There’s good news for Altona City Soccer Club with new turf laid at Kim Reserve in time, coincidentally enough, for the World Cup. A great deal has been happening over the last few weeks with our local SES unit celebrating a name change, and the Global Homework program being officially launched at Altona North library. The first, with SES Altona becoming SES Hobsons Bay, it will better recognise the efforts of our volunteers and the area they cover. The second is a great initiative for students who want to enhance their learning potential. World Environment Day took place on 5 June and to recognise this, children from Altona North Child Care did a great job picking up litter at Irwin Reserve. Well done to everyone involved.

ALGA Conference In June, Mayor Cr Sandra Wilson and Crs Carl Marsich and Paul Morgan attended the annual National General Assembly for local government, one of the key sector gatherings of the year. Measures were discussed on how to assist our community and local workers in adjusting to the changes in the manufacturing sector. The Mayor Cr Wilson asked the Federal Minister for Environment Greg Hunt MP how the National Clean Air Agreement, (scheduled to take place on 1 July 2016), might bring tangible improvements to air quality for the people of Brooklyn. Having access to Ministers, Shadow Ministers and Ministerial Staff is important in getting our issues on the Federal agenda.
Two Hobsons Bay residents, Geoff Mitchelmore and Bert Boere, have campaigned for improving odour and dust issues around Brooklyn and they were recently made EPA environmental citizens for their efforts.
Altona Coastal Park National Tree Planting day will soon be here. Last year we had about 110 people turn up to Newport Lakes including students form Mt St Joseph’s College in Altona. This year at Altona Coastal Park we will be planting gahnia filum (chaffy saw sedge) to provide habitat for the Altona Skipper butterfly. It’s good entertainment for the whole family with former tram conductors the ‘Connies troupe’ providing entertainment.

Take a drive past the Botanic Gardens and you will see the footpath and drainage works at Giffard and Osborne Streets have now been completed. If you head down that way, pop into the gardens. Our staff have done a great job clearing up after the recent storm event and it’s worth catching the clivia nobilis as it starts to flower. You may also want to take a wander down Shelley Beach. With the help of the Friends of Point Gellibrand, we have re-landscaped, planted native grasses, and added bench seats and bike racks for people’s convenience. The new footpath at J T Gray reserve is almost finished, following Maddox Road as it heads north up to Kororoit Creek Road. The footpath is now

operational with the only task remaining being the installation of bollards. This follows the completion of the Rifle Range footpath in May and provides a range of walking opportunities for visitors to the area. The Rodger Lane roadworks in Williamstown should be completed by the second half of July, weather permitting.
Loft Reserve Pavilion Following a fire in 2013 the Council has been working closely with the insurers and builders to rebuild the pavilion at Loft Reserve. The users of the facility, Altona Roosters Rugby League Club and West Newport Cricket Club, are currently being accommodated in portable buildings located on the site.
The rebuild works are due to commence shortly with an expected completion date of December 2014, all things going to plan.
Newport Althletic Track The design of the extension to the Graeme Morrish Pavilion has now been completed and we are seeking tenders for its construction. The extension of the pavilion involves the provision of a new 190m2 room with an additional 70m2 of storage. Once completed, we’ll have a flexible community space that can be used for a range of purposes including meetings, presentations, seminars, training sessions and social events. Tenders close on 7 July.

You may have seen the new interpretive signage at Laverton Stormwater Harvesting. If not, take a trip down there. The project has successfully transformed vacant grassland into something that is both attractive and a valuable community asset. The treated stormwater will be used to irrigate the reserve in Altona Meadows and recent water quality testing has found the water quality to be good with low salinity levels. Also you may have received a newsletter recently in your postbox about the New Residential Zones. The Council is currently preparing background work to apply the new zones across the municipality and there will be extensive community consultation during this time. Seabrook community centre May and June saw Seabrook community centre increase its range of programs including a new Monday evening session of pilates and a Chinese speaking mum’s group for parents of young children. Events coming up include a balloon art workshop and a mini-Picasso creative art program for primary school aged children. There is also a paediatric first aid course on Saturday 19 July for parents and carers of babies and young children. Details can be found at www.seabrookcc.com.au. Seabrook is one of nine community centres in Hobsons Bay which offer a range of programs and activities including art,

Lohse Street reserve We are currently finalising construction plans for the redevelopment of the Lohse Street Reserve. The final plans include a picnic shelter, a new pathway, landscaping works, a sensory garden and public lighting. Once the plans have been finalised, we expect construction to begin in the coming months. Works on the Stage Two upgrade of McCormack Park meanwhile have begun and the playground renovations should be d by September.

