Childcare cut hits mums By Goya Dmytryshchak Women could be forced out of work by the rising cost of childcare in order to care for their own children, according to Laverton Community Children’s Centre manager Kate Kirner. Ms Kirner said childcare workers supported improvements to regulations and national quality standards, but the federal government had failed to look at ways and means to support the rising costs. She said changes to professional qualifications in 2014 meant higher remuneration, and child-staff ratios had increased so more workers had to be employed. “All I keep hearing is the cost of childcare, families can’t afford it, or the cost of childcare has become so expensive,” Ms Kirner said. “In the last eight years, our fees have gone from $65 to $92.” Council budget papers reveal funding for the universal access program that provides an additional five hours of four-year-old preschool education is only guaranteed up to December. More than 50 family day carers in Hobsons Bay, who provide an in-home alternative to centres, are concerned about how they will make up $230,000 in lost federal funding from next July. Hobsons Bay council this month resolved to write to assistant Education Minister Sussan Ley expressing concerns about the funding withdrawal to family day care, and a review of the new eligibility criteria which deemed a suburb like Laverton was not disadvantaged enough to receive funding. An officer’s report states the changes may leave carers, mainly women, out of work. Ms Kirner supported the council’s call for a review of eligibility criteria, saying a suburb like Laverton was most vulnerable.

“We actively support families who have the postcode of 3028 because those families, in my professional opinion, require additional support and measures that they may or may not get somewhere else.” She said women, primarily, may consider leaving work to look after their children. “What I worry about is if you remove funding for family day care and a percentage of kindergarten funding and then you don’t

re-look at the model of childcare benefit which is Commmonwealth-specific, we run the risk of creating this tier-based system where people who can afford things like nannies, for example, receive benefits for that. “Families, women in particular, are forced to make those decisions [about whether they can afford to work] because it becomes a cost and access issue. “We should be better at that by now.”

Operation nabs four for sport venue break-ins Four men have been charged over robberies at 20 sporting venues across Melbourne’s inner west. Clubs broken into include Altona Sports Club, Westgate Golf Club in Spotswood, Kooringal Golf Club in Altona, Werribee Golf Club, and Altona North, Yarraville and Werribee bowls clubs. A full inventory of the amount stolen is still being undertaken, but the total is believed to be about $38,000. Detective Sergeant Brad Lawrence of the Hobsons Bay crime investigation unit said mainly coins were stolen. “In some instances, poker machines were broken into,” he said. He said three men were arrested last Thursday after a burglary at Westgate Golf Club. A fourth man was subsequently arrested at Kerang in northern Victoria. The arrests were a culmination of Operation Bare Foot, investigating burglaries at 20 venues between May 29 and July 17. A 23-year-old Tarneit man and 19year-old Wyndham Vale man have been remanded to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on July 31 and August 15, respectively. A 19-year-old Werribee man and 22-year-old Kerang man were bailed until November 11 and October 16, respectively. Goya Dmytryshchak

Still awaiting answers By Xavier Smerdon A Werribee woman is hoping two unknown drivers could hold the key to explaining her husband’s death. For Lynette Flowers, the date November 10, 2011, is forever burned into her memory. Her husband, David Flowers, was sitting in his car at a roundabout in Laverton North when another driver slammed into him. A police brief on the incident shows that the other driver claimed he felt dizzy at the time and his vision became blurred. He claims to have lost control of his car while driving along the Princes Freeway before taking the Laverton North exit where he became airborne when he drove straight over a roundabout and into Mr Flowers’ car. According to the police brief, the driver had a stroke the next day while he was in hospital. For more than a year, Ms Flowers has been calling for a coronial inquest so that questions about her husband’s death can finally be answered. Issues such as the other driver’s medical records going missing from the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine and a delay in police interviewing him have left her reeling. A letter sent from the Coroners Court of Victoria to Ms Flowers’ lawyers earlier this month states that further investigations have been made, but there were still grey areas. It confirms that two other cars were hit by the driver before he crashed into David’s car. “Investigators appealed for witnesses to the initial collision through all media outlets and on Crime Stoppers,” the letter states. “The drivers of those vehicles never made themselves available to investigators.” The coroners court is expected to announce by the end of August if it will grant an inquest.

