancy Lang embarked on an educational discovery with members of the local community to capture images, soundscapes, thoughts, drawings and poetry as part of an exhibition in the Council’s Art in Public Places. Part of the exhibition was the birds’ nest (photo above), a metaphor for community drawing on local Aboriginal stories about the local area, waterways and birdlife. Here’s another example. The Altona Country Women’s Association (CWA) needed some support for their Night Branch event at the Australia Day 2014 festival in Logan Reserve, Altona. The group applied for a grant to purchase equipment, hire a marquee and buy ingredients to make those iconic CWA scones at the festival. If a local group has a project idea that needs some financial assistance, then the Council’s 2015 Community Grants Program can assist with funding. Groups can submit an application from 2nd June 2014 to 31st July 2014. WITNESS KING TIDES Why not join us with your camera at the Altona Beach Pavilion at 2.30pm on Sunday, 15th June? Since 2012, over 5000 photos have been uploaded across Australia as part of the Witness King Tides program. This is a chance for us to create a photographic record of our coastline for future generations. Back at the Beach Pavilion, we’ll upload our photos and enjoy traditional Pacific Island refreshments, a presentation from a Tuvalu elder about the devastating effects of climate change on Tuvalu, and performances by Tuvalu Youth Group and ANIVA. Newport Library at The Substation story times Join us on Friday mornings at 9.30am for story time in Newport Library at The Substation. The library on the second floor is open for business every day except Sunday and the little people of Hobsons Bay are invited to gather at story time for an engaging session of stories, music, craft and other early literacy activities. AUSLAN Storytime Bring your children along to experience a visual language in this fun and interactive story time session. Stories, songs and rhymes will be presented in English and AUSLAN on Wednesday, 11th June between 10:30 am and 11.15am at Altona Meadows Library and Learning Centre.

MOBILE FLOWER, FRUIT & VEG STALLS Proposals are invited for Contract No. 2015.28, from interested persons to sell flowers, fruit and vegetables from the following locations: 1. WILLY LIT FEST ECOLOGICAL CONTROLLED BURN An ecological controlled burn is scheduled to take place between 29th May and 30th June at Horsburgh Drive Grassland, Altona North. Part of the management of native grasslands to help control the spread of weeds, the controlled burn also encourages plant re-generation and aims to improve local populations of the Golden Sun Moth. Nearby industry will be notified prior to the burn in the form of a letter and adjacent landholders will be door knocked on the morning of the burn.

Razer scornful of ‘Saint Julia’ Williamstown Literary Festival panellist Helen Razer “really couldn’t give a toss” about Tony Abbott’s infamous wink. The acerbic-tongued author says her interest is in policy, not people. Similarly, the subject of “Saint Julia” Gillard as a “martyr for all women” will probably be dispensed with in five minutes, Razer says of her coming role on the panel. Razer will discuss the book Bewitched and Bedevilled: Women Write the Gillard Years” with fellow contributors Eva Cox and Shakira Hussein and editor Samantha Trenoweth. Razer argues Ms Gillard’s downfall was not due to sexism and says the former PM overplayed the gender card. “Her stupid ‘blue ties’ and ‘feisty woman’ comments brought a broad public attention to her gender,” Razer says. “Honestly, I think the electorate might have ignored the fact of her gender if it hadn’t been so tediously brought to our attention.” Razer says the objectification of Ms Gillard, including reference to her “huge thighs” on a Liberal National Party fund-raising dinner menu, is an example of idiocy rather than sexism. “You know, it wasn’t a public article. It was something devised by supporters of the then-opposition. Some people are just idiots.” Personally, Razer thinks Ms Gillard was a “decent” prime minister. “But between Anne Summers’ irrational

Festival-goers can vote for their favourite aspiring writer or poet in the people’s choice awards, while winners of the annual Ada Cambridge Award for Poetry and Prose will be announced on opening night. Hospital lauds caring passion

Painting healthier picture By Benjamin Millar High school students are being taught to embrace a healthy lifestyle by a new program rolling out across the west. The CHASE (Community Health Advancement and Student Engagement) organisation recently marked the program’s launch at Essendon Keilor College with hip-hop performances, live street art, sporting activities and healthy cooking demonstrations.

CHASE spokeswoman Teagan Fink said the idea was to prevent poor health, rather than try to tackle it once it had become a problem. “CHASE is a community health initiative trying to improve health through education,’’ she said. “We have got Copperfield College in Delahey and Essendon Keilor College involved and we are looking at expanding to other schools.’’ A pilot nutrition program has involved year 8 students workshopping and performing

a song written with mentor and hip-hop artist Mantra. “Our mentors go into these classrooms, we have a number of university students from a wide variety of backgrounds and study areas and they are all positive role models for the students,” Ms Fink said. Drew Moir, a third-year medical student at Western Health’s clinical school, said it was crucial to address rising rates of chronic diseases. “This program is breaking down the social barriers to good health.”

Hospitals value healing and serenity, so staff at Western Private Hospital celebrated the just-gone Private Hospitals Week in the most appropriate way: sharing a chat over cups of tea. Chief executive Vicki Canning said the Footscray hospital was proud of the care it provided the western suburbs community. “The health of our local community is our No.1 priority,” she said. “Our staff are the backbone of our hospital and demonstrate every day their commitment and passion in caring for patients. Private Hospitals Week is a chance to show our appreciation of our staff and the work they do.” Cancer patient Sean Creagh has been attending the hospital for fortnightly chemotherapy sessions for three years. “The care is excellent. It’s more of a social thing, I’ve seen other rooms hospitals do chemo in and it’s not very personal, it’s more clinical.” Benjamin Millar