Senator rides into Canberra By Benjamin Millar
Hot lunch more than just food A hot lunch is something most people take for granted, but for Tommy Moyal it’s a blessing. The 51-year-old, who lives in a campervan in Hobsons Bay, attended last Wednesday’s three-course lunch served by volunteers at Laverton Community Centre and Neighbourhood House. He said the lunch, for which concession cardholders are asked to give a $5 donation, provided a break from his lonely life. “Some days are like hell on wheels for loneliness.” Mr Moyal said he travelled to Laverton for company as much as food. “I get a bag of food now and then from the good people like the Church of Christ in Williamstown, from Minister Megan Jung at Helping Hand – I have lunch there as well. “Without these places, I have no friends. I’m on my own, basically, so I live like a hermit. “Usually, I eat dried food in the van: canned food and a sandwich or whatever. “[Wednesday’s lunch] was like a blessing to sit down and have a 20-minute yak with two people sitting beside me. “Unfortunately, I didn’t have the $5 donation; I had a free lunch with the help of the Williamstown people.”

Footscray’s Greens senator-elect Janet Rice has vowed to be a voice for Melbourne’s west in the nation’s capital. Ms Rice arrived in Canberra on Tuesday on a bicycle, having ridden through regional Victoria on a two-week ‘listening tour’. The former Maribyrnong mayor told Star Weekly her time on council would stand her in good stead in a Senate where neither major party holds the balance of power. She and other new senators will be sworn in later this month. Ms Rice says her focus will be on bringing attention back to environmental issues and highlighting the need for greater investment in public transport. “At the moment, about 80 per cent of motorised trips are by private cars,’’ Ms Rice said. ‘‘That needs to come down significantly, and to do that we need a lot more efficient and convenient public transport. We also need to make it safer and easier for people to hop on a bike for local trips, with more dedicated bike and walking paths.” Ms Rice will be the Greens’ spokeswoman for transport, infrastructure, forests and tourism. She said a recurring theme raised during her ride through Victoria was refugees and the need to celebrate Australia’s multicultural society. “I loved meeting a Burmese couple growing vegetables in a community garden on the Werribee River flats, and flying coloured balloons with the Bendigo community, proclaiming their support for a proposed mosque.” The Greens have 10 senators and one lower house MP, Melbourne’s Adam Bandt.

A Seabrook woman whose daughter died in utero last July is helping other “mums of angels” by raising money for a charity close to her heart. Katherine Currie and her husband Steve will take part in next month’s Run Melbourne event in honour of their girl, Melinda. In 2011, they lost their son, Jonathon Fulton, at 18 weeks gestation. Ms Currie said it took courage to fall pregnant again, which she did in October, 2012. “It was a stressful pregnancy – constant nausea and fear – but Melinda grew perfectly and we were very excited for her arrival, with induction booked for July 26, 2013,” Ms Currie said. However, on July 17 she woke and didn’t feel any movement in her womb. “We rushed to Werribee Mercy Hospital, where it was confirmed she had died. I couldn’t believe it had happened again. I was induced that day and Melinda Grace Currie arrived silently at 8.45 that night. “I may be biased, but she was the most beautiful baby I had ever laid eyes on – on par with our first-born daughter, Elianna.” Melinda’s death was caused by the umbilical cord being wrapped tightly around her neck and body. The following weekend, Run Melbourne was on. Ms Currie watched the runners and decided to join them the following year in honour of Melinda. Three weeks later she started training. “Running became a release for me, an opportunity to rebuild my body and my strength. In a way it helped me battle the feelings of failure and betrayal I felt about my body where my baby had died on my watch. “I was determined that Melinda would
leave a legacy of strength and inspiration, not breakdown.” Part of Melinda’s legacy is a program at Werribee Mercy Hospital where brothers and sister of babies who have died receive a soft toy to cuddle and love. To continue Melinda’s positive impact in the world, Ms Currie and her husband will support the charity River’s Gift, which raises money for SIDS research and awareness, was established in 2011 by a couple who lost their four-month-old son, River Jak Adam. “After meeting River’s mum, Alexandra, in my online support group for mums of angels, I was so inspired by her and her husband Karl’s determination to build an amazing