Have a say on truck survey Maribyrnong residents are being urged to provide feedback on a draft truck report before submissions close next week. The report analyses the origin and destination of trucks moving across Maribyrnong. Findings were presented to a community forum on June 25 hosted by the council, VicRoads, Environment Protection Authority and Health Department as part of a series of events aimed at addressing issues of trucks, noise and air quality in the inner west. Maribyrnong Truck Action Group president Samantha McArthur said the report revealed the final destination of 60 per cent of truck traffic in the area was not within the inner west. “We live with the effect of trucks travelling through our community every day, but it’s heartening that some short and medium-term solutions are being put in place,” she said. “However, these surveys and reports will come to nothing unless real action is taken, and we’re not talking about major infrastructure or dollars. It’s some of the suggestions by residents which can be done quickly, such as school crossing curfews on Somerville Road..” Maribyrnong mayor Grant Miles said truck traffic was one of the most pressing issues facing residents. “We encourage residents to have their say on the draft truck movement survey and the community forums run so far.” To make a submission, visit bit.ly/Ul7KOa. A fanciful idea pops up Some of Maribyrnong’s leading artists, designers and craftmakers have joined forces. Stocking only locally crafted products from a pop-up shop in Yarraville Village, Far Fetched Designs is providing local makers with a retail outlet that’s open until the end of August. The brainchild of Kingsville’s Belinda Miller and Maribyrnong’s Rachael DiMauro, who make children’s clothing for their Mr Moo and Orcwood ranges, the outlet runs as a collective, with each maker paying a portion of the short-term lease. “We’ve each been selling our children’s range through craft markets for a few years now and are continuously impressed by the amazing talent out there,” Ms DiMauro said. “We really wanted to bring together a selected range of beautiful things to people who don’t visit craft markets on the weekends.”

The shop, on Anderson Street, is brimming with giftware, jewellery, home furnishings, artwork, children’s clothing and furniture. Ms Miller has been overwhelmed by the response since the shop opened earlier this month. “All of the makers are small businesses trying to get their products out there,” she said. “We have products ranging in price from $2 right through to $800 and a diverse array of items with one-off pieces you won’t find anywhere else.” Far Fetched Designs at 85 Anderson Street, Yarraville, is open Wednesdays to Sundays until August 31. Clothed in history By Goya Dmytryshchak An exhibition showcasing fashions worn to four of Australia’s most important events will be on display at Williamstown library from August 1. Curated by the National Capital Authority (NCA), the exhibition shows actual and replica costumes worn to the laying of the foundation stones and naming of Canberra in 1913, to the opening of Parliament House in 1927, to the filling of Lake Burley Griffin in 1964, and the opening of the Parliament House in 1988. Garments include 1920s fashions on loan from Fabrile in Melbourne, the Benalla Costume and Pioneer Museum, and private Canberra collections. NCA chairwoman and Hobsons Bay resident Shelley Penn said developing the exhibition had been a labour of love. “The dress worn by the governor-general’s wife, Lady Denman, was recreated by volunteers who worked from original photographs and a Raymond Longford film of the event,” she said. Tours with the NCA’s Roslyn Hull will take place for secondary schools on August 1 and the wider community on August 2. Milliner Christine Waring will host two hat-making workshops based on a 1920s ‘cloche’ on August 7 from 5-9.30pm and August 8 from 10am-2.30pm. Tickets for the hat-making workshops can be bought at www.hobsonsbaytickets.com.au. Their price is $110. The exhibition launch will be from 6pm on Friday, August 1. The Hobsons Bay Libraries Heritage Group will host a tour and afternoon tea on August 28 from 2-3.30pm. For bookings to the launch or heritage tour, visit: libraries.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au.

Sewing for the African sisters A farewell afternoon tea will be held in Altona next month for four women travelling to Uganda to continue developing a women’s refuge and sewing microbusiness that are changing hundreds of lives. Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre staff and volunteers Jill Bilston, Tricia Salau, and Kim and Georgina Reilly depart Australia on August 4 to continue work on the Bwindi Sewing Project. Ms Salau said the ‘Farewell to the Travellers’ afternoon tea was a way to thank residents for supporting the project over the past three years. In 2012, the Altona women established the project with members of the Ugandan Ride 4 a Woman (R4W) co-operative, visiting the HIV-ravaged nation to donate sewing machines and train 20 women to sew tourist items. R4W works to empower women in communities surrounding the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. Last year, the Altona women set about raising $10,000 to build a women’s refuge on ancestral land owned by the head of R4W. The Louis Joel centre is seeking the donation of a data projector to show the African women YouTube videos in craft, English, basic math and sewing techniques. The afternoon tea is on August 3 at 2pm at 5 Sargood Street, Altona. A $5 donation is welcomed. To RSVP, contact Kim Reilly on 9398 2511 or admin@louisjlcc.com.au. Goya Dmytryshchak

Pier project bid goes to VCAT By Goya Dmytryshchak A developer has appealed to the state’s tribunal to let it build a seven-storey apartment block in Pier Street after Hobsons Bay council said the project would ruin Altona’s village feel. Footscray-based Fremont Homes has lodged an appeal at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal to build what would be Pier Street’s tallest building, on the old two-storey Boccelli restaurant site at 118 Pier Street. The highest building in Pier Street is a five-storey residential complex across from the proposed apartments. Fremont Homes plans to build a 28-dwelling apartment block with about 35 parking spaces and 90 square metres of ground-floor retail space. As reported by Star Weekly in May, Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson advised the developer the proposal was “simply not appropriate” for the cafe and beach precinct. Developer Fred Verduci said he was meeting the council tomorrow and would consider removing one level from the building’s plans. “I think unit development like this has potential,” he said. “That area there … the council has designated for apartments, and you’ve got to try to optimise the site. “What we’re building now, we’re building for the future.

‘‘

The only reason we’re going seven storeys is to facilitate car parking

’’ Clifton dons a jazz hat

“We’ve tried to make sure that there’s adequate car parking so that it doesn’t put additional load on what limited load there is in the area.” Mr Verduci said he was seeking a reduction in car parking requirements for the project and a waiver of the loading-bay requirements. The council this month refused an application by Planning & Property Partners (PPP), acting for Omni Property Group, for an eight-storey, 56-dwelling development proposed for 637 Melbourne Road, Spotswood. Another application, for a six-storey, 33-dwelling development to be built in Aitken Street, Williamstown, is currently before the council.

Maribyrnong’s Jane Clifton is a woman of many talents. An acclaimed writer and actor, she’s also a marriage celebrant – but its music and singing that remain her great love. Next week, Clifton will hit the stage for a one-night-only celebration of jazz at the Footscray Community Arts Centre. She will perform alongside renowned tenor saxophonist Julien Wilson, a star of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. With Jex Saareladt on piano, Phillip Rex on bass, Sam Lemann on guitar and Michael Jordan on drums, all recognised as leading instrumentalists in their field, it promises to be one of the best jazz outfits Footscray has heard.

“Of all the things I do, singing is still the thing I love most,” Clifton said. The program will also include a special premiere of Cracked, a new electro-acoustic/ visual work by Duncan Foster, using manipulated sounds and images captured throughout a three-month renovation/ construction of his street in Maidstone and featuring saxophonist Wilson. The concert will be held on Saturday, August 2, from 7.30pm at Footscray Community Arts Centre, 45 Moreland Street, Footscray. Tickets cost $15 or $10 for concession. High school to high fashion

(Supplied)

Western suburbs students can stitch and sew their way to glory this September when they take part in the annual Fashion Awards Australia. The event will have hundreds of budding fashion designers from high schools throughout the west presenting their best pieces before an adoring audience. Awards for best outfits in a range of categories will help their designers become recognised as someone to watch in the fashion industry. Awards organiser Heather Marcus said Fashion Awards Australia had grown from a Wyndham-only event to become a western suburbs institution. “It’s important because there is nothing like it anywhere else in Australia,” Ms Marcus said. “The people of the west have embraced this event so strongly because they know that we have so many talented young students in the area.” As well as high school students, TAFE students will also be taking part. Ms Marcus said a win for TAFE students at Fashion Awards Australia would help create career pathways. “One of the reasons we do this is that we want to ensure that once students finish their TAFE studies they are able to find employment,” she said. While the event has become synonymous with the west, Ms Marcus said that next year it would expand to include Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. “The east and west will both have their own events and then we’ll have another event that combines the two sides of Melbourne.” The Fashion Awards are at Lakeside Banquet and Convention Centre, Taylors Lakes, on Friday, September 12. Dentistry gap’s filling in 2015 Construction on a new 12-chair dental clinic in Footscray is expected to begin early next year. Funded with $9.7 million in May’s state budget, the Cohealth (formerly Western Region Health Centre) facility will be built on the site of its existing adult clinic in Paisley Street. Cohealth operates two dental clinics in Footscray – Paisley Street and a children’s clinic in Geelong Road – which provide emergency and general dental care to more than 10,000 patients each year, including some of the community’s most vulnerable. In April, Dental Health Services Victoria dubbed the Paisley Street clinic “the worst public dental clinic in the state” for the age and condition of the buildings and equipment. The service has faced the threat of closure due to a raft of troubles, including vermin, termites, electrical hazards, rusty chairs and narrow passageways. Cohealth chief executive Lyn Morgain said it was working closely with Maribyrnong council and Department of Health to deliver the long-awaited redevelopment. “The new health centre will enable cohealth to provide more services across several disciplines in the one location and improve access to them,” she said. “It sits comfortably with council’s vision for a health precinct in this section of Paisley Street and is an exciting development that will improve health outcomes.” Cameron Tait

Price: $595,000 – $625,000

If ever a property (or, indeed, a street) were tailor-made for retirees, this is it. There’s nothing fancy-schmancy about the two-bedroom house but what it lacks in bells and whistles is compensated with a lovely homey feel and pristine presentation. So why the appeal for retirees, small family or downsizers? Let’s start with location: literally a chip shot from the 18th hole of Kooringal Golf Club and a five-minute saunter to the foreshore and the walking tracks (taking in wetlands) all the way to Williamstown. Treated as a neighbourhood ‘local’, the golf club has a restaurant and other facilities so becomes the perfect 19th hole – or you could invite friends back to share a glass or two on your enormous covered deck jutting

out into the pretty back garden. Next, the house and surrounds. Varieties of dense succulents, manicured lawn and a silver birch put out a garden welcome mat before entering from a side verandah into a foyer. Tassie oak floorboards start here and flow into the lounge-dining room which also opens through etched-glass sliders to the kitchen-diner. White-painted timber cupboards, a pantry, wine rack, dishwasher, wall oven and gas cooktop equip the kitchen. The main bedroom, to the right of entry, has triple, mirror-fronted fitted wardrobes, ceiling fan and floorboards. The second bedroom (with mirrored robes) is down another boarded hallway, as are a separate toilet and a bathroom with floral border

tiles and a curtained, walk-in shower with hand-held rose. This second bedroom links to the deck, so unless grandkids or guests are on the agenda, it could be part of the entertainment setup. Behind the carport, there’s a garage, most of which has been cleverly converted to a bedroom (or office) with floating floorboards and split-system. The other bit, behind a panel-lift door, is now a storage room/bike shed with shelves. The neat-as-can-be property has ducted heating, evaporative cooling, electric window shutters all around, garden shed and water tank feeding an irrigation system. fter 87 years of commitment to the community, including ex-service people, currently serving personnel, schools, sport and charity organisations, Altona RSL is looking forward to continuing to support those in need, general manager David Hanson says. “The Altona RSL was established in 1927 and has been an integral part of the community since,” Hanson says. “Welfare is our main focus and we have contributed $1,159,374 towards the local community during the past five years alone.” Hanson says the RSL consists of a small team of locals willing to assist visitors and provide great service, and volunteers who help look after the community. “We’re a community-minded business willing to help as many locals in need as possible.” The RSL has donated to nine local schools, six sporting clubs, veterans associations, hospitals and cancer councils, and Hanson is directly involved in this community aid. “We run a welfare bus that takes members of Altona RSL to doctors’ appointments. We also take out elderly people from their nursing homes on day trips and assist with sport events at Altona P-9 College.” The RSL has donated furniture to local seniors in need and Christmas presents to charities for children within the community. “Every Wednesday we have a pension officer attend the RSL to assist members with their pensions; a justice of the peace with a kit for powers of attorney and to provide general financial and medical advice at no cost; and a full-time volunteer

ith 24 years’ experience in the jewellery industry, it’s fair to say David Szigeti, owner of Uccello Jewellery and Watches in Altona, knows a thing or two about precious jewels and watches. “I am a watch lover and enjoy designing jewellery,” Szigeti says. “We sell new and pre-owned jewellery and watches, including vintage pieces. ‘‘We specialise in engagement rings, Swiss-made boutique-brand watches and unique and individual jewellery.” Uccello stocks a range of gold and silver jewellery, including designs with diamonds and other gem stones. It also designs jewellery and makes it to order. Uccello services and repairs watches, sells watch batteries and bands, buys pre-owned silver and gold jewellery and watches, and performs jewellery cleaning. The business also provides valuations. “We design and make engagement rings to order, so the bride-to-be and fiancé are part of the creation of a unique ring just for her,” Szigeti says. Uccello has many happy customers, including Kerran, of Altona, and Joan, of Avondale Heights. “The service David provided was beyond my expectations,’’ Kerran says. ‘‘His experience and knowledge in sourcing the perfect stone, through to the quality of the design and craftsmanship of my ring, was exceptional. ‘‘I would highly recommend David and he will continue to be my first choice when it comes to jewellers.” Joan values Szigeti’s opinion and expertise. “I have been a customer of Uccello for many years, having purchased jewellery from there and had family heirlooms repaired. ‘‘David has also designed and made individual pieces for me.”

rian Wilson and Margaret McPherson had no idea they’d become great friends when they signed up to move into Amarco Apartments, the modern retirement village in Kingsville. “I’m one of the originals; I’ve been here since it opened in 2012,” Mr Wilson says. “I sold my house and came here because it was low maintenance. I’ve got a lovely lifestyle and feel very safe.” Mrs McPherson agrees. “I’ve been here about 18 months and it’s terrific,” she says. “I had a big house and garden and got to the stage where I couldn’t manage it after having a stroke. Now I have a ground-floor apartment with a garden and artificial lawn. Everything is new and the people are friendly and active.” Amarco Apartments, run by aged-care service provider Uniting AgeWell, is a retirement village in the inner west only five kilometres from Melbourne. There are new one- and two-bedroom apartments. Ground-floor residents have access to a courtyard or there are balconies on the first and second floor. Each new apartment comes with $5000 worth of inclusions, such as a washing machine, dryer, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave and window furnishings. “We have a friendly group of residents who are very welcoming to newcomers,” sales consultant Bernadette Walsh says. “They can join in fish and chip nights, pizza nights, afternoon tea and dinners out, happy hour, movie nights, bingo, tai chi classes and mystery bus trips.” Amarco Apartments also has extensive community spaces, including lounge and dining rooms, a billiards area, library and exercise and outdoor recreation areas. Residents have a 24-hour emergency call system in their apartments and there are aged care facilities on the same site.

Ascot solicitors work for you

(Kristian Scott)

E

veryone needs someone on their side in challenging situations and there’s now more help out there for residents in the west. Ascot Solicitors is a general law practice operating in Melbourne’s western suburbs. The practice was recently extended to service a broader client base and operates out of two locations, the original Deer Park office and a brand new Caroline Springs office. As a general practice the firm covers all facets of law from wills and estates, estates disputes, conveyancing, building, construction and commercial litigation and dispute resolution, and all family/de facto law matters. Principal solicitor Senad Dizdarevic has a special interest in property law, building and construction and estate disputes. According to Dizdarevic it’s all about commitment and results that makes this firm stand out from the rest. “We are dedicated to your cause, committed to the end goal and are honest every step of the way. We work with you and move you forward with greater certainty and confidence,” he says. “We have a diverse team of lawyers across the two offices with a broad set of skills and different interests. We know there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach so we work out who is the best individual in our team to work with our clients. “Well established in their own right, together our solicitors share more than 50 years of experience practicing in all areas of law and are well positioned to manage all legal matters.” If one of the solicitors at Ascot cannot help you, they will happily refer you to

someone that can. Staff at Ascot Solicitors value a strong, lasting client relationship and good outcomes, just as much as the clients who employ their services. “A win for our client is a win for us and

we work with that in mind every day,” Dizdarevic says. There is also a free 20 minute consultation to all new clients and pensioner or health care card discount for any will or power of attorney.

t’s always hard to know what to do with the Gordon Legal sponsorship of the club. I’m not really looking for new work and I get to go to the president’s lunch most weeks anyway, sponsorship or not … except for weeks where we start favourite. Vice-president Sue Alberti likes to host those and has an unbeaten record so far. If we happen to make the finals this year and get to the GF, she’ll be president that day! Such thoughts weren’t on my mind when I set out for Simon Garlick’s office during the week and saw a couple of hundred young kids in Bulldog jumpers having an Auskick clinic with some of our players. The kids were really cute and I loved the way our players paid them time and attention and complimented what were, frankly, some pretty indifferent foot skills. These kids are our future members and fan base. That’s when it struck me, I could do a lot worse than use the sponsorship to introduce a few kids to what I hope will become life-long membership of our club. So with membership manager Tom Lister, we cooked up the idea of using the Gordon Legal sponsorship to underwrite membership for all the Auskick kids in the west who nominate the Bulldogs as “their team”. We’re going to give them the gift of membership, invite them to a night to meet our young players and explain to them that the club belongs to the west, just as they do. That sense of belonging to a community, pride in your community’s team, is a gift. Just ask the people of Liverpool. And maybe that’s just the sort of initiative that will make them want to come back year after year. If it works, we’ll get another 1200 members this year and create a whole new base for the future. If you live in the west and barrack for another team, it’s time to ask yourself: “Which community do I really belong to … the one where I live, or somewhere over the other side of town?” And if you’re already a Doggies fan, have a think about who you can conscript. As the great philosopher Doug Hawkins once said: “Better to sign up a single new member than to curse the comparative AFL membership table.”

s a footballer, there will always be moments when your footy career will flash before you. And even though I’m still forging my career, my most recent injury had the sort of pain that made me think I was in trouble. It was my knee, again. How you feel immediately you are injured is often an over-reaction and club medicos and staff soon put your mind at ease. Then follows a series of scans, doctors’ appointments and an anxious wait to confirm the extent of what has happened – and the journey of rehabilitation begins. When you receive the news that you’ll miss some football, it’s a shock at the start. But as you go through the weeks, you come to the realisation that the people you’re working with – physios, fitness staff, gym coaches and others – are all working together to help you recover and offer support to get over the next hurdle. It’s not as dark a place as it may seem. You feel supported, and your extended Bulldogs family is with you every step of the way. There’s always light at the end of the tunnel. All the 7am swimming sessions, boxing and grinder circuits pass. Then the focus returns to the goal of playing the game we all love. You actually find another layer of gratitude that you are playing this great game. It reminds you not take the job for granted. We all love this game and we play it knowing that some form of injury is an inevitable part of the job description.
